Billy Kane, a teacher in a private academy, inherits his grandfather’s mansion in River Valley, but he doesn’t expect to find three ghosts there. His mother and grandmother made his childhood a living hell, and he wants their ghosts gone, but his grandmother’s ghost won’t let his mother’s ghost leave.
His grandmother’s heir, Kayla Blanton, is crazy about Billy, but he's a teacher in a school that has a morals clause, and her last job was in a topless club.
Kayla can communicate with the ghost, something Billy can't do himself. He needs her, but he can't let himself get too attached or he could lose his job. He's falling in love, but marriage is out of the question. He wants kids, and Kayla can't give him a baby.
I'm a grumpy old lady who lives with an even grumpier old man in a small town in Washington state. I have three grown children, all smarter and more successful than their mother, and one adorable grandson. My favorite kid!
I write mostly romantic suspense, women's fiction, and light paranormal romance novels. Although my plots get kind of involved and sometimes twisted at the end, I don't plot my books out before I start writing. I create characters, throw them into a situation, and let them lead the way. I'd like to think my characters are unique, yet familiar, people you'd like to get to know. People you can root for. People you'll remember after you finish reading the book.
I hope you enjoy reading my books. Please feel free to leave a comment or review.
Ugh - half way through I almost quit the book. But the one storyline I wanted to follow kept me reading: do the couple end up together? And by the end of the book, I didn't really care about that much either! I repeat: ugh. Ghosts? A bit. But the rest of the book became so convoluted they got lost in the storyline. Star-crossed lovers? Yes. She's older and can't have children. He wants a woman who can have his children. I just wanted to scream at them "Seriously?!!!" And then, somewhere in the middle of the book, the author decides to go off on some tangent, lecturing the reader about the need for sex education in the schools. To bring it up, made sense. To shove it in the face of the reader? It was as if the author changed course midstream as to the primary purpose of the book. And I was originally excited that this book appears to be part of a series. And while I liked many of the characters, I seriously doubt I will read the next book. Ugh.
I enjoyed the storyline but the author seems to love to repeat herself. She did it in the first book so much I wanted to scream but I thought I would try one more in the series. Same thing with this book, good storyline but with so much repeat of the same info over and over and over and over, you get my drift. Yeah, yeah Kayla can’t have kids and Billy wants his own kids. You know they are going to figure it all out in the end though I was quite surprised there wasn’t a wedding BEFORE they talked with an adoption attorney.
It is nice they include a bit of the next book. Book 3 sounds intriguing but I know it will be full of repeated story and I just can’t read another one. Her publisher or editor or someone should have told Ms Fineman to stop with the repeating. Really hurts the story and turns off the reader.

I enjoyed the story and the characters, but there was a great deal of sex that was neither erotic nor necessary to further the plot. One of the better plot points was about sex education, and that was well done. I enjoyed the theme of needing to accept the faults of one's parents, I liked the acceptance of psychic phenomena, and the balance of good and nasty characters.
Billy inherits his grandfather's mansion but his abusive and neglectful biological mother and grandmother ghost are there. Kayla is a sweet young lady. She's a hard worker too. She is struggling after all her money was stolen. There's a lot no one knows that happened in the mansion. It's all very sad. I enjoy the series and plan to continue with it.
Could not put this one down until my son said he was starving to death. Did I mention, he is 60 years old and well able to take care of himself. Can't wait for the next book in this series.
I love happy endings. Its just wonderful when the right people meet each other. It does make me laugh when one of them truly sticks there for in their mouth. It is great to watch them try to fix it.
I don't know why it keeps showing as still reading. I read the whole series in one giant orgy of books in a couple of days. I remember how much I liked it so maybe I'll go back for a re-read.
Reading this 2nd book by Sue Fineman, I'm getting a "Waltons" vibe with a little spice, a few ghosts, some really ugly people and a dog named Buford. I just thought I'd throw that one in. This family has had its share of hurt. They are dysfunctional but not so much that it pushes love out of their everyday lives. Quite the contrary, it's that love that gets them through the trials and tribulations of living. Everyone has baggage. This second book is Billy's story and explores the results of people in his life - both good and bad. It's how he got to where he is and how he learns to move on and become who HE wants to become not who others hoped he'd become.
I like stories where people survive in spite of and not because of the influences in their lives. This book does have adult themes because we are dealing with an adult in this one but it's real. I like Sue's books.
I'm acquiring a taste for ghost stories that I didn't know I had. The Ghosts Upstairs by Sue Fineman is her second book in a five part series titled the 'The Kane Family Ghosts.' This is two down for me. I plan to read the other three on the strength of my experience thus far.
Don't be put off by the scary name there's a lot of tenderness to be found within the pages of this book. It's quite a nice romantic tale and you'll find all the warmth and intrigue expected within a Sue Fineman adventure waiting to be discovered. In-fact sharing empathy with the cleaner in a ten bathroom private house is about the only thing in this book to cause alarm. The Ghosts Upstairs by Sue Fineman makes for fine reading. Five stars.
similar to the first story, except Billy Kane has grown up and become a teacher at a private school. When he inherits his grandparents home, he learns why his mother couldn't love him and his grandmother hated him. Of course there is a dirty cop, a damsel in distress and the happily ever after love for Billy and Kayla
