Well, not my favorite series of hers. But still a fun and light read!

3.5 stars for Doctor in Petticoats.
Vivid characters and a fun update on Sophie and Clay from their children's eyes

3 stars for Wrangler in Petticoats
Just a light read, fluffy and not entirely believable, but relaxing.

2 stars for Sharpshooter in Petticoats
Saved from 1 star by appearances from the family and the Montana Rose series folks. Otherwise, surprisingly dark and the kidnapping-a-wife-a-wanting-to-spank-her was really disturbing. First real miss for me from Connealy.

This is an omnibus 3-in-1 edition of a GREAT trilogy!

Doctor in Petticoats

Every time I finish reading a new book from Mary Connealy I am astonished at how well I have been entertained. I giggled, I cried and I had a desire to throw the book across the room in response to the “bad guys”. Doctor in Petticoats is no different on that line of thinking. I was not disappointed and nor will any reader of Mary Connealy be unhappy with this novel.

This is the first book in the Sophie’s Daughter series, it comes after Lassoed in Texas series and the Montana Marriages Trilogy. While I was reading I knew that it was to be a continuation of the Lassoed in Texas series as the first book there, Petticoat Ranch is Sophie’s story. I was not prepared to find an interwoven continuation of the Montana Marriages Trilogy, I literally cried with happiness. :) In part this was a story about the oldest daughter Beth, but it was also about the next daughter Mandy. So many personalities on the page and full on entertainment.

Beth McCellen finds a groom and way to be a real Doctor in Alex Buchanan. Mandy follows her heart into a marriage that might be the biggest mistake she ever made. I love this book and start of a new series, I cannot wait for the second book in Wrangler in Petticoats and then especially the third in the series Sharpshooter in Petticoats to continue Mandy and her sisters’ stories.

Wrangler in Petticoats

Read from November 06 to 22, 2010 — I own a copy

I am not sure why I seem surprised. Reading a story from romantic comedian Christian Historical Fiction author Mary Connealy always sends me through a whirl of emotions. Wrangler in Petticoats is another one in a long line of entertaining reads with big messages. Through the pages a reader will be taken into a romance that is full of blushes and shy grins, but also giggles and plain out chuckles. Yet you also get deep conversations on topics of discussion like marriage, family, and true love. That’s what this book is about.

Marriage, good ones and bad ones. Marriage for love and marriage for convenience. Family that means nothing and family that means life as well as family that just happens to exist. Then love. Love on the offsets of a lie, love that thrives in truth and love that is hidden because of propriety or situation. It is always a journey with Mary and of course I look forward to more.

Sharpshooter in Petticoats

Sharpshooter in Petticoats is the third novel in Sophie’s Daughters Series, or rather the ninth novel if you include Lassoed in Texas and Montana Marriages in that series as well. The best part is that the fun keeps coming on characters that I love with the writing of one of my absolute favorite authors Mary Connealy. The best part, even though it is a continuation of great characters, as a reader you really could start anywhere and enjoy any and all of the books as a stand alone.

Every time I read Mary Connealy I want to go grab my husband, forcefully kiss him and walk away with a self satisfied grin.

4 1/2 stars!! Classic Mary Connealy...great characters, super fun writing style, imaginative (if sometimes ridiculous) plots!

To note...this series contains many characters from Mary's other books in side roles (ex. Mark Reeves, Sophie McClellan, Beth Harden) so some of her other books might be best to read first.

Suspense Filled Silliness

Five stars for suspense. Five for humor. Five for Western flavor. Five for historical accuracy. Five for grabbing the reader's attention. Five for holding it. Five for three really good stories. Five for truly stupid, evil villains. Five for fallible, loveable heroes and heroines. But each story could be improved with more thorough proofreading, a weakness in all the Kindle editions I've read, not just these books.

I like all the women in these books. They are strong and capable, sometimes more than the male leads, and they follow what is practical instead of the social norm. That is until these chauvinistic men enter their life, telling them they have to wear dresses. It's really so unfair, even if it is practical some of the time. Mostly impractical though. To be fair, the men could go back to wearing gowns like they did in biblical times, instead of oppressing women. I really liked Sophie's last husband and those two as a couple, in their later years. I wanted to read the story of him raising the girls and this couple's life in their old age, also. The bits and pieces that the writer shared about them, piqued my interest and I liked their relationship. But what I find about this author is that she starts out well with satisfying and likable female characters and entertaining men who become the husband, but she changes what is charming about the females and the men and turns them into someone I don't like. If she'd stop including this oppressive, carbon copy, female dress code garbage, which takes away all of my satisfaction in the story, her books would be much better. I've read about eight of her books and she ruins each one with this traditional b.s. Even if women followed a dress code, you don't have to include it as an oppressive thing where women have to bend their will to the men or women. Next point is, I didn't like the sharp shooter's wimpy husband. There was nothing appealing about him at all. There was a young rough Indian woman who threw knives well. I liked the way the author built her character. I wanted to read her story, too, but started feeling like the author would turn her into a limp noodle as well, so I stopped looking.

Absolutely loved this book! I normally do not read trilogies, however after having looked at each book individually and each of the books in the trilogy I realized nothing had been eliminated so I checked it out. From beginning to end I was lost completely in these magnificent pages, the story of these women who were brave but also women whose hearts were open, sensitive and loving. They were brave and hardened due to rough life in Texas and raised by their incredibly brave Mom, Sophie. These books intertwine so I do believe they need to be read in order. I found out midway through the book that I should have read Petticoat Ranch, which is the story of Sophie and when the girls were younger. Just be sure to read that series first, it gives you an idea of what their upbringing was and why they are the women they are in this book. I hated getting to the end.

Also this is my first, I believe, book that I have read of Mary Connealy, and she is now at the top of my favorite authors!! She brings humor into the book that had me laughing at the start. But more than that, I felt as if I someway knew these characters personally in someway. I was captivated from beginning to end and its difficult for me to find a book that makes me feel that way! Read it, you will be glad you picked it up and won’t want to put it down!!!

I enjoyed this trilogy of books. There is one story that weaves throughout all three, so I don’t think any of the three would stand alone, but they fit well together. I liked the stories, growth, and action. There was a lot of clear communication through eye contact, which kind of made me roll my eyes. Who know, maybe some people do speak conversations through just a gaze? I sure don’t.

Tiny spoiler: I was not ok with one aspect of the trilogy. Even though one husband is a clear weasel from the get-go, it doesn’t make it ok to justify an affair. No affairs happened—but two characters made it clear (later) that they had been in love for a long time. Even if it works out in the end... that’s a hard pass from me. I liked the books, but because of this issue, I would have a hard time recommending the trilogy to anyone.

The first book was ok but the writing got progressively worse throughout the book. I could overlook this if it wasn't for the fact that the author chose to portray true love as basically rape.

The first two books hinted at this but the third book in the trilogy had the female character repeatedly saying "No!" only for the supposed "hero" to just decide to kiss through her objections and this is portrayed as romantic. This is not what any girl should think is romantic and that is exactly how this book says to any impressionable girl. When anyone in the relationship says "No" (for ANY reason) that should be the end of it.

TL;DR If you think rape is romantic this is the book for you.

Mary always delivers heartwarming stories of love and family. These three stories are of three free thinking independent woman. Who meet men that are the very opposite of them. Picture them in the old west with stagecoaches, and women stayed at home. Readers will cherish and laugh at these three stories

The stories of three tough pioneer women, the scrapes they get into and the men whom they marry--for better or worse. Make three good movies as most of her books would. We're transported back in time with memorable characters and stories that keep us turning pages. Nice to have all three stories in one volume.

Sophie's Daughters

If you've read Petticoat Ranch you will remember these girls. Now they are all grown up. In fact throughout this book you catch up on the characters from Lassoed in Texas trilogy and Montana Marriages Trilogy. Mary Connealy writes about strong women and adds struggles and laughter into their lives. Good clean romance.

Cute with women who are not scared of kicking butt. three stories in one book.
Doctor in Petticoats: Starts with Beth, who has been back East to go to nursing school and has plans to come back home to be a doctor. Beth is on her way home specifically to make it to her sister, Mandy's, wedding. The only other person on the stagecoach is a drunk who smells like it has been weeks since his last bath and does nothing but sleep. On a steep and dangerous mountain pass, they come up on a wreck. Low and behold, the drunk is actually a doctor. Things don't go as Beth had planned of course, but with a little help and a lot of patience, she makes her dreams come true. Tells a lot of Mandy's story in this
Wrangler in Petticoats: Tells Mandy still, but this is actually Sally's story. On her way to help Mandy with the third in three years, her party is set upon by dry-gulchers. She is wounded and ends up falling off a cliff. Certain is going to die, she sees the last thing she expects. She sees a man at the bottom. When the dry-gulchers go to strip the dead, they can't find the cowpokes body. This sets them on a long and dangerous mission to silence all witnesses.
Sharpshooter in Petticoats: This is now officially Mandy's story. She is a recent widow, but is hold up in that dang castle her idiot husband built for her and her children's on safety. Until a man from the past comes back into her life to complicate things. Those dry-gulchers and some old bodyguards of Sidney's are actually family and believe there is a score to settle.

I had read these books previously and in recent reading of Mary's novella's I like connecting with the families in Texas n Montana. Some words Mary uses seem to come up in her books especially in regards to partner/ spouses that get chosen. eg no-account person or idiot. Also kissing that stops conversation to change someone's mind seems to come across with hero rescuer. (I don't mind as I believe the women have strong characters and a man may need to get the point across that he wants the girl to know he values n respects her plus wants to show his love n care) I just really like the strong bond of the McCellan, Harden, Reeves families especially around children. The matter about crying buckets of tears I'm ok with that but my ex was not. I guess its something that has to be worked out in relationships. Beth, Sally n Mandy's stories are a good read n they don't end in this book you can glimpses of them in other stories. One character I liked through the series was Luther who was an older man (adopted grandpa role)who valued girls n shared time with them over many years n looked out for them in their choices. I liked getting myself involved in this story and there is a hunger there that I have missed something in life. I certainly see the thread of the "Cooter's" family motto with attitude in my relatives not to the extend to kill but secrets, avoidance, vile words. I look forward to Fire n Ice coming.

Mary Connealy loves to write about strong women. Women who can out-hunt, out-shoot, and out-rope any man alive. Her heroines are vibrant, beautiful women who are not afraid to use the talents that God gave them even if the men in their lives do not understand them. This is what makes her books so riveting. Her humorous writing style along with her vivid descriptions that would leave Festus Hagan (of Gunsmoke fame) speechless are simply priceless. I have read the Lassoed in Texas series and the Montana Marriages series as well as Sophie’s Daughters. While all of these books are delightful, I must admit that I like Sophie’s Daughters best. Maybe it’s just because each book seems to get better than the last. I also think it has to do with the delightful way that the Sophie series neatly ties up all the loose ends and connects characters from all of the first books. If you love a good western, if you love a good love story, if you love humor and wit; you will love these books. Start at the beginning and read all nine books. By the time you are through you will be ready to rope a calf, shoot a grizzly, and read tracks like the written word—all while you build a house, plant a garden, raise six children and keep the gleam in your man’s eye.

Don't get me wrong, I did like these books, but I thought the main characters cried way too much, especially considering they were all considered tough women who didn't cry. Yet there they were, crying at everything. Still, I did enjoy reading their stories.
