Union with Christ: A Zondervan Digital Short

Rate this book
Derived from Michael Horton's recently released The Christian Faith, this digital short presents a full theological investigation into the biblical concept of union with Christ. Horton covers the nature of this union, exegetical development of the concept, and both historical visions and contrasting paradigms of it. He also draws connections between a Christian's ongoing union with his or her Savior and grace, ontology, essence and energies, and covenant---an altogether masterful sketch of a beautiful and mysterious spiritual reality.

This book, which is a chapter of Horton's massive work "The Christian Faith: A Systematic Theology for Pilgrims on the Way" is a very good introduction to the topic on union with Christ. It is filled with Calvin quotes, which I loved and seemed much more up my alley. The "book" alludes to other chapters in the larger work which makes you guess what the author is writing about ("You'll remember we covered this topic in depth in ecclesiology...", but mostly it was very helpful.

Union with Christ is a short study in the meaning and implecations of what it means for a Christian to be in Union with Christ. Being in union with Christ, we are reminded what we share being in Christ. We share in his election, life of obedience, atoning death, ressurection, justification, holiness, and glorification. We are in the family (a inheritance). Being in union with Christ, the covenants of God all fall together with Christ.

Horton attempts to be innovative in his views and ends up coming up short of the historical formulations of the doctrine. It's a question whether anyone in the reformed tradition has ever gotten union this wrong without being brought up on charges.
