Blakesley Thorne moved to San Diego to escape a horrendous history in Los Angeles; a divorce, betrayal and murder were only part of it. A distant cousin of marshal Wyatt Earp, Blakesley intends to start a new life with her three very young daughters in the old homestead that has been in her family for generations. The home, one of the very first great homesteads to be built in early California, is full of legends of cursed gold and evil tidings.
Beck Seavington, Cmdr, USN, is a S.E.A.L. commander with a detachment from Coronado Naval Warfare Base. A handsome, lonely man fresh from a hellish divorce, he meets Blakesley in a life or death situation. Thrown together in what could have been a devastating circumstance, he is nonetheless smitten by the beautiful woman with the sea-colored eyes. Try as he might, he can't forget the spectacular young mother and he intends to pursue her.
Blakesley, too, is smitten with the gorgeous naval commander and becomes swept up in passion and attraction that neither one of them can control. Blakesley's walls of defense slowly come down with Beck's charm and gentleness, and her young daughters begin to learn what it is to trust again. As the pair fall desperately and hopelessly in love, Beck is determined to marry Blakesley even as his duties take him far away from her and right into the mouth of danger.
Tragedies threaten the pair and conflicts rise, but through it all, Beck and Blakesley's love is strong and unbreakable. When a final threat looms, it's up to Beck to save his wife in a showdown at the old Earp homestead where, once again, the Wild West reigns and ghosts from the history of old San Diego come full circle.

3 Stars! This book had such potential and the first 30% was a 5 star read. What could have been a great book, was filled with one too many melodramatic moments. Less would have been better. There was enough to go on just dealing with the love story between Beck and Blakesley, his job as a S.E.A.L commander, and the effect it had on him and his family.
The relationship between Beck and Blakesley heated up at warped speed, yet it felt right! The author wrote a tender, passionate, intimate scene, that had me squirming and misting. Then for the rest of the book, when it came to the loving, it just faded to black. Why she gave us that great scene early on and never gave us more is beyond me, she wrote it SO WELL!! There were some unbelievably emotional scenes in this book that drove the story, and many times had me in tears. She made Beck and the situations that he faced feel so real. Then in my opinion, ruined the book by adding some unbelievably crazy stuff that had me rolling my eyes. Too much time on this nonsense and then the ending felt rushed. Some of the time-lines didn't make sense, a few grammar issues needed to be addressed, but the book was free, so I'm going to look the other way where that is concerned. Had the focus remained on Beck and Blakesley trying to blend a family, their love for each other, and the hardships that military families face...this book would have been a winner.
I would love to see the author re-visit the writing of this book, edit out about 75 pages or so, and release the book again, although I know that won't happen. She has a way with words and knows how to play on the reader's emotions. There was some great dialogue and the military aspect of the book was well-thought out.
In any respect I thank Kathryn Le Veque for the free read and am intrigued enough by her writing that should this be a continuing series, I would consider reading another book.
I would have never picked this book out on my own, but I needed it for a challenge I'm participating in which is why I gave it a chance. I don't necessarily regret it. It wasn't as bad as I feared it'd be. There was a heavy case of insta-love that I really didn't believe in and was a bit too convenient for my taste, but what I did like about this was the family aspect it had. Blakesley has three daughters and I liked how she acted around them and the way she always thought of them. That is how a mother is supposed to act and I feel like that isn't portrayed enough in books. It was, obviously, mostly about the romance between Beck and Blakesley but they both got their own pasts and those were deeply explored. Getting to know these characters was fun, but I Beck called Blakesley 'baby' one too many times. It doesn't need to be said in every sentence. Thank you.
another SEAL book which i certainly enjoyed, however, the timeline was off several times--in one chapter kids are 5 and 8, a few chapters but only a few more weeks along, they are 6 and 9. i shouldn't quibble too much since it was free, though!
This book has just been added to my all time favorites list, and Ms. Le Veque has become a new favorite author.
Beck Seavington, an officer and a gentleman, in every sense, is a character whom you will instantly fall in love with and wish that you could throw yourself into a riptide for the chance to be rescued by a handsome SEAL.
Blakesly Thorne is a young mother of three trying to put a nasty, sordid divorce behind her when Beck literally comes to her rescue, and the rest is, as they say, history.
The story is full of sweet moments and heartache as the pair navigate falling in love while dealing with Beck's profession as a Navy SEAL. There is not a lot of action, but has enough sub-plots to carry the main story seamlessly to the end without boring the reader or seeming contrived.
Intimate moments are captured perfectly without a high level of eroticism, which aligns with the tone of the story. However, that is not to say that it is all saccharine sweet either, just enough to steam up the mirrors.
There were a few editing issues, but not enough to distract the reader. Not certain if it is the author or e-book publishing.
I loved this book so much that I bought all the other books available in the author's American Heroes Series. I look forward to reading them and whatever else I can get my hands on from her.
It was a real pleasure & privilege to be able to read this story.Yes there were typos, yes there were creative licensing yet there was so much realism & creative of words to spin a good story. It's just made a great story, about a single American Hero character out of an elite unit of the S.E.A.L.S. It's told in a was to get you see how hard it is to be in the unit & have a family & the pressures that come to the person you love I this case Blakesley & Beck. I cried hard in some places & smiled wide in others. Just an really good love story that include a family but Beck is the type a man I want for my daughter.
I loved it - had to stop reading a a few times as I didn't want to read what happened next - glad I did as. Had me in floods of tears - even when I was reading this at the kids swimming lessons - had some weird looks!
At first I was rolling my eyes... the book seemed to have unrealistic "games" that the two new lovers were playing. I really liked the book once the two got married. There was a lot of drama. Again, the ending was good... it was a fun read!
Good story, I got this book on my phones kindle. I was surprised that story was fast paced and moved very fast. A good story, a few mistakes but that was not the writers fault.
Beck Seavington, dedicated S.E.A.L Commander has never bothered with women since his divorce four years ago, but after saving a little girl from drowning, he becomes smitten when he meets her mother. Blakesley Thorne in running from her past, beautiful, intelligent and talented, she becomes completely captivated when she meets the huge, sexy, handsome Commander. Not only does Beck fall for the stunning woman but he is soon captivated by her adorable and cheeky daughters. But life is rarely a smooth path... Not only does this wonderful story twist and turn in unexpected ways, but Kat Le Veque vividly brings to life the personalities of Blakesley's adorable daughters which adds great humour to this really emotional love story. This story just gets better and better the more chapters you read, one minute you're smiling, the next you have tears in your eyes as this wonderful love story unfolds. I absolutely adored this book from beginning to end and you will too.
This offering from a new to me author is the tale of SEAL Beck Seavington and single mother Blakesley Thorne. When Beck rescues and returns Blakesley’s eight-year-old daughter from the ocean, they both knew there was something special, But the baggage of their painful divorces left plenty of debris in its wake stalls their happiness.
There is plenty of activity in this outing but there isn’t one overall issue in the outing to hold up into the review because this couple has as close to a ‘real life’ as possible with dating, parenting, couple and work issues. While the book and pacing are done well, to this reader’s taste, there are just too may pages. Rating: 4stars
This was so good. The beginning sets the series up. Beck and his friends from college had been close. As they went about their adult lives they kept in touch with each other but they were spread all over. This is Beck 's story. But he needs a heroine and his is Blakesly. Yes her name is unusual but you will find out how she got it.
How they met was interesting. The rest of the story is so good. You will meet her daughters the men he works with and their parents. Good people.
I found the ending of the story better than most. Everything gets wrapped up and the the epilogue fills you in on the remainder of her story.
Kat LeVeque has written The Sunset Hour the first book in The Eagle Brotherhood series. I found out about LeVeque writing this contemporary book two days ago. I had no idea! I read/listen to her other works. and these live up to her other writing. Blakely has three daughters & meets Beck, A navy S.E.A.L. while at the beach with her children. They immediately like each other but their story has some twists & turns before the HEA! I'm FC going to read more of her using this pseudonym.
I really wanted to love this book. It seems like a great background...hot Navy Seal meets women with kids and lots of action. I really just didn't like the main characters. They were both needy and cried a lot, especially Blakesly. Just not how I expected Beck, a Navy Seal to be. Unfortunately, even the hot scenes weren't even that...just kind of glossed over. This is the first book I have read by this author. I probably won't read another. There are many more books on this genre that are better written.
I read a lot, but this is the best book I have ever read. It has every in this book. LovTe, children, drama, Navy Seals... Every emotion you have will come out if you read this book. I laughed, I cryed, I was excited and sad. By the time I finished this book I was emotionally drained. Excellent writing. Excellent Author. Thank you so much for writing these books.
Starts with a blerb of a few guys early 20s bonding over something that's better left unsaid (you'll read about it and make up your own view) next we meet a woman with her own problems and baggage (ex in jail for murder) and one of said guys from earlier is entered into her life !And you're still in the first quarter of the story the family togetherness is very warming!
I love that the author used true American heroes, S.E.A.L.s, as a main character in this series of books. The stories come together well, are well-written by the author, and are believable in their context. I did find 3 editing issues, but that's not bad, as I usually find more. Kat, great job!!
but not quite amazing. There were hints of drama and maybe some intrigue that never became dramatic or intriguing. I’m glad that I stuck with the book to the end, but I’m not sure if I’ll continue with the series. I was also distracted by some editing errors. Peace when it should have been piece, and his instead of is, for example.
Definitely not up to the quality of the author's historical romances. Wooden characters, trite dialogue, corny plot with too many contrivances. Who would offer 30 million as a ransom with no negotiation? I only finished the book because I kept hoping it would get better. By the end I really didn't care what happened to anybody in the book.
This book was one of the best books I have read in a long time and would recommend any and everyone who loves a love story, mystery, and a historical book to read this one and not only that its very hard to put down until your done reading it.
A navy seal and the ex wife of a murder, find love, blend two families, solve a mystery tied to Wyatt Earp, overcome the pain and loneliness of deployment, finally live a happy life. Action, mystery, suspense and romance make this a worthwhile read.
I loved it. I wasn't sure since I'm addicted to your medieval books. This was full of fun, mystery, love and everything Le Veque. I can't wait to read the next one.
I really loved this book I usually find myself in a castle in the 1200. However Miss Kathryn is as adept in this century as she is in the middle ages. She has truly found her calling.
