This classic guide encourages people to elevate their beer drinking to the same degree usually reserved for fine wine. Writing about of the history and ingredients of beer Jackson shows us that “Beer deserves to be treated as a civilized drink; it may even have been the cause of civilization.'' Michael Jackson (died August 30, 2007), was a trailblazing and very influential beer writer and journalist.

Historically important book, but dated

First read this when I was getting into beer from the library. I was glad very recently (August '09) to treat myself to a copy of this book from Powell's. I'm sure many of the beers and places have drastically changed in the 20 years since this book was published, but still the variety of beer and the obvious enjoyment Michael Jackson took in them is evident.

Somewhat out of date now I'm afraid, and not his best. This is more of a beer tour book, but not in the convenient "Moon Handbook" style. A large format coffee-table book does not fit well into a backpack.

A great introduction to the immense world of beer, circa the late 1980s. I can't decided if I gained more knowledge from this coffeetable volume or more appreciation for what's in my glass. I'd be happy to re-read many portions of this TNWGB.

Like most guides, the details were solid at the time of publishing and become dated over time. I could see using this as a reference when planning a trip.

Good pictures and illustrations, including beer labels, breweries, and brewers. I wish the labels were presented in their true colors.
