I didn't know what to expect when I downloaded this book. The name drew me at first, then the descriiption...enough to get it.

I'd say it was a page-turner, but on a Kindle, that's kind of a misnomer. Let's just say, I couldn't wait until it was time to start reading again, and I hated to put it down. I was fascinated from the beginning. Here was a man who had so much against him....yet didn't let it stop him from doing what he needed to do. It didn't matter that
he had absolutely no help, no friends, absolutely nothing. His brother and sister-in-law were missing, no one was talking, he was accused of cattle rustling, his (actually his missing brother's) cabin was burned down, the woman he fell in love with was gunned down (in his stead). I was fascinated. It was fast moving and kept you wondering what was going to occur next.

I've never read any of Zack Mason's books before, but I intend to look at some and see if they'll interest me as much as this one. He's a great author.

When Jake gets a letter from his sister-in-law Jessica saying his brother Ben has mysteriously disappeared he immediately travels to their ranch to find out what has happened. Sadly when he gets there neither of them are to be found and the ranch has been completely abandoned with no animals anywhere.

The townspeople of Cottonwood don't welcome him with open arms and when he shoots dead a man in a drunken rage is sentenced to hang.

This is where the story really gets interesting as he isn't hung and following this has many life-changing experiences which make him question his relationship with God.

This book features many Christian allegories such as redemption and is filled with many twists and turns until the end. It continued to surprise me on every page and I found myself routing for Jake even when yet again he messes things up.

Don't be put off by being a western as this is a real page-turning thriller.

Fun read but not good literature. Odd "Christian" theme innocent man dreams he should be hanged for the guilty Jake, town council dream they should hang innocent and free Jake, Indian chief says Great Spirit telling Jake to go to red mesa where Jake encounters God over 4-day period. Good plot twist on who is actually responsible for rustling and trying to grab Talbot/Halfbreed land.

Excellent story with lots of twists. In addition to the entertainment value, it does an excellent job of delivering the message of substitutionary sacrifice and and redemption. Definitely worth the read.
