About the author

Catrin Collier is Wales' most prolific and well-known author of historical, romantic fictions. The daughter of a Prussian refugee and Welsh father, she grew up in Pontypridd. Her first historical novel Hearts of Gold, was filmed as a mini-series by the BBC in 2003. Her crime book, By Any Name, written as Katherine John was filmed by Tanabi and released on Amazon Prime in 2017. She lives with her family on the Gower Peninsula, near Swansea. I've owned a copy of A silver lining for some time.

I'm going to be completely honest, I don't do well with period pieces. There's just something about watching them that make it had for me to care..which unfortunately has seeped into books set in the past. With silver linings set in 1939, I got four pages in and wanted to give up.

For a book that is 30 years old, and being sent during the 1930s is a lot. There is a lot of different characters to jump between, a lot of detail to intake and just a lot going on.

This book basically went through the eyes and out the ears.

The year is 1938 in the town of Pontypridd in Wales. This is the story of ordinary people with problems, families, economic struggles. Of love and the loss thereof, of gossip and slandering and all the things folks do. The characters are funny and sad and the stories told were ones that made up a book I thoroughly enjoyed!

I enjoyed this hard-to-put-down novel. The setting in 1930's Wales was an eye opener as to the life the poor had to endure. Full of romance but also cruelty and death. The main characters were not easy to identify with until their tragedies struck.
