Bringing the Dragoneers Saga to a satisfying close and leaving the door open to further adventure, M. R. Mathais’ The Confliction is an enjoyable novel, set in a complex and well-imagined world, with the sort of exciting battle scenes that just beg to be seen on a movie screen. Readers should probably start with the earlier books, but, as a reader who very quickly forgets what she’s read before, I can reasonably claim the story will still be interesting without reading them.
As a well-planned saga, this series involves a lot of fascinating characters in a world filled with detail. Earlier books have built up the mystery of the dangerous prince, the magic of body-swapped king and adviser, wise witches, fallen druids and, of course, dragons. The dragons and their riders are the heroes of this tale, independent yet tied by allegiances to friends and humanity, powerful yet limited, and pleasingly loyal to each other.
New enemies and allies are revealed in each book, and this one’s no exception, building new threats nicely on hints from previous tales, and even adding a hero whose background, though untold, feels perfectly right for the land. Extra details explaining past events are smoothly and satisfyingly woven into the tale. And the final battle is very expertly told.
This third novel seems shorter, more precisely edited and faster-moving than its predecessors. For me at least, it reads like the best in the series. I’m looking forward to more, but it’s nice to see the completion of this part of the tale.

Disclosure: I received a free ecopy of this novel from the author in exchange for my honest review.

I can strongly identify with the main characters. The dragoneers were the so-called protectors of their world, and the dragons, their ally, although they can also be on the opposing pole. They fight to protect their world from the bad guys, but the bad guys aren't normal human beings, they aren't even the typical wizards and witches. You should read Cold Hearted Son of a Witch before reading this book because the revelation of the Sarax's existence were stated there. As a reader, are given a chance of becoming an insider. You will feel and see what it it's like to be part of the dragoneer's world. The author doesn't even have to spell out everything. Every sentence speaks to itself. You aren't told what to see or feel. You are part of the group. This fantasy is a success in many ways, from the great interpretation of personal struggles to ethical debates that transcends in various aspects. Mathias was able to strengthen the bond between the characters but he also didn't leave us with gaping mouths. He deliberately included us in this rare journey.

Dragoneer Book 3

The Confliction is here and it will take the Dragoneers and all of their allies if there is any hope of surviving the alien monstrosity with an insatiable appetite for all living beings. The outcome is grim and only a coffin chore away from total annihilation.

I thought it was a nice touch that even former enemies fought together against the common threat.

What an ending!

Oh my! What an epic battle between the Dragoneers, Richard and the alien creature. Many good people were lost to the ravenous appetite of that massive thing. Many stories have yet to be told…Jenka, Zah, Herald, Richard, and many more.
What a magnificent world we are sharing with these characters!

My heart was in my throat so many times during this story that I lost count. My fear for my heroes actually caused me to dream about them when I would finally lay my head down at night. However, my imagination in no way did the descriptions in the book justice.

There is a new enemy in this installment and it makes the Saxans look like kittens. I was really worried and even shed a tear or two while reading the story. My faith that they would overcome never wavered though.

King Richard is still full of surprises and keeps you wondering on which side of good and evil he is going to fall on. Rikki’s presences is getting stronger as the series continues and I cannot wait to see him come into his own.

I give this book 5*****stars, there was never a dull moment while reading and I never regretted choosing this book as my next adventure.

In the last part of ‘The Dragoneers Saga’ trilogy, Dragoneers have to fight many battles and not only with Sarax, but sometimes even with themselves. Two lovers (Jenka and Zah) must suppress their feeling for each other as they are always Dragoneers first. It was a huge surprise to me, when Rikky finds out Zah is pregnant. However, there is a lot of indifference too (for example, Jenka is horrified with herald’s injuries and is almost crying, but he forgot about his mother dying quite easy.) And it looks like reversed God complex when March says : They (people) ‘ll either survive or they won’t (implying it doesn’t matter whether Dragoneers stays or not).

I appreciated that the main enemy (Sarax and master alien, which was by the way really described in detail - with veined albinic skin and changing forms) has some connection with Gravelbone, so it’s not like in every part is a different opponent. I liked too that even in this third part there is a new character Andoal (Mountonian) introduced. Again, there were some moments that simply don’t pass into this book (with dragons and trolls, goblins etc.): …twin rays of cherry shot from his eyes. They sliced through everything they contacted. or kind of gross descriptions like this: He was just the first of cocooned pupa stage of metamorphosis. The Sarax were the caterpillar, eating their fill of human meat so they could cocoon and change into foul ivory-horned vermin masters like Gtravelbone.
And maybe it would be a good idea to name the last chapter differently than ‘Climax’; especially when other chapters are named according the story.

So, here I’d like to sum up the whole trilogy.
What I didn’t like:
- how Jenka and all Dragoneers are willing to die in the battles (without describing more of their inner thoughts, it sounds exaggeratedly)
- how people are being butchered, killed, consumed, eaten alive, munched down in every chapter with all details which aren’t horrifying, only disgusting
- how in the end of every chapter somebody fainted and thought he/she was dead (You’ll definitely notice this if you read the book, e.g. Last thing he remembered…or After that there was nothing …or After that, all she could see was the black of her eyelids as she fainted away from pain)
- how every part of the trilogy has a different style (book cover, even the size of letters – as if every book in trilogy had to have exactly the same number of pages, so in every book you’ve got different size of letters )

What I did like:
- rich world of supernatural creatures (except for Sarax): dragons, witches, trolls, orcs, ogres etc.
- every character has a role or a mission, no one is forgotten
- interesting solution in communication through ethereal

This was the third instalment in the Young Adult Fantasy thriller series. The story picks up where it was previously left, with the new King circling his realm upon his Nightshade and the Dragoneers in their castle in the mountain taking turns in guarding the strange ship belonging to the Sarax. When circumstances change dramatically, something sinister, the cause behind the Sarax stirs from its life inside the ship and calls out to somehow cease control over all the druids including Zah. Jenka, in shock discovers Zah as she breaks the Sarax free from their new prison, acting under the control of the monster inside. They escape to the castle, yet the source, is now free and heads towards populations to feed upon the innocent.

Once again M.R. Mathias has written an exciting book, as the Dragoneers are thrown into many new challenges and discover even more powers they didn't realize they had. As the new monster feeds it grows ever stronger and changes shapes. Will the Dragoneers find a way to defeat this terrible monster? Can Jenka pull a rabbit out of a hat again and come up with some heroic act of valor? Can the new King come back from his corruption and lead his people and help the Dragoneers?

I found this book just as nail bitingly good as the first book. It is filled with action from start to finish! I was gladly surprised at the end to discover that the story will continue beyond the three books, with the next installment due in 2013. I really enjoyed the character Marcherion as his somehow discovers strange new powers in this book with no explanation, and I wonder if this will play a part in later books? Also the romance between Jenka and Zah has deepened which was good to see. This book however was the shortest of the three, but does come with a related short story which I enjoyed.

First of all, I do not want to give readers the impression that The Confliction is a gloomy, miserable book, although there are certainly many emotionally charged moments in here. Character develops slowly but the whole story flows fast, and romantic relationships are not the mushy types, thanks to M.R. Mathias for that. The conflicts presented in this book are intriguing although the first book was the best of the series. It's obvious that Mathias was influenced by a lot of fantasy authors, but I like it that he didn't pour everything, every style in one series. You pick one book and it's as interesting but pleasantly unfamiliar from the ones you've read before. This particular book is a compelling read about tragedy and deliverance - the final battle is nerve-wracking. The situations are complex here and it's hard to be any of the conflicting parties. The character tends to jump from one place to the next, and I see that as an advantage to impatient readers like me, for those who want to savor their books slowly, it may annoy them to death. Overall, this is another great episode from a well-loved series. I'm sure a lot of fans are thrilled about this.

Another breathtaking ride to the wonderful world of Royal Dragoneer Saga. In this sequel, our favorite dragoneer heroes come face to face with the Sarax. If you've read book two, you know what that's about. These creatures that were introduced in Cold hearted Son of a Witch take their stand to fight our heroes. You can only imagine what ensues in the most crucial battle of the dragoneers. Magic-filled action scenes are exquisitely rendered by the master storyteller, M.R. Mathias. He writes using different perspectives but what I like best is how he incorporates humor and light-hearted tone in many dialogues between the characters, amidst the tension and lassitude of a scene. I find the series promising the first time I got hold of book 1, and the author continues to amaze me with his style and unusual talent. One point I have learned from this book/series is that nothing is what it seems. The characters you first thought to be someone become somebody else in the long run. Things are not what they appear to be - and that clearly provides suspense to the whole reading experience. I congratulate Mathias for another captivating tale.

Not as I've expected but a truly remarkable way to end this book. The Dragoneers have kept me sane for the last few days that although I almost didn't finish it (lost my Kindle from an office accident), all the time and money spent was well worth it. You will meet the Sarax in this book that is if you haven't read about them in the second book yet. It doesn't really affect the story but for an easier reading experience, go search that book first. In my opinion, Mathias strongest point is writing interesting, but not overblown fiction. He has a sort of discipline in writing. I can sense that he strays away from putting too much unnecessary info in his books. Especially those that don't propel the story forward. The Confliction has a great mix of fantasy elements, and he has successfully combined these elements to create an astounding tale about heroes and their dragons. True fans of fantasy will be amazed by this book. Not only for his fresh take on the old dragon legend, but for his fluid writing and sensible plot. If you're a dragon fantasy lover or simply a minion of great storytelling, The Confliction is for you.

This is a complex story. It started in book one and continues here. You must be able to think and engage your mind fully to appreciate this story. This book is jam packed with bad guys and all their wicked powers. It was terrific. I think this is the best one of the series so far. It has so much going on it can get a little confusing trying to keep it all straight but it was fun.

The Dragoneers face a lot of new challenges and start to discover their full power. They have an awesome array of powers and in this book we discover more of them. The dragons and their riders face a tough set of tasks in trying to defeat the Sarax. But they are up to it. It may not be pretty but they get it done.

Jenka is still the main character but we see more of the other characters in this book. They play bigger roles than before. There is still that sense of irreverence throughout the book that the first two had. The battles are just as bloody as the first books and just as well written. I like the battles the best that is where this author shines. His dialogue can be stilted at times but not in the battle scenes.

All the characters you've come to know are here, with the supporting cast and new actors. Jenka, Zah, Rikky, Lemmy, Aikira; their brilliantly colored dragons and new creatures appear in this, the final Book of the Dragoneer Saga. They face a brutal, climactic battle with alien forces they've never imagined.

I won't spoil the surprises that M.R. Mathias has in store for readers by describing the creatures and events in "The Confliction." I'll let those creations, sparked from his fertile imagination, come to you as you turn the pages.

Mathias has created, in this series, an evolving world in which the Dragoneers become vital protectors of humankind. Each of the dragon riders has his/her unique personality that lends strength to the group, creating a gestalt--the organized whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

The author's fantasy world echoes with the mystery and majesty of Tolkein while standing as a fresh and unique creation. A terrific conclusion to the series.

Highly recommended.

Prepare your favorite tea, coffee or beer and embark on another journey with the dragoneers. I've been waiting for time to read this book, and I loved it! The scenes were exciting, bloody and heart-wrenching. I feel like this book went a few notches up in terms of action and gory scenes. But nothing too disgusting for young adults. The Confliction is an inspiring fantasy, one that many would aspire to write. As for me, I'm more than glad to be just part of the whole adventure, Mr. Mathias has carefully plotted for us. First time readers of Mathias will not be let down by the Dragoneer series; most of his books aren't full of fluffs. They are typically 200 to 300 pages short - you read one book and you would scamper for more. Old time lovers of this series will not find this book lacking in ingenuity. I applaud M.R. Mathias for consistently honing his skills and pushing the boundaries in fantasy storytelling. The Confliction has everything I want in a dragon fantasy and more. The surprising turn of events also didn't stop me from delighting in this book. Well done, M.R. Mathias.

I'm wasn't as blown away as the other reviewers; strange as it may seem. But I'm not disappointed either. I think it's another solid installment but not as dazzling as the other sequels. Maybe it's my subconscious hoping that this series won't end. I have a sense of hollowness - the book leaves a feeling like something hasn't been resolved yet.

The writing is classic Mathias, not outstanding but not mediocre either. It is full of vivid descriptions, lush surroundings and great character dynamics. He is surely a talented writer, that's pretty obvious, but I want Mathias to go beyond the magic and dragons theme. Probably be more inventive and daring. Either way, this is an easy four stars. I would have rated it higher if it wasn't too predictable for me. Another good thing to point out is the perfectly executed action scenes. I think that's what Mathias have been known for, and he surely didn't disappoint in this finale. I've already read and reviewed the fourth edition of the series, which actually quick enjoyed.

Read this series is all I can tell you. The first two books are good and do a nice job of setting up for a big finish in this book. Jenka and his dragoneer friends are in deep trouble. The Sarax have been freed and are now taking over the world. They feed on humans and gain strength every time they do. This in turn will let them "breed". The dragoneers must think fast and come up with a plan.

In the end Jenka and the dragoneers prevail but it was dicey going for a while. The story was fast paced and never slowed down. It was going a hundred miles an hour. I read it all in one sitting and enjoyed each and every page. The Sarax are some of the nastiest things around. They are well thought out and make great bad guys.

Jenka and Zah seem to be destined to be together or are they. I guess we will find out in the next installment. Are the Sarax truly defeated? I hope not because they make for fantastic reading.

In the third installment of M.R.Mathiass "The Dragoneer Saga" we dive head first into The Confliction and the main goal for this story is to drive back the Sarax which ended up loose at the end of Cold Hearted Son of a Witch. I'm a little surprised that the heroes are still a little amateurish three books in but even so you can't help but love the characters and the way they've been developed through the series.

All that being said, this is probably my least favorite of the saga. From feeling a little shorter to many of the situations seeming to be resolved in ways that shouldn't have worked I just wasn't as invested as I was in the first two. It doesn't mean I'll be stopping reading Mathias's work at any time soon but this one just didn't flow as well as the first two installments.

A good read but a little off at times. Well worth reading to finish up the story we've been reading so far but don't expect this to top either of the first two novels.

There is no getting out of it, the Confliction is coming and it will require all 5 Dragoneers to defeat the Sarax and their seemingly undefeatable leader, who is more powerful than anyone ever anticipated.

While I really enjoyed the suspense of this story, particularly given the powerful enemy who seemed to have an endless supply of maguffins, I really felt like this trilogy was not actually wrapped up. There is more to the story coming, but I think perhaps a series is in order, rather than trilogy, perhaps even starting with Clover’s story. All of the Dragoneers seemed far too immature at the end, particularly given their circumstances, so it seems there is far more beneath the surface than this somewhat short wrap up suggests. I also would really like to see more of the dragons, as it felt like they were a bit of an accessory to this story. Still I like the universe as it’s been revealed and hope to see more dragony books in the future!

They always say that the third time's a charm, and The Confliction is living proof. Mathias has granted readers a free ticket to accompany our favorite characters one more time on the backs of dragons, so please be prepared to hold on tight. Each turn of the page guarantees a breathtaking step closer to an ending one couldn't possibly even guess. The author has such a way with words that we get reeled in slowly, yet there is no release in sight until the fanatical finish. This portion of the saga could possibly be the author's best work yet, and many will have a feeling that he's not done yet. Most readers will be overjoyed that there's a sci-fi undertone in this novel where aliens and spaceships enter this world that one can only visit in their wildest dreams. What could Mathias possibly think of next??

It is nothing new from other fantasy books out there. We have a hero (Jenka), dragons and magic the combination that is in the majority of fantasy books. That being said I liked it even though it was nothing new.

The story was told well and kept my interest. I liked Jenka and his dragon Jade. They were credible and well written. I was sucked in from the beginning and was interested throughout the whole book. The bad guys could have been a little more evil. They were too tame for my tastes. There are several twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting so that was a nice surprise. Some of the characters were annoying I am not into the Zah character at all.

I liked the fights and battles. They were just gory enough to be interesting and not over the top. I am glad to see there are more books in the series. The first three have been fun.

This book is standard fantasy. The Dragoneers fight against evil. Sure there are bumps along the way but still predictable. I would have liked him to change things up some more. He did that in the Wardstone books.
Jenka would not be my first choice in a lead character. He is weak and wishy washy. I prefer the lead character to be a clear leader with heroic qualities. Jenka is not that. He kind of bores me. I wanted him to be stronger and more in charge. To be fair all the Dragoneers are kind of that way. They bumble around a lot.

The battles get better the further you go in the book. The Dragoneers pull it together somewhat. In the early battles they are outclassed and come off as clueless. I have to hand it to the author though he knows dragons. They are the best part of the book.

This has been a heck of a fun ride. After reading the final page I was left wanting more. I thought this was it but have now discovered a fourth book. Yay! The story continues. I have become very attached to the Dragoneers.

There is a lot of conflict in this book that is probably why it is named Confliction. I enjoyed all the twists and turns this book took. Hint the big one involves something out of the world. It is a big one. M.R. Mathias is a master at creating stories. They never follow a straight line. That is what makes this book even more exciting.

I believe this is his finest book yet. I have read several of his books including the first two in this series. This by far is the best. His style of writing isn’t for everyone but it is unique. The things he comes up with are amazing. You will see when you read this book. It is out of this world! (hint)

This is the last book in this series of The Confliction Cycle of Dragoneers. It's almost like Alien meets The Lord of the Rings. It had a mixture of science fiction and fantasy all rolled up into one. I prefer the fantasy part with the druids and the elves and dragons myself. In this book the Dragoneers, or the Dragoneer Jenka with his dragon Jade finally defeat the alien who has been wrecking havoc on the world since it has escaped from its cocoon. All of the Dragoneers along with witches and King Richard himself are working together to have the confliction between the world and this ancient alien-being come to an end. I just wish that Jenka and Zah could have had a happy ending in this book. I did like the excerpt from the book Crimzon and Clover in the back of this book. It looks like a book that I need to get next!

This is another book in the Dragoneers saga. There was originally only going to be the three but now there is a fourth and many short stories. I am so glad the author did not end it yet. I am not ready to give it up yet.

In this book Jenka has accidently freed the Sarax but comes to find out they are not the worst thing that is happening. The sarax become more powerful and turn into really nasty things that are far worse. Jenka and the dragoneers must come up with a plan to destroy them and save the world.

The book is full of danger and bloodshed. It is not overly violent so young adults should be fine reading it. I thought the sarax storyline was well written and showed tremendous imagination.

I thought this book would have more pages. It is not any longer than book two. It is a quite a disappointment that it was not longer. Even though I was disappointed by the length I was not disappointed with the book. Does that make sense? Let me explain.

The book has a really good tempo and held my interest. I knew I would like it because I liked the first two books. The story of Jenka and the dragoneers is one of my favorites. In this book we get the full blown impact of the Sarax. The 2nd book hinted at their power but now we know it is much more than we imagined.
The book had a good conclusion that left the door open for more books and now we have a new book. I like the writing style and the way this author unfolds his story.

This is a must read if you have read at least book one. I would not recommend reading this before reading The Royal Dragoneers and Cold Hearted Son of a Witch first. These two books set this book up. The dragoneers find themselves outmatched against the Sarax. They will have to use all their skill and wits to stop their reign of terror. But wait in the midst of fighting the Sarax they discover the Sarax can turn into something way worse. Now they are really in the soup. The book is non-stop from page one and the action is fast and furious. I can't really put into words how much I liked this book and the whole series. But this book is by far my favorite. If you want non-stop action this book has it.

I wanted less dialogue and more fights. I like a good fight. There were a few of them and the last one was a doozy but I wanted more. The twists were not so subtle either. We had hints of them in book one.
What I did like was the alien space invader. That was wicked cool. I think it was a brilliant addition. The Dragoneers again are kind of fumbly bumbly. Sometimes I am amazed they ever win. But they always find a way. Jenka and Jade always ride to the rescue.

The book was the perfect length and I read it very fast. It was easy to follow along and I never got mixed up like I did with the Wardstone books. This had a smoother flow and fewer characters. The dragons again steal the spotlight. They should be the focus. I like them better than I like most of the people.

I just recently discovered M.R. Mathias. I had never heard of him before. That is a shame because I really like his books. I could have been enjoying them for years. But the plus side is I didn’t have to wait for books to come out. Now I will have to wait for the next dragoneer book.

Confliction is a wonderful book that has just about everything in it a lot of fights, dragons, evilness and even a little romance. The dragoneers are starting to pull it together and become good fighters. They are much better at it than they were in the beginning.
The ending blew me away. I never would have predicted that in a million years. I will not spoil it but WOW it was crazy. You just have to read it you will not believe it. It is nothing you would ever expect.

This has got to be one of the best endings I have ever read. Jenka battles an alien and becomes immersed in Dour magic. He then flies off with the red dragon Crimzon. It was totally rocking. I can’t wait to read the next book.

I liked the fact that there was a little weirdness in the end. It made it that much more fun. Jenka and friends are some of the best characters I have read. Of course I am including the dragons in this too. They are pretty awesome. They each have different powers not just breathing fire.

I just finished The Emerald Rider which is the next book and it's good.
