I gave this wonderful (and large) collection of stories away as I was packing for one of my many moves. I've often wished I hadn't. All the same, I'm slightly consoled by the knowledge that the person I gave it to has enjoyed it about as much as I did.

"An Evening Performance": 3
- An ignominious start. This is the danger with trolling the decades-old mid-list, that you’ll come across far more Saturday Evening Post fluff, then even a mediocre grasping toward writerly stuff. Here, it’s a small town, Southern tale, with a small-minded, southern turn, told, on top of it, with the treacly faux distance of sentimentality run amok. Story: some itinerant circus folk come to town, and pull off a tough stunt, although none are too satisfied.

"King of the Mountain": 7.75
- More enigmatic, this one — in which the situation, as topical as they come for a certain superficially “liberal” minded southern moderate in 1958 (so no points there, bear in mind), presents itself as a do-gooder peon, up winds up with a bit more roughness on its edges, not that it’s that much, mind you. In the telling, however, we are not too far from the mainline of the day. STORY: boy reflects on his father, a depression-era small Florida town lawyer, battling against the local KKK powers that be after getting beat up.

George Garrett was a gifted storyteller. His tales reach up out of the page and draw your attention. A fabulous variety of characters including some fully realized females.

I should have reviewed right after reading. I know I enjoyed these short stories, but can not tell you why.
