This is the second in the Cockburn series. It continues the narrative of Cockburn's career in chronological sequence, and it keeps the strengths of the previous book in that it's fast moving and shows something almost like the historical campaign in the Levant. There is plenty of high seas, or at least littoral, naval action where ships are captured or damaged and sent into port as prizes. Also, there's quite a lot of action on land as Mr. Welbeloved, an American frontiersman and marksman, marshals a picked crew of commandos and adopts a group of Turkish bandits to conduct very irregular operations against the French. The description of the Turkish culture and high ranking officers is doubtless drawn from history and they are rather amazing. While I'm wavering in my belief that the Turkish Navy of the time really increased the 'tween deck heights on their warships to allow room for the officers' turbans, it's certainly an amusing thing to imagine.
It is historical fact that Napoleon, after losing his fleet at the Nile, still had a sizeable army, about 10,000 troops. Being cut off from resupply, one would think this army could only make a little trouble for the Allies by fortifying their positions in Egypt and holding it for a substantial time, using the seas and deserts surrounding it as its defenses. Well, anyone familiar with Napoleon's character would know that he wouldn't just assume a defensive posture. In fact, he crosses the Sinai and marches north along the coast. Exactly what he hoped to accomplish with this move I'm not sure. The author has minimal discussion of this among his characters, but certainly, 10,000 men couldn't accomplish much against the Ottoman Empire, especially not with England helping the Turks. Nevertheless, the Turks were not ready for this invasion, and they needed a British squadron to stop its advance after some spectacular sieges. Commodore Sir Sidney Smith, a historical figure, appears as the commanding officer of this squadron. His activity seems mostly authentic. Admiral Lord Nelson and Lord Keith also have bit parts, so many of the characters are real people.
My only criticism of this book is that there's a gap in the action when Capt. Cockburn sails to Sicily for repairs. While quite a bit of intrigue happens on Sicily, the transition from the naval action and the events on shore seemed slightly abrupt. However, an entertaining story and it seems like it's only slightly fictionalized. A good read and it'll teach you all about the events that happened after the battle of the Nile.

This second book in the series has our hero captain Cockburn in a small frigate on his way into the east of the Mediterranean with orders to Rhodes. A few changes later and he's sent instead to assist Sir Sidney Smith in defense of Acre against Napoleon's former Egyptian army displaced after the Battle of the Nile.
Smith is historically known to be brilliant, talented, and driven, but eccentric, egotistical, and vain. In this book he's a prickly selfish jerk but skilled. The bulk of the book is based on a vague outline of historical events with a great deal of fantasy involved. Yet again the recently defeated French navy locked in by blockades has a huge fleet available to them, and many ships in the Med, when they were all but swept from the sea in real life at the time.
Also, Cockburn is given a full captain's rank by the end of the book after sleeping with two different beautiful noblewomen, a child resulting from each, despite having been made commander only a scant year before. There is an early commando army formed by the American loyalist lieutenant as well and its a bit fantastical but generally entertaining.

very good adventure Bonaparte moves on Syria, and needs to be stopped.
A good read, plenty of good moments in the fighting age of sail.
Characters continue to expand as they take on new challenges.
From a siege at Arce , recapturing islands in the Adriatic, sailing off Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean… a good sailor book.

easy and entertaining read
I like to have an entertaining story to read when exercising on my stationery cycle. Something not too heavy, but still substantive. I operated Navy Destroyers in the areas of the Mediterranean described herein and sailed on the Academy team, crewing on a 100’ Schooner named Freedom. It was fun figuring out the tactics described. Has a feel good story too!

A great continuing saga of the Fighting Cocks.
The author has created a rollicking good trilogy of nineteenth century seafaring adventures with the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean and environs. Lovable and interesting characters. A history lesson too.

Very Good Story
This continuing story of Cockburn and Wellbeloved is a great nautical fiction story. The battles and nautical references are accurate and exciting. The writing is well-written. The characters are realistic and interesting.
