Beyond #1-3

Beyond: Volume One

Rate this book
A bundle containing the first three books in Kit Rocha's BEYOND series:

Beyond Shame: A post-apocalyptic princess from the city discovers freedom with bootleggers who live in the brutal sectors.

Beyond Control: The King of the O'Kanes has to choose between power and the woman who loves him as a man.

Beyond Pain: A former sniper and a girl who refuses to break find love and redemption together.

BEYOND SHAME (87,000 words)

All Noelle Cunningham has ever wanted is a life beyond the walls of Eden, where only the righteous are allowed to remain. But ruins lie outside the City, remnants of a society destroyed by solar storms.

Those ruins house the corrupt and the criminal--men like Jasper McCray, bootlegger and cage fighter. He'll defend the O'Kane gang with his life, but no fight prepared him for the exiled City girl who falls at his feet.

Her innocence is undeniable, and so is their attraction. But if she wants to belong to Jas, she'll have to open herself to a world where passion is power, and freedom is found in submission.

BEYOND CONTROL (100,000 words)

Alexa Parrino escaped a life of servitude to become one of the most influential people in Sector Four, where the O'Kanes rule with a hedonistic but iron fist. There's nothing she wouldn't do for the gang--and for its leader. But she bows to no one, not even Dallas O'Kane.

Dallas fought to carve order out of the chaos of the sectors. Danger threatens his people, but his liquor business is flourishing, and new opportunities fuel his ambition. Lex could help him expand his empire--and no one says no to the king of Sector Four.

Falling into bed is easy, but their sexual games are anything but casual. Attraction quickly turns to obsession, and their careful dance of heady dominance and sweet submission uncovers a need so deep, so strong, it could crush them both.

BEYOND PAIN (89,000 words)

Live fast, die young--anything else is a fantasy for Six. She's endured the worst the sectors had to throw at her, but falling in with Dallas O'Kane's Sector Four gang lands her in a whole new world of danger. They're completely open about everything, including their sexuality--but she hasn't survived this long by making herself vulnerable. Especially not to men as dominant as Brendan Donnelly.

Bren is a killer, trained in Eden and thrown to the sectors. His one outlet is pain, in the cage and in the bedroom, and emotion is a luxury he can't afford--until he meets Six. Protecting her soothes him, but it isn't enough. Her hunger for touch sparks a journey of erotic discovery where anything goes--voyeurism, flogging, rough sex. He has only one rule: he won't share her.

In Bren's arms, Six is finally free to let go. But his obsession with the man who made him a monster could destroy the fragile connection they've forged, and cost him the one thing that makes him feel human--her love.

Once upon a time, two best friends decided to write paranormal romance. And while that was awesome, they also sometimes wanted to write insanely dirty stuff that wasn’t paranormal at all. This is that stuff.

Kit Rocha is the dystopian-erotic-romance writing alter-ego of writing duo Moira Rogers.

These books are amazing! I couldn't put them down. Im gutted I only have 2 more new ones to read then I need to wait.
I couldnt put these books down at all, every single time I got to the end of a chapter something big was happening and I needed to keep reading.

If you like your naughty/sex books then they are definetley a must read! The storyline for each character is brilliantly written aswell.

I have read a lot of sex, in a lot of variations, in a lot of books but these are excessive. I tried all 3, but I just couldn't any longer... Will be removing them from my library.

I am continuing my quest to read the books written by the amazing authors I follow on twitter. This review I get a two for one, Kit Rocha is a writing duo – Bree Bridges (@mostlybree) and Donna Herran (@totallydonna). They are smart and delightful on Twitter and you should follow them. As Kit Rocha, they have been writing dystopian erotic romances set within the same future world for several years. Their third series is coming out this fall, published by Tor. I got hold of the first three books of their Beyond series (Beyond Shame, Beyond Control, Beyond Pain) in a bundle for $1.99. As time goes on, I will eventually read all of their books, because they are well-written, fun, have excellent world building, and characters in whom I have become invested.

In the future, solar storms destroy the electrical grid and disrupt civilization. Somewhere in what was the United States, a city emerges called Eden. Eden is a city ruled the way the Christian Right would like – no premarital sex, no extramarital sex, women are wives or daughters, only the cis-gendered and straight are allowed. Around the city are the Sectors where the dirty rabble live – the mistresses and prostitutes, the not straight, the not righteous. The Beyond series is centered in Sector Four where Dallas O’Kane and his gang of bootleggers rule. In addition to making liquor and keeping order in the Sector, they have a lot of sex, publicly and privately.

A couple of years ago I saw a tumbler post explaining why the BDSM community was our hope for civilization in the post apocalypse. It cracked me up because it was absolutely spot on.

What I wanna know is why the spiky kink warriors are always the bad evil marauders. They might be into some weird shit and unafraid to show it but that doesn’t mean they want to go around killing dudes. They’re a tight-knit bunch. A lot of them are queer. They understand the importance of community.

If the government collapses and all laws come to an end, the people rampaging around killing and looting are gonna be like, frat boys and 4chan rejects. You can mistrust the bondage raiders all you like but they’re definitely the ones you’re going to run to for help when the neoliberal blood cultists and Nazi meme demons lay siege to your survivor enclave. There’s gonna be gayboy berserkers busting up slaver gangs and burning down warboy frat houses. The assless-chaps leather daddies and weird petplay people are gonna be the accidental peacekeepers of the post-apocalyptic world just because they’re the only motherfuckers who understand the importance of consent anymore.

Listen. Don’t come to me asking how to get the secret cadre of bisexual death commandoes to protect your wretched tent village if you’re scared that we might call in the kinksters for backup. I don’t give a shit if they dress up like dogs and spend all day writing poems about butt plugs. There’s assholes out there acting like Vlad the Impaler on a meth bender and you’re afraid of seeing a nipple. Fuck you. If you really want to get rid of the MRA death gangs you’re going to have to accept that a lesbian chainsaw dominatrix or two might be involved. It’s the fucking post-apocalypse my guy we gotta weigh our priorities here.

Skelefolk

The first three books of the series have a lot of sex in various combinations. They are explicitly and gleefully full of dicks, cocks, pussies, tits, and so many orgasms. Along with the sex and romance the books explore issues around women’s rights and sexual freedom – the male gaze vs the female gaze, power dynamics, bodily autonomy, and recovering from trauma. Surrounding the O’Kane gang’s frequent, loving orgies are varieties and permutations of patriarchy run amok. The city of Eden is Mike Pence’s sexless male dominated wet dream. The farms are a polygamist haven where girls have numbers rather than names. Sector Two trains prostitutes, other gangs abuse women, and men control reproduction. Amid all of this, the O’Kane women are fighting for a place where they have autonomy and equality.

Kit Rocha began publishing these books in 2012. Since then the subtext of the war on women has become overt text. it amazes me when people dismiss romance as an inconsequential genre filled with books for frustrated housewives. Romance is art, and like every other art form it is fundamentally political. Romance is a lens through which we can examine the human condition*, often by looking at how families are built, gender dynamics, what a happy ending looks like and who gets to have a happy ending. Kit Rocha is giving loving relationships and happy endings to, among others, thieves, outlaws, bisexuals, queers, sex workers, and abuse survivors. In doing so they are imagining that even if the whole world goes to shit and the patriarchy manifests in a more malevolent manner, there will still be women and men carving out a space for consent, autonomy, equality, love and happiness.

The Kit Rocha books are good escapist fun and you can read them just for that without losing anything. I don’t want to give the impression that I feel like I have to justify my reading choices. I feel like I’m living in a dystopia right now and the apocalypse is racing towards me. I am looking for worlds to escape into and I am looking for hope that everything I’m afraid of won’t come to pass and if it does, it won’t be the end of everything. I am happy to ponder the human condition while reading about people falling in love and enjoying a lot of orgasms.

*Fuck you Ian McEwan, science fiction has been considering ethical dilemmas since it was invented by a teenage girl over 100 years ago.

I have recently discovered a new series by an author I was previously unfamiliar with. It is set in a post-apocalyptic world that had hints of the Hunger Games set-up without the kids and tournament side of things. I purchased the bundle of the first three novels as a set on Amazon. This included: Beyond Shame, Beyond Control and Beyond Pain.

Kit Rocha presents us with a world set around a central 'city' that holds the power, grown from the ashes of the previous civilization. The wealthy and powerful live where they have running water, power, technology and a crazy amount of rules and regulations for their citizens. They use servant/slave labor to run things for them. Around the city are the slums/ghettos or numbered zones that are controlled by the powerful 'gangs' in each area. And outside of this, a long way away are farms that produce most of the food. Farms are harsh existences and not an idle place to live.

The Beyond Series is all about the gang that hold power in Section 4, the O'Kane gang. There are not a lot of rules except don't cross or endanger a member of the gang and don't try to encroach on their thriving liquor business. In Beyond Shame, a city Councilman's daughter breaks the two strikes you're out rule and is thrown outside the city walls. She is eventually rescued by one of the O'Kane gang and taken in until she can get on her feet. When it turns out that she has knowledge that can help the gang and one of the members becomes interested she must decide whether she'll return home when the opportunity arises or become a member of the O'Kane gang.

In Beyond Control the leader of the O'Kane gang must come to terms with the woman who is the unoffical 'Queen' of the O'Kane gang. Either he learns to face reality or she'll leave the O'Kane gang for good. And without her, it'll all fall apart.

In Beyond Pain a female rescued from the worst scenario must make amends with her new place in the world. Taken in by the O'Kane gang and learning to trust them is the hardest thing she's had to do, but now they also want her to go back into the bowels of Section 3 to face the life that brought her to her worst moment.

I have every intention of reading the next books in this series, so far there's a second bundle containing books 4-6, a short story bundle and books 7 & 8 are available individually with book 9 to come out this Fall.

One glaring issue

I really enjoyed these books. Not so much for the erotica, which gets to be too repetitive then winds you up and just stalls out on the follow through, which tends to be all emotion and in their heads instead of raw passion. Which is a shame because every scene starts very passionately. Of course, it was still overdone. I would say erotica overtook 3/4 of every story. That's too much, especially considering this author can actually write darn good drama and intrigue. That is by far my favorite parts of her stories. All the erotica scenes are bdsm and voyeurism. Even people who are innocent end up getting into group scenes or having tons of people watching them. It would be so much more sexy if each couple had their own preferences in the bedroom. While she might be trying to do that, every couple ends up morphing into every other one. Something exciting has been made boring by wearing it out.

My biggest complaint though is this author's lack of descriptions of the people. That drives me crazy. Makes it impossible to get a picture in my head, so I make one up, then 3/4 through a story she go especially us something, like they are black or have red hair and it completely throws off everything in my head. She is in desperate need of giving us a clear idea of what the characters terms look like. It's writing 101. You develop your characters to the point they are living and breathing on the page. We get none of that.

I almost gave 3 stars instead except the writing and storytelling is so good. So Kit, if you are reading this... give descriptions, pads back the erotica, follow it through more passionately and let our couples be individuals sexually.

Almost Too Much...

I purchased the three book bundle on my Kindle after reading the fourth book in the series. Don't read them out of order, you can follow the storyline, but it makes so much more sense to read them in the right sequence. These books were definitely filled with sex, too much at some points, in my opinion. If you happen to buy the bundle, just remember it is three full books. I think my mind was on overload by the time I finished them. I would have done better to have bought them each at separate times so I had a break between them all. I liked the thought of the storyline, however, it was never really fully explained...there were solar flares that nearly destroyed the world, there is now Eden and the Sectors, sometimes it feels they are living in a time of little technology, but other times they seem to have these amazing healing abilities with their regen labs and med-gel. It was all a little confusing at times. I did enjoy all of the characters and the way the books were written. I felt I knew them and cared how things turned out for them. I enjoyed the chapters thrown in that were dedicated to one character, knowing this would be a lead up to their story in an upcoming book. Overall, these books were well written and interesting, but definitely for mature audiences only. If you don't enjoy a lot of descriptive sex scenes, many times with multiple partners, stay away. If you enjoy it this type of book, you will probably like the Beyond series.

Raw, sexy and uncivilized.

I started reading the Beyond series as a Memorial Day Marathon and I have to say this Memorial Day was a HOT one.

What’s not to love? Hot sexy men, women who refuse to be a pretty accessories, raw uninhibited sex and a dystopian world that is shaping up to be amazingly well thought out. Each book gets better. The story gets deeper and the characters become more endearing. I am so addicted to the Beyond Series. Joining a gang never sounded so appealing.

These are long, intense, sexual books. These are not for the delicate reader. Only read if graphic hot sex (the dirtier the better) does not offend you.

This is my first time reading Kit Rocha and I am absolutely addicted. Could not put the first three books in the series down from the first page. It's certainly the hot, hot sex but it's also got amazing characters and a great story line that I felt was completely original. Was so excited that has a total of 7 main books in the series and additional Novellas to capture all of the characters. I cannot wait to get started on the next book. This is definitely the best books I have read this year! Amazing and highly recommended!

Loved it

I'm so glad I bought the box set. I want more. I like it when an author makes a series that includes all the characters and you can watch the relationships grow and bloom. The interaction Kit Rocha has developed is amazing. It's hard to include so many characters while giving them all dimension and depth. But Kit has done so. I love it and I'm ready for more.

Read this set and loved it. each story can be read as stand alone romance but is better to read in sequence.. once started couldn't put it down. read all three one after another. its rough and tough post apocalyptic stories with great sex scenes. its not meant for under 18 readers nor for the straight vanilla sex type people.

Great read!

I love this series so far. The dirty romance is the best. The plot also draws me in. It's hard to find series that have a good raunchy romance and a plot. These books have both and are an awesome find. Can't wait to read the next books.

Great bundle

Great story of life in future where rich live safely behind a wall and everyone else lives outside in the sectors. These stories revolve around people in sector 4, the O'Kane clan runs sector 4. Strong men and women, intrigue, danger, sex and family. No cliffhanger.

Where do I even start?

Imagine that you're blindfolded and dragged onto a helicopter only to be left in an unknown island full of people either naked or in very reveling clothes. They make you sit and watch while these people role play and do all sexual positions possible. Now they tell you to join in other wise you are useless and will be forced into some form of slavery where you will spend your days farming. You don't want to go to this farm so you not so hesitantly agree.

Well...now imagine that you're about to pick up and read this book...well you don't have to really imagine since my description is basically what happens without the blindfolding and helicopter.

I wouldn't have had a problem with this book if the author made more of an effort to explain what was going on with the main characters. The world building lacked a little too and the whole plot left me confused with more questions that I know will not be answered.

If you want to read a book with just sex in it and little to no story than you have picked up the right book but if you don't then I suggest you move on to another one.

One long,continuing story

This is a story of survival after the world goes dark. It is made up of a main City ruled with a hypocritical iron fist and 8 sectors outside of the city.Illegally keeping their " citizens" alive by a variety of means.Sector 4 is funded by bootlegging, primarily. Dallas and Lex are King and Queen of sector 4.The stories continue with other characters showing the problems, loves and survival of the various people in ( mostly) Sector 4.Dallas aquires Sector 3 ,which I think is expounded upon in book 4 which is in the next box set. There is alot of open sex in this series.Threesomes, partner sharing, same sex action. If you don't like alternate forms of sex,you won't like this.I think it is a steamy,character- driven post- apocalyptic saga that kept my interest the entire time.I have this entire series, all 9 books and short stories.I was in the mood to reread them all.I forgot how good they were.

Best I've read in a long time!

Okay, I read every day. Literally morning, noon and night (even when I'm supposed to be working if the book is good enough), and I could not stop reading this series.

The characters were so rich, so compelling that I was constantly changing which one was my favorite. I fell in love with Jasper, then Lex, Ace and Bren.

Six's story was probably my favorite, with her and Bren slow dancing around their feelings for each other, and their beliefs that they didn't deserve to be loved.

I loved the sheer female strength of Lex, but her vulnerability with Dallas, and his with her.

Noelle's emotional and sexual growth was fascinating to follow, and the love between her and Jas made me smile.

The sex scenes were hot as hell, the stories were mind-boggling and deep, and now I need to go buy the next set!!

These series land heavily on the erotic side of romance. The O'Kanes are very much into the work hard, play hard adage, with sex, tattoos, and cage matches figuring heavily into their lifestyle. No complaints from me on that end. I start to chafe at the dom bent to the men in Sector Four. I appreciated that it was heavily flavored with wanting to get their women off as much as possible. I think I wanted to see more equality between the men and women rather than the sort of equal but separate approach - e.g. only the men participated in planning sessions, only men enforced the security and safety of the Sector. There was something here that grated on me even though I was satisfied with each individual relationship if that makes sense.

Will likely read more, regardless.

This is everything I've ever wanted. The world is harsh and unforgiving but in this one corner, it's alive and knows no boundaries. The characters feel real, each one exploring themselves- and facing their pasts. Embracing the moment, the love, and the trust.

While it's written in a world of fantasy, many of the activities found are also in the realm of BDSM. From this perspective, it is well written. The kinky exploration and dynamics found within these pages are held to high standards. They include both real communication and consent.

I only read book one and I struggled to finish it.

2.5 stars.
I enjoyed ‘Deal with the devil’ so I decided to try other books by this author. Unfortunately I didn’t enjoy this one much at all. The world building wasn’t the best, the romance was confusing and the plot wasn’t very exciting. There was lots of sex with a few different people involved. The sex scenes didn’t appeal to me either. It wasn’t a bad book, just not my cup of tea.
