It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger."Wild nights are my glory, " the unearthly stranger told them. "I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course. Let me sit down for a moment, and then I'll be on my way. Speaking of way, by the way, there is such a thing as a tesseract."
A tesseract (in case the reader doesn't know) is a wrinkle in time. To tell more would rob the reader of the enjoyment of Miss L'Engle's unusual book.
Madeleine L'Engle was an American writer of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and young adult fiction, including A Wrinkle in Time and its sequels: A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Many Waters, and An Acceptable Time. Her works reflect both her Christian faith and her strong interest in modern science.
I guess I missed the window when this imaginative book came out in 1962. I had always heard that « Wrinkle » was a great book for school age children. I saw her French name L’engle. And I thought how could Charles use « The Gettysburg Address » for proving his intelligence. Would the French version replace it with something from Honoré Balzac or Emile Zoila or Victor Hugo?
Sadly no country hopping or replacements were ever needed.
1.What did you think the book was about? I think thta the book was about the olders sister Meg and the younger brother Charlie wanting to see their father after his departure for a year. Meg and Charlie soon discoverhow to travel in time as mrs. Whatsit explains how. The book goes thought Meg and Charlie's experiences as they try to get by all the people and obstacles on the oher planets to get to their father. Their goal though out the book was to find their father and save him so they can all be reunited as a familly once again.
2.Did you feel that the book fulfilled your expectations? Were you disappointed? I enjoyed the book because it was very interesting to me and grabbed my attention. What I like about the book was how the story flowed and made sense, making it easier to understand. However I disliked the part where Mrs. Whatsit was explaining how traveling in her was works. I disliked this because it was complicated and was unclear to me what she was trying to say. Overall, the book was great and is did fulfill my espectation.
5.What about the plot? Did it pull you in; or did you feel you had to force yourself to read the book? The plot really pulled me into the book because they had to save their father from the evil earth like planet which when you read it, it was a mixture of fear, excitment and wonder, which just keeped me wanting to read more and more of the book.
6.Were the characters realistic? Would you want to meet any of the characters? Did you like them? Hate them? The charatters where really realistic, for example Mrs. Whatsit was a centaur which does not exist however meg and Charlies familly where realistic. I would like to meet Mrs. Whatsit so she can bring me o visite other planets.
9.How would the book have been different if it had taken place in a different time or place? The book took place in our modern day which made the book exciting because they travelled to an other planet and discovered that is was alot like earth besides the people acting very weird. However if this book took place in the past I wonder if the other planets would of been more advance then us or maybe we would of been.
13.Would you recommend this book to other readers? To your close friend? I would recommend this book to others readers because I think that it is a book that most readers enjoy. This is a book that should be read because it has a lot of details and it is very adventurus; with something interesting that continuously happens at every chapter.
15.What was your favourite part/scene of the book? My favorite part of the book , A wrinkle in time what when Meg and Charlie find Mrs. Whatsit deep in the forest where she showed Mer and Charlie how to travel thought time very fast so they could find the Father.
16.What was your least favourite part/scene of the book? My least favorite part of the story is the begging bacause I find all books don't really have anything interesting at the start. It always takes a few chapters before the book starts being interesting.
18.Everyone- On a scale from 1-10 what would give this book- what would have made this book better? On a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate this book as an 8. I would give this book this rating because it was definetely interesting, however it is more of a kids book, I thnk for the ages of 12 to 14. Even though it is still quite interesting for readers of all ages. If I could change somethng in this book, I would change the age of Charlie. I would do this because travels to an other planet at a young age to another planet that is filled with stange people and high technology would be quite dangerous. You could get caught and be trapped there forever. This is just not what an 8 old would do.
AWSOME BOOK!! Full of fantasy and magic. The movie they made SO did not do it justice!! You cannot get the full effect from the movie. Read the book! It's about a girl, who's little brother is super smart. Ever since their father disapeared though, he never talks to anyone but his family. They have to go on a journey to find their father that tests their minds. Like I said......AWSOME BOOK!!
Lots of great quotes weaved throughout, somewhat spiritual and cause for inner-reflection. Many quotes from some of the superior beings in the story quote several world-wide known quotes to explain ideas in familiar and wise verbiage us wee humans can understand. Good read. Unique story.
One of my very favorite books that was read to our class by my sixth grade teacher, who would take the first half hour after lunchtime to read us good books. It will hold the interest of children AND adults. Mrs. L'Engle was given the Newberry Award for writing this book.
