Gray and Leon had the best plot line, Aquarius is absolutely the character I'm more intrested in. Idk I didn't feel or paid much attention to Lucy or Natsu in this volume. Elsa and Gray are still my fav characters.

The fifth volume of the Fairy Tail manga continued on with the Deliora arc. Despite the love this arc has received, I have to admit that I find it rather preposterous. I'll explain how.

In the previous volume and in this one, despite my opposition, I felt a little sorry for Lyon. Here was a guy who had his entire dream thrown away. And why? Because a stupid boy wanted to avenge his family and didn't have the necessary skill to do it. I understand why Lyon would hate him, why he would want to harm Gray. What I don't understand is how could he be so foolish as to go and try to revive Deliora? And how could all those people help him, especially when they (and he too, by the way) have seen the hell Deliora can create? It doesn't make sense. It is as if, the writer lacked ideas and wanted to write something just for the heck of it. I agree this was probably the longest arc as of now since it will continue in the next volume, too but I find it highly ridiculous. I mean, the guy (Lyon) was basically a kid throwing a tantrum.

Yet, despite all of that, this volume receives a 4 star from me because it answers a lot of questions about Grey's past. I believe soon we'll be learning about others as well, say Erza, Lucy and Natsu. And I can't wait to do that. The background added a lot more character to his character. It humanized him and explained many, many things about him. I would love to see more of these guys in the future, as long as the plots behind them are not absurd.

I can no longer think of this series or each volume in terms of "good" or "bad", for the work of Hiro Mashima has transcended any and all labels that could possibly be comprehended by the human psyche. By which I mean ayy lmao this is a series you just gotta read for fun, man. And that's what I'm doing, I'm having a good time reading through this series. It helps a lot that these are supersonically fast reads, consistently clocking in at 1 hour and 30 minutes, even when I really take my time and look at the art.

Speaking of art: I think it's pretty good? Comparatively, I mean. A lot of times, especially with weekly/long running series like this one, the art can get pretty lazy. One series that comes to mind is Yu Yu Hakusho. The art is usually pretty decent but you definitely notice when the author starts cutting corners on certain panels. But with Fairy Tail, literally every panel is on the same level, art-wise. I appreciate that a lot. Of course, Mashima has assistants helping him out, and I don't know if the mentioned manga's author had such help. Also, Fairy Tail was still new at this time (having just reached one year) so they might not have had the chance to be lazy yet. We'll see! But at this point I'm quite satisfied with the quality of the art. As an extra note: Mashima draws a lot of good funny faces, which is not something I remember noticing in the anime, but something I notice and like a lot in the manga.

Speaking of the manga, I'll mark on something about the volumes. These volumes have the most bonus content of any series I've ever read; Comic, graphic novel, manga, novel, or otherwise. It's pretty rad. In this volume we got a fricken colouring book page (although I'd argue that the whole manga could be a colouring book), two pages of fan art with accompanying comments from the author, a Q & A section, a rad Mashima-personality-filled afterward, and a few pages preview from the next volume.
"FT still has a long way to go!! We'll go for at least three years!!" -Hiro Mashima
Lmao this series sure passed it's goal. Thinkin' a little small there, Mashima.

Jesus Christ that's so much extra stuff, AND THAT'S NOT ALL!!

The English edition of this adds EVEN MORE extra content, if you can believe it!! It has this whole Translation Notes section that explains some colloquialisms and other Japanese culture tidbits that a Western reader might not have understood while reading. It even teaches you about honorifics, if you don't know about those. It's just so nice and thoughtful to have, and I appreciate it a lot. Especially since I've never seen this done on any other manga, so the translator is just plain going out of their way to help out the reader. You can even get some of the translator's personality in the explanations, and it's all so very nice.

As we all know, as of the previous volume I had switched to using my library's e-book collection to read this series. And I am sure this is something you must know since of course you've been following my Fairy Tail Re-Watch-Read from the very beginning, with eyes wide and your butt perched at the edge of your seat, eagerly awaiting the next installment in this riveting saga. I finished reading volume 4 two days ago, and as of then volume 6 was signed out to someone already. I was ready to wait a couple weeks for their lending period to be up (as none of those cretins who use my library ever bother returning books early) but when I went today to put myself on the list, I saw--huzzah! It was returned! And so the saga will continue even sooner than planned. Thank you, masked and unknown fellow library-Fairy Tail reader, for not being a filthy book hogging cretin like the rest of them.

Compulsory sad backstory? Check. It's a volume that is sprinkled with good moments, but doesn't have the overall pizzazz that makes the greats standout.

This was an epic volume, it continues the story on Galuna Island but Erza also comes in and we have some great moments like the first fight between Lyon and Gray and we learn the backstory of what happened in their past, their master Ur and her sacrifice which was so emotional and it just shows this is a personal fight for Gray and when all hope is lost, his friend Natsu wont let him. Meanwhile other members confront lackeys of Lyon and its a fun fight seeing it. Also the art and the background and the detailing is just insane. I am loving this one. The story even though extended feels like its building to something big.

What I like the most about the actual manga? I feel like it's more realistic than the anime. For example, there's more blood, whereas in the anime there's almost nothing like that. Nevertheless I'm still enjoying it as much as I enjoyed the anime.

Continued action with some revelations. I continued the series after a long time, so it was a little challenging to pick up the story, but it was still enjoyable with good graphics. So let's go and keep on reading.

I have always loved comics, and I can and I have. I love comics to bits, may the comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more. You should also read what you love, and I hope you will always love it. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics, Diamond Comics, or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on international and classic comics and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I just want to Keep on Reading.

Fun but a bit long in the tooth.

World: Solid art, especially the fights. World building is good here with a lot of the past that shows where Gray comes from.

Story: A continuation of the island story and more reveals of the reasons and past. Pacing is solid but the story is kinda running a bit long. The past is well done and has the standard motivations for Shonen books. I am looking forward for this arc to end though.

Characters: Solid and standard character work for Gray and the others. We get the past of Gray and it is exactly as you would expect it to be. So it's solid.

Solid but this arc needs to end.

Onward to the next book!

I find I can get through two of these books in a night and still have time to watch a television program before I go to bed. I am still enjoying the current arc and the continued character development which is being made in this series.

This is a great backstory for Gray. I also like the character pages which have started showing up in the books. It gives a a good idea of who the characters at the guild are and what they each do. This series will be more interesting if we can get a good look at more of the backstory behind each character with the coming adventures.

4.5/5 The best volume yet. Kicking off where the last left off on the Demon Island. A lot of action this time around as well as Lucy’s first real one on one battle which was hilarious. Natsu has a few different battle as well.

We also get the rest of the back story on Gray which was also good.

We have our Fairy Tail team as the members of Lyon’s party on the cover of volume 5 as well as the perverted bovine Taurus.

More fighting, including Lucy doing a pretty OK job (though I really hate Aquarius and her attitude), Erza coming by and being her own terrifying self (yikes to the wizards who messed with the rules), there is an epic backstory on Lyon, Gray, and Ur which I loved (and made me cry a bit), there are other battles and kick-ass things happening, and BOY it was a ride! I am really enjoying the series so far~

KU manga

I never understand why a characters first choice is we’ll die together. Pointlessly sacrificial. Lyon and Gray’s past with Ur. Lyon seems like a creepy kid from the get go. Erza being initially uncaring and then joining in and some weird one in a mask that has their own agenda.

This volume just didn’t grab me the way that the previous ones had. I put it down for the longest time and it probably took me around a month to complete. Loved hearing about Gray’s backstory and loved both Lyon & Ur!
Curious to see what happens in the next volume because things got pretty intense!

Lyon is psychotic. Literally. The man needs to go to a psych ward. I pity Gray. The truth he had to keep to himself for ten years? That’s a lot of guilt. But hey! Learned why he’s always taking his clothes off. Makes a lot more sense now. And who’s the man in the weird fox mask????
