Imagine knowing you are going to die. That sucks! But you're an adult. You know that bad things happen to good people all the time.
Now, imagine you have a child. A four year old son. A son that you will not be around to see grow up. A son who you won't have the opportunity to help shape into a man. You think: "I'm not angry at the illness as much as I'm angry about the future being robbed from me."
Then you feel yourself dying and you reach out to your son. It is his job to make the phone call that will change everything.
The way the author writes the beginning of this book is simply perfection. He captures the emotions of both father and son with achingly realistic prose.
The father, whom we later learn is named Niko, has chosen to have himself cryogenically frozen in hopes of awaking in a future where cancer is curable.
When he awakes from his "slumber" he has lost almost all of his memories. He's not even sure what his name is. But he does know that his world has changed dramatically.
Turns out he has been "asleep" for 500 years and the future he arrives in is unlike anything he could have imagined. Even his own body seems different.
Niko must learn to navigate this dangerous new world. His wants are simple. He wants to remember and to find out what happened to his wife and sons.
Get ready for a tale that will have you questioning what it means to be human.
I had some preconceptions about this book and how the story would play out. Those preconceptions were completely shattered as I read more and more of this book.
Not only does the author create a world 500 years into the future that is 100% believable, but he also creates characters that begin to weave their way into the heart and mind of those reading this book.
I was drawn into the story and when it ended I just wasn't ready to stop reading. I know that I HAVE TO get my hands on the next book in the series.
This book is epic science fiction that will touch your heart as well as stretch your mind. The terrific writing and amazing world building kept me rapt. The character development is top-notch and the cliff-hanger ending left me begging for more.
This book definitely deserves a 5 star rating. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I got this book for free through a kindle offer. And I'm glad I did. It is a little contrived in places, and predictable in places but I can forgive it that, enough that I bought the 2nd and 3rd in the series.
This had potential and I at least carried on with it. The writing did drag in places, and 22 uses of "hiding spot" didn't sit well with me. Also, the phrase "could care less" has always confused me and it's used frequently.
I shouldn't have been disappointed at the ending either, because it's a saga, but I was. Ah, well.
Hmmmmmm-- don't know what to think of this book. After I came to the part where "Robotropolis" is first mentioned I should have put the book away, but I finished it. There are few humans left and then there are a few robots who rule and a lot of robots who just follow (typical history-- the haves and the have nots).
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was very hard to put down to do silly stuff, like sleep. I believe this author is quite capable of making this series even harder to put down. Read it. You'll be glad you did!
