Thank you Publishers and Netgalley for allowing me to read this book!

I loved the cute artwork and story! Sofia and the moon were very well crafted characters. I didn’t expect that “save the earth” to appear but it also seemed to fit in and read organically, so I didn’t mind it. The rhymes were simple and had good word choices-nothing overdone other than that “out” twice in a row. I thought some of the informative pages at the end weren’t targeted at the kids. Kids don’t drive or cook. Would the parents read that if they already know about things they can do from hearing it on the news? Overall, it was a pretty good children’s book.

This appears to be a reissue of a book called Sofia's Dream, which came out around a decade ago. It's a decent enough story, with soft and dreamy illustrations... although the narrative does come off as a little preachy and the amount of back matter seems disproportionately large.

A little girl named Sofia makes friends with the Moon. One night, in a dream, she goes to visit the Moon. From that vantage point, she can see the Earth, and she learns about how humans have been abusing her. When she wakes up, she vows to do little things to help.

The rest of the book is taken up with notes. Only 26 pages feature the story, while the other 6 offer tips on saving the planet (most of which aren't going to do anything, and some of which--like picking up every piece of plastic litter you see--are potentially dangerous; does that include used needles?!). I realize that there's not much children can do, but this book's suggestions seem next to worthless. Advocacy and activism aren't really encouraged, and both of those are going to be needed to change what really needs to be changed; reusable shopping bags and "Meatless Mondays" can only get us so far. I also found the tone of the notes a little scary in places. Cancer is listed twice as a consequence of various types of pollution, but without enough context, this could unnecessarily frighten some children.

I sort of like the pictures. They work well enough for this sort of story. They're dreamy and soft and appealing to look at. They have a very definite "bedtime" feel to them. But they also seem to be missing something that I can't quite put my finger on. They're not bad, by any means; they simply don't excite me for some reason.

On the whole, this is a fair innocuous picture book, especially if you stay away from the back matter. Very young children will probably be satisfied with the story alone. Older kids will get more out of the stuff at the end, as long as they're also old enough to understand that not everybody is going to develop cancer from pollution.

Thank you to NetGalley and Little Pickle Press for providing a digital ARC.

Land Wilson and Sue Cornelison have created a beautiful nighttime world of dreams and moonlight in this lovely book. Sofia is a little girl who befriends the moon in her dreams and learns some very important lessons about the fragility of planet Earth. Wilson's gently rhyming verse and Cornelison's soft, dreamy illustrations make "Sofia's Dream" a truly classic children's book, one that deserves to be ranked along with "The Runaway Bunny" and "Guess How Much I Love You." But don't let that fool you- this is a book with a very important message for children and adults alike. The Earth is truly a gift to all of us, and we have to treasure and care for it in any way we are able. The publishers of this book take this message seriously, printing all of their books in an environmentally friendly manner, using post consumer waste and recycled fiber along with soy inks. The books are simply beautiful- until you have held one in your hand you truly cannot appreciate the love and commitment that goes into each one.

I love to read this book to my 4 yr old daughter, also named Sophia (I know, spelled differently). Sofia's Dream by Land Wilson

And for some reason, this is one of the few books where I tear up at times. I only wish there would be more books like "Sofia's Dream".

“The Girl Who Spoke to the Moon” is a precious and inspirational children’s picture book that tells the story of a young girl named Sofia who befriends and visits the Moon in her dreams. The Moon shows Sofia that the planet Earth is hurting and in need of much better care.

“By far the gift of greatest worth is our dear home, this planet Earth.”

The message in this book can help teach children to love the planet we live on, and inspire them to make Earth a better, healthier planet. Also, the text in this book is poetic and easy to read, and the illustrations are beautiful and adorable. I recommend reading this book to or with children of all ages, and discussing its content.

Note: I received this book from NetGalley and the book's publisher in exchange for my honest review, for which I am very grateful.

“The Girl Who Spoke to the Moon” is a precious children’s picture book that tells the story of a young girl named Sofia who visits the Moon in her dreams. She and The Moon become friends. One night Sofia notices her friend is sad, so in her dream The Moon takes Sofia on a journey to show her why he is sad. Sofia discovers that the moon is sad because the planet Earth is in danger and we need to take better care of it. The text is poetic and easy to read with a nice cadence. The illustrations are beautiful. They are done in muted tones with a dreamlike quality. This is another great book to read with children to show them what is happening to the Earth and what they can do to help protect it. There is also information in the back pages for further investigation for older children. Another great book for schools and classrooms to read during a unit on the environment. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. the rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

I received an electronic ARC from Little Pickle Press through Edelweiss+.
Softly colored illustrations enhance the rhyming text to tell this story of a girl who becomes friends with the moon. When the moon is sad, she asks why and has an adventure in her dreams. She and the moon talk about the Earth and what is happening on our planet. The environmental message comes through clearly. A good book to share as a family to start discussing ways to care for the earth though the message is a bit heavy at times.
Informative text at the end offers suggestions and definitions for environmental issues.

Sofia dreams she visits her friend the Moon one night, who shows her how the Earth is suffering because of pollution, and tells her ways she can help make things better. The story is told in a way that is effective without being preachy, with afterwords about how pollution is affecting the planet, and small ways people can help that add up to big changes. It's a sweet story, and a great message, but the real star here is the beautiful artwork. The soft, glowing illustrations have such a dreamlike quality, they're absolutely swoonworthy! A perfect addition to any child's library.

A story of a young girl who, in her dreams, makes friends with the moon. One night the moon asks her to visit so that she can see what the moon sees. When she dreams of this she sees that the planet Earth is in trouble. The moon counsels her on ways to improve Earth's care.

Kinda sickly sweet, but the moon's sadness will engender empathy is readers. Quotes about Earth from astronauts are included.

I think this is a very good book for kids to read when learning about pollution or the Earth. It reminds kids that we only have one world and we need to appreciate it and do whatever we can to keep our home clean.
