Christiansen Family #1

Take a Chance on Me

Rate this book
2014 Christy Award winner!Darek Christiansen is almost a dream bachelor—oldest son in the large Christiansen clan, heir to their historic Evergreen Lake Resort, and doting father. But he’s also wounded and angry since the tragic death of his wife, Felicity. No woman in Deep Haven dares come near. New assistant county attorney Ivy Madison simply doesn’t know any better when she bids on Darek at the charity auction. Nor does she know that when she crafted a plea bargain three years ago to keep Jensen Atwood out of jail and in Deep Haven fulfilling community service, she was releasing the man responsible for Felicity’s death. All Ivy knows is that the Christiansens feel like the family she’s always longed for. And once she gets past Darek’s tough exterior, she finds a man she could spend the rest of her life with. Which scares her almost as much as Darek learning of her involvement in his wife’s case. Caught between new love and old grudges, Darek must decide if he can set aside the past for a future with Ivy—a future more and more at risk as an approaching wildfire threatens to wipe out the Christiansen resort and Deep Haven itself.

I can't help be amazed at the gifts God has delighted me with - a wonderful husband, four amazing children, and the opportunity to write for Him.

I've been writing as long as I can remember - I won my first book writing contest in first grade! Over the years, writing has become, for me, a way to praise God and see Him at work in my life.

Although I have a degree in Mass Communications from the University of MN, my real writing experience started when I penned the The Warren Report - a bi-monthly newsletter that detailed our ministry highlights.

Living in Russia meant I never lacked for great material - and those experiences naturally spilled out first into devotionals and magazine articles and finally into my first published story, "Measure of a Man," in the Tyndale/HeartQuest, Chance Encounters of the Heart anthology.

Susan and husbandI grew up in Wayzata, a suburb of Minneapolis, and became an avid camper from an early age. My favorite fir-lined spot is the north shore of Minnesota - it's where I met my husband, honeymooned and dreamed of living. The north woods easily became the foundation for my first series, The Deep Haven series.based on a little tourist town along the shores of Lake Superior. I have to admit - I'm terribly jealous of Mona, the heroine of my first full-length book, Happily Ever After, a Christy Award Finalist published in 2004 with Tyndale/Heartquest.

Our family moved home from the mission field in June 2004 -- and now we live in the beautiful town I'd always dreamed of! God has amazed me anew with His provision, and blessings -- and allowed me a season when I can write full time for Him.

I 'm delighted you've stopped in to visit. My hope is that you'll be blessed and encouraged by soul-stirring stories of regular people interacting with a God who loves them.

I'd love to hear from you! I love getting mail, especially from readers and I welcome your questions and comments. Write to me at susan@susanmaywarren.com. And, if you're interested, sign up for my newsletter, a quarterly sneak peek into upcoming releases and projects. Thank you for your interest and support.

God Bless and Happy Reading!

I read Take a Chance on Me in just a few sittings...would've been one if I didn't have a little thing called a day job getting in the way. But I absolutely adored this first book in Susan May Warren's new Deep Haven spin-off series. She's set up a wonderfully fun and unique family with characters I know I'm going to enjoy getting know more and more in subsequent books.

As for the main characters in Take a Chance, Darek and Ivy tug at your heart from the first chapter. Their backstories, their hopes, their fears...so relatable. I loved the storyworld, as well. The plot moves along at the perfect pace--quick enough to keep me turning pages, but unhurried enough to give me time to truly connect with the characters.

And Tiger? My new favorite pretend kid. :)

Fabulous first entry in a series I know I'm going to gobble up.

I am so glad I took a chance on this novel. I absolutely loved it! The story gripped my heart from beginning to end. Following the lives of 3 best friends and a new comer was interesting, exciting, and at times heartbreaking. The events that led each character to where they are at this point in time were each traumatizing in it's own way, but watching them grow, triumph, and overcome their pasts gave me immense satisfaction in the story. "Take a Chance on Me" is filled with many real-life issues. The rawness in regards to the internal suffering (mind battles) the main characters experienced, was palpable. I could feel the angst and turmoil with self, and with each other. The main characters also wrestled with God.

The story began with Ivy's arrival in Deep Haven. She went to the VFW and participated in an auction. Later on, she found herself in a very sticky situation as the Assistant County Attorney. I enjoyed reading about the main characters: Darek, Tiger, Ivy, Jensen and Claire. Felicity is dead, but she was mentioned throughout the story, because the case surrounded her. Ivy's experience growing up as a foster child, added lots of intensity to the conflict of the story. I was happy for Claire when she was able to sort out her path in life. Jensen hung in there, and stayed focused on his community service, although the entire town hated him. All of the main characters, with the exception of Tiger, lived with some bitterness. The more I came to know Darek, I kept thinking of this quote by Marianne Williamson. "Unforgiveness is like drinking poison yourself and waiting for the other person to die." Darek's struggle with forgiving Jensen, caused him so much grief. His inability to forgive, ate away at him. He was in a self-made prison.

Quotes from the book:

"The longer you keep walking in anger toward God and your lot in life, the longer you will stay broken."

"Take a chance on God. After all, He took a chance on you. I'll bet He can fix this."

The scripture usage was great. I enjoyed piecing parts of the story together. The synopsis mentioned that a wildfire took place, so that was not a surprise. Although the wildfire was a catastrophe, it added to the excitement of the plot. This book is a Deep Haven continuation, but it also has a different feel due to the family dynamics. I enjoy reading about siblings. The fact that there are six siblings in total, makes me excited. They all have different interests, so I can just imagine how each of their stories will be told. I really like the way the characters' emotions were written throughout the story. Whenever I read Warren's books, I always ask myself how I would feel in the characters' shoes. When I read their internal dialogues, and I get in their heads with the descriptive writing, I become so invested in them. I have to remind myself that they are only fictional people. They feel like real people! "Take a Chance on Me" is evidence that there are more characters to become attached to. I love how I never have to say goodbye to anyone. It was fun seeing characters that I have read about in previous books.

Tiger was my favorite character. My favorite lines of his are: "I went on an 'venture." "I wasn't lost Daddy. Next time, give me a map." 😆 LOL! That gave me a good laugh. The story had such a sweet ending! I like how it ended exactly where it began, at the VFW. The story ended how I wanted it to end. "Take a Chance on Me" is a nice start to this series!

I'm always slightly embarrassed to be reading contemporary romance, but oh well ... :)

Characters: All the characters were flawed, realistic people, and I enjoyed reading about the Christiansen family. Family relationships in series are always entertaining!

Language: Clean.

Moral: The main themes were forgiveness and God's goodness. The characters' doubts and struggles with these things were realistic, but I would've appreciated a little more clarity. Some of the discussions were vague and left room for misinterpretation. I know people complain a lot about "preachiness" in books, but I would've liked some more "preaching". :)

Plot: There were enough dramatic and entertaining moments to keep me reading. I did have a little trouble keeping track of the four main characters' story lines and what all had happened.

Romance: Clean. A few kisses. One was more described than I'd have liked.

Writing: I always enjoy reading Susan May Warren's writing. She's got a good style that flows well and complements her stories.

Overall: I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian fiction and contemporary romance.

The females (and the males too actually) were a little too dramatic in this book for my taste. But the plot was cute, and I still enjoyed it. I have a feeling that the Christiansen family is the kind that makes their way into your heart, so I’m looking forward to trying the rest of the siblings books.

The faith content was solid. The characters were portrayed well in real life scenarios. I hope to finish the series one day....
Note to self - make sure to check if Libby has the entire series on audiobook before you invest 11 hours on the first book 😂 haha.

I probably shouldn't have started reading Take a Chance on Me right before bedtime on a school night. Then the next day the book distracted me from grading papers. This became slightly dangerous when my students realized I had a new book by one of their favorite authors. But it was worth the risk. Yes, Take a Chance on Me was that good.

This romantic story is the first in Susan May Warren's new series about The Christiansens: six adult siblings and their parents. What's this book about? Two best friends, Jensen Atwood and Darek Christiansen, become estranged after a tragic accident---when Darek's wife is killed and Jensen ends up sentenced to community service for her death. Now years later both men must decide if they can take a chance on God's forgiveness and the second chance at life he seems to be offering through two smart & savvy ladies named Ivy Madison and Claire Gibson.

I experienced a strong emotional response to Take a Chance on Me. How can you tell if you'll feel the same?

If you've ever had that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach when you fear you've ruined your chance at happiness,
Or felt a hole in your heart because you've hurt someone you love. And it can never be undone.
If life has made you bargain and beg and weep before God
Then, after all that, a moment arrived that stole your breath away---when God offered you a second chance
And you took it. You grabbed it with both hands
And God's grace and forgiveness filled you until you felt like you could soar,

Then you will love this story.

Two characters quickly worked their way into my heart: Jensen Atwood, a handsome, under-appreciated, intent-on-beating-himself-up secondary hero. (Think a younger Jack Shepherd from Lost or John Reese from Person of Interest.) Fortunately, Jensen has Gibs. Jack Marshall Gibson, Grandpop or Gibs to his family and friends, Vietnam vet and man of God. Gibs gives Jens exactly what he needs: love, godly counsel, a good checkers game, and a wake up call. Here are some of Gibs' best lines:

"You can’t make yourself and your life whole again. God can.”

“Has it occurred to you that God might be trying to get your attention? He longs for your heart more than your good acts.”

"So plan A is a bust. God can make a plan B better than plan A ever would have been."

There was a lot of great ratings and ravings over this series and I thought I should give this series a try, so when it was available at the library I made sure to get it before someone else gets to it.

I really enjoyed this story - Tiger was my favourite little character! Darek, Ivy, Jensen, Claire and Nan had so much emotions and struggles to work through, and the author did a great job in bringing the characters to life. This book portrayed just what unforgiveness and bitterness will do to a person. It was great to see how the characters grew and dealt with their short comings and faced life and fears.

And I was very glad the book ended the way it did.

Recommended to everyone who enjoys Christian Contemporary.

All in all not a bad book. The ending was good. It took me a week but I finally got it done!! The thing I didn't like about this book was the endless description of fire knowledge that the book wanted to get across. Since I audiobook this book I couldn't skip over it. Each time they started on Fire rescue I about went to sleep. The book didn't need 2 whole chapters explain how they were going to fight a fire!! The love interest were slow going as well. I didn't feel any chemistry between the love interests. This was a disappointing read from Susan May Warren which who I love. I guess you can't love them all!!

Take a Chance on Me by Susan May Warren

This is my first time reading the work of Susan May Warren and I'm impressed. Darek Christiansen and Ivy Madison are powerfully-written characters. Warren's wording grabbed my attention straight away and I read the book in one sitting.

I received this novel compliments of Tyndale House Publishers for my honest review. It's a delightful book! You'll most definitely want to take a chance on it!

What is it about SMW that her books are un-put-downable?! Those characters and their arcs just leap off the page.
This one had more fire explanation than I needed, especially in the first half where it was just Darick harping repeatedly on how wonderful being a hotshot is, and the ending with the trial was quite a bit more providential to be believable (I really thought it was gonna go a different direction.)
Really loved the way the story developed and the way the layers interconnected and also all the Christianity.

I was excited to see that my library has this series on audiobooks. This book was a good story to listen to until the end. It reminded me of Susan Elizabeth Phillips in a way. I don’t mind religion in a story, but a huge turnoff for me is being preached at. It seemed like every other word was God. I struggled through because I was invested and wanted to know how the story ended, but I don’t know that I’ll be listening to the rest of the series.

‘Take a Chance on Me:’ A Unique Read!

STORY | Tragedy chases Darek Christiansen from the moment he agrees to do the “right thing” by marrying the girl from his small hometown of Deep Haven. Instead of growing into a good husband and father, Darek was too busy travelling the country as one of the Hotshots, an elite firefighter team, leaving behind what should be his greatest treasures. Now after a brief, tumultuous marriage, Darek’s wife Felicity dies some five years ago. As the eldest in a large family, Darek’s past becomes a subject no one dares to discuss.

Only now the lovely Ivy Madison breezes into town. Following an awkward first impression, Darek slowly begins to open up to the assistant county attorney, little realizing that the woman he is falling for and his own pasts are more entwined than either understand.

REVIEW | Way back when Susan’s “original” Deep Haven books were new releases, I discovered that her prose is a favorite. Her happy-go-lucky plots mix with some emotional turmoil that though sometimes tugs at the heartstrings is never overly melodramatic. Now, she invites us again to the charms of the small Minnesota town. This time, we get to catch up with old friends (including Liza! Will this girl ever get her own story!?), and meet new characters, too. Warren’s style is easy to read and enjoyable; each story seems to be dearer than the last and in particular this novel is one I’m quite fond of. The title plays into more than one relationship – spiritual and family entanglements, helping to guide the reader towards feeling a part of the lives of these protagonists. It’s about more than just pursuing a romantic match, but also about coming to God in moments of despair, heartache and ultimately, the realization that He never forsakes anyone. Sincere thanks to Tyndale and Susan May Warren for kindly providing a complementary copy of this novel for review.

Ivy Madison is the new county attorney in the small town of Deep Haven. She didn't know when she took the job that she drafted the plea bargain that has kept Jensen Atwood serving time of community service for killing the wife of Darek Christiansen. Darek is the town's most ineligible eligible bachelor. He's the eldest son and heir whose family runs the Evergreen Resort. He's a devoted father, but he's also hurt and angry over the death of his wife. As Ivy gets to know both Darek and his family, she finds herself wanting to belong to it. Will Darek be able to let go of his anger and hurt for a chance at a future with Ivy?

It has been a long time since I read one of Susan's books. I really enjoyed this one. The fact this is the first book in a new series is a great bonus. I found the four major characters, Darek, Ivy, Jensen, and Claire to be very real. Each of them needed something, forgiveness really. They each had to learn how to forgive and be forgiven. I am looking forward to reading the next books in this series. It was also fun to reunite with characters from the town of Deep Haven, most of whom I'd forgotten about.

I received this book for free from Tyndale House Publishers for the purpose of reviewing. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Ivy Madison bet on the wrong guy. Literally. She is new in town and goes to a bachelor auction and bets on the most ineligible man. Derek Christenson.
Hes got a past that haunts him but a son that loves him.
Derek fell in love with the wrong girl, Felicity, in a sense that she was dating someone else at the time of impregnating her.
Jenson. (Did anyone else think of Jenson Ackles when reading?) he killed the woman both him and Derek loved. Now hes forced to do community service in the town that hates him.
While Ivys first encouters with derek are less then charming she starts to see past the broken shattered man and really connect, be the one that gives him center and peace that he needs.

Baxter family series by Karen Kingsbury. If you liked that I think you will really like this because of the heart, faith, drama and who doesnt love when kids are a huge part of the partents life.

I loved being introduced to the Christiansen family. Overall this story had a very real feel for me. Some of the characters were not very likeable at first. For example Darek and Jensen. But like in real life as I got to know more of there stories I could understand there behaviour. By the end I loved everybody and can not wait to read the next book in the series.

I can guess in advance that the best aspect of this series is going to be the family dynamics and the Deep haven community :)

I especially enjoyed how the author has included scriptures and biblical principles. It didn’t feel forced. God and the importance of faith in him just flowed throughout the story. I loved that redemption and self redemption was challenged. Also forgiveness, faith and healing.

Recommended for all contemporary Christian fiction fans :).

It looks like it took an incredibly long time for me to read this, but that isn't really the case. I'm close to ocd about reading series in order. I knew that technically this was the first book in a series, but I recognized the town of Deep Haven, so backtracked and in the time since January 25 along with a number of other books I read all of the Deep Haven series. As several had told me, I wouldn't have been lost had I not done that, but it was fun recognizing names as I read, kind of getting updates, though brief, on them. Loved the story and look forward to reading additional Christensen stories.

This is the first novel in the series and features Darek Christiansen and his young son Tiger. The author states, “We are in this season of life…As you nurture your children, then guide them, then walk beside them…and finally stand back as they walk into life. And then you really start praying! These books are about those years…watching, hoping, praying your adult children into a legacy of faith.”

I instantly connected with Darek, Claire, and Jensen and was intrigued at how their lives had intersected and blown up. In walks Ivy Madison new in Deep Haven, Minnesota; and didn't know of the tragedy that had taken place three years back. The incident people were still wondering about. Ivy’s a lawyer. She’s started a new job in town. Her boss warns her about working in a small town, “…Remember, every case is personal…People you know and care about. You might have to give them hard news that their lives are about to change and you’re the one making it happen.”

Ivy hadn't lived in a small town before. She was raised in the foster care system and bounced around. She quickly learns this town has issues and its members are playing the blame game about what happened to Felicity three years ago. Jensen is on probation for a murder rap. Darek is a widow raising his young son, Tiger. And Claire was trying to learn to live with the loss of a friend. This town was stuck, and wounded; the author illustrates how hurting people; hurt people. They all needed to forgive one another and move on but couldn't.

I liked how this author showed how each character was dealing with their faith issues differently and all were woven into the story naturally. Each person had an issue with God and couldn't even think about forgiving; least of all themselves.

I liked how this author makes the reader feel part of this charming town and we all were embraced by and got to know Darek large family. Ivy reminded me of the character Sandra Bullock played in the movie While You Were Sleeping. She and Ivy always wanted to belong to a family. She didn’t want to get her hopes up, like all the other times she thought she’d get adopted and belong to a family. It was hard not to want.

Darek says to his sister …”You all had a conversation about my date?”
“You kissed her in the middle of the sidewalk. What were we supposed to do? Look away? It’s like a train wreck – we couldn't help it.”

I enjoyed this author’s well timed humor too. I liked the transparency of the characters and the way issues were faced by them. Hard choices need to be made and life gets messy. Things heat up in more ways than one and lives are put on the line. Can we trust God?

Leave plenty of time to enjoy every page of this novel. I was emotionally invested and connected with the story and the characters from the start. They jumped off the pages and into my heart. I couldn't stop reading. I had to find out what happened next. I was thrilled I had the next book in this series on my book shelf.

I highly recommend this compelling read just for fun. It would make a great book club pick too. The author has eighteen engaging discussion questions in the back to help you dig deeper. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series, It Had to Be You.

I love finding a new book series to fall in love with! And that is what I feel has happened after reading Take a Chance on Me. This book was wonderful and introduced me to a family that I want to learn everything about. I have had this book on my Kindle for awhile, however, had not gotten around to reading it until now. I knew that I needed to read it, since I have book two waiting to be read and reviewed as part of an upcoming blog tour. I am so glad that I did.

Take a Chance on Me takes place in Deep Haven, Minnesota. This is the setting of another series that Susan May Warren wrote. But don’t worry if you haven’t read that series. You don’t need to read it to understand what is going on in this new series.

In this first book of the series, we meet the Christiansen family. This is a family that really loves each other and stands strong together. John and Ingrid Christiansen own the Evergreen Resort. They have six grown children. Take a Chance on Me is about their oldest, Darek, who is a widower and single father. He has so much anger in his heart. Anger toward himself, his dead wife, his former best friend, God and just life in general.

Ivy is new to Deep Haven. She has never had the love and support of a family or the stability of staying in one town for long. She falls in love with Deep Haven and plans to make her permanent home there as a county prosecutor. Ivy has some issues with believing that God cares, based on things that have happened in her life. Things in her life always seem to fall apart, but now Ivy holds out hope for a family and future. So, when she has the chance to grow close to Darek and then finds that there are some truths that might come to light and tear them apart, she is devastated.

Two other characters, Jensen and Claire, have their own pasts to deal with and their own issues with God to come to terms with. Their back stories, as well as Ivy and Darek’s are interwoven and so very interesting. All of these characters are very well-written. I am really looking forward to reading more from this series.

This is the first book of Ms. Warren's that I have read. Let me just say that it will not be the last! I enjoyed this book immensely! The author portrays life in a small Minnesota town so well it makes you feel like an honorary resident of Deep Haven! Aside from the setting (which became a prominent character in it's own right!), what stood out to me the most was the incredible message of forgiveness, and the fabulous, utterly unforgettable characters. I loved both Ivy and Darek, but I think Claire and Casper (I love that name by the way!) are my favorites, but of course I am crazy about all of the Christiansen's!
If a story includes a close knit family that know everything about each other including how to push each other's buttons which they do often, but on the other hand, will always be there to love, protect, and help each other no matter what, it is bound to become a favorite of mine. As is the case with this book!  I love this so much because I am incredibly blessed to have a family like that in my own life. Combine this with, not one but two very sweet love stories and even a bit of suspense due to the looming wildfire threat, and you have an unforgettable story. While this is a relatively long book at almost four hundred pages, I was never once bored and in fact I read it in just over a day, I couldn't put it down! And oh, man, talk about an epic ending!!! :)
I don't very often read contemporary romance, but I am so glad I read this one, seriously it's soooo good! I highly recommend you all buy a copy and read it as soon as you can!!! It definitely has a place on my keeper shelf and I envision re reading it several times in the future! Oh, and in case it wasn't obvious I can't wait to read the next book in the series!!! Susan May Warren has a new fan in me!

#1 Christiansen Family

A beautiful story of redeeming love, grace, mercy & second chances.

I especially enjoyed Jenson & Claire's story.

Favourite quote:

I’m not hurting them. I’m pruning them so they’ll grow better.
Maybe God had used these years to prune her, to heal her so she could bear fruit. She wasn’t a disappointment or a failure. She simply needed time to bloom. ~ Claire Gibson

WOW! This is one of those books that grabs you from the first page and does not turn lose until the last page. If you've never read a Susan May Warren book, you're in for a treat. If you have, you'll soon discover that this is by far her best book!

Although a spin off from her Deep Haven series, it's not a requirement to read the six book series prior to reading Take A Chance On Me. For me, having previously read the Deep Haven series, it was nice to visit with old friends - Deep Haven is a small town. It's only natural that all the residents know one another.

Darek (Dare) Christiansen lost his wife in a tragic accident - she was struck and killed while out running late one night after having a fight with Darek. The driver of the car was Darek's best friend, Jensen. Darek is angry at himself, Jensen, Felicity, his late wife, and God. All he wants to do is take care of his five year old son, and try and find a way to get his life back on track. There's just one problem. Jensen, his former best friend, is serving out his three year sentence of three thousand hours of community service in Deep Haven. If he doesn't fulfill the hours, he spends four years in prison.

Ivy Madison is the new Assistant County Attorney. She, by accident, meets and falls in love with Darek and his large family. A family she always wanted, but never had a a foster child. There's just one problem. A secret that will destroy her new relationship with Darek. While working as a law student for Jensen's father, she crafted the plea bargain that allowed Jensen to serve community service rather than jail time.

This is not only a story of forgiveness and trust in Gods plan, but of love and hope. The characters are well developed. The story real and believable. I can't wait for book two, Walk On By, to be released to read more about the Christiansen's!

Audio book.

I find that I have the most to say about books that I feel mixed feelings about and not the clear "losers" or "winners." This is one of those "mixed feelings" reactions.

Probably my first beef (let's get that out of the way first) would be the legal ethics/shenanigans. There was the appearance of the author knowing the law and the legal ethics but total disregard for both. I am law trained and could barely read/listen to those parts. I kept yelling (in my mind). It was an ethics train wreck and could have, should have, been handled differently from the get-go. I would guess that a non-law-trained reader would relish the mangling the author did to procedural rules but I did not feel triumphant "love conquers all" about it. Switch from prosecution to defense in the court room before the judge--my eye! Did you hear my "brain scream"? That was just one example.

On the upside, my husband is a wildland firefighter and, from my somewhat removed perspective (having never been on a fire line but having logged endless hours hearing about it), the author's references sounded pretty authentic. I also liked most of the characters, particularly Jensen.

As with most inspirational fiction that I have read/listened to, I start out liking the story and somewhere along the road--the long, long road of the story--I begin to become gradually more and more disenchanted until, by the end of the book, I am barely "into" the book anymore. In this instance it wasn't because the story line stalled to wait for the spiritual conversion, at least not that I could tell, but something transpired on my way to the last chapter so that I went from being so excited about the book and anticipating the series to feeling like I could barely finish the book and I am not overly eager to finish the series.

Darek isn’t the only one whose world fell apart after Felicity’s death. Jensen, Claire, Ivy, Tiger, Nan – truly the entire community of Deep Haven was impacted by the accident. Three years have passed, but the pain and anger still lingers.

Ivy thought moving to Deep Haven would be an escape to a quiet community. Little did she know that she was settling right into the middle of this hurting people. Can this town forgive those “at fault” – and themselves – for all that has happened? Can they repair the relationships they once had, or will the rift remain forever?

Take a Chance on Me is a gripping story of a family and town struggling to pull through after a tragedy. It’s easier to point fingers and blame others for our pain and our circumstances, rather than focusing on the blessings that remain and offering forgiveness. But casting blame only keeps anger brewing inside, and it never truly resolves anything. Letting go of that anger isn’t easy. Claire’s grandfather offers sage advice, not only to the characters, but to each of us (if we’re listening). He shares truth without being “preachy,” speaking that truth with love for those he’s confronting.

The main characters are well-developed, and they deal with the situations they encounter in very realistic ways. They are not perfect characters, but struggle with the decisions they need to make along the way. Sometimes they make the wrong decisions and get themselves into greater messes. As readers, we shake our heads at their foolishness, and yet, don’t we sometimes do the very same thing?

If you are looking for a realistic story that will leave you pondering its applications to your own life, take a chance on this one. I think you’ll find it was worth it!

Review on my blog: http://christianbookshelfreviews.blog...

I've read more than a dozen of Susan May Warren's books and I don't think any of them have disappointed me, so I wasn't surprised that I loved Take A Chance On Me.

There were so many things about Take A Chance On Me that I loved! I'll name a couple of them:

The Setting: I've only read a couple of Warren's "Deep Haven" novels, but I really liked how it was a small-town set in Minnesota. The location and writing-style was just great - it almost felt like Deep Haven and the Christiansen's resort really existed!

The Characters: I loved the way the Christiansens bantered with each other. I found myself chuckling quite a few times as a result of that. ;) I also really liked Jensen and all of the other secondary (though in a way, they were almost main) characters.

The story was very interesting and I thought it was great how there wasn't just one, but two, romance stories in Take A Chance On Me. The ending was really good and I liked how it wasn't a typical ending. I also loved the message of forgiveness/grace.

Overall, a wonderful read! I enjoyed the whole book, but the last so many chapters were especially good. I recommend Take A Chance On Me to fans of contemporary romance novels. It Had To Be You is next on my reading list and I'm beyond excited about it!

*I did not get this book for review. I bought it when it was a Kindle freebie. As always, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*

Susan May Warren is one of the best at creating a family of characters that leaps off the pages. Rugged Derek is heir to the Christiansen family's resort and should be on the top of every eligible bachelor's list. But, he's not. Angry over his wife's death at the hand of his best friend, he's determined to focus on his son and reviving his family's business.

When Ivy Madison moves to town, looking for a place to call home after a childhood of jumping from foster placement to foster placement, she feels sorry for Derek when no one bids on him at bachelor's auction. On their date, sparks fly, but Ivy has a secret, one that could end their relationship before it starts.

Take a Chance on Me is a great start to a new spin-off series. While the book is a little long, mainly because it's two story lines in one, it's full of great characters. Darek and Jensen are flawed but strong heroes. I especially liked Jensen's story, full of pain and regret, and I hope he's in future books.

Most of all, I appreciate how Warren didn't gloss over their pain and anger with Christian platitudes but instead let their raw emotions carry the story.

The Christiansen family is lively and full of stories to come. I can't wait to see what happens next!

I received this book in exchange for my review. My thoughts are my own.

Ivy Madison is Deep Haven's new Assistant County Attorney, and she's looking to put down roots and finally belong somewhere. Starved for love and family, a growing relationship with young widower Darek Christensen, looks like a dream come true. But sooner or later, Darek will learn the truth about her professional involvement in the light sentencing of his late wife's killer. And while she waits for that shoe to drop, a custody battle for Darek's five-year-old son also makes it to Ivy's desk.

I found the beginning and end of the story engaging, and if it had centered around Darek and Ivy, it might not have been slow going. It equally features the story of Jensen and Claire, Darek's estranged childhood friends, also fitting perfectly into the story's theme of forgiveness and the search for belonging. I loved how Claire and Jensen enriched the story, but four main characters seemed to keep them all from depth that could make them memorable. I also found much of the storyline easy to guess.

The author is an amazing writer, so much so, I will probably work my way through the series, even though Contemporary Women's Fiction isn't a genre I get excited about. "Heiress", one of the author's Historical Fiction works, remains a favorite.

Susan May Warren, Take a Chance on Me, ISBN 978-4143-7841-1, Tyndale

You ever pick up a book because of its cover? Or is it the name of the author? Or the title? What makes you look at the back cover to find out about the story, what makes you open the book to page one to get a peek? What drives you check the book out, download it or buy it?

With Susan May Warren's "Take a Chance on Me," you will pick it up because of the cover and the name, but what will grab your eyes, or at least did mine, were the words on the back giving a summary so carefully written that you forget taking a peek in side, you will take the book to the counter and say, I want it!

Darek Christiansen is a brooding bachelor with a dark shadow that seems to be following him - sadness, grief or guilt - as he strives to keep his family's resort and his young son together. Ivy Madison is an attorney who is new in town and doesn't know the history but soon gets involved with Darek and the family in such a way that it reads almost like a non-fiction story out of a life of a family down the street.

Personable and readable, and you most certainly want to take a chance on it!
