Two of St. Alphonsus LIguori's classics in one volume. Written in 1755, Uniformity with God's Will is a wonderful little treatise on the true love of God. Saint Alphonsus de Liguori writes to encourage believers to unify their wills with that of God's, so that they may love God "the more one unites his will with the divine will, the greater will be his love of God." To choose otherwise--i.e. to choose not to unify one's will with God's--is "a kind of idolatry." These seven short chapters, not simply prone to abstract speculation, explore concretely how to make one's own will uniform with God's through the hardships of this life. Further, the book discusses the fruit of such a union with God's happiness. De Liguori concludes by noting how, in all things, Christians must remain steadfast in their union with God's will. For in so doing, God will "press us to his heart." Challenging and encouraging, Uniformity with God's Will has the power to remind us of what true love of God really is. In The Practice of the Love of Jesus Christ, Saint Alphonsus Liguori points out the practical wisdom contained in St. Paul's meditation on love in 1 Corinthians 13. Divided into seventeen small chapters, each preceded by prayers and intercessions, it offers practical prescriptions for living a holy life.
Saint Alfonso María de Liguori, CSsR (1696–1787), was an Italian Catholic bishop, spiritual writer, composer, musician, artist, poet, lawyer, scholastic philosopher, and theologian.
He founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists). In 1762 he was appointed Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti. A prolific writer, he published nine editions of his "Moral Theology" in his lifetime, in addition to other devotional and ascetic works and letters. Among his best known works are "The Glories of Mary" and "The Way of the Cross", the latter still used in parishes during Lenten devotions.
He was canonized in 1839 by Pope Gregory XVI and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1871. One of the most widely read Catholic authors, he is the patron saint of confessors.
A great book to meditate on and a wonderful reminder that our God deserves to be loved with all our hearts all our spirit and all our strength and from that love God will provide us the ability to love our neighbors. A very timely and relevant message for our current turbulent times. Praise be to God most high and to the Son Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
This book is exceptionally beautiful. It was recommended to me by Meg Hunter-Kilmer, a wonderful Catholic speaker. This book is life changing. It is easy to see why Saint Alphonsus Liguori is a Saint and a Doctor of the Church. True to its title, this whole book is treasure leading you into a fuller surrender to God's will and a deeper relationship with Jesus. This book would be a tremendous companion for anyone in the midst of a difficult season, although it is not limited to trials and tribulations. For anyone wanting to live a more enriched faith and a profoundly Catholic life, this book is an incredible one to read over and over. Note: This edition is full of typos, however the content is so amazing that even the most egregious typos did not cause a detraction or distraction in the experience or enjoyment of the book.
