Hannah Taylor inherits her grandfather’s home in Ohio, but there are strings attached. She must share the house with Police Detective Donovan Kane and his family for a year, and if she doesn’t stay, Donovan gets the house. He’s sure Hannah won’t stay the full year and he’ll end up with the house. She agrees to live with him, but she’s not about to give him her home.
In a letter to Donovan, Grandpa said to “find the diaries, open the house, and send the wandering spirits on their way,” but nobody expects the old diaries to lead them to a secret staircase, a body buried in the basement, friendly ghosts, and enough love to last a lifetime.
“Don’t be afraid,” Grandpa said in a letter to Hannah.
I'm a grumpy old lady who lives with an even grumpier old man in a small town in Washington state. I have three grown children, all smarter and more successful than their mother, and one adorable grandson. My favorite kid!
I write mostly romantic suspense, women's fiction, and light paranormal romance novels. Although my plots get kind of involved and sometimes twisted at the end, I don't plot my books out before I start writing. I create characters, throw them into a situation, and let them lead the way. I'd like to think my characters are unique, yet familiar, people you'd like to get to know. People you can root for. People you'll remember after you finish reading the book.
I hope you enjoy reading my books. Please feel free to leave a comment or review.
There are some things I really liked about this book, the house, the hidden compartments and stairs, hidden treasures, the ghosts, old family secrets and likable characters.
There were some things that I didn’t like as much. This reads like a cozy which is good, but explicit sex doesn’t belong in a cozy and didn’t fit here. I didn’t feel the romance between the main characters and the quickly described explicit sex was kind of ick. There were two many story elements thrown in.
I would likely read another if it was free on kindle unlimited, but I won’t pay for another.
This was a very interesting book. It was good. I loved the premise, but there were places when things were stated oddly. I also thought that the ghosts were not very realistic. I mean, everyone could see them. They did things just at the right time. And all of the treasures hidden in the old house! I don't understand how a battered wife in the 1918 era managed to gather so many treasures and hide them from her awful husband. That being said, I did love the idea of all the treasures in the house and all the hidey-holes that were found. It was amusing that the previous owner of the house left it to his prodigal granddaughter- on the condition that she reside in the house for a year along with a family friend, a cop, who also lived in town. Although they both vowed that they did not want a relationship, they were pretty quick to jump into bed. Some of the family relationships were a surprise and I loved that.
Since the book pretty well wrapped up all the family dynamics, I wondered how it could be the first book of a series. The beginning of book #2 is at the back of this book and apparently the cop's now grown-up son stars in book #2.
The best part of this book is how cool the old house is with all the secrets (no spoilers). Hannah had a horrible childhood and young adult life. The best years of her life, so far, were with her father and grandparents. Donovan had a miserable marriage and is, literally, still paying for it. The storyline is really good. The characters are well developed, likeable and entertaining.
This was a very interesting read & the more I read i couldn't put it down. The story line was beautiful & keeps you interested. I fell in love with all the characters it made me mad at times & made me cry at others. I highly recommend this book. Read it you won't regret it.
What a way to begin a relationship. And how many people would tolerate having an ex-spouse live with them? My favorite part was what happened to the mother. Karma is a bitch.
Hated to come to the end of this book, Donnavan and Hannah were a fasanating couple and went through so much together. Looking forward to reading all of this series.
When the title said 'ghosts' I thought Sue Fineman has gone commercial (a bad word). The last thing I need is 'things' sharing my darkened bedroom knowing the power is about to fail in the middle of a bloodcurdling scream.
Anyway, I purchased 'The Ghost in the Basement,' book one of the Sue Fineman 'Kane Family Ghosts' series on the strength of Sue Fineman past pleasures.
I had no reason to be concerned. This is a wonderfully light entertaining journey into the nicest blood stained murder haunt I've ever visited. An example of story telling at it's finest.
Within minutes of finishing this novel I downloaded books two and three in the series, `The Ghosts Upstairs' and `The Ghost at the Farm' (and it wasn't because I couldn't sleep). --- Yet I still cringe thinking about what I may have done. Sue Fineman is walking on very thin ice for bringing her ghost stories into my bedroom. As a precaution I've added her name to a list of dentists, etc I visited without receiving a physical or emotional scar. --- I'm probably being silly because a title is just a name on the cover. There is always something delightful and very forgiving in the telling within a Sue Fineman novel. Five stars.
I really liked this book. Sure, there was remodeling of the house involved (a criticism by another reviewer), but it was part of the story.
It isn't a spooky ghost story - the ghosts are loved ones, but the mystery and family in the novel made it an enjoyable read.
Will admit I skipped/skimmed the sex stuff; I wanted the story. Luckily, the blow by blow doesn't overtake the book, it's mostly about a mystery, romance and family... with a few ghosts thrown in for entertainment.
The Ghost in the Basement is another terrific story by Sue Fineman. As always, her characters are likeable and have depth. The ghosts are really cool, the romance is hot, and there's a subplot featuring a disgusting villain. I couldn't stop reading and was sorry to see this story end. Donovan Kane and Hannah Taylor are engaging characters, and I found myself rooting for them all through the book. I loved the ghosts too. I can't wait to read the other books in this engaging series.
If you like ghost stories (and I do!) this is a very entertaining book. Although everyone seems to get thrown together too fast, it makes sense as the story progresses. Their individual stories come out and the reasons for the situation they find themselves in becomes clear. I like a book that makes me a little nervous, makes me laugh, makes me shed a tear and entertains me. This book did all of that. I will be reading more of this series.
a once a upon of time and happily every after story. Hannah returns to Ohio upon learning she is the heir to her grandparents estate. She doesn't know her grandparents are playing matchmaker and she must live for a year in the house with a family friend and his son and father. As time goes on they fall in love, fighting to protect what is Hannah's from her mother and a dirty cop.
Awesome! I love that the main character is a strong women. I like the ghosts in the house and all the secret hideaways. I like the romance that gradually took place. I feel you will enjoy this book if you like romance and ghosts.
