MURDER, MYSTERY AND INTRIGUE
Detective Inspector Bernie Bisto romps through this tale which is laced with humour and romance.
The Garlic Murders is an historical detective story with murder and mystery at its heart. Set in the 'roaring twenties' just after world war one it is the first in the series of the ‘Bernie Bisto Murder Mysteries' by Ursula Rubery. The story has as its background the harrowing events of the first world war and its use of chemical weapons in the trenches in France. This legacy does not, however, detract from the story being a light hearted, action packed, historical romantic mystery, laced with much pathos and humour and will not fail to engage the reader.
Detective Inspector Bernie Bisto, womaniser and calamitous colossus of crime, teams up with secret agent Hermione Hush, codename ‘Doublehaitch’ to solve three unexplained murders at Gumshoe Hall, deep in the English countryside. An author working on a report on chemical warfare has lost his head. Another guest at the hotel has fallen victim to a handbag duel and ‘Missup’ the cat has been strangled. This novel provides a delicious mixture of murder, intrigue and fun. Detective Insector Bisto leads a cast of larger than life characters and is prompted to precipitous, amorous and dangerous deeds, spurred on by the smell of garlic.
