Rate this book
The sexy baseball players of Jennifer Seasons' Diamonds and Dugouts series are back with the story of a single mom, a hot rookie, and a second chance at love.

Single mother Sonny Miller has spent years avoiding love. A rotten childhood and an even rottener ex-boyfriend left her determined to protect her son—and herself—against the risks of romance. That is, until hotshot ballplayer JP Trudeau swaggers into her carefully constructed life, all sin-with-me eyes and irresistible grin. Sonny can’t help but feel drawn to the sexy, confident man, even as every fiber of her being tells her to keep running the bases . . .

JP is known for being fast on his feet, not fast with his heart. But meeting Sonny and her boy sparks something in him—something he’s never felt before, not from all the cleat- chasers in the major leagues. Sonny may be hell-bent on keeping him at arm’s length no matter what, but this rookie has a plan. To get the girl, he must step up to the plate and convince her to take another chance on love . . . before this game gets rained out.

Playing the Field is the second book in the Diamonds and Dugouts series, and once again Jennifer Seasons has delivered a fun, romantic, sexy story.

JP Trudeau is the shortstop for the Denver Rush, Colorado's Major League Baseball team. He's an unrepentant cocky, sexy, chick magnet who enjoys the "perks" of being a celebrity. He loves his job, loves his community, and is pretty well grounded for a guy in his twenties, so when his team sponsors a charity event for diabetic kids, JP's all in. It's a gorgeous day, he's about to play ball with some great kids and he thinks that life can't get better than this... until he spots "one seriously luscious beauty..." headed his way, and life as he knows it is about to change.

Sonny Miller is happy with her life as an organic cheese maker, living on the ranch she grew up on, and then inherited from the grandmother who had raised her. As a child Sonny had been abandoned by her parents, and then as an adult abandoned by her boyfriend when she became pregnant. Needless to say, Sonny has trust issues. She's devoted to her son, Charlie, and will do anything she has to do to protect him, so she's decided she'll never get involved with a man again, and so far she's been successful. And with Charlie's diabetes, she's made sure their life is planned out, well constructed, and safe. Safe, that is, until JP Trudeau swaggers into it. From then on, all bets are off.

This really is a great story! The close knit, unstoppable duo of Sonny and her ten year old son, Charlie, are awesome, and then with the 'knows what he wants and stops at nothing to get it' hunky shortstop, JP, what we have is a winning lineup of characters I couldn't help but adore.

If you love contemporary romance as much as I do, be sure and give this series a try! You won’t be disappointed!!

4.5/5 stars

Many thanks to Avon Books and Edelweiss for providing me with a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review. As always, it was such a pleasure!

TGIS? Not for Sonny. Ever since she was young, she hated Saturdays. A lot of shit happens during Saturdays - every single heartache in her life happened on that day. When her young son happened to have an event to attend to one Saturday that she couldn't say no to - she couldn't believe her eyes when a fine specimen came into view. Yep, its JP Trudeau, he was even more drop dead gorgeous in real life than in television. She's done with men, except for her boy. But seeing Charlie grew up, suddenly made her felt alone.

JP on the other hand is known for his speed. He's pretty straight forward, he's young and currently at the peak of his career. But having met Sonny and her boy Charlie piqued his interest. He was sure that he wanted her - but her and Charlie are pretty much a package deal - was he ready for it?

I love JP to pieces, even with his big ego and persuasive, determined tendencies. He's used to getting what he wants, and although he means well and he really has big heart, it wasn't enough to convince Sonny that he wants her in his life for keeps. I couldn't blame Sonny for being guarded. She had been through enough to last her a whole lifetime - growing up with no parents and a single, struggling mother its no wonder why she always put Charlie's needs first before her own. Her mom had left her when she was young, literally dumped her outside her grandma's door - she worked hard not to be like that. With a son like Charlie who has special needs because he's diabetic, life is not a walk in the field. Her privacy, security and safety was important. With JP being hounded by paparazzi and chased by gazillion of fans, her privacy will be non existent. How long can she last before she finally admit that JP is the man for her?

It was a short, sweet read. Jennifer Seasons made it possible for someone who's truly afraid of opening herself to love find courage, take the plunge and finally fall in love with a person whom she least expected. I like stories about single moms, I find them very strong, raising a kid single-handed. It's not easy to guide a child to be a good person, takes a lot of hard work on their parts. Most especially, I greatly admire those mothers, whom although alone, puts their kids on top of their lists rather than their needs.

I had a great time and definitely, I am looking forward for Leslie and Peter's story - theirs are pretty interesting as well.

Well, it’s still baseball season and things are heating up; not only in the Pennant Race but in the bedroom. And, Jennifer Seasons is covering all her bases and hitting a grand slam home run with “Playing the Field”.

A sexy short-stop, a beautiful woman and a precious boy. What a combination this makes when hearts are on the line. The heart of the woman and the little boy that she has been raising on her own since birth.

It’s hard for Sonny Miller to trust anyone, especially a man. Her father ran out on her, her mother left her on the doorstep of a grandmother that didn’t want her and the father of her son ran as fast as he could when he found out she was pregnant. She is not about to let some hot-shot short-stop for the Rush just come in, take over her life and risk loosing both her and Charlie’s heart to him. But, boy does JP Trudeau make her heart sputter and her mouth water. To top it off, JP is Charlie’s idol. She can’t afford to start seeing JP and have him walk away from both of them.

JP Trudeau was born and raised in Iowa. The son of loving parents and a bunch of siblings, he was brought up to believe in love and everything that goes with it. But, he can be really cocky, over-confident and just damn pushy to get what he wants. He’s not the kind of guy that really sleeps around and he’s not really looking for a long-term relationship. But, sparks fly when he meets Sonny and Charlie at a charity event for children with diabetes. And, he can’t seem to be able to put out the fire that she ignites. Lucky for him that she and Charlie win the raffle for a night out with one of the Rush players. He’ll have more time to get to know her and find a way to her heart. Time for him to turn up the charm and let her see the real JP Trudeau, not the celebrity.

There are a lot of missteps and mishaps that occur while JP is trying to win over Sonny. One of the biggest stumbling points is his “celebrity” status. The Paparazzi are constantly hounding him. She could put up with his cockiness, she could put up with his traveling but she is not going to put up with her privacy being invaded. Well, honestly, that’s what she is telling herself to keep from falling too hard for JP. She can’t figure out what JP Trudeau sees in her, she can’t figure out why he is trying so hard to win her over; she can’t figure out how to hold on to her heart. When she finds out that he told Charlie that they were dating, and a picture of the two of them in an intimate moment shows up in a tabloid, well Sonny has had enough – she walk’s away. When he tries to win her back and he inadvertently hurts Charlie, she’s convinced that there is no man in the world that won’t hurt her or let her down in some way. But, in the end, JP comes through in the biggest of ways and wins both Sonny and Charlie back.

Yes, at one time I was a single mom so this story kind of sang to me. I understood Sonny being protective of Charlie and I understood JP’s frustration with not being given a chance to prove to both of them that he was sticking around and not just fooling around. There were times that Sonny was even giving me whiplash – she wanted him, she didn’t, she put him down, then she felt bad, then she insulted him, and apologized, again. And JP – wow – patience of a saint! He forgave her every, single time. Hell, woman – grab him and hold on! And, Jennifer Seasons really pulled it all together. You felt the hurt JP had when Sonny walked away; you felt terrible for Charlie when JP didn’t show up at his game; you felt Sonny’s indecision in letting JP into both her and Charlie’s life. She brought every feeling, thought and dream to life while incorporating laugh-at-loud moments, tender moments and hot, steamy sexy moments.

I love my sports romance books, so when I saw the second Diamonds and Dugouts book, I couldn’t wait to see what Seasons would have in store for us next.

JP has only been in the majors for two years, but he is the kind of man and player who knows exactly what he wants when he sees it. When he sees Sonny at a charity event for kids with diabetes, he knows right then and there she is what he wants. Although she is leery of his almost celebrity status, Sonny is drawn to JP in ways she never expected.

When Sonny told the father of her son that she was pregnant, he cut and run like so many other people in her life. She never expected to be a single mom, but she’s made it work. Now that the sexy and younger JP doesn’t want to take “no” for an answer, Sonny finds herself swept up in the romance and her son’s love of JP and baseball in general.

I really liked this book, but there was one aspect that was a big disappoint to me. I hate when authors add certain dynamics to their story, and then don’t really explore that aspect of the story. I liked that Sonny’s son had diabetes, however I felt like it was hardly touched on throughout the story, especially given how much they went out to eat and had various meals during the story. I would have liked to see Seasons explore that aspect of the story more.

That being said, I really liked the other aspects of the story. I thought the romance was so well done, especially as Sonny had to deal with JP’s fame and age difference. I loved the way that JP single-mindedly pursued Sonny, and kept finding new and different ways to spend time with her and her son, Charlie. I liked that Seasons also took the time to develop a relationship between JP and Charlie, and had them work on their relationship outside of the romance.

I loved Sonny, I thought she was such a hard working and genuine heroine. She had wonderful interactions with her best friend, and the other baseball girlfriends. I liked that she was so protective of Charlie, and at the same time allowed him to make a connection with JP. It felt real and easy and flowed well within the confines of the story.

I like getting a chance to see and know more of the baseball players who will hopefully be featured in future books in the series. I can’t wait to see what happens with Pete especially. He is such a louder-than-life character, and there is definitely something brewing with him.

All in all I really enjoyed this sophomore book from Seasons. JP and Sonny were wonderful characters who had a sweet romance. I loved how Sonny’s son, Charlie, fit within the story. Although I wished we would have had the chance to explore his disease more, it was a great read. I’m looking forward to more in this series!

As the second book in the Diamonds and Dugouts series we get to revisit the Boys of Summer as they're on the hunt for the women of their dreams. Playing the Field features an older woman, younger man theme and realistically displays all the issues pertaining to a single mother and the perceptions of what a young man wants out of life. The romance of upbeat and confident JP and the overly cautious Sonny, who's quick to assume the worst, is a slightly rocky one that's both sweet and teeming with sexual tension. From start to finish it's a fun story that had me falling completely for JP while being left frustrated by Sonny at times.

Sonny is a strong-willed woman who's devoted her whole life to her son, Charlie. She's neglected her own love life to make his dreams come true when possible. She's been hurt emotionally numerous times throughout her life and it's made her completely suspicious of everything that remotely promises to bring her happiness. She was immediately attracted to JP but fought against him every step of the way using her son as a shield. JP did everything to prove himself but Sonny was a hard one to win over. Even when they appeared to be heading towards a HEA she overreacted in a childish way that left me disappointed in her. It took a grand gesture to finally convince her and though their HEA was satisfying, I still think JP deserved a bigger apology from her.

JP is the ideal hero, charming and sexy. He's young in years but mature in his heart and soul. He knows what he wants out of life and who he wants in it. He's immediately drawn to Sonny and has no problem becoming an instant father to Charlie. He's immensely good interacting with Charlie and though he longs to jump Sonny's bones he understands she's gun shy and is willing to take their relationship slowly. Watching him woo her makes him even sexier as he shows a sweet and caring side in his dealings with her, right alongside the overpowering sexiness that radiates off him. His grand gesture was especially endearing though unnecessary as their falling out was clearly Sonny's fault. It just shows how important she and Charlie are to him that he was willing to take the steps necessary to bring them all back together.

This story brought a smile to my face as JP and Sonny were a delightfully compatible couple. Their sexual interludes were steamy but not too hot. The majority of their time together was spent getting to know each other which allowed us to get to know them. Not only do we get to meet a wonderful main couple but we get glimpses of the other ball players who are all charming and sexy themselves. I can see many wonderful stories still to come in this series as these players are to die for. Barring my momentary unhappiness with Sonny I found this story a wonderful read and can't wait for the next installment.

I loved the first book in this series and this second release by Jennifer Seasons doesn't disappoint. Sonny Miller is trying to do the best she can by her son and doesn't want to end up like her mother who basically chose her latest flame over her own child. When JP walks into her life with is larger-than-life self and public life she is really shaken. Sonny has not thought about herself or her own needs since her son was born and she has worked really hard to make sure no one can look into her past and make her ashamed to be who and what she is. She is also very protective of her son and doesn't want anyone to threaten their privacy. JP bulldozes into their life and doesn't mind all the public attention. He also comes from a large family and understand the importance of Charlie, Sonny's son in her life. Charlie is a huge fan and immediately takes to JP. As they begin to spend more and more time together JP is convinced that Sonny and Charlie are what he wants and needs in his life and Sonny is trying to reconcile what she wants with what is best for her and Charlie. When JP pushes a little too hard suggesting that they move in together after just a few weeks followed by a tabloid publishing a stolen moment between JP and Sonny, the safe, protective and very private lives of Sonny and Charlie are tested. The final straw comes when JP tells Charlie of his relationship with his mother and Sonny blows up. JP has to come to terms with the fact that he can't just charm them or bulldoze them in to doing what he wants and Sonny had to realize that JP is not going to hurt either her or Charlie. They both have to realize that this relationship is worth working for and learn to trust each other to protect not only their own hearts but Charlie's as well. The frustrations, love and caring that is written into this book is so much a part of being a parent that you can easily see where Sonny comes from in her protectiveness. I really enjoyed seeing how both JP and Sonny come to terms with their wants and needs to come to an agreement for all of them. - See more at: http://www.avonromance.com/post/playi...

I haven't kept my love of sports romances a secret, so it should come as no surprise that when I read the blurb for Playing the Field...I knew that I absolutely had to read it! :D I really enjoyed it, and I think I've definitely found another new sports romance author to keep my eye on...and I'll be going back to read the first book in this series as soon as I can!

All in all, I thought that Playing the Field was great. JP though, he was AMAZING....boy was he ever. JP and fantastic, sexy, male leads just like him are the reason that I enjoy this sub-genre of romance so very much. He was a cocky guy, so sexy and he knew it (haha)...yes, but he definitely had a good head on his shoulders, and he was so thoughtful. I pretty much fell for him right from the start...I don't know how Sonny held out for so long. :P haha I liked Sonny, but she did frustrate me and her reluctance to hear JP out kind of held me back at times during this book, but in the end she made me proud. :) I absolutely adored the two of them together, and once you added in Sonny's son Charlie, they made an awesome trio. I also enjoyed JP's budding relationship with Charlie, and all of the friendships in this book, I especially loved getting to see JP and his teammates interact. I thought Jennifer Seasons did a great job writing friendships and with the way that she developed relationships, too. I definitely got attached to the characters and their lives very quickly!

Overall, I thought that Playing the Field was a fantastic sports romance, and I absolutely loved JP. For the most part, I loved Sonny, too, but I did feel like she overreacted a bit and kind of just expected JP to be the one to fix everything...or she was just gonna let it all fall apart, ignore it, and go back to the way things were pre-JP...thankfully, he didn't let that happen. :P Even with Sonny being silly at times, I was still rooting for her and JP to work everything out, for the two of them, but also for Charlie's sake. I loved how he was getting closer to JP, and I thought it was amazing to see the three of them open up to each other. I'd recommend this one to other sports romance fans out there, and to any fans of romance who like seeing two great people find love...especially if you like hunky, wonderful male leads. ;)

Playing the Field is the second book in Jennifer Season’s Diamonds & Dugouts series. In this book shortstop JP Trudeau meets single mom Sonny Miller when her son Charlie is invited to a charity event at the Rush stadium. Sonny is not looking forward to the event as it occurs on the dreaded Saturday, the day of the week when all bad things in her life have occurred. On this Saturday, however, her luck has changed even if she doesn’t realize it at first. When JP sees Sonny he is a goner and sets out to make her see that she is the perfect man for her and her son. When Sonny sees JP she sees a handsome, cocky, athlete who seems to be hitting on her and she can’t imagine doing anything about it.
What I liked about this book is that Sonny doesn’t get all gooey over meeting a celebrity. There is an instant attraction to JP but his celebrity is actually a turnoff to her and she just can’t seem to let go of all her past issues and take a chance. JP has to work hard to earn her trust and to show her that he is interested in a serious relationship not just a fling. JP is younger than Sonny but that isn’t a big issue for her. I also liked that there was an actual plot to this book unlike some of the sports based romances that are just one sex scene after another with little in between. You get to know the other players and their stories as well as Sonny’s friends. There is a minor subplot of Charlie being diabetic and it is handled very responsibly. JP and Sonny both make some mistakes along the way but the ending is satisfying. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Playing the Field was sexy, sweet, and endearing. I love sports romance, especially when baseball players are involved. And, I'm really enjoying this series.

Going to into this book, I loved JP. He's the rookie on the team, so he's a bit younger than the others. Even though he's younger, he is really mature and responsible. Plus, JP has a heart of gold. When he meets Sonny, he's instantly attracted to her. She's not like the typical groupies. And, she has a son. In fact, her son brought them together in a way.

Sonny hasn't been in a relationship in years. She had a terrible childhood and her son's father left her stranded. So, she's settled into a life with her son. She's never made time for relationships, because they've never been good for her. Then, she meets JP. She's definitely attracted to him, but she isn't at all interested in his lifestyle. She feels like starting something with him could hurt her and more importantly, she doesn't want her son to get hurt. But, they can't stop their attraction and JP shows her time and time again that he is the guy for her.

Overall, I enjoyed Playing the Field. I'm not sure what exactly I expected going into this story, but what I got was a sweet romance with some spicy times thrown into the mix. This series has been a lot of fun so far and I can't wait to share my thoughts on the third book, Throwing Heat, which will post later this month.

"Take me out to the ballgame, take me out to the crowd... "- I love summer, I love baseball, I love baseball romance, so before I turned the first page I knew I was going to love Playing the Field by Jennifer Seasons.

After reading several "darker" or intense new adult romance novels this month, this book was just what the doctor ordered to lighten my mood!

Quirky characters always appeal to me, so I instantly liked Sonny. She is a single-mother making it on her own. She has her own business- a Goat Cheese business at that and is very superstitious.. JP is a farm boy from Iowa who made it in the Major Leagues and he is instantly drawn to Sonny and all her quirkiness.

Sonny's son suffers from Juvenile Diabetes. I enjoyed the tie in with this, Charlie is a fun loving kid that despite having a very serious childhood illness is able to lead a normal life. JP is amazing with Charlie and who doesn't love a man that realizes that Charlie is just as important to his relationship with Sonny as the relationship itself!

This is one of those books where there was nothing I didn't like about then hero or the heroine. It is a feel good read that will make you happy as they get to their happily ever after! I give this book four bright and happy smiley faces instead of stars!

3.75 Do the Trudeau Stars. This is a sweet, romantic and heartwarming story. It goes quickly and it isn't overly dramatic. There's plenty of baseball and humor with a fair amount of tension.

Sonny hates Saturdays, they are cursed. Every single bad thing that has ever happened to her has happened on a Saturday. Every. Single. One. Her routine is to avoid Saturdays as much as possible, stay home, clean the house, and don't see anyone. That's fine for her, but her 10 year old son, Charlie, would like a change in routine every once in awhile. Charlie is an adorable kid who absolutely lives and breathes baseball. He's gonna be a MLB shortstop, just you watch and see.

JP is the hotshot shortstop for the Denver Rush and the minute he spots Sonny and Charlie at the benefit the team is hosting he knows she's different. She's certainly not his usual type and the fact that she's a mom means that he's got a lot more to think about before starting anything. Although JP is a celebrity now, he grew up a down-to-earth Iowa farm boy, he's different than your usual baseball star. Can he convince Sonny? Can she deal with being around someone with celebrity status?

A cute, quick and fun read. And it's about baseball!!!!!!

LOVE JP and Sonny, love the kid, love the banter and sexual chemistry and the ups and downs. The only thing that confused me is the timeline. The way I understood it, this was set in the second year of JP's playing with the team however Mark and Isabel were only engaged, when, at the end of Playing the Field, they were already married. If someone could explain how that worked to me, it'd be swell! Looking forward to Leslie and Pete's story in Throwing Heat - especially after the bathroom scene in this book lol

Second read - 6 August, 2020
DNF
This didn't hold up for me on a second read. It was a bit too insta-lovey in some ways, and I wasn't engaged by the plot or the relationship development. DNF and unhauled.

Another late night to finish up the second book in this series! I really liked Sonny and JP. Being a mom, I could totally relate to making sure my child was no going to get a broken heart and not putting my own self out there for heartache. The mental images of JP in his baseball uniform though made for lots of smiles while reading this book. I always seem to feel like the climax at the end of the book is over too quickly. There is all this build up during the first 3/4 of the book, then lots happens in the last few pages. It never fails to make me want more!! Looking forward to the next book.

I liked this story much more than the first in the series. Although they are both stand alone stories, Mark and Lorilie make several appearances here.

I liked the whole single mom angle and how that really does change the dynamics as well as action of a couple along with their individual perceptions of the relationship. I don't see this much in the stories I have come across. Put in the press, well, there is a story to tell. I felt that Ms. Seasons was sensative to the situation and handled it very well. I'm looking forward to start the next book in the series ... wonder which Rush it will be this time?

I recommend this story to 13+ due to sexual situations.

I'm a huge fan of Ms. Seasons' Diamonds and Dugouts series. Baseball players are always a favorite and this series has had me hooked since STEALING HOME. This book is still sexy and fun, but I really loved the genuine emotion between JP and Sonny. She's such a great mom to Charlie and I really believed that she just wanted to protect him - even if it meant not trusting someone with her heart again. I won't give anything away, but you'll definitely be rooting for Sonny and JP!

Book Three - THROWING HEAT - is on it's way soon and I can't wait. Leslie and Peter - finally!!

As a single mother, Sonny Miller's son is her whole life. She does everything she can to protect Charlie and make him happy. When Charlie wants to go meet professional ball players at an event for diabetic children she reluctantly agrees. Sonny has to rethink her life choices after meeting JP Trudeau, one of the ball players. This is a great book involving concerns and fears of a single parent who is out of her confort zone and making major life decisions.... I really enjoyed this book and wanted to read it cover to cover in one sitting!

Cute little tale about a hard work, cheese making single mom, her adorable, not too annoying son and hot baseball hero I want to have for my own. Loved the witty dialogue and the love scenes are nice and steamy. Something happens at the end I felt wasn't needed in order to add tension for our main couple and just didn't work for me for the sake of having them separate, only to come back together and work through their issues.

I very much enjoyed this story, much better then the first book in the series. Both books are well written and have great characters, but Playing the Field for me, have more enjoyable characters. I liked how Sonny and JP worked out their troubles. I also liked the relationship between JP and Sonny's son, Charlie. I also got very teary eyed when JP did what he did for them. You must read it.

The book caught my interest right away but I quickly became bored. The big misunderstanding wasn't big enough. It felt forced, unnatural. It was so close to being good. I liked the hero. He seemed real, with good points and flaws. The heroine, not so much. She was not quite TSTL, but close. The resolution was well done. It saved the book from being a 2 star read..

Loved this story! A super sexy ball player who is kind, loving, and not caught up in the glitz and glamour, what's not to love?? When JP meets single mom, Sonny Miller, he's a goner. Now getting her to give him a chance. Great storytelling, writing, and characters make this a book you will want to read. I highly recommend it.

I really liked it. It was sweet and I really liked each of the characters despite their flaws.

I liked the character Sonny in the beginning but toward the end she started to get in my nerves. Overall is was a good read.

I loved the first book, but this book was only ok, mostly because Sonny (main female character) is annoying.
