Zuri Day is a hopeful romantic. She believes in happy endings, half-full glasses and dreams coming true. That's why she's thrilled to be a contributing writer to this genre...one of her favorites!
Zuri doesn't remember exactly how old she was when she picked up her first romance novel, but she does remember it was love at first sight. "It was probably a Harlequin," she recalled during a recent interview. "And it thankfully took me away from a fairly dull and routine existence growing up in a small Kansas town."
Things aren't dull and routine anymore. Zuri now resides in Los Angeles with her family and when she isn't writing loves to travel the world, cook vegetarian food, work out, watch sports, attend concerts and theatre and enjoy the simple things in life.
"Many people have given up on love, much less romance," Zuri says. "I'm hoping that somehow, through the love-filled pages of my romance novels, I can ignite the reader's desire to believe again. Because everything is possible, when we believe..."
sometimes i read books i know i should’ve dnf’d out of pure nosiness. this is one of those books. i kinda enjoyed it but like i kinda didn’t.
shayna + michael’s love story was cute. the romance isn’t my issue. it’s the side characters. shayna’s ex beat her up so bad she had bruised ribs and the only person who had a problem with it was michael.
her mama basically set her up and then kept pushing the ex back into shayna’s life. her mama was really a hot ass mess that didn’t deserve to take up as much space in this book as she did. theeeeeen the author had the nerve to give both the mama and the ex a happy ending ?! please go to a place that’s hot and stay there.

A new author to me, I loved the approach to sports romance with the female athlete. She's an Olympic and collegiate track and field star, and despite her individual success, her favorite event is a relay with her friends. Love that.
The Morgan family certainly seems interesting enough to return to this series.
I saw Love on the Run mentioned at the #RomBkLove hashtag on Twitter and it piqued my interest. When I saw that I already had it in my TBR along with a couple of other books from Zuri Day, I immediately decided that it would be my pick for contemporary romance month at the TBR Challenge. I don’t read tons of sports romances, but if an author I like has written one, I’m definitely there for it. Such was the case here, and I enjoyed my glimpse into the life of a track star on the rise.
Fresh off an Olympic win, runner Shayna Washington finds herself at the center of increased attention. When superstar athletic manager Michael Morgan reaches out to her, Shayna responds and what starts as a business deal between a manager and an athlete quickly turns to more than just professional courtesy.
The first part of the story set-up was honestly the hardest for me. Michael is a player, to put it mildly. By player, I mean that he gets multiple calls from multiple women looking to hook up just about daily, it seems like. He even has more than one phone that these women are calling! If this were a Regency, he’d be the Duke of Slut. Knowing this, I have to admit that while I kind of liked the lead characters, I knew I would want to see a lot of growth from Michael before I could believe that he would be hero material.
I warmed up to Shayna a lot faster. She takes her running – and her career – seriously. In that sense, she seemed pretty mature for her stated age of 25. However, throughout the book we get to see Shayna with her friends and roommates and those interactions were both fun and felt like conversations actual people in their 20s would be having. I can see where very conservative readers may not find this book to their taste, but I enjoyed the lighthearted raunchiness of some of the banter here. The book has a solid emotional heart to it, but there’s also quite a bit of good-natured fun to the story.
Loved this story!! Micheal and Shayna's story was simply wonderful. I was so happy how things turned out in Shayna's life in the end but she drove me nuts a few times when she could not see what was going on right in front of her face. Zuri Day did an awesome job and I hope we get Gregory and Troy a story next!
I really enjoyed listening to Love on the Run by Zuri Day. HOWEVER, the main character Shay is really getting on my nerves!!!! Really mom!?? How simple and easily manipulated is she?!? Ugh!!!!! I do like the Morgan Men and Jackie Morgan. Can’t wait to read more of the series.

I would've given it 4 stars but I did not like the way she kept running back to her mother. You see your mother doesn't have your best interest at heart, cut her off.
It was okay. There was a lot of build up and tension between the main character and her ex, only to get to the end and have no climax whatsoever. Still, I enjoyed the book.
Now that I'm back in public libraries, I'm looking to try some books outside my usual favorite genres. Some of the areas I was curious about were romance, sports, and novels published by "urban fiction" imprints. I was very satisfied to find Love on the Run on PW's list of the best romance books of 2012, because it's a romance, published by Dafina, featuring a star sprinter named Shayna who falls in love with her ambitious manager, Michael. Their romance is kindled as her career as a celebrity endorser takes off, but Shayna's ex-boyfriend Jarrell refuses to move on in ways that are sometimes irritating, sometimes creepy.
Like other romances I've encountered, this book features a lot of scenery that's aspirational: private jets and chefs; lavish dinners; and a honeymoon yacht (that no one seems to be sailing, so good luck with that). Not only is Michael rich and powerful, he also comes from a family of winners, with a successful doctor for a brother, a devoted mother, and a father who was an involved role model up until his death. Shayna, by contrast, was raised largely by her grandmother, while her flighty mother pursued various romances of her own.
Indeed the exploration of Shayna's family is the part of this book that feels least templated. I liked the portrayal of Shayna's grandmother, and the revelations about their family were surprising, although this plotline seemed to get somewhat short shrift in order to get back to talking about crab cakes and shoes and limousines. Shayna's mother, Beverley, is simply not much of a mother--not only does she not guide or encourage her daughter, she also behaves selfishly towards her. As the book opens, Beverley has married Shayna's ex-boyfriend Jarrell's older brother Larsen. This is somewhat embarrassing to Shayna, and it means that Shayna can't get away from (step-uncle?) Jarrell when they break up. Even after Jarrell (somewhat ambiguously) physically hurts Shayna, Beverley helps him in his machinations to get her back.
I was troubled by Jarrell, whom I found more villainous than the author seems to have intended. In the end, he leaves Shayna alone because he has a new partner. But why not leave Shayna alone because she told him to and it's her life? Neither Jarrell nor Beverley has a moment of actually respecting Shayna as the ultimate arbiter of her own body, future, and happiness, so I felt that this was unresolved, even if the author treats it as settled when Shayna and Michael marry.
As this is a contemporary romance book, it had a handful of steamy sex scenes, none of which were bad, though some of the synonyms used are pretty silly. In fact, silly is the word I'd choose to describe the sex scenes in general, which feel unconnected with the larger plot. Instead, they are connected with the characters' world of luxury. For example, when Shayna first visits Michael's well-appointed home, we hear about her "pulsating punnanny"--and she's just sitting on the sofa! (Memo to self: new sofa?) Their attraction seems to stem, not from some sense of love and understanding, but from their sheer physical attractiveness and being turned on by molten chocolate cake or whatever.
When I read random books like this, I don't know how to rate them. This novel did make me rather impatient to move on, but I do think it goes beyond the standards of the genre in terms of making the secondary characters and plotlines detailed.
Being on the top of the sports management world, Michael Morgan has dealt with his share of female athletes, but his new client Shayna Washington has gotten his attention in more ways than one. Shayna is at the top of the track and field world and with Michael behind her, her brand is destined to soar. However, Shayna has a few things in her life destined to be in her future at all cost. Not sure who she can trust, Shayna puts her all in Michael, but didn’t bank on her heart being a part of that as well. Michael has his own struggles as this sworn bachelor begins to mix business with pleasure and realizes he may have found his match. Shayna finds she is in for the biggest race of her life and it’s not all smooth sailing to the finish line.
“Love on the Run” is an infectious story that shadows the innocence of a good natured person forced to deal with people in her life who may not have her best interest at heart and a past that does not want to stay in the past. The story line flows throughout causing readers to want to continue to find out who is behind the deception and lies. The characters are well developed and each brings an important part to the story line. I would recommend this to readers who enjoy a little intrigue with their story. It will have you cheering for Shayna until the very end.
I love a alpha man. Where they at, where they at? Michael Morgan is all of that and a bag of chips. Zuri Day did her thang with this novel. It was so good I went back an re-read it again. Michael Morgan brother to Troy and Gregory. Learned from the best his dad on how to treat his woman and his mother. Shayna Washington is a triple threat star track runner that hires Michael Morgan and his agency as her manager. When the past collides with the future, where they end up (well you have to read the story.)
This is a great read through the eyes of love. This story line is amazing. It's a steady flow of friendship, love, trials and tribulations. It was excellent.
This was a sweet read with a whole lot of spice thrown in. This is the Zuri Day that I have come to love. Shayna and Michael were so cute together fighting their attraction for one another, but once they came together it was explosive. I can see these Morgan men will shape up to give us a fantastic series.....I just hope we don't have to wait too long for the next one.
This was an excellent book that EVERYONE who reads it will enjoy it! I Loved Michael and how up front he was with women! I love the chemistry between Michael and Shayna! something needed to be done with Jerrell! He got away with too much! I will definitely recommend this book to others!
I am trying to hold on! I should have DNFed this book a couple of hours ago. I am listening to the audio book, narrated by Shari Peele. I have listened to several African American romances narrated by Shari and although I think she is non-Black, her voice always delivers. However, even her excellent oratory skills did not save this train wreck. I have just under 2 hours left and I committed to finishing so that I can give this book an honest review. But heads up…it’s not looking good so far.
Whew! Finally done ✅. That felt like the longest 9 hours of my life. Here is my review.
Love on the Run is a love story about Shana Washington, 25, an Olympian and professional runner and Michael Morgan, 31, a successful sports agent. At the beginning of the book, Michael is a player of the highest order and was juggling about a dozen or so different FWB, ONS, etc. Shana just ended a 10-year relationship with Jarrell (the author doesn’t say but I am guessing he is 25). Jarrell’s older brother Larson is married to Shana’s mother, Beverly. Michael recently signed Shana as a client and is committed to helping her win major endorsements. Michael and Shana become smitten with each other and start dating.
The good:
1) Shari Peele did an excellent job narrating, she made an otherwise painful read tolerable; 2) There was no cheating. There was plenty of OW/OM drama however. 3) I love a female athlete as the heroine and I loved the backdrop of track and field. 4) This book had a lot of potential. I loved the premise (a female track star and a playboy sports agent).
The bad:
1) The words used in both Michael’s and Shana’s inner dialogue during intimate moments were often inappropriate, misplaced or just plain dumb. Here are a few examples: girl child, vixen, love nub, Master P, honey pot. Suffice to say I did not enjoy the sex scenes.
2) The POVs were all over the map. The author switches POVs at the drop of a hat and would jump into someone else’s thought and describe what they are thinking. This is poor writing. I believe the author was going for a dual, third-person POV, alternating between Michael and Shana, but during these POVs we jump into the thoughts of Jarrell, Beverly, Dena and others. Pick a POV style and stick with it!
3) Both Shana and Michael couldn’t seem to make up their mind and go back and forth often in the inner dialogue
4) Shana was a weak and stupid heroine. She took the time to shield her address from her ex but invites him over after he beat her up….because her selfish and vindictive mother convinced her to? Also Shana was the only character that had no arc. She was stupid in the beginning and was stupid in the end. Michael, Jarrell and even Beverly had arcs in their characters, why not Shana?
5) Shana refers to Jarrell as her brother in law, which is not the case if his brother married her mother.
6) The author should have researched track and field a bit more. Shana refers to the following relays taking place at her track meet: 4x100 ✅ , 4x200 (this is a non-standard event and I never seen it -this is coming from someone who is an avid spectator and a former runner), 4x400 ✅ and 4x1500 (also a non-standard event and rarely seen).
7) A lot of Shana’s inner dialogue made no sense. Here is an example “The more Shana listened her mother sounded less ridiculous and more insecure” How do you sound less ridiculous and more insecure?
8) Shana was so accepting of her vindictive mother. Her mother manipulates her, was borderline abusive to her growing up and body-shames her. Again she is a weak heroine, which is a major pet peeve of mine. During one of the author’s jump in POVs, we learn that her mother, Beverly, was conspiring with Jarrell and admitted to Jarrell that she was trying to get Shana to get off the pill so he could knock her up. Beverly gave Jarrell Shana’s number and convinces Shana to see him after he beat the shit of her. Beverly encourages Jarrell to be patient because she believes Michael will kick Shana to the curb soon. What mother would want her daughter, an Olympic Gold Medalist to get pregnant by an abusive a-hole, because she thinks it will convince her husband, Larson, Jarrell’s older brother to stay faithful? Yet Shana is perfectly fine accepting rides from Jarrell, hugging him, having thanksgiving with him rather than her man. I would be kicking both Jarrell and Beverly to the curb, yet Shana remained loyal to them both. This made no sense.
There were other inconsistencies in this book, but I think I will stop here. I am generously giving this book 3 stars because it did have some good points and I applaud the author for depicting a player who reforms his ways without cheating and unnecessary OW drama.
This book had the potential to be somewhat better, but I think the opportunity for some "REALLY" crazy action to happen between Jay the ex and the main female character Shayna was missed. The build-up of the portrayal of the "ex" that won't let go was pretty obvious, joined with a downright ruthless/sorry mamma character had the potential to be something that dramatic novels are made of. I just knew something "else" was going to happen...... BUT then BAM......NOTHING. BIG HAPPY ENDING.
I'm no author, just a reader, but it felt like the first 3/4 of the book was written with some other ending in mind. It was as if Ms. Day started with one plot, but changed her mind at the end. I read the synopsis from the back cover and thought OOOOOH this sounds promising. At first I thought Shayna was being naïve, but then after the "drama" buildup, I thought oh she might could do something with this. I was hoping that Shayna found out about the somewhat scheming of her ex with her mother, or that the ex would do something else with it, but NOPE.....AND to top it all off, Jay the EX cracked her ribs at the beginning of the book, but he still got his "Big Happy Ending" as well. I won't buying it...SORRY!!! If your going to have that kind of "drama" in the book in the beginning, the main villain, if you will, in that drama should NOT be getting their happy ending as well....It was almost borderline condoning violence against women.....but that's a whole other review.
As far as the "chemistry" between the two main characters, I think it could have been a bit stronger, but it was over-shadowed by all of the family drama with Shayna. I mean after while it was a bit too much going one, and it almost seemed like the focus should have been on ONE plot OR the other!!! Trying to put the two together just didn't quite work, and it made the whole story a little weak.
I did LOVE the back stories of the main characters, Shayna and her Big Momma, and Michael, his brothers and their family. Those backgrounds made the characters believable. The girlfriend banter between Shayna and her friends was good and hilarious at times, and quite believable as well.
All in all the book just fell a little short for me.....I was going to read about the other two brothers, but I think I am going to stop here!!!
What an entertaining story ! 🔥🔥 The lead character " Shayna" remained confident and demure from running track meets to the Olympics to having her brand expand. Finding additional family and loving them was a plus. First time reading this author's work. I will be reading, "A Good Dose of Pleasure" and "Bad Boy Seduction" and other books. I enjoy her writing and artistry.
This book was fun. It takes you on a wild ride from beginning to end, the ups and downs, from the beginning of a relationship to the very end.
It has real world drama and it is incredibly fun to see them work out the kinks to find all the puzzle pieces that fit. I think you will enjoy this story.
Does it ever work to mix business with pleasure? Is it ever worth it to fall for a lady’s man??? Well Shay is about to find out. Michael gets what he wants and he didn’t even know how bad he wanted Shay and not just as a client. So much to unpack in Shay’s life and it had my nerves bad. This is a great story and entertaining read. The narrator did a good job.
I enjoyed the characters and the story. A great love story and a perfect match. I love the Alfa male. Can’t wait to read how the other brothers will get caught.
Slow at first, than picked up in the middle. I enjoyed the book, I thought Shaina was a tad bit gullable when it came to her ex and that aggravated me but, other than that, it was a cute story.
