A Moon's Glow #1

Riley's Secret

Rate this book
Megan Banks feels like an imposter in her own life; she doesn’t belong with her friends or with her parents, who ignore her. After a fire she’s indirectly involved with, she finds herself with two hundred hours of community service. It’s the charity she volunteers at that finally makes her feel like she belongs. These people, with whom she has nothing in common, mean more to her than her rich, selfish friends.

But for some reason her supervisor, Nate Green, doesn’t want her there. He thinks she’s a self-centered rich girl who deserves to be in jail. After she’s threatened by the kids who started the fire, Nate and Megan form a strange friendship, built only for her protection. But the more she feels for him, the more he pushes her away.

As they become closer, Megan knows Nate is attracted to her as well, but she also believes that he is hiding something. But she could never guess what he really is. Before she realizes what is happening, she becomes involved in a world she didn't know existed.

In this strange new reality, can she finally find a place where she belongs?

I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Riley's Secret by Christina Smith is about a teenager, Megan, who seems to have everything-- her family is rich, she is part of the popular group at school, and she has all the clothes and material things that she could ever want. Problem is, she just wants a real family and a sense of real purpose-- neither of which she has. She has a huge crush on Nate, a hot guy at school who wants nothing to do with her, but when her popular group of friends burns down a house, she has to make a decision-- to do what's right, or to once again go along with her friends. Her decision and her connection with Nate, who has more than a few secrets of his own, change the course of her life forever.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters are great, and Megan, in particular, is a very likeable protagonist. She was your "poor little rich girl," but quickly sets everyone's view of her straight-- she is a good person at heart and brave enough to do the right thing even if it's not the popular one. Nate is less likeable, but he has a reason for being gruff. The plot has some great twists, and a paranormal aspect, which makes it very entertaining to read.

A couple of issues I had with this book have to do with Megan's reaction to Nate's secrets. I just couldn't understand why she wasn't bothered by certain things, and why she was SO bothered by other things, which I thought to be less important. Also, some of the plot twists seemed almost too convenient.

Overall, a wonderful and entertaining first novel in a trilogy. I will definitely be picking up the next installment!

Lovers of teen young adult fiction will totally gobble up Riley's Secret...
description
With its blossoming of young  love, a cloak of darkness & mystery,  a drop dead gorgeous honey & a hint of teenage drama... It really is a perfect YA novel.

I have to admit i didn't like megan to start with, it's not so much I hated her it's just after reading Riley's Curse I had some pretty hight expectations of the girl who would be good enough for such an amazing, gorgeous & caring guy.

once I got into the story a bit more, I started to quite like her, she was sweet, strong, responsible and caring.

But Then.. i started to dislike Nate, his character just seemed so different from the riley's curse the prequel, stalking a girl you like...Is creepy.
then breaking in to said girl's friends house to jump in bed with her while she's asleep is extremely creepy! seriously....
description
... Where'd the hot caring & not creepy guy go!

But seeing as it was written from a different POV I let it slip & a couple of chapters later I found myself falling back in love with him.

description

Christina has done a lovely job at writing Riley's Curse. There were moments of utter giggling, moments where I was close to tears at the sheer tenderness shown between the characters & moments of disbelief because of the cold & emptiness shown in other characters. It was a real mixes bag.

But like with any novel it wasn't all smooth sailing, there were moments were I couldn't help but roll my eyes at how clique it was, through out the start I felt like I was reading some boring sleep over club novel filled with high school politics & pillow fights, which thankfully slowly morphed into a wonderful ya paranormal romance novel I was more then happy to read.

Would I re-read it? Probably not.
Would I recommend it? If your into teen/young adult fiction...oh yes.
Would I read more in the series?yes, probably to find out if they actually ever have sex! I have a dirty mind & I know it!...lol

This book rocked. After reading the prequel, Riley’s Curse, I was pretty much salivating for more and Riley’s Secret did not disappoint.

In this segment of A Moon’s Glow Series, Megan Banks is forced to do community service at Riley House, a place that helps those in need get back on their feet. When she has a run-in with her supervisor, Nate Green, she doesn’t understand why he hates her. But, soon it becomes all too clear that he doesn’t actually hate her, but he’s hiding something, and she is determined to find out what that something is. Will she be able to survive the truth? You’ll have to read this awesome book to find out.

Smith gives us a new side of Nate as he struggles to keep Megan at an arm’s length. He starts out as a bit of a dumbass, which actually helps to turn his character from a blossom to a full and lushes bloom. I found myself cursing him, loving him, and probably most importantly, feeling compassion for him. He makes some stupid choices, and this makes him all the more real and easy to relate to. Let’s face it, real life is full of stupid and sometimes mindless choices.

Smith took the simple idea of “wolves mating for life” and added a supernatural twist. I have to admit, I’m a sucker for soulmates. There is something so magical about the idea of having one and only one “mate”. What I loved about this book is that it showed how powerful true love can be. You can try to run, hope to hide, but when you find that person, even if being with them could mean certain death for both of you, you just can’t fight it. It’s inevitable; you cannot hide for your perfect mate.

The writing flowed smoothly; the characters were fantastic, and the plot was gripping. Smith never let the life of her characters get too comfortable, which in turn gives us, the reader, a book packed full of page turning suspense.

I highly recommend Riley’s Secret by Christina Smith and definitely will be counting the days for the next part of Megan and Nate’s story.

Awsome book Firstly i would like to Thank the Awsome Christina Smith for giving me the honour of reading and reviewing this book. I read it straight after i read Reily's curse, so it was great to find out what happened next.

Once again Christina has captured me with her writing. She made me want more and more.

I loved the relationship between Megan and Nate because at the start it was like he disliked her with a passion and did every thing to try to avoid her then suddenly he was there all the time, and the relationship develops and the more time they spend together the more Megan relises he is hiding something. I loved the concept of wolves mating for life, that once you find your soul mate that is it there is no other for you and nothing or no one can keep you apart, no matter what secrets you have if they are your soul mate they will overcome everything to be together. I loved all the characters even though at times i wanted to hit Nate for the choices he made, but i still loved him. I also loved the fact that Megan being bought up with alot of money had anything she wanted (except the perfect home life) and she embraced working at Reily's house where people go if they need food, shelter and even help finding work. I loved it that on one of the first days she was there she decided to go home and raid her and her parents wardrobes without permission and give brand new clothes to people who needed it. I loved her for that.

I love anything Christina writes and this was just another example of her amazing writing. I cannot wait to see what happens next. I recommend all of Christina's books.

I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This was the Book of the Month in my goodreads group Reading For Fun. I just finished reading the prequel Riley's Curse and I loved it. I was excited to start this book because I was so drawn into the prequel. I also love the cover. I like do his story as well I was just missing the old world charm that the novella had. I did like that this book read fairly quickly and there was enough action and romance to keep me interested.
I still really enjoyed these characters and I'm glad that Nate finally told Megan the truth. Also I'm glad that Megan made new friends, unfortunately her parents are assholes and you can't pick your family. I really want to learn me about Joe and Lauren and most importantly Mona. I want her story. Is she who she says she is??
Overall this was a great start to the series and I'm very excited to read the rest of the books. I really enjoyed Christina Smith's writing and I will be checking out her other series as well. This is another book I would recommend to werewolf lovers.

Okay, first off, this was a charming story. I just love the leading man, Nate. He has such a sweet spirit. We really don't see many heroes like this these days. I just love him. The leading lady, Megan was a charming character as well. The story was well written and the plot was intriguing. A book I will recommend for sure. Once again, great job Christina Smith!

So this book was very good. I enjoyed the writing (and while there were a few errors, it was not enough for me to be dragged from the story to look for the next one). I enjoyed the romance of this story.

I loved the characters, even the supporting ones. Read Riley's Curse, the prequel, prior to this one however, as there are some developments in this one and the 2nd book in the series that stem from that one.

The story was very well written, in my opinion, and the plot was enjoyable. I read it over the day on Saturday, and was very impressed with it.

To warn those that this might bother (normally I might have been bothered too, but I actually really enjoyed it surprisingly, so maybe still give it a shot if this stuff generally bothers you too, as it really did surprise me with how much I liked it, I had actually only read the synopsis of the prequel, and Amazon was offering it for free, so I bought it and loved it, and then bought the rest because it was so good, so don't get scared away by the following list, just be cautious as everyone has different tastes and while I was able to ignore my usual distaste for these, you might not):

-there is a slight feel of Twilight in this novel (only in the respect to the fact that Nate is very protective of Megan and warns her away several times, although in my view, he was more entitled to this view than Edward, as there are things in his past that keeps him from being overly close with his own family and having to give the impression that he is not related to them to keep him safe, hence he warns her away a lot) (I also am not one of those Twilight haters, I enjoyed the books so I don't mind if they remind me of Twilight, I just don't like it when they are overly Twilighty, meaning they take most of the plot and just do some twists to make it theirs, as I said the only thing that actually reminded me of Twilight was the protectiveness of Nate)

-absentee parents (from what I understand, a lot of people don't like this, and while I agree with them, I also find that maybe parents need to read books like this, or even people considering being parents, because I feel like there are a lot of people out there who are absentee parents, only paying attention to their kids when they are making trouble. And then in those cases, the parents blame everyone but the child and themselves and buy the kid something to make it better. Pathetic parenting in my opinion. While Megan isn't a troublemaker, her parents are pretty much absent from her lives, only coming every once and a while, mainly when there is a crowd of people around so that they can look like they actually care about her. But she did have her nanny/cook and the groundskeeper who were married that raised her and taught her to be a good person, so she didn't turn out like most children would from the bad parenting. It also seemed that her parents might have been a bit more involved in her life back when she was younger prior to her mom getting her inheritance and that they changed when they got money, which is also something that happens when people suddenly come into money, and I liked, personally, how Christina showed this change in attitude with her parents turning into snobs.)

-what I think of as insta-attraction, but others might think of as instalove (the "instalove" that they may claim happened took place 3 years before the start of this novel. It was more of an "intsa-attraction", since neither one actually mentioned feeling anything other than attraction at that point, and they don't do anything about it, as I mentioned, for THREE years, which in my view is much more acceptable, as people can be instantly attracted to someone, that just doesn't mean that they are in love with said person. By the time that these two (Nate and Megan) actually start talking and spending time together, it actually takes at least half of the book for them to be pleasant to each other, and then even longer for them to actually start to date or even to admit to feelings (although she might have admitted to feelings to herself a little earlier in the book, but didn't actually do anything about it). And like I said, this was three years after they actually met and became attracted. So in my opinion, this book was a perfect amount of romance, it doesn't take place immediately and takes a while to build up.)

If you can handle these things, and like I said, each of them seemed so minimal to the story to me (particularly the Twilight one, since there was only one aspect that that it seemed to copy, it didn't bother me), I would certainly recommend it. But only once you have read the prequel, as there are at least six characters that are introduced in that novel that are in this one and has events that influence this novel and the way in which Nate interacts with others. Just makes it more understandable.

First I want to thank the author, Christina Smith, for providing me with an ecopy of this book for an honest review. I don't know if I would have read the book otherwise just because of the subject of werewolves. See, I'm not a fan of werewolf books. I'm pretty open to all other paranormal beings, ok, vampires are not a fav either, but for some reason, I just can't get into werewolves.

I was given the ebook, and of course, I read the prequel first, Riley's Curse, which I absolutely loved. Right after finishing, I jumped into this book. I was really hoping to continue on the bar set by that book. Unfortunately, it just didn't happen for me. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Riley's Secret, but the story just wasn't at the same level. Actually, I really wouldn't call this book much of a werewolf book, but if I go more into that I'd be giving away some spoilers, and I hate spoilers!

On to the story. Rich girl hangs with the rich crowd, but really doesn't like them. A harmless prank shows her what her friends are really like. She goes into community service, finds she likes it, and finds herself falling for the untouchable boy from school. Attractive, but unsociable at school, he has a way with things at the home he works at. Yes, this is Riley, and yes, he's a werewolf, but she doesn't know it. This is one area the story seems to drag on. Okay, as we know, they do fall for each other, than shortly thereafter all hell breaks loose. Now, this is where the story takes off, unfortunately, this is also about 80% into the book.

Now, would I recommend this book? Yes. To whom? Anyone who likes paranormal romance. Would I read the next book? Yes. I feel that this story can go far, and there are story lines that I want to know more about. I feel that the reader has all the backstory they could possibly need on the main characters that the story can only get fresher, faster, and crazier.

While I very much enjoyed reading Riley’s Curse, the prequel to this novel, I absolutely loved reading Riley’s Secret. Smith stepped it up a notch in all departments while writing this captivating story. She continues her vivid descriptions and fast paced action in this story. The writing also flows so well that at times you forget that you are reading the words on a page.

I love the character development in this novel. The development of the male protagonist continues from what is found in the prequel, making him a much more rounded and attractive character. The female protagonist is constantly fighting against the expected actions and demeanor for her station in society. You get to watch her learn to care for others and to teach herself basic skills such as cooking. It leads to many heartwarming and comical scenes. Also, even though this story is at its core a romance, I thoroughly enjoy the fact that there are no love triangles. It has been quite a long time since I’ve read a romance without at least the hint of one. The romance is also kept hidden from most other characters, giving it a thrilling, forbidden aspect. The concept of a mate is also taken to the forefront in this story, with a slightly different twist than what is seen in other werewolf stories. By the end I wanted to go and find a werewolf mate of my own.

There is also a moral story as the backdrop to this novel. Both of the main characters need to forgive themselves for certain past actions, albeit for very different things. They have the forgiveness of those around them and of each other, but are unable to forgive themselves. They learn (and we are left thinking about the fact that) the hardest thing to do is to forgive yourself.

I must say that every time that I read one of this author’s works I am more impressed than the last time. I definitely can’t wait to see what Smith writes next!

Though she is part of the popular, rich crowd, it's obvious from the start that Megan isn't like the rest of them, so when she goes against them to save a family from a burning building she then winds up in trouble even though it's not her fault.

This leads her to community service at Riley house, where she properly meets long-term crush Nate. The story continues to develop their relationship until the bad guy turns up and secrets are revealed. Will Megan be able to handle it...read the story to find out.

I personally love this book and am reviewing it after my second time reading it. I think Megan is easy to relate to and despite Nate's initial impression I have certainly grown to love him. I've always loved the idea of soulmates which is why I tend to fall hardest for books with werewolves or other supernatural bonds but I think the nicest thing about this was that it was subtle. They weren't immediately making out and though we later find out the attraction was immediate for them, it's sweet that it has taken time to develop.

I also like how Nate is humble. He hates himself for being a monster (which I don't agree with but hey ho) which is different from a few other werewolf books I've read where the guy thinks he walks on water. The book holds a good pace, ensuring that there's never a boring moment.

I awarded 4* rating because even though I would happily read it ten times over, I do think the book is predictable in areas. This is one of those books that I can pick up knowing its a good, easy read but it doesn't pull at my heart strings or make my heart leap out of my chest as much as others do.

FUN, ENJOYABLE READ!
This is a sweet romance between two eighteen-year-olds looking for a place to belong. Megan’s parents are cold and emotionally unavailable, and Nate is hiding a secret. To be honest, I’ve avoided werewolf novels the past couple of years because I had reached my saturation point, but this book came highly recommended and I’m glad I read it. The two main protagonists are very likable and the story moves along mostly at a brisk pace. Some of Megan’s actions left me baffled, but hey she’s a teenager, and I still felt compelled to keep turning those cyber-pages to see what happened next! All in all a very enjoyable book! I recommend it to YA Paranormal lovers. I’ll definitely read the second installment, Riley’s Torment.

Riley's Secret is the first of this 2 book series. The author also wrote a prequel to this series which I have not read yet.

I have read many self published books and to date, this is one of the best written with only one or two minor mistakes.

This young adult series is well written, fast moving and made me want to stay up all night reading it. After devouring book 1 I quickly started on the second.

If you are a fan of Maggie Stiefvater author of The Wolves of Mercy Falls (Shiver - Linger - Forever) then this is the series for you.

I read this book on a 9 hour flight. This book is amazing i bought a bunch of copies to give to my friends. I can't wait to read the next book. I loved the writing style because it made me want to punch a bunch of characters. The main character I end up disliking. I only gave this book 4 out of 5 stars because the last like 10 chapters just seemed to drag on and on plus there were a lot of repetitive stuff that happened. Over all this book was amazing and i will be rereading it a lot i will also be reading more books by this author

Fan-flipping-tastic! Wow what a great second part of the story. Loved the introduction of another wolf mate. I'm going to stop reading the series now and wait for book 4 before reading book 3. I hate when I have to re-read part of a story to refresh my memory. This was a perfect place to stop.

Okay read

Told from Megans POV who is a popular rich kid. The storyline is okay not much to it only a romantic one. Megan goes to school with Nate who unbeknown to her is a werewolf. He doesnt really want anything to do with her or anyone else and is rude to her but he is hiding his true feelings. She finds herself in trouble with the popular kids and is sent to do community service where Nate works. However the Police are onto the other kids who Megan has refused to name. Megan withdraws from the group but is constantly being bullied by them. Nate steps in to protect her but when his friend wants to set her up on a date with someone else he becomes jealous and changes his mind about being with her. From there the story starts and its when Nates past comes back to haunt him and Megan, his true mate. Recommended read no sexual content.

Stayed up all night reading it

I couldn't put it down. I've never been ignored by my parents my peers did that for me but Ms. Smith's words resonated in my soul. I cried and laughed with the character's in this book. I got lost in another world of werewolves and secrets and mates. I almost missed a test luckily we are all still in lockdown due to Covid-19 so everything is online. I fell in love with these characters and felt like a participant not an observer it really is an incredible read and something to read when you feel isolated or ignored because somehow I belonged at some point in the story. I can't say how wonderful this book was and cannot reccomend it enough. On top of everything else she still kept the book pg.

Very good

This has all the elements of a good werewolf story--and it's clean. It has a HFN ending and the plot goes quickly. The characters are easy to identify with and like. Great story.

So I was lucky enough to receive this beautiful book in a giveaway here on Goodreads!

I'd probably give this book a 3.5 rating.

I was very excited to receive Riley's Secret, and absolutely distraught that I never seemed to have time to read it (or anything else)! But I finally found time to read it, and ended up reading it very quickly once I got into it. I feel horrible, though, that this review has taken so long, considering how long ago I got the book. So sorry!

Anyway, while I highly doubt this is a spoiler for anyone who has read the description and/or looked at the cover, I'll go ahead and warn that this may be a *spoiler*: This book is about werewolves, and I am an absolute sucker for a werewolf story of any kind. I'm not sure what it is, but if I find a book about werewolves, I. Must. Have. It.

So because of that, I started reading this already liking it, and when I met the main character, Megan Banks, I loved it. I really liked her personality, and since I haven't read many books about rich characters, this was a nice, new twist. I also really liked some of the other characters: Nate, Mona, Lauren, Joseph, etc. (particularly Mona and Joseph). And, for me, if I can get attached to the characters, I'm bound to like the book overall (well, so long as it has at least a decent plot).

And the plot for this book is good. It isn't the most original or complex, but it was interesting and held my attention. I really loved some particular scenes as well. The scene at the grocery store and the one at the amusement park were two of my favorites. Don't ask me why because I probably couldn't tell you.

The writing style wasn't my favorite. It seemed a little too simple for me. However this might be because for the past couple months I've been having to read Shakespeare and such, so my brain might not be able to handle English at the moment (haha). I just felt like the sentences could have been more varied and a wider range of adjectives could have been used. That being said, this is my only "major" complaint about this book. Overall I liked it quite a lot.

I will definitely be ordering the next book, Riley's Torment, soon. As soon as I get through some of the hundreds of to-read books I already own...

Once again, I'm so sorry this review took so long!

Oooh! I also noticed that the author is from Canada which is cool to me because I've never been there and would love to go. I'm addicted to traveling and want to visit everywhere!

Also, I saw under About the Author that she has ideas for future books! Well, Mrs. Smith, keep them coming! :D

*Gifted from the author in exchange for an honest review*
This was the book of the month for one of my groups and since the prequel was I picked it up and read it first. I fell in love with Nate in the prequel and I was very excited to see his story continue in this book. As many people may know I am a huge werewolf fan and this one joins my list of favorites, not only because the werewolf parts held what I believe are essentials in such a novel but also so much more, like complicated romance, the threat of danger, and of course Riley House just to name a few.
I loved Nate just as much if not more while reading this one and I believe Megan said it best when she said:
"The more I got to know him the more I realized he was sweet caring, protective---and also sometimes very strange."
I did have moments of frustration with Nate and if you read it I like you may know what I mean, but he quickly redeemed himself and became the loving Nate I fell in love with.
I did not really like Meg at first but she quickly grew on me, she was smart and when she found he place at Riley house I knew she would be great with Nate. I was very glad to see her cut her dead weight and get some new friends. I believe Mona was a big reason that Megan was not a snob, I loved her so much and I really want to try her doughnuts!
I really loved the sweet yet action packed ending and I am ready to get my hands on the rest of the series and join this group on their journey once again. I am very curious about Lauren and Joe I hope I learn more soon. If you like werewolves and romance then this book is for you, I absolutely loved it.
Also I must say this cover is beautiful I LOVE it!!!

Not as good as I'd hoped. The characters were the 'I'll spill my soul to you but we only just met' type that answered a million questions in one sentence. And I felt the first half of the book where Megan dealt with her old friends while interesting could have just been a different book all together. Other then giving Nate a reason to talk to her at school it was all pointless filler.

I liked joe; he was a breath of fresh air and the fact the Megan struggled with nate's werewolf side instead of just being okay with it like I expected.

I wish there was more to do with Megan's parents and old friends because after a while I got sick of her whining about them because they really weren't apart of the story.

I really liked the end chapter where Megan's waiting for Nate i kind of wish the whole book was written in that style. It was also great how nate's family has been involved throughout the decades in protecting nate and keeping his secret. it was an interesting take on an old plot line and helped me not cringe at the age factor so much.

A lot of things to like about this book but no real love.

I'm not a huge fan of romance, but when it is a paranormal story in which romance plays a part in the plot, rather than a series of sexual encounters loosely connected by dialogue, then it can be a fun read. This book falls into that category. The subject matter is not especially new but the author uses the mythology in a way that makes sense, and puts her own individual slant on how the characters develop. My only real criticism [spoiler] was the ease in which the heroine moved from one part of her life to another; it was too glib, too sudden, and struck an incongruous note in what was otherwise a well-crafted plot.

I finished this a while ago and forgot to review it. However it was good but personally I feel like it needed more action. It did have a fair bit but not enough to keep me satisfied to be honest. She was in immediate danger at all times which caused the quick form relationship which moved fast. Too fast for me. Although whenever this danger occurs he always saves her before anything can really happen. I think in the next book I choose I will look for the main character to be a supernatural being, maybe if she was a werewolf I would've enjoyed it more? I don't know but all in all it was okay, a reasonably enjoyable read.
