Will she be able to handle all of Anderson...the damaged man, the bad boy, the raw fighter?**This novel contains intense sexual situations and mature language. It is intended for an audience at 18+ years of age.**
Got drawn in by the blurb, but had a really hard time finishing it.
The writing is what I would consider average and by mid-book I was skimming over the sex scenes.
The ending was preposterous and unbelievable. I can usually suspend belief if the story, characters and writing are compelling, but that was not the case here.
I was actually laughing at the "drama" of the finale...so I guess the end was a kind of slap-stick comedy rendition of the cavalry taking down the bad guy in the last minutes of a spaghetti western.
All in all a very disappointing read. If I had had anything else loaded on my new Kindle, it would have been a dnf.
The one star is for the underground fighting, that's it. I got all the way to the 89% mark and I just had to stop reading or skimming as I was at that point. Everything happen way too quick in this book, it literally spiralled out of control after the first chapter.
I mean, the hero and heroine told each other they loved each other in the eight chapter, up until that point I didn't see anything indicating love between them, it more like lust and obsessiveness but not love.
I didn't like Anderson at all which was a bit of a shock for me, it's usually the heroine that I wish death upon but Anderson was, well, a bit of a bitch. He saved Kaela from getting raped, brings her home and when she demands to know his story he spills everything from his past to her, his parents and brothers deaths, how he came to be a fighter and so on. I've never see that in a book, usually the hero doesn't reveal personal stuff like the until the end of the book when he is about to loose his girl or guy and tells them about his nightmare past which make him act the way he does. He is usually mysterious not an open book.
I also couldn't take his name seriously, any time I read it, in my head the voice from the agent in The Matrix would awaken and say 'Hello, Mr Anderson' making me snort.
Kaela made me laugh, not in a good way though. I was laughing at how pathetic she was. I couldn't believe after she was beaten and almost gang raped by drunken scum bag's she goes with Anderson to his apartment and thinks of nothing but having sex with him. She wasn't traumatised in the slightest, she was apparently beat up pretty bad and the next day her soreness was hardly mentioned. The job offer Anderson gave her to be his assistant was stupid as well, it was all just so badly put together.
Oh, and I knew Robert was the mob guy the papers were talking about once Kaela read the article. What manager of an MMA fighter has two bodyguards with him everywhere he goes? Exactly!
Hopefully I can just forget about this book because I'm sure as hell deleting it off my Kindle.
I was bit skeptical when it came to reading this due to the reviews, but I'm glad I picked it up and read it.. This book had everything I could ever ask for in a fighter book, adventure, romance, sizzling hot MMA fighter guy, ruthless mob bosses, likeable female character, that wanting to know what was going to happen next..From page 1 I was hooked..Bring on Book 2!!
This book was too fast paced. I mean she falls in love with him so quickly. The characters were not developed enough. It just jumped from one extreme to another. Book needed more substance. Real by Katy Evans was much better. After I read this I felt cheated out of my money somehow, for good reason.
Wow. Just...wow. Not a great read by any stretch of the imagination.
The characters were weak - no development. And - as was stated by another reviewer- the name "Anderson" kept making me think "Mr. Anderson" from the Matrix. I really hated the "heroine", and the "hero"? Not much better. They were just both so shallow - no development.
There was no plot - or at least nothing stimulating or original. Guy saves girl from being raped (her injuries are skimmed over after of course) and she isn't affected by this at all! Who gets almost raped by a gang of guys, and isn't traumatized??? Anderson offers her a ludicrous job, they confess their love stupidly soon. Mob boss wants girl gone - and spoiler - I knew it was Robert from the get go. No suspense at all.
But the worst? IT WAS SO EVER LOVING BORING. I picked it up because I thought, hey, MMA fighting - that could be different/good. How wrong I was. I won't be re-reading this, it was a sheer struggle to get through the whole book.
Anderson may be a sexy bad boy fighter but he's considerate, "you think I'm going to leave you on some doorstep?" he said, sounding almost offended. "You're not fit to be alone right now. We're going back to my place." He interacts great with Kaela: "Your apartment is the entire floor?!" I Exclaimed. "Well, yeah," he said helping me over the threshold and closing the door behind us. "What, yours isn't?" He also voices what he likes, "well, I for one have enjoyed watching you stumble," he said, turning back to the stove. "Particularly when it's into my bed." I liked this book it had a few twists and turns and I can't wait to read more from this author.
Couldn't finish it. Got to chapter 8 and I just couldn't connect with any of it. It moved too fast, I like more of a build up. After an attack and near rape I think I would be traumatised for months if not years, and she just seemed to shrug it off! Seriously! An hour after she wants to sleep with Anderson! Sorry, not believable in the slightest. Too much wrong with this book.
I liked it quite abit was rushed in places and the falling in love was very quick to but overall a quick exciting read... the character's we're abit undeveloped but nothing that bad that made the story less readable loved the cover... HOT HOT HOT!! would read more if there is going to be a follow-up..
2.5 Stars. I liked the MMA/fighting aspect in the book, one of the main reasons I picked this up, but I wasn't a fan of all the dark drama that was added to the book. It was too far fetched and not believable enough.
After reading two and working on a third disappointment of a book, Natalie Baird's Shattered was such a breath of fresh air! This was the best thing I've read this summer. With a plot that was classic without being cliche , Baird takes us into a world of underground fights, grotesque and vile men, and I can't forget the all-consuming, instantaneous love connection between our heroine and dreamy bad boy.
In the beginning, I couldn't help but feel bad for Kaela (I say it 'Kayla' because it's easier but it's probably more like 'Ky-la,' just saying!). She did what loads of people have done and will do, but reality was quick to catch up to her. Struggling to survive in the man-eating city of New York, she has a sad job with an awful employer and is seemingly stuck. When Anderson Cole finally tumbles into her life, imaginary cape flowing in the wind and black catmask covering his eyes, Kaela is immediately done for, which is totally understandable because Anderson is impossible to not fall in lust with!
As soon as they encounter each other, the whirlwind begins. Baird throws drama and tragic pieces onto us and spins the pair into a tornado of a love affair that, naturally, has to meet only the biggest of obstacles.
"You're damned right it doesn't make any sense," Anderson said, "How could living without each other be what's best?"
I read this book in a day, though it's been sitting in my library for a while. I never got around to reading it but it was a nice one when I finally did. Definitely happy I opened it up and dug in! Besides a few minor errors scattered here and there, this was a gem and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for an interesting and completely unexpected story to keep them on their toes! Also, I think I should mention that while the sex scenes were fairly mild and not intensely graphic or descriptive, they were pleasant and nice enough to enjoy to read without feeling forced or rushed or awkward. I would have enjoyed a bit more spice but the writing was good enough to carry itself without being doused with erotica. Baird did a lovely job with this piece and it deserves a lot of recognition just as she deserves a lot of credit! So, good job, Natalie Baird, and thank you; you made my day quite enjoyable!
I have a lot of issues about this book. I felt like I was reading about Travis Maddox (Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire) and Remington Tate (Real by Katy Evans) both in the same book without the alluring of either.
There's this Anderson underground fighter who happens to be in Kaela's neighborhood and saves her from getting rape. He takes her to his penthouse, cleans her and let her sleep. Since she's too awake and lusting after Anderson (just a few moments after being attacked <- 1st issue) she asks him to tell her about himself. To my surprise he spills the beans, he says all his tragic story without second thoughts <- 2nd issue. If I were and underground fighter I wouldn't be telling my life story and what I do for living. What if she'd been a police officer or a reporter or someone sent to distract me. If that was the way I earn my money I wouldn't be telling at all. She ends up "working" for him (if you count sleep with the boss as a job since there's nothing written about what she's supposed to do as his personal assistant <- 3rd issue). Then there is the fight which he almost lost by smiling at him and we get to know the creepy guy. Moving on in the plot I just kept thinking Anderson is really stupid, he doesn't care where the money comes from as long as he gets to fight. He never complains about his lifestyle and it isn't cheap at all. So, I thought Kaela has the brains and something is going to come up to show him he's been played. But that doesn't happen, she has to hear the truth from Robert's mouth to realized how bad things are. Luckily, Anderson is close to the conversation to listen to everything without being noticed by Robert <- 4th issue. He comes up with the must stupid plan (already stablished he's not bright) to just throw the towel (literally), which was in his back pocket the whole fight BTW, and start shouting everything Rob'd done to him. Obviously people is going yo believe him and then the police arrive to save the day and let them run away <- 5th issue. They have their HEA as fugitives (I guess) and I still wonder how Anderson gets access to his money if Rob was the one who took care of that.
This is the second book I read about this author and I'm done. The story line is similar and it reminds me of other books I've read. She can tell a story but not for my liking.
So why only the two stars? Well I asked myself the following questions:
Is this one of those books that I had to stay up all night and read into the small hours just so I could finish it - well no......
Was it tense and gripping and a page turner - well no..........
Was it steamy as hell - It had it's moments but... - well no........
Were the characters really engaging and be truthful - well no........
Was the story clever and well plotted - well no........
So all this sounds harsh but actually the book did kinda lack the above, I found some of the steamy scenes to be filler text, whole weeks were skimmed over when they first got together and then we read a steamy scene when the plotting could have been engaged more. I also found it very fast paced and that had the knock on effect of it hard to engage the characters fully and that includes the nasty ones.
I didn't connect fully with Kaela. There was no way enough of the charged atmosphere in the fighting ring either, this came across actually as a bit secondary. I also found a fair bit of filler text where she is mulling over events of the day or previous day, did that really need going over again and it happened too often for my liking and placed in such a short story it's yawn worthy.
So this had potential but it just doesn't make the cut with the excellent fighter books out there at the mo, but don't get me wrong, it's not dreadful it's just a plods along and it's not riveting but it's readable. It's good enough-ish but certainly not great and not one for those of us hardcore, diehard, badass fighter lovers to rave about.
Kaela is living in New York but just managing to get by working as a barista in a dive of a coffee shop, her boss and most of the clientele are scum, she works so much that she has little time to appreciate New York itself. After locking up the coffee shop at midnight she's attacked by four guys as she makes her way home she's rescued by Anderson who turns out to be a underground fighter, a great alpha male who's suffered his fair share of loss. Anderson's life is the complete opposite of Kaela's he lives in a penthouse apartment and money is no object the attraction between these two is instant but seems as if it could be so much more, can Kaela fit into his world of violence and money or will he try to fit into hers, or will their relationship burn itself out.
I loved this book, it was way too short I could just have kept on reading and reading, I'll definately be looking for more books by Natalie I read Beauty in the Breakdown a while ago and loved that as well.
This book was pretty okay. It felt a little rushed, but overall, I was happy with the direction and play out of the storyline. I was a little bit annoyed at the rushing of the love story, but it was hot. There were parts that were too drawn out (i.e., them traveling the country to run from the mob).I also wish the bad guy part would have been written out a little more in depth and made more of a pronounced part in the book instead of kind of dragging it along with minimal suspense that, if played out just a bit better, could have added another dimension to the whole story and really stood out more. Great idea though, everyone loves a bad boy with a heart that only has eyes for the heroine. Especially an underground fighter....3.5 stars
Anderson, Supposed to have a bad boy mysterious image, but within the first few chapters, you already knew all about him, and i found my interest quickly dissipate.
Keala, average female lead, no real fight or sass or edge to her character, all a bit hum drum!
Storyline...
Starts well, hooks me in, but then it becomes quite boring and predictable. There was plenty of chances the storyline could have become more complex and thrilling, and build on suspense and attraction between the two characters. Anticipation is key!!!
Overall easy to read book to waste a couple of hours!
Had this book in my to read lust for a while and finally got around to it. I wasn't disappointed. Actually enjoyed the storyline - had a little bit more action that your average love story.
So why only 3 stars....... I agree with some other reviews that it all happened a bit too quick - she'd fallen in love after only a few days and he had no problems reciprocating her feelings straight away. Overall a good story. But compared to other books I've read recently only deserves 3 stars. Would recommend if you want an easy read.
Let me start with the fact the story concept was good and interesting. Who doesn't like a good underground fight now and then? Unfortunately the concepts execution was not done justice. The story felt far too rushed which made it feel super unrealistic. I mean come on after week their both saying I love you, I can't live without you and I'd die for you. That's not healthy love. I wish the author had spent a little more time developing the characters, their love, and the story.
This was a quick read for me and I enjoyed it Anderson was the star of the underground fighting circuit and kaela the women who works in a small coffee shop owned by a ass hole when she leave the shop one nite after closing up she gets followed by a group of men and is attached but before it can get any worse a guy appears from nowhere and takes down the attackers one by one then he helps her and then her life is turned upside down x
I think this book had alot of potential but to me it just felt a little rushed in some areas and drawn out in others. I've read books where the main characters were either having sex or falling in love within pages but it flowed and felt okay yet with this one it just kind of fell flat. Won't say I didn't like it, because I did.. I just think it could have been better. I'll probably still look for any other books that might come to finish reading about Anderson and Kaela's story.
this book had so much potential... it just never really got there for me. everything was so rushed. And I'm sorry but using the name Edward Mason just makes me think of Twilight and that ruins everything... The only reason I kept reading after he was introduced was because I was almost done with the story.
At the end of the story the only thing I felt was that I was out of time and money.
This book was way too fast passed I would have love to have felt something for the H/h but with as fast as this book was I just couldn't! I wish it had been set over a longer period of time rather then like 3 weeks at most. Had a lot of potential but wasn't ............. Hum....... Can't find the word. It just needed more detail and more..... Just more of everything! I truly enjoyed the plot But other then the plot it had no wow factor. I give it 1 1/2 stars
Book cover 2★, the abs seems too much for my liking. Story line 1★ and it goes to the underground cage fighter.
The reason why I read this book because of the synopsis . Sound interesting since it mentions something about fighter and damage bad boy. I expect more trouble and action but well it's not really there.
The action is too little and I finish this book by browsing since I need to satisfy my quriosity.
I should have listened to the other reviews. But I didn't. I can usually tolerate fast-paced books, and this book appealed to me: strong guy saves girl. Heart-throb much? But this was ridiculous. There was no development. Also, what girl is so open about her near-rape? I mean, she was telling her boss in front of a dozen other people. If I had to tell my boss, I would bring him aside and do it quietly. And the guy! He JUST met her and he's telling her his life story? wtf?
Ok. 1 Star. I'll tell you why. The story didn't have that believable thing (for lack of a better word) I need to relate. This novel is so fast paced. She needed to slow it down. Build a relationship. Give me a basis as to why I'm about to get myself killed over a man a just met. Why I'm okay with it. Not my kind of novel at all!!!
I found it a little rushed and vague in some parts. The ending is good but its an open ending, leaving it hopefully open for another book?? Guy saves girl, girl fall's for guy instantly, he is an under ground fighter things go wrong and end up running so romantic, it just lacks that bit of something, it seems vague and rushed at times.
3.5 stars The beginning was not the best and a few times in the first few chapters I felt like I should DNF it but I'm glad I didn't. I started reading it against it having mixed reviews. It makes sense why some people would DNF it early on but once I got past the halfway mark, I really enjoyed it. It's not the most realistic at times but I was able to overlook it.
