In the spring of 1998, Koichi Sakakibara transfers into Class 3-3 at Yomiyama North Middle School. But little does he know...his new class has a horrible secret. When he takes his seat in class for the first day of school, Koichi is unsettled by his fearful classmates. Despite this atmosphere and warnings from fellow students, Koichi is drawn to the beautiful, distant Mei Misaki, another classmate. But the closer he tries to get to her, the more mysterious she and their class become. And when a fellow student dies a disturbing death - the first of a long chain of deaths - Koichi seeks to learn the truth behind the curse of Class 3-3. But can he get answers before the curse kills him?
For a reading challenge (Read Harder 2019) I was required to read a manga. Having never read manga before, I thought I would look for something on the more literary end of the spectrum, and above all, something short.
So naturally, I ended up reading this 700+ page omnibus of a YA horror series.
Another began as a novel and has been adapted as a manga series, an anime and a live action film, but going in I was unfamiliar with the story in its myriad forms. Basically it involves a cursed school class (a group of third years at a Japanese middle school, roughly equivalent to Year 9, I think) – one of whom is a ghost, referred to as ‘the casualty’. No one knows who the casualty is, including the casualty themselves, and they must find out in order to stop the grisly accidents that have been killing off the students and their family members.
Every 100 pages or so, someone dies in a gruesome manner (eg umbrella through the throat) but the black and white palette actively tones done the gore. I’m sure there were panels where I didn’t even realise the black inky smears were supposed to be blood. That is to say, as a horror this was quite tame, with the focus more on the suspense of ‘who will be next?’ and ‘who is the casualty?’ which in itself was enough to keep me turning the pages.
Another touches on some interesting ideas like the specific form of bullying that is ostracization, but in the end it relies on soap opera-ish twists (secret twins!) that keep it strictly lightweight. Plus, in an omnibus it’s easy to see how the story is stretched and padded for serialisation, making the whole thing a bit repetitive and drawn out. The monochromatic art style was often eerily beautiful though, so extra points for the visuals.
I can't believe I read this 10 years ago. I decided to have a reread on one of my favourite horror mystery manga :D
It still holds up even if i know the premise by heart. I can still feel the need to find out what happens.
Class 3 has a curse, and Kouchi transfers to a middle school in his mother's old hometown. Two students visit him in the hospital, but they don't tell him about the phenomenon surrounding his class.
At some point, he thinks his going crazy... Student deaths start happening, and now the mystery needs to be unravelled.
Paranoia hangs high as students turn against students because who is the real casualty that needs to be returned to the dead?
I can recommend this if you love horror manga filled with an intriguing plot. Even the light novels are good, and I am still to read the sequel. (Hopefully next year).
Orignal review 2015: This manga justifies the novel very well. This an omnibus collecting all four volumes for reading pleasure. It has an ominous feeling and keeps you entertained.
On the last page, the writer/artist who adapted the novel (which I have not read) to manga says he was originally supposed to do it in two volumes, but he was able to get it increased to four. This was a big mistake, as the creepy atmosphere and feeling of dread he was trying to create just turned to tedium as the story was dragged out for way too long.
Mostly, though, this story suffered from the sheer weight of its own made up mythology, with an endless number of rules and qualifications that had to be explained over and over and over (due to its original appearance in serial format) about the supernatural events that were occurring. Basically, a class in a middle school was cursed and haunted by a ghost. The ghost didn't harm anyone or even know it was a ghost, but people were somehow more likely to die from accidents and suicides because of its presence in the classroom. But this simple concept involved a fight-club-style set of rules for the classroom, ritualized ostracism, bloodline requirements, geographical proximity, continuity implants, post-event retcons, a willful blind eye from authorities, unexplained supernatural powers in a non-ghost character, on years and off years for the curse, vague and inconsistently timed bouts of mass amnesia, vague and inconsistent wiping of print and electronic media, and a few more things I'm sure I'm forgetting.
By the time the twist ending came, I just didn't even care who the ghost was, just that the identity would be revealed and the story would end. Or at least as much as a horror story can end when the author hopes to sell a sequel.
I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. In no way does that influence this review.
First off, the artwork is absolutely beautiful. The colored pages at the start of each volume are amazing. I really enjoyed the story, it's very different than most manga I read. Page after page, I just couldn't put it down. It was so interesting, I just had to know what was going to happen. The story will keep you on the edge of your seat. You won't be disappointed with the ending. I thought I knew what was going to happen and I was completely wrong. I definitely recommend reading this manga and experience it for yourself.
Best manga i have read in a while. The story is so interesting and i even want to know all the other years the curse was active. I am really considering reading the novel where the manga and anime was based on.
If you like a thrilling story, beautiful artwork and a creepy curse than this is the manga for you! Also go watch the anime if you liked this manga, its amazing.
4/5 Stars: ‘Another’ by Yukito Ayatsuji. → Age Range: Young Adult. → Genre: Mystery, Horror Manga. → Trigger Warnings: Suicide, Gore, Death.
In-depth Rating: → Plot: ★★★★★ → Character Development: ★★★★★ → Setting: ★★★★★ → Entertainment Level: ★★★★★ → Writing: ★★★★★
General Comments: An air of mystery and subsequent amounts of gore; the use of symbolism, artwork, and atmosphere adds to the emotions of scepticism, confusion, and doubt felt on par with the characters; character’s eyes predominantly standout in comparison to facial features, while not an uncommon trait, it promotes the ideas that our reality is skewed – adding depth to the underlying curse of Class 3-3.
Favourite Quote: ‘No matter how many relationships we seem to have, we’re all alone.’

One of my favourite horror manga ever in a 4 volume completed omnibus format with beautiful colour pages!!! The art is just gorgeous and the storyline so captivating that you want to read the whole omnibus without a break!!! I definitely recommend it!
A bit slow in the begining but then it starts to build up... Not as great as the novel, I also think the novel has a more errie and creepy vibe to it than the manga version. Another volume 1-4 by Yukito Ayasuji get a 7/10 stars.
picked this up on a whim after seeing it in my local bookstore, and honestly, it was such an interesting mystery that kept me intrigued till the very end. also i loved how the art got super creepy to emphasize a character's state of mind... for example: the eyes O_O...iykyk!!!
Story Line: 5 stars out of 5. Yoriyama high school is cursed. 26 years earlier a student died. After the death of the student...other students could still see him/her. That he/she was never dead at all. Every year after that the class 3 in the school always had calamity. I loved this whole manga. I saw the anime before I read it. I wanted to see the major differences between them. There were some differences between them. There weren't as many deaths in the manga as there were in the anime. The anime had the same ending as the manga, but some of the characters that died didn't die in the manga. I still felt the manga was great. I loved the anime also. I may read the actual novel also. I find it cool that it was written three ways.
Characters: 5 stars out of 5. Since there are a lot of characters in this story I'm only going to focus on two. They were my favorite. Kōichi Sakakibara and Mei Misaki are my favorite characters. Kōichi Sakakibara lived in Tokyo before he moved in with his grandparents in Yoriyama. His lung collapsed so he was in the hospital. He was a kind person. He was the first one to befriend Mei. She was different from everyone else. The class as a whole decided to ignore her to stop the curse. I felt bad for her. She didn't deserve that treatment. I loved getting to know both of those characters. I loved that they were able to solve the mystery behind the calamity together with other classmates.
I finished this omnibus for the millionth time haha. This is an adaptation of the novel "Another" by Yukiyo Ayatsuji. The adaptation is quite beautiful, I love the artwork and it sticks pretty close to the novel. The only difference is the pop culture references are gone with this one, since I think there may be come copyright issues. Too bad, because I loved catching all of the horror pop references in the novel ;)
I feel like most of this story could have been avoided if Mei would have spoke up since the beginning after her
I'm no fan for horror or even worse the gore type but I think this one thrilled me! It was seriously frightening but yet addicting horror manga I've ever read! My mind was already haunted since the first chapter then I started hesitating to continue when it came to the part when someone died with the umbrella pierced through the neck! And hell yea I stopped when the boy nearly entered the doll house! Those dolls totally creeped me out!!! And I seriously HATE those evil-smiling creatures! I so wanna continue the manga but I could get heart attacks if I do so!
Oh and yea people sorry if this is not the right chapter to review on, I think the umbrella part was somewhere after this.... Oh but no needing spoiler alert because the part will come unexpectedly!
There are depictions of: 1) graphic violence 2) consumption of alcohol 3) death 4) blood
...Overall, it was a good manga. The first 200 pages are slow but after that, the pace picks up and stays consistent over the whole manga. Some parts that involved the main character's aunt did become... dull and repetitive but after finishing the manga it all makes sense.
The initial setup of Another was boring and most of the characters were bland until that first death happened. After that the plot and two main characters became interesting. There was an attempt at a "haunted/creepy" school vibe but I did not get that. Even with the mysterious deaths taking place the school still seemed "bright/happy". The only time I got the haunted/creepy vibes was when the students went to the abandoned part of the school and got that cassette tape.
There are awkward parts throughout the whole manga. I noticed it when I was around page 206 when the boys were talking about the curse of classroom 3 but never really talked about the curse. This happened a few times until that student became a "not here" as well.
As for the disturbing aspect of the manga, it was... Okay... If I am being honest. The audience does not develop any emotional connection to those deaths to make it more profound and/or disturbing. The concept felt rushed. It was like... "Oh, we need to hurry up and kill off all these side characters".
The last thing I will say is that it is a decent manga and if you read it you should also watch the anime.
I liked the concept of this manga and the first few chapters were really good. Closer to the end, however, I thought that it was a little confusing and felt a little thrown together. But overall, I enjoyed it.
Another was a good read. It was thrilling, with every page really wondering what was going to happen next with characters. It starts off rather slow, and then really just takes off and dives into deep, dark and drastic details throughout all of the characters, slowly tearing the whole class apart.
4.5 ★ — Binged this and is as good as the anime, there are also many changes and more explanations about things I didn’t know. Now I need to read the novels.
