When Jake Tempest hears of jobs going buikding railway lines, he is drawn to Whernside in the Yorkshire countryside, and the mountain through which the tunnel is being carved. Beth Seymour is the one thing that lightens his harsh new life - but she has a husband and is trapped in an increasingly loveless marriage.
This story is a little bit predictable, but it is still a good read. The characters were well developed and likeable. Jake Tempest has feelings for Beth who is teaching him to read. But Beth is already married. There is a lot going on in this book as we learn about the building of the viaduct.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #RandomHouseUK #TransworldPublishers and the author #ElviRhodes for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Mountain by Elvi Rhodes is an interesting book. I have read other books by her but this one surpasses all. I enjoyed it from page one.
So many characters but Jake and Beth are my favourites. Mrs Drake, Sally Roland and Patrick although secondary characters were part of my favourites characters. Let’s not forget about grumpy ill tempered Will. Ugh!
I love how Beth enjoys reading and has a passion for teaching children. I am a teacher and I was impressed by her enthusiasm and eagerness towards knowledge.
This book is fit for a movie! It deserves 5 stars from me.
I enjoyed this book so much. I read it within two days.
Whenever I read a book, I try to find the story behind the book title and I got a perfect plot behind the name “The Mountain“.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are mine.
I love Elvi Rhodes! SAhe is from England and writes very english. It brings back suce good memories of being there. She is very clean. No sex, swearing and romance writer. All of her books I have enjoyed.
Not my genre - full of romance clichés and some two dimensional characters. However it was based around the building of the Ribblehead viaduct and tunnel for the Settle to Carlisle railway line which is an area I know very well. Fascinating to understand the life of the lowly people who worked on such an amazing feat of engineering in the 1800s.
Marvellous story where Jake Tempest leaves the canals and moves to Skipton with his mother shortly before she died. Mrs Tempest had bought a painting, this was Jake’s one personal possession which he carried when seeking work. Soon, when meeting Mr Armatage he discovers the mountain exists and aims there to find work. He works in the tunnel for the new railway and his landlady Beth, becomes his image of the perfect woman. She is married, her husband demanding. His painting is displayed and he finds comfort in the new towns of the workers. There’s physical challenge in travel with climate and terrain, infection from
I really enjoyed reading this little tale of old Yorkshire. A touch of nostalgia and evoked memories of my time there. Quite eerie reading about the smallpox pandemic...talk of quarantine and isolation...sign of the times in today's world.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. I read this book many years ago and had forgotten how good it was. Great storyline and great characters, thoroughly enjoyed it. This author never fails to impress me.
Historical drama set in Cumbria around the building of the Carlisle to Settle railway and the famous viaduct. The characters were great and the story interesting.
Jake Tempest meets Beth Seymour when he comes to Whernside to work at the construction of the railway lines. Beth Seymour is married to William, but her relationship with her husband is more and more difficult, and abusive. Jake tempest is drawn to Beth... She teaches him to read and start a school for the children in her town. After a series of events they relationship strenghten and a new opportunity come for them to start a new life.
The story is really captivating, there are a lot of things happening in this book... Jake Tempest's life took a turn at Whernside Beth really do her best in her circumstances to deal with her husband's mood swings... She has a desire to teach others and could see the talent in her pupils, she is really gifted with children. I like her character she is kind, helpful and strong..
Really enjoyed this book as a Yorkshire lass born and bred. Having seen the viaduct many times and taken the steam train over it was so interesting to learn how it was built
I didn't think I would enjoy this book, but I did. It's a book that my Mum bought and gravitated to my bookshelf. Thought I'd give it a go before releasing it.
There are two novels in one volume here.
THE MOUNTAIN is the better of the two, in my opinion. It's the story of Jake Tempest (should have been in an American Spy thriller!), who finds work building a railway and falls in love with a married woman. It's predictable, but we all like happy endings, and occasionally obstacles are removed a bit too easily. However, it was a good read and passed away a few rainy evenings.
OPAL is also well written and not quite so predictable. However, I really couldn't warm to Opal, the heroine of the story. Although it was kind of the point, she deserved and caused everything that happened to her, and (without giving it away), I thought she was very, very fortunate that the author also likes happy endings.
