While reading through this I could see so many applications outside of simply being an upwardly mobile cog in the wheel of big business. All of us have any number of big ideas we never flesh out. Using his suggestions to put them into presentation form and then boil them down to 8 second sound bites we could all be more prepared for that time when opportunity may knock. In fact, prior preparation would INVITE that serendipitous knock.

He shares tips for preparing, speaking, powerpoints, dress, protocol, Q&A sessions, and even television appearances and much more. These can be used in the classroom, at interviews, informal gatherings, pageants, and almost any public gathering where you may find yourself in the spotlight.

So glad this somehow came across my radar. So surprised my library elected to borrow it through another library rather than purchase a copy to circulate here. But hey, that forced it to the top of my reading list with a "must read by this due date" push.

Had to read this book for one of my MBA Classes - better than I thought, but still a self help book (which I don't tend to enjoy). One section in particular was very applicable to my life and gave me some introspection so for that bit, I'm thankful I read it.

Otherwise, this book has a lot of practical guidelines to help you speak in a work setting. We had to a 10 minute speech using the format provided and it was helpful.

This is a collection of practical advices to improve communication skills, spoken to serve leaders/executives but in fact applicable to everyone at work.

Examples are
8 second drill
18-minutes max for a presentation or lecture
Start with your points, then explain them. Not the other way around.
Give a thin presentation, handout thick documentation for readout.

I found this book incredibly useful. I get pretty nervous when giving speeches in front of crowds. I particularly liked Toogood's advice to keep one's tone conversational. When I think of a presentation as a conversation, I do get a little less nervous about the idea. He had some good ideas about Powerpoints, though he prefers simple slides, while my MBA professors have in the past expressly said they want more than just a photo on a slide. At any rate, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is trying to improve his or her speaking and presentation skills.

This book is almost completely geared toward giving presentations. Still, it is a book that you can read again and again to pick up the numerous tips within. Loved the eight-seconds drill, loved it!
