Two years have passed since the dramatic destruction of Count Dracula. And Jonathan Harker has settled down to a quiet life as a junior partner in a law firm. But his reputation is about to catch up with him. As word of his abilities spreads, clients are turning to him for help with problems which appear to have an involvement in the supernatural. His first case takes him to Cornwall, where the Haywood family are worried about the imminent marriage of their daughter Flora to the elusive Sir Owen Velland. Flora had been engaged for two years to the amiable Doctor Goodwin, before suddenly breaking off the relationship in favour of Sir Owen. Yet Sir Owen had been recently widowed under very suspicious circumstances and rumours are circulating in the small Cornish town that his unnatural powers and abilities may have some involvement with devil worship. Are these rumours just idle gossip? Or is there a dark truth behind what people are saying? Can Harker use his knowledge of unusual and the occult to befriend Sir Owen and discover his secrets? Or has he come up against an opponent even deadlier than Dracula himself? ‘Devil May Care’ sees the return of Jonathan Harker, the hero of Bram Stoker's classic 'Dracula', in a chilling new historical mystery series. Devil May Care By: Tony Evans Narrated by: Peter Noble Used my Kindle Unlimited to get this book and it was a great use of it. I really enjoyed the book, I felt like I was back in time. This was a good supernatural mystery and the narrator was perfect for the feel of the book- for the time, the people, the experiences... Great job!
This book didn't work for me. I listened to it on audio and it was almost as if the narrator thought that using theatrical and 'spooky' tones would disguise the tropes and subsequent boredom...er sadly no. It was very unconvincing and extremely predictable. I did complete it but only because it was so short and I don't believe in giving bad reviews if you haven't read the book. Not for me - sorry.
I can say with all honesty I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was impressed that such a story could be told in so few pages, it was an easy, relaxing read, the story itself came together nicely, the characters were likeable (mostly) and the ending summed up perfectly. I look forward to reading more from the same Author.
It’s predictable but also entertaining. I love the idea that Jonathan Harker developed a reputation for solving supernatural or strange problems after the story of his encounter with Dracula gets out. I also love that Mina has become a popular mystery writer and continues to help Jonathan with the unusual cases he is requested to investigate.
I’m a big fan of the original Dracula and found this a wonderful tribute to the characters and a fun way to think about what happened next for them. If you’re not a fan of the original Stoker story and characters, this one may be a pass.
There are two more books in the series and I will likely read both of them.
This was an excellent original story featuring Jonathan and Mina Harker from Dracula as they encounter more supernatural intrigue. Beautifully capturing the era and the characters, this was an entertaining adventure. Do Jonathan and Mina stop the nefarious Baron and his evil deeds? You will have to read and find out. I read this book using immersion reading while listening to the audiobook. Narrator Peter Noble was superb, his beautiful accent embellishing the narrative.
1895. Harker's reputation takes him and Mina to Cornwall. Where the Haywood family are concerned about their daughter's relationship with Sir Owen Velland of Carrick Manor. They want Harker to investigate his character and hopefully find against him. An entertaining historical mystery
I liked it. As much as I wasn't too kind on the book Dracula (Was a fan of the graphic novel variation as a kid, and much enjoyed a theatre production that I saw of the book.), I actually enjoyed listening to this short continuation of Jonathan Harker's adventures after Dracula. Though I understand this might be a series and am unsure if this will be a series I consider continuing.
Two years after the Dracula-trouble, Jonathan Harker and Mina set off on another trip because of Johnathans job. They soon get entangled with Sir Owen Bellend, sorry, Velland, and trouble ensues. Not bad in any way.
25 This may be one of the few books where the narrator has made the book worse than it should be. Perhaps. Needless to say, despite extreme efforts, I could not get into this one. Maybe one to try again later.
An historical mystery short featuring Jonathan Harker (the solicitor in Dracula) as the protagonist. This is to be an introduction to a planned series. In this one Jonathan is hired by parents of a girl who is planning to marry a suspicious, much older man named Owen Velland. The parents aren't happy with the match but can't dissuade their daughter from her plans, so they hire Jonathan Harker to handle the marriage agreement and also to secretly investigate ominous rumours about Mr. Velland. I like the idea of a historical detective investigating supernatural mysteries. Although it was fairly easy to see where the mystery was headed I enjoyed the story and the characters and will pick up the first book when it is released.
Not a bad start using a character from another author. Jonathan Harker, he of Dracula fame, along with his wife Mina and Professor Van Helsing are here to delve into the life of the future husband at the behest of the girl's parents. Rumours abound about Sir Owen Vellen, but what will Jonathan and Co find?
it was an OK read..slow..very slow with thick language...it seemed like a seinfeld episode until the final third of the book....tries to emulate Stoker and the way the victorians wrote....had to fight to stay focused until the last part of the book, but once I got there it was interesting.....
It's a nice continuation of Jonathan Harker after killing Dracula. Well written with familiar characters. However, if you're unfamiliar with Dracula, you may have some difficulty understanding the characters.
