I've always loved books, especially about monsters and magic, so I started writing. I'm working on a prequel and the next few books in the Others of Edenton series, and I have a head full of stories to share.
I'm a stay at home mother with a wonderful husband who lets me write and write to my hearts content.
*I received a copy of this set through the LoP group on Goodreads in exchange for an honest review*
There were a lot of reasons that I thought that I would love this series. There are strongly written heroines in each story, it has a variety of paranormal characters; werewolves, Fae, druids, and vampires are all featured in the stories. However, this wasn't a complete home run for me and I am chalking it up purely to a matter of my personal taste in the dynamics between heroines and their alphas. Rivers has developed an interesting world and the stories are well written and as a whole flowed fairly well and kept me as a reader following through each book relatively easily. Yet, I still wasn't able to love the alpha until the very last book in the set, Shadows of the Past.
The first book in this set is the prequel to In Too Deep. In New Beginnings we get to follow Jess's move to Edenton from San Francisco in order to escape her awful alpha, Gregory, and his self indulgent rule of her local pack. Jess is a werewolf with a difference, she also has psychic abilities that allow her to see snapshots of the future and they always happen. Jess walks into her new pack where there is already a volatile situation brewing between the alpha, Slater, his longtime friend and enforcer Liam, and Liam's jealousy of Brody, a newly made werewolf who has proven his strength and reliability to the pack. This story line makes for a good read except that I did not like Jess much at all. I like a strong and decisive female character, but the way that Jess is written seems to give her strength and the alphas made to seem weak. There's a difference between being assertive and aggressive and that's a distinction that I don't think was made for Jess's character. Maybe it's me and I just like my alpha characters to be stronger, less apologetic, and yes, maybe even have a little bit of arrogance to them. Slater has absolutely none of these characteristics. He capitulates way too much to Jess and what she deems appropriate. What Jess wants she must have even if it is not in her best interest. Jess holds the power in their relationship as it should be, but her overt aggressiveness just doesn't sit well with me and it definitely tainted my view of the story. The San Francisco alpha Gregory has got to be the most annoying and ridiculous alpha that I have ever read and wins the wuss of the paranormal world award for sure.
In In Too Deep we get the story of Brody and Fallon and true to form Rivers gives Fallon an over the top "I can take care of myself" personality. Why oh why can I not like these strong female characters that are being written? Why do they have to be strong at the expense of their alpha counter parts? I love the idea of Fallon being a Harley riding, druid tattoo artist, but does she have to be annoying too? I liked Brody and I loved the fact that he truly loved and mourned the wife that he lost, but again, the chemistry between me and the characters was not there and although the story is basically good there were some oddities that I did't quite get. Dacia seems like she will be an interesting addition, but some of the dialogue between her and Fallon is just odd. I understand opening up and being comfortable with someone, but jeez. Another irritant is that everyone had the need to say over and over again how hot and desirable Fallon is, I got it, and heaven knows she got it. I was irritated with the fact that Fallon held on to Isaac so fiercely and for so long despite what her best friend Jessie who is psychic told her. Sometimes stubborn and determined just shows up as stupid.
Shadows Fall is a very short prequel into Shadows of the Past and introduces us to Amethyst who is a water nymph moving to Edenton in order to get away from an overly enthusiastic Carl who wants nothing more in life than to possess her.
FINALLY! I enjoyed Shadows of the Past the most and again, this may speak mostly to my preference in characters. Hayden is a stronger alpha with a more overt sense of protectiveness when it comes to the women in his life. I like that he's unapologetic in his role as protector and leader. Amethyst is reeling from the suicide of Carl and her role in it and when the past impacts her in a dramatic way Hayden does not hesitate to do what needs to be done. And Preston! Oh, someone please come along to love and cherish this man! If you had asked me before this book if I would keep reading this series I would have said no, but if Preston gets his own book I may have to pick it up! I just hope his HEA doesn't involve an aggressive, smart mouthed woman looking to run all over him to get her way...
I will admit it took me longer than normal for me to get through this set and I had to prod myself to keep going, but I am glad that I did in the end. It's good to get different perspectives on how a strong female character is portrayed even if it's not one that follows exactly what you are normally attracted to.
I've fallen in love with the Others of Edenton! Here are my reviews of all 4 books!
~*~*~*~*~*~
New Beginnings
Great start to the Others of Edenton! I really enjoyed reading the start of this series. After reading In Too Deep (Others of Edenton #1) a couple months ago, it was interesting to see how the relationship between Slater and Jess developed. Even though you knew they were going to survive and make it - you were always looking for when the trouble would come! And now a little about the story...
Jess is a very strong woman, wolf and also happens to be a psychic. She has trouble with relationships because she always know what is going to go wrong before it does. Like in her current pack, she knew she was going to sleep with the scumbag alpha - but she still couldn't prevent it. After getting really drunk one night she wakes up in Gregory's bed. She can't stand Gregory and knows his attention will only get worse, so relying on an old friend she moves to a new pack. She has made one promise to herself - no more Alphas! So of course Slater, her new Alpha, has to be drop dead gorgeous and everything anyone would want in a man. Then her visions start with hot sex and Slater crying over her. Will she let her visions come true? She is resisting Slater, but also worried about him crying over her. She knows something bad is going to happen and she won't be able to prevent it. Give this book a try to see what happens!
Favorite passage: When she first saw the three ginormous men in her yard, she had been nervous. She expected Slater, but not the other two. Talk about your daily does of eye-candy.

In Too Deep
Good Paranormal Romance! This book is the first in the series of the Others of Edenton and introduced me to quite a few new paranormal characters. It is a full length novel and tells the story of a very strong woman how may have finally found the right man. Before she can move on she needs to battle a few past demons first. And now a bit about the story...
Fallon has just left Issac - a weretiger who got caught cheating - and physically crashes into Brody - a werewolf. Her motorcycle is trashed and Brody is injured. After healing him and killing the two vampires who were after him she is exhausted. Luckily she is close to Edenton where Brody is from and her best friend Jess lives. Jess is a psychic who knew she would be coming and has everything lined up for her to stay - a place to live, a job, a hunk of a wolf to fall for - everything she needs. Will Fallon fall for him though or is she in too deep with the troubles from her past? Give this book I try, I liked and I'm sure you will too!
Favorite Passage: Adam frowned. "I think you need to get her drunk so we might have to shot at winning a game." ... "Thank you." She drank half of her beer in a few gulps and gave Adam a look. "I only get better with alcohol."
I'm hoping book two is about Hayden and Dacia!

Shadows Fall
Fairy Struck! Loved it ;) Third book in the Others of Edenton series - Shadows Fall #1.5. Is a great lunch time read! Even without reading the first two books you could get a quick glimpse into the style and setting of the books. Lots of paranormal creatures (nymphs, mages, warlocks, vampires, werewolves, etc) in normal society governed by the Silver Council. And now a quick glimpse into the story...
Amethyst is over Carl, but she just can't get rid of him. He is stalking her, breaking into her house, anything to spend time with her and convince her to take him back. She could easily get him to leave using her powers, but she doesn't want to use him like that... what is she to do? Carl takes the problem out of her hands by reporting her to the Silver Council. She is "jailed" for several weeks before charges are dropped. Now she has to decide what to do next - how will she get rid of him? and what will she do next? Give this book a try to meet the purple haired fairy nymph who will star in the next book!
Favorite Passage: "...Are you two lovers?" She felt the blood rush to her face and knew she blushed furiously. "No. Definitely not. I'm too young." Amethyst signed, remembering her embarrassment when he told her that a decade before. "Besides, he was involved with my mother years before she had me. So that would be awkward."
Up next - Shadows of the Past - where we get the rest of Amethyst's story!

Shadows of the Past
Shadows Beware! Wonderful addition to the Others of Edenton! We get to meet more Edenton characters as we pick up right at the end of the Shadows Fall and Amethyst is driving into town. Dacia goes crazy again - imagine that . This story focus more on the the Fae characters. If you haven't given the Others a try yet - be sure to start at the beginning (with In Too Deep, book #1 or New Beginnings, book #0.5). And now a bit about this story...
We got to meet a VERY old Shadow Fae (Izackarus - Zack for short) as he tried to take form in Faerie and is temporarily defeated. Now he has been summoned to earth. As he reeks havoc on Earth he tracks Amethyst to Edenton, but he can't seem to cause as much trouble there. He does try hard though and as Amethyst gets caught speeding by a pissed off werewolf (Zack recently screwed his wife on the hood of a car and he caught them), she is cuffed and dragged into the police station. Cue Sheriff Eyeball (better known as Hayden) and Amethyst's cravings. But she is on a diet - after the mess with Carl, she can't get involved again - right? A few skinny dipping sessions for the nymph water faerie later and she is ready to change her mind...
Give the Others of Edenton a try and see how Amethyst gets out of this mess and what all the "Others" are up to!
Favorite passages: - Part of her was scared, but the other part wanted to climb him like a jungle gym and play. - “You’re a goddess, Amethyst. I’m not sure I can live without this.”
In Too Deep Wow, what a ride! Rivers takes the best elements of paranormal- fun abilities, mysterious characters- and manages to make them shine brighter than ever before! Fallon is a heroine you can get behind; she has just the right balance of sexiness, danger, and coolness, and you're rooting for her the entire time. Brody is the perfect match for her (and for all of us...am I right, ladies??), and his protectiveness will strike a chord in every woman whose pulse skips a beat when their man comes to their defense. With a fantastic supporting cast, Rivers manages to bring us deeper into the world of Edenton, and give us enough to get our heart racing and whet our appetite for more. A fantastic debut novel....and I, for one, cannot wait to get my hands on New Beginnings!
New Beginnings Well, Brandy Rivers has done it again. New Beginnings is every bit (if not more) as engaging as In Too Deep, with vivid, unique, and relatable characters. Oh, and sex. Werewolves, psychics, and sex. Oh my!
A pattern I noticed across both of her books, is her gift at opening a story. In both Deep and Beginnings, I found myself instantly pulled into the story, and the characters. Not all writers can do this effectively, but Rivers nails it.
As the hero of the book, Slater is easy to fall in love with. He has a strong moral code, is good to his pack and also to those outside it, and is immensely loyal. He immediately takes to Jess and the connection is instantaneous. Despite both of their reservations, they are drawn further together as they realize that they are meant for each other, no matter what their rules for themselves are.
I sometimes found myself frustrated with Jess for being so emotional, but then I realized my frustration is based on the fact that everyone, including me, has felt like she has at one point. Overwhelmed, afraid, yet trying to be strong and face her situation bravely.
It was nice to see familiar faces from In Too Deep take a more forefront role in Beginnings. Also, characters like Victoria (the "just for sex" friend of Slater; a role that can often be one-note or cliche) really add some fun dimension. In fact, I found myself wanting a book just about Victoria!
Rivers also gives readers a snapshot from In Too Deep (her first novel), and Shadows of the Past (her next novel). She estimates November for the third book, and I can't wait to read it!
Shadows Fall Amethyst Lakes is a nymph with a problem. She left her ex-boyfriend when he started to smother her. Nothing she says seems to keep him away. Carl needs Amethyst more than he needs to breathe, but she just doesn’t get it. He’ll stop at nothing to make her stay. An old friend and teenage crush will keep her safe until Amethyst can decide how to deal with Carl once and for all.
A pretty little nymph, crazy stalker ex, a cocky mage, and a whole lot of trouble.
Shadows of the Past Haunted by memories of her past, Amethyst Lakes left her home to come to Edenton. She was ready to start a new life on her own after being stalked relentlessly.
Hayden Hunter is too busy being Sheriff to take interest in a woman. That is until his officer drags Amethyst into his life. For the first time he wants to protect and claim.
There’s instant attraction between the two, but Amethyst isn’t ready for anyone since she found out her ex killed himself after she sent him away for good.
Preston has always protected Amethyst, and when he finds out something of legend and nightmares is coming for her, he’ll do everything he can to keep her safe.
Amethyst is either the catalyst to bring nightmares fully into this realm, or the one to end them. Can she find the power to stop the darkness, or will she wind up its prey?
Can't wait for the series to continue! Pretty little nymph, suspicious but sexy earth fae, cocky mage, and a nightmare of old.
New Beginnings 5 Stars After being introduced to some of the Edenton Others in Nights Embrace I wanted to know more about them.
I liked Jess, she’s quite snarky and standoffish but if you got visions of the future when you touched people and knew that you were going to be resented for trying to help people by sharing what you’d seen, after awhile I think you might be like her to. Slater was very sexy and unlike other reviews I didn’t think it made him Un-alpha like to be sensitive and caring about the woman who was destined to be his mate. I can’t wait for Brody and Fallons story.
What I didn’t like was Gregory, I do think he wouldn’t have been Alpha for long if he was as much of a wuss as he was portrayed after the scene in the bar. Guess he could have had a mental breakdown?
In Too Deep 5 Stars I loved this story, having read all of the books in the series before writing this review I can say that Fallon is my favorite character, this woman can seriously kick butt and take names. I really liked Brody in New Beginnings and we got to know him so much better in this one. He comes across as the perfect mix of strong and caring and I love how he loves Fallon. For me Brody is all Alpha, it's a good thing he doesn't want Slater's position. The sex scenes are hot!
Each story has someone we have to hate and in this story it's Isaac, total scum. The suspense is ratcheted up in this installment in the series and we get introduced to a lot of new characters. I love all the different kinds of "Others" and the different magic that they use. A truly magical assortment of good and evil, and a few that fall somewhere in between.
Shadows Fall 5 Stars I really enjoyed this short Novellette leading up to Shadows of the Past, Amethyst has a stalker and no easy way to get rid of him. This book also introduces us to more of the Silver Council and the corruption that's always a danger when people in power think they're more important than the people they are supposed to oversee. I can't wait to read more about Amethyst and what happens to her when she gets to Edenton.
Shadows of the Past 5 Stars As the the stories build upon each other and we get to know the characters in more depth, I just find myself completely hooked by this world. I loved the idea of Amethyst and Hayden and in this story we got to have a ring side seat in their journey to finding each other. Each story has some evil element that the citizens of Edenton must overcome, and it seems as though in each book they just get creepier and darker than the one that came before. However since the good people just keep getting stronger and their abilities more diverse I found myself waiting with baited breath to see how the would prevail this time.
Brandy L Rivers has delivered an amazing box set of her Others of Edenton series. This first installment of the series takes readers through the first four stories – New Beginnings, In Too Deep, Shadows Fall and Shadows of the Past.
New Beginnings give us just that – a new beginning. The tale of Jess and Slater delivers readers to the amazing world of others that reside in Edenton, Washington. It delivers a simple introduction into the world with the wolf shifters Slater leads and the characters that reside in their pasts and present Edenton.
Rivers’ series is fast becoming one of my favorite paranormal series. Yes, her novels include magic, wolves, shape-shifters, nymphs and vampires but it is her ability to make the fantastic world her characters live in relatable that makes her one of my Must Read authors.
It's one thing to write something fantastic and keep everything in the realm of the mystical/magical - floating along without ever having your feet touch the ground. It takes another kind of talent to immerse your readers in that mystical/magical world but keep them tethered in "real world" at the same time.
When her characters find their mates it's not always sunshine and roses - in all honesty I don't think a single one of her characters has just happily settled into the role of mate without some instance of hesitation/resistance. This makes for a series made up of characters I want to get to know. If these men and women would just easily accept what life hands them, the stories would be over way too quickly and wouldn't be worth the time to read them.
Brandy Rivers keeps bringing my heart back to her lovely little town of Edenton and her characters make me want to never leave. This small town full of big hearts will make you want to come back again and again.
I was given this to write a honest review for the group lovers of the paranormal on goodreads. I requested this book 'others of edenton' as and extra, the read and review was for book 4 'breaking free'. When I opened it up and saw 677 pages, I thought OMG! what if I hate it and find it boring, how will I read this as well as the 2 other books? Well let me say right now it was FANTASTIC! !!!!! I just loved the way the books all of the fit so well with each other. The books in this box set are about different characters, the author has written each book in a way that you get to continue seeing each of the characters throughout all the books! Which was great because I loved all the individual characters. They were all so different and appealing. I have got to say my favourite character was Fallon, her character was just brilliant, strong but a sense of vulnerability, feisty, funny and a bad ass lol This author did an amazing job, she has a true talent for writing! I could spend paragraphs and paragraphs talking about all the people you meet in these books and their stories, but why do that because if you love your paranormal books there is NO WAY you can pass this series up!!! Bring on Falling into place book three :)))
What an addicting series! I couldn't put it down after I read the first book. I craved what the pages were going to unfold. I enjoyed the characters while each strong they still were vulnerable. They had different and bold personalities with great back story.
Each book builds from the previous one. You continue to see more of past characters and learn where they are now. I liked that a lot about this series. Brandy gave us what we loved from the first - through the end without missing a beat.
The stories are fast paced. You dive further and further into this supernatural world and your brain aches for more. I loved Hayden from the first book. When I got to read his story I knew why I felt he would be my favorite. I'm a sucker for the grumpy, scruffy bad boy who's-not-actually-bad. Aha.
Seriously though such a great read! Thank you Brandy for allowing me the chance to review this series. I am hooked on your writing and cannot wait to read more from you in the future. I super duper recommend this series if you like paranormal romances with edgy leads.
Straight to a negative – this book left me wanting more and although I’ve searched and searched I am unable to read more from this series at this time…..
A wonderfully entertaining box-set with books that contain characters that will entice you, the reader, to keep reading their stories until you smile and move to the next. Each individual book tells a story that interconnects with the previous ones, meaning that you are able to keep track of the characters you meet in each book as background characters in the next. I love the thread of the books, the intrigue of each book and the flow of the books. I found myself unable to put the set down and linked my Kindle to my mobile so I was able to read this set at every opportunity.
I will certainly be looking for more of this series as well as other novels that are by Brandy L Rivers. WONDERFUL.
"Received this set in exchange for an honest review from LoP (Lovers of Paranormal) group" For the most part I enjoyed these books, although they were a little hard to follow sometimes and I got lost. I did like that the female characters were strong and stood up for themselves, but I'm afraid I'm not a huge fan of the "insta love" that seemed to take place. It seemed to me that with the female characters they went from one extreme to the next when it came down to how they portrayed their feelings, and that was a little hard to deal with. I did like the fact that there were different kinds of characters in these stories, and not just wolves. That made it a little more interesting. All in all I appreciate the opportunity to read these, and if you are a fan of paranormal give them a try!
"I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads."
I shall update my reviews as I read each book in the set.
This is a sassy, steamy werewolf tale, that brings together a good sized cast for future adventures. The variety of 'talents' in paranormal tales enables writers to be inventive - here it is done well, and fits the story. Good entertaining read.
I'm looking forward to the next in the series - already the predictions have given me some clues!
I enjoyed this boxed set. I had found the fist book in the series for free and read it at the suggestion of one of my goodreads friends. I have to say if you like a good paranormal read with characters and real situations and snark, this is for you. The world that this builds is a mirror version of a ours where there are fighting rings and bad guys, but they are just supernatural in this world that Brandy L Rivers builds. I have not read the one book that is included in this series, but plan to.
I received this book as a gift in exchange for a honest review. I loved the books, The characters were well developed and I was hooked from the first page!! I will be recommending this book to family and friends
NEW BEGINNINGS: I loved Slater even before meeting Jess he could feel something there for her with just hearing her voice on the phone, "one, he never disrespected women, but Gregory was notorious for treating women like second class citizens. Two, the thought of this unknown woman with Gregory did not sit well with him at all." You know Jess has him all in a frenzy, "not like that." He scratched his beard while trying to figure out how to dig his way out of that hole. "I like to get to know my wolves. I don't date them. I just thought we both have to eat, and we are heading in the same direction." Jess is changing our alpha and I love it when a female can do that, "I could easily forget what I swore off all those years ago, for you." He squeezed his eyes shut and turned away. "Eff, I didn't mean to say that out loud." Jess is bossy in the bedroom got to love a woman who knows what she wants, "next time. now shut the hell up and eff me like you mean it." Slater is a protective sort, "yes, I'm her new Alpha. You'll be challenging me if you're stupid enough to come all the way up here with that bulls*** claim. So you best remember that." I'm telling you what these are the two horniest wolves I have met I blame it on Slater, "oh for the love of God, Slater." She side eyed him. "Stop watching me like you want to bend me over the nearest surface and take me all over again. We did that ten minutes ago."
IN TOO DEEP: I loved this book. I loved Brody. I loved Fallon. I just plain loved all the damn characters! The story is told from different point of views and I have to say I loved Brody's the most, "she was absolutely stunning, had attitude up the wazoo, and brass balls the size of a semi." I mean I loved his thoughts, "...hoped like hell the underwear would hold down his junk. If that didn't kill his persistent boner, he wasn't sure what would." He's just sex on two legs, "I feel like I've been waiting an awful long time for you, sugar. If I change my mind, I'll tell you. But you're going to have to stop me if I go too far." Fallon that girl is fearless and really does have balls, "after I finished the blade, he took my free hand, and put it on his di**. I took the same mana-blade I just finished and stabbed him in the leg, about two inches from his balls." Brody has a scary side and it includes when Fallon is hurt and he's protective and possessive, "Brody, stopped growling. You scared the hell out of Dakota." I'm ready for the next installment in the series!
SHADOWS FALL: Yep it's no secret that half the time I don't read a series in order so why should this time be different. Although this gives us a little background info on how Ame came to Edenton and is really short I always think background information is important it allows us to get a better feel for our characters and the story that's about to come so of course I would say READ THIS! Carl I didn't like him from the beginning, "the ugly smirk on his face faded into a mask of pain. She almost felt bad, but she knew he would smother her if she let him stay. He wanted to control her, to dictate every detail of her life. The only way to stop that from happening was to get rid of him." Sweet Lord in Heaven I love me some Preston, "no, Jarvis. She won't do as you ask because you've been reassigned." Preston Snarled." You go boy! He's a loving guy, and caring, "anger darkened his eyes. "I'll find out what I can." When he looked down, his expression softened. "You're okay though? Nothing happened that shouldn't have?"
SHADOWS OF THE PAST: Um.. yeah the cover I know two scenes where that bad boy takes place (winks) anywho you can't help but fall in love with Ame the girl is just so easygoing, "I'm fine. Can I get a Guinness and something fruity but packs a punch? Not enough to get drunk - I just want a little buzz." She sighed, and took a deep breath to slow herself down. "I don't need to be pulled over again, and it seems Sheriff Eyeball over there has decided to keep an eye on me." Hayden is starting to get violent tendencies especially where Ame is concerned, "still, Hayden wanted to clock the pervy ba***** for even thinking about Amethyst." We also discover the boy has a kinky side, and Ame knows his little secret but isn't letting on (good let the boy sweat for awhile,) "I went for a swim, naked. He watched, but he was hiding. He doesn't know I know, but I kind of got off on it." And ladies we shouldn't doubt Hayden's mad bedroom skills take is from Ame the boy knows what he's doing, "he pulled my hips up and drove it home like we could become one, and I think we sort of did for awhile." Amethyst blushed." Although I loved Ame and Hayden, Jess and Slater still hold my heart in this series.
New Beginnings - Jess was totally tired of being under an Alpha that did not appreciate her or the work she did at the bar, she wanted to buy it, but her Alpha had other ideas. So she took a chance and moved to Edenton. Now Slater is her new Alpha and he is also the one that sold her the local bar. Well even though she promised herself to never ever be involved with her Alpha and he made him self the same promise never to mess with his wolves. Things turn around as she and Slater seem to grow closer and closer. There is a power play here were the crazy second wants the place and wants to be Alpha. Will things work out for Jess and Slater, will they defeat what is to come. In Too Deep - Fallon is a fantastic tattoo artist with inherent magic, she is tired of men and their games, she climbs she climbs onto her Harley and leaves her old life behind. Brody is a talented motorcycle mechanic and werewolf stuck in his painful past. It’s just another depressing night as he tries to stop thinking about what he lost, that is until two vampires attack him. Believing he killed them he runs into the night only to collide with Fallon. until he’s attacked by vampires. Thinking he killed them, he runs into the night and crashes into Fallon. Sparks fly, when he looks at Fallon, and that is when things start going funny. Both are fighting what they feel and also fighting those who want to take over the town. Shadows Fall - Amethyst is a nymph with a big problem, she has left her boyfriend when he started to try and control her, Carl needs her more then the needs to breath, and according to him she does not understand his needs. He will do anything that he can to make her stay. Someone she knew a long time ago and had a crush on will do anything to keep her safe. As she is finally released she knows the needs to get rid of Carl and leave this town. Shadows of the Past - Amethyst is a nymph that regrets many things that have happened, But deciding to start a new she moves to Edenton where her Friends are, hoping for a new start. As she arrives things do not go to well, including the fact that Hayden is a suspicious Sheriff who hasn't been interested in women in ages. Ha but as he sets his eyes on Amethyst as he sees one of his Officers drag her in. To add to this story besides all the characters in the other stories is an old Fae nightmare that is after her, as he needs to take his old form. Hayden will stop at nothing to protect her yet this little nymph might be the only thing that can stop the Shadow. The stories were great and connected to one another, the characters were ones that you come to care for and hope they succeed, well written and fun to read.
Very Good series. I like how Rivers incorporates all the characters into her books. It is not only a book about the main character, but about everyone in town. It is not about person A or B and their story, it is everyone's story who lives there because the town is mostly people who are magically inclined and are connected by some way or another. A person knows a person who knows a person living in San Francisco. There are other magical beings besides the usual wolf or vampire. Instead of various councils for different groups, there is one council and situations are dealt with accordingly. No one likes the council though because they think they are better than the rest. I did not like that the main female characters run from San Francisco to Edenton because of the bad situations with men. Still good, but I felt it was repetitive. Situations are different, but they are still running away to get out of it. I hope that Dacia finds someone for her instead of having crushes on men that do not want her. She redeems herself somewhat, but it would nice for her to find someone to call her own. The people she knows are with someone, so maybe a stranger passes through town in later books and falls in love with her. It would be nice.
The Others of Edenton series by Brandy L. Rivers is an amazing collection of stories that encompasses all the paranormal beings who live and work in Edenton. Good versus evil is portrayed in all the books in the series. The amount of detail in her character development will blow your mind. It gives credence to her storyline because her characters are so real and likeable. You never lose your place as event after event flows through each standalone book. Every book can be read as a standalone but I recommend reading them in order. Volume 1 consists of 4 separate books each with the main characters finding the other and how they each obtain their own HEA ending. The strong writing and character development and storyline make it easy to read one been after another. I couldn't but this volume down until I had finished the last page. I will definitely be reading more of this authors work and I will recommend her work to anyone who loves paranormal love stories.
Despite multiple copy-edit errors, I really like this bundle which contains a novella, two novels and what feels more like a short story than a novella.
What do I like? The heroines have massive agency; the sexytimes are abundant, non-judgmental and extremely matter-of-fact; and the male and female leads TALK to each other so if there is any kind of misunderstanding it generally gets resolved damn quickly. There is an extended "family" within the town, and the core group of Others that we see support each other with their complementary skills and talents. The women from story to story are friends and are around to lend an ear or poke at each other. Oh, and each woman is a complete badass: Jess is a psychic werewolf, Fallon is a druid, and Amethyst is a nymph (she gets the "short story" and a novel). Every one of them can take care of herself and it doesn't take the heroes long to figure that out, and let them do their thing.
Here's how much I enjoyed the series: I bought the second volume at 10 p.m. last night, and forced myself to go to sleep at 3:30 a.m. this morning.
I am bailing out after the prequel. It wasn't a disaster. It wasn't bad in any really objectionable sense. It was just that Jess annoyed me. I understand that there is a role in paranormal romance fiction for ballsy gals, but in this case it was more a case of 'irrationally angry' than 'strong'.
Jeez woman, wait until the man has actually finished his sentence/train of thought/explanation before you get all pissy and screech things at his face out and walk out. Chill. You might have had more sex earlier had you listened more than you assumed for half the book!
I read romance fiction because I am interested in relationships, not arguments. And the thought that her best pal Fallon might be the same sort of shout first/ask questions later sort of 'strong' has me moving on to something a bit less fraught for my bedtime reading...
I really enjoyed these stories of a mixed bag of paranormals in the town of Edenton. The storylines are interesting. the characters are ones the reader can easily grow invested in. The secondary characters are well developed. The stories are entertaining.
My only complaints...there is a lot of build up to each crisis moment and then those are anti-climatic, especially in the last story. I was like, wow, that's it?!?! Also, a lot of the attributes and actions and behaviors attributed to the characters are quite different from existing, accepted paranormal mythology that it's jarring. While I get that it's fiction there are generally accepted parameters for most genres and it takes my head out of a story if things don't fit. And I never like having my head taken out of a story.
So not impressed with this book; its stupid. The main character Jess is a stuck up brat bitch who wants things her way always. She gets to be dominate of everything and she won't let no one tell her no. Now, her new Alpha "Slater" is a fucking PUSSY but yet there somewhat equal???? Ya no... Slater felt protective of her (like normal mated males are) but she wasn't having it so she held a grudge for 2 months and wouldn't talk to him??? It's so weird for me to see Slater give her power over him. In my sence of it, it was God awful I didn't even finish it (It all sucked). Slater's second was a schizophrenic nut job! Who wanted to take Slaters place, and he had a vampire booty call on the side?.. You know what, I don't want to waste anymore time writing this review. Just save yourself a headache.
Hmm, so so. Has potential, but most of it missed the mark for me. I felt like I was reading novellas or excerpts from a previous series, but I think it was more likely that the 'world' is full in the authors head and she didn't realise bits were missing for those of us who don't gave that insight. That left it all very rushed and jumpy. If the next bundle was under $5, I might have given it a go cause some of the characters aren't bad, but it's far too expensive for what it is. Plus, I had a peek at the blurbs... I just can't get my head around Preston's love match or a few of the others ftm.
Book 0.5- New beginings This was a great book to set up a foundation for the rest in the series to follow. It was also a great standalone book with decent characters that dragged the reader into the book and into the story.
The two main characters are Jess and Slater, Jess a werewolf desperate to escape her ass of an alpha and Slater the Alpha she runs to. The two feel a bond towards each other and although they try to deny it soon enough they can’t stay away from each other. With the looming threat of a deranged member of the pack looking to become Alpha by killing Slater and putting Jess at risk the two become inseparable. The two characters are unlike characters in other books I’ve been reading as neither one of them are looking for love.
The secondary characters include Brody, Victoria and Gregory while there are lots of other characters these are the ones I found most noteworthy in this book. Brody is a higher up member of the pack and practically Slater’s right hand man, he is also a great friend to Jess as she gets settled in her new life at Edenton. Victoria is Slater’s vampire lover, she is the person who has been there for Slater forever and is still happy enough to advise Slater to go after Jess. Gregory is Jess’s old alpha the one who she is so desperate to get away from that she moves to Edenton.
The storyline and pacing while similar to other books I’ve read from the paranormal genre however it did have the big difference of being inclusive of other paranormal species, not just werewolves. I think the inclusion of these characters will be a big feature of the books as it gives the series more than one path that can be taken. I also liked that there was a slight twist at the end that I didn’t see coming.
I would give this book a 4.5 star rating and I think I read it at just the right time when I needed a break from other types of books. On to book 2; In Too Deep
Book 1- In too deep This book had a lot more going on than the first one; there were many levels and new challenges that the characters have to face.
The book is focused on Fallon and Brody; characters we were first introduced to in ‘New Beginings’. Fallon is a very tattooed friend of Jess, after a bad break up with her boyfriend she decides to move to the town Edenton with Jess. There she finds Brody, a good friend of Jess and a character we know quite well from the previous book. Brody is a man grieving the death of his wife until he meets Fallon after that Fallon pretty much consumes his every thought and wish. Pretty soon, the two characters get together however with a vampire gang causing a menace of themselves Brody and Fallon will have to put up a fight to stay together.
There are lots of secondary characters in this book but since I think a lot of them mentioned in this book are going to have a book based on them later in the series I am just going to wait until I read deeper into them in their own books.
The storyline was very imaginative and I liked how the author brought in the ancient feud between vampires and werewolves to cause a problem between the two main characters. The pacing was excellent introducing the characters well and giving them sufficient time to get to know each other and fall in love before making them a proper couple and adding in the next problem in their relationship.
4 stars a really good book
Book 1.5- Shadows fall This was a fun and quick read about a character I would very much like to read more on and who I expect will come up in other books in this series.
The main character is Amethyst, she is a nymph with a difficult ex boyfriend who just does not seem to want to give her up and is causing problems in her life. She is on the brink of deciding whether or not to move to Edenton to get away from her problems.
There were some secondary characters however I think they will be expanded on in their own books.
The storyline and pacing were good keeping readers hooked from the very first page. I found the storyline to be refreshing and simplistic, possibly leading up to the next book in the series but still enjoyable. The pacing was very fitting to such a short book and it allowed readers to gain a true interest in the characters.
4.5 star stars, a really good quick read.
Book 2- Shadows of the past This book has expanded an already wide universe massively and I think I am beginning to fall in love with the town the series is set around. I do wonder however just how many people the author can fit in one place. In this book I also began to feel bad for one of the secondary characters who as of yet do not have a book based upon them.
This book expands on the character in the previous book Amethyst and an existing member of the town members, Hayden. It is practically a follow on from the book ‘Shadows Fall’ as it picks up from the predicament Amethyst is facing at the end of the book. In this book however she meets Hayden a police officer from Edenton who intrigues her instantly and the two become involved; with a new risk being brought to this small town it challenges the new relationship between Amethyst and Hayden.
The secondary characters in this book are again similar to in the rest of the series and I think some of them will have books based on them; however I do want to note that in this book I felt bad for Dacia and Clint and I seriously think they either need to find their mates soon or get together.
The pacing and storyline were great; the storyline was brilliantly original and the pacing kept me interested until the very last page.
I gave this read five stars because I absolutely loved how I felt like I was there with all the descriptions of people, places, things, feelings.. All of it. I loved how each story blended with the next but still each novel could be read as a standalone. The characters are so uniquely different, and each book captures how different each one is in their own special way. I can't wait to dig into volume two because I couldn't put this down.
Well, I quit this box set before I finished up the last 2 books (book and a half more like). The reason is because the books were just too violent for me. There were vicious, violent, graphic fights; and attempted rapes. The violence in the books was dark, evil, vicious violence; and in every books, there was some unhinged dipwad obsessed with the main character woman. The setting, the characters were good, but the books consisted of violence and sex scenes. I got fed up with that and quit.
I love shifter stories, and I'm thrilled when I find a series that fills that need. Others of Edenton Volume I is a great start in getting to know all of the different characters that make up this world. Hot, steamy alphas falling for snarky, independent women is always a plus. I enjoyed this group of novels and look forward to reading more of Ms. Rivers' work.
This is the type of book I've been looking for. It has everything in it from wereanimals to mages and shadow walkers. It was amazing and I can't wait to read the next one.
You will fall in love with the characters. You will get wrapped up in their lives and get freedom from yours. What all great books should do. The love, the action, and the sex is awesome. You will be consumed with the magic. Good vs evil.
LOTS OF CHARACTERS, AS THE BOOKS GO ON, MORE ARE ADDED TO THE MIX. BY THE LAST READ, I FOUND IT HARD TO FOLLOW WHO WAS DOING WHAT WITH/FOR WHO ! TOO MUCH FOCUS ON SEX ETC, NOT ENOUGH STORY CONTENT......
