Messenger of the Dark Prophet

Justan's dream of entering the Dremaldrian Battle Academy has been put on hold. His burgeoning magic powers have been deemed too dangerous to go untrained and he has been sentenced to two years at the Mage School. How is he supposed to fit in amongst the mages and wizards, a physically weak group of people he has never identified with? Can he learn how to control his new powers without losing his identity as a warrior? Can he stick to his plans while the mother of the moonrats tries to destroy the school from within?

Fist, the ogre who was estranged from his own people, has now found a home next to a friendly human settlement while Deathclaw, the raptoid who was changed into humanoid form, has left his homeland in search of his destiny. They escaped the wizard Ewzad Vriil's grasp before, but his secret army grows as does his influence in the kingdom. What will they do upon coming face-to-face with The Messenger of the Dark Prophet once again?

I was born in South Carolina and have lived all around the United states. Utah, New Mexico, Michigan and Tennessee.

I started reading novels in second grade and my love of Fantasy started with Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain series. I couldn't get enough, continued with David Eddings, Tolkein, Robert Jordan. All I wanted was to become a published writer.

The characters and concepts that eventually became the Bowl of Souls series started in my teens. I wrote short stories, kept notebooks full of ideas, and generally dreamed about my world constantly. There were several attempts at starting a novel over the years.

Not long after I was married, my wife told me to stop talking about the story and write it down. Here I am, many years and rewrites and submissions and rejection letters later taking the plunge into self publishing.

Messenger of the Dark Prophet
The Bowl of Souls, Book 2
By: Trevor H. Cooley
Narrated by: James Foster
Love where this is taking me...a thrilling ride so far! Magic, wizard, ogres, orcs, strange creatures, golems, and elves all presented as if I could see, hear, and smell them. Suspense abounds along with many surprises, friendships, and deceit. Lots of unpredictable situations, great characters and amazing world building brings this fantasy adventure to life! The narration is absolutely wonderful!

DNF @ 48%. The MC is an overpowered insufferable clueless self absorbed jackass, yet despite his, he is loved and praised by everyone (except bad people), always saves the day, and is always better at everything than everyone else. The dichotomy between who he (and the Author) thinks he is, a High Fantasy Superman, and who he really is, a spoiled whiny self absorbed child with superpowers, has made this book unreadable for me. In many ways, he is a Mary Sue, if Mary Sue was an arrogant callous teenage boy.

A pity, really, as the story and world building are otherwise quite good.

not a lot better than the first. a villain is introduced who is utterly one-dimensional and bad without a single redeeming feature. sorry, boring.
One redeeming quality of the book - the ogre. A character with glimpses of multi-dimensionality and depth struggling in a culture that does not fit him. I liked that. Sadly gets reduced to a comic relief character in the next books.

Notes:

Overall, better progression & smoother POV changes than last time. Motive behind certain actions/events are getting a bit questionable but I'm hoping that the answers/results will make them less questionable. I still like the characters a lot and enjoyed a couple of the fun perspectives the author has woven into the story.

Messenger of the Dark Prophet is over all a great addition to the story. The writing is improving and the story flows mostly better then the first book. It felt more adult oriented in this book and the characters continue to grow.

The characters are still a strong point for me in this series thankfully. I enjoyed reading about them. There were some places that seemed like they were trying to hard to fit into the story without fitting quite right. There were a few times the POV switched that it just didn't fit. I kept expecting these to benefit the overall story, but in the end they just kind of stuck out there. Much like the Fist POV in the first book, I expect it will come into play in the third book of the series. Which leads me to another part.

While I enjoyed reading this book, again it didn't seem to end at a spot that would have allowed this book to stand on it's own. It seems to be written from the perspective on one story that is clipped into multiple books. And this one was so close to standing on it's own.

Overall the book read great, I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the second book. Some of the elements the author uses to push the story along do not stand on themselves in this book and that's a sore point for me, take as the series as a whole this doesn't matter much. The book is a good read and I look forward to the next.

The second entry into the bowl of souls series is a step in entirely the wrong direction. The problems with the first book in terms of story cohesion and character motivations are magnified in this book.

I get that with stories like this you have to suspend disbelief but at this point disbelief has been hogtied and thrown in the river, nothing seems to make sense in this world where absolutely everything happens exactly as its supposed to in order for the story to progress.

I think the thing that really impressed me the most is the fact that I felt there was no lag or downtime between one book or the other one.

I have read through this books twice now. Both times I have laughed and shook my heads at some of the antics of the main character. It is a little darker than the first book, but considering what is happening that is understandable. We still have some major questions that need to be answered, but that is understandable since there is still more coming. I really hope that the next book is coming soon. I would like to read it. I will be first in line to buy it.

This book deals with more training for Justan. He does not do well with the change in enviroment at first the next we know he is nicknamed Professor Justan and is holding a class. LOL... If you want to know why read this book. Make sure to read the first one first it is only .99 at Amazon.com for the kindle edition.

I have now read the third one. I hope he keeps up the good work.

I'm barely hanging in there with this series. It's not bad, but the author needs to tighten up his writing, cut to the chase, and create a cohesive plot with clear connections between scenes. Some scenes felt unnecessary to the main plot. Some actions didn't suit the character traits the author is striving to portray. And for me, there's a bit too much bloody battle and evil torture, etc. Plus, the dialogue is weak and the camaraderie between the protagonists doesn't quite ring true. The Dwarf, especially, gets on my nerves. His portrayal is overplayed.

I do like Fist and the elf.

And at least there is no sex and little swearing, even though there's so much blood and guts.

The price is right, so I might try one more book in this series, even though the series feels too long for such a simple plot (kill him and keep him dead already).

The second book was just as good as the first but reverse :) the beginning in this one was better than the ending but still good :) all the magical stuff in this one is pretty awesome i believe the magical system could be more complex it's kinda like a mix of biology and chemistry in a spiritual form in my opinion but it is still pretty cool kinda annoyed by the main characters magical ability but i still have hope for him :) and him getting a weapon that "Sings" XD definitely one of my favorite book series so far :)

Mr Trevor where have you been all this while. Its been a while since I got so nicely drawn into a world creation. The last I remember is Jim Butcher dragging me into Alera. But Trevor's style continues to be his simplicity in narration. There are no sudden upheavals or dramatic discoveries. Each protagonists POV is beautifully crafted so much so you begin to fall in love with many of them. There is an innocence about it that keeps you smiling at most times. And through it all there is progress to the plot and some interesting sub plots. Lets see where we go from here!

Yet another excellent instalment of the Bowl of Souls story. I can not fault this guy or his books, true entertainment! Each chapter makes me love Justan, Fist, Qyxal and the rest of the cast more yet makes me hate Ewzad more... which Trevor informs me is exactly what he wanted us as readers to do. Onto book three!

I tried book 2 in this series because it gets good reviews.

Bad idea — there is little-to-no conflict of significant throughout the entire book. Characters are poorly developed and are basically fantasy stereotypes. Oh, and the main character is a whiny demigod. This reads like a dumbed-down Modesitt novel.

I devoured this book. Didn't want to put it down.
Book 1 opened a lot of doors. Book 2 (this book) tackled a lot of what was opened. But of course the adventure continues... and I can't wait to get started.
The characters are interesting and fun to get into.
The writing is not subtle - the author typically tells you what they all think - but this is fine with me - easier to follow.

Messenger of the Dark Prophet

For me it's a toss up. Book 1 & 2 are equally good. The two are seamless and take you into a world of magic an mayhem fit for any fantasy fan.

Same style and pacing as the first book. Although I had to wonder why he consistently blew off people who had something important to say.

What the hell is this sudden torture porn!? What the absolute fuck??? I didn't need this shit.

The first one was mostly a lighthearted power fantasy YA novel. I didn't love it, but it was kind of fun. The second book however has just so many things wrong with it, I don't even know where to start.

The protagonist is still completely overpowered, as in: the ultimate chosen one, special in every way, fails at nothing, except when it's convenient - and even then, he always gets a nice excuse so it isn't really his fault or a weakness to be overcome.

The book suffers from what a lot of fantasy series do: characters keep being introduced, and the author refuses to let go of them. A super uninteresting antagonist from the first book? Now gets his own scenes, despite being insufferably uninteresting (seriously: of all the characters... why!?). The actual antagonist? Now constantly gets his own scenes, to - I suppose - create foreshadowing? Except everything has been foreshadowed to death over and over again, and his scenes are just annoying and boring. Yes, I get it: he's evil, and voldemort... sorry, Sauron... no, sorry the "dark prophet" is super evil too and makes everybody his slaves. I kind of understand how the series is so long now.

Same for most characters: now they all get their own scenes, and it constantly interrupts the story I signed up for. What do I care what some random ogre does? I really really do not care about 90% of the characters, and yet most of the story isn't about the initial main character anymore. I suppose they will become a convenient Deus Ex Machina later on...

I also feel like the series could do with some sort of trigger warning for the constant rape, torture and child killing content. It's never been explicit so far, but the antagonists are all rapey, and rape is implied in several places in the book. I didn't sign up for this. I wanted a light hearted fantasy read, not this depressing experience of rape, violence, genocide and constant death. I should've probably seen it coming after "that" scene in the first book.

Also, the antagonist is insufferable, and not in a good way. It's the usual psychopath antagonist: he's evil for the sake of being evil. He has no proper motivation other than being bad. How creative. He also talks weird and is omniscient, as per usual, and obviously he's not the actual antagonist but just his servant - so later on there can be an equally boring antagonist replacing him and stretching the thin plot out further. I don't understand why you would dedicate multiple books to this BS.

A shame, because I somehow enjoyed the first one. This was just way too depressing for me considering how little it had going for it. I can just see the entire series in front of me now: more and more characters being introduced, 9123 different storylines going on at the same time because the author can't stick to one plot line and make it interesting... and that insanely boring antagonist will just keep being boring, while the protagonist gets more and more overpowered. I might give the third one a chance in the hopes it gets better, but I seriously doubt it.

Mostly, I'm pissed off about the out of place dark content. I could've lived happily without the child murder, rape and constant torture. Some kind of warning would've been appreciated. It also feels kind of out of place... I don't understand what it's doing there at all, in a book that seems to be written for a YA target audience primarily, judging by the immature, whiny protagonist.

"You are who you are, Justan. It is accepting who you are that is the hard part.”

The sequel to the 'Eye of the Moonrat' titled 'Messenger of the Dark Prophet', continues off almost immediately after the first book. In this we revisit the characters and Justan as he adjusts to school at the Mage academy. Thing have a different feel as he makes new friends as well as new enemies in this new environment. As his school work is progressing, the story continues for Deathclaw and Fist. It has to be said that their part in the second book isn't as big as it was in the first.

There are memorable characters that are introduced within the school namely Vincent, the absentminded Gnome and professor Beehn the magically strained but encouraging groundskeeper. Both of which I hope we will be revisiting later on despite where the story had taken our main character halfway through. Jhonate has small POV sections in the book but not really much to note other then the situation that you are already aware of as the reader.

The Magic system is interesting, although I wished there was a little more time invested on actually explaining how it operated. A down side to this though is that I feel the lack of explanation is used to cover some of the things that the Villian can, and uses the excuse 'he is just that powerful'. I feel almost like he can break the rules of the magic system but since the system isn't really explained to us, it's not really breaking the rules. It was just a small detail I noticed but one that was in the back of my head as I read of their encounter.

Overall I'm still interested in where we are going with the adventure, I'm hoping that the plot and story telling gets more involved as we go along but either way I'm still having fun in the process.

A Finely Edged Tale

Wow. Where to start... This book was, in 1 word, satisfying. This isn't a story that relies on sloppy or lazy techniques. I found everything to be fleshed out and well done. I feel like the only questions I have are the ones I'm *supposed* to have, and now I want the next books! We have, as to be expected, some new characters and some of the same. Justan is certainly growing and I'm really looking forward to learning his story. His progression of physical prowess and now magical is so desirable, I think, because we're starting at the beginning! I've seen so much fiction where it's just a gaping plot hole between characters being green / raw recruit or whatever and then suddenly they're all Aragorn, Legolas, or Gandalf! Justan started out with some huge character flaws, and that makes him real. Book 1, he was raw, and he was arrogant. He got better :)

I've really enjoyed the narration by James Foster. He's very talented and it has been a pleasure to listen to him. He distinguishes characters and maintains the voice of each character well. I will pay him the highest compliment I can think of - I am planning to purchase other works based largely on the fact that he is the narrator!

Thank you, Trevor Cooley, for the awesome reading time!

Clever, witty, fun, well done.

This is one of the best stories that I have read recently. It may well be five star worthy. There is an element of timelessness that could keep these books on bookstore shelves for decades, for me that is an element required for five stars. The dialog is varied and almost unique to the individual characters. Occasionally there are (slips?) statements that feel like they were better coming from a different character, but it is rare. For the most part the multiple points of view are well handled, some quick cut-aways read more like vignettes than true updates of the story. All tiny quibbles that can be found in any book.

I got this book through Kindle Unlimited for free. I am following this author and intend to read the rest of his work in this universe.

20% of the way through, and I don't think this series is for me. The main character seems like a Mary Sue through and through. Everything he does is perfect. Wherever he goes he is loved. Whatever he attempts he is the best at it. Blah.

It was fun seeing the wizards play a version of Pirate Bridge and then talk about what seems like Contract Bridge as the next level.

An enormous plot-hole detracted from my enjoyment. How could the evil Duke do everything he did without word spreading further? Were there no disaffected town's people who sought redress from the king? Apparently, all that is needed for evil to prosper is for 100% of good men to turn a blind (and stupid) eye.

Aside from that, this was a decent read.
