Few words cut to the core of modern women like ‘slut.’ Our attitudes are shifting towards of sex outside of marriage, sex between whomever happen to love each other (regardless of gender), and sex positivity-- experimenting with positions and toys. But we’re still sluts. Women are still defined by their sexuality. These are essays of women starting in the middle and moving forward based on hindsight and instinct. We’re trying to become empowered women without knowing what an empowered woman looks like. For all we know, it could look a lot like being a slut.
This isn't a bad freebie, and the essays range from women writers to men writers, covering all types of preference. At once depressing, realstic, and hopeful.
Thank you Leila for recommending this book, it was a great read that was also thought-provoking! It challenged me to embrace the "slutness" and to redefine it.
I got this book because the description sounded intriguing and it was free! At first, I didn't know what to expect because the first two stories were about gay guys and their descriptions on their sexual encounters which felt a little awkward for me. I thought that maybe this was not what I was thinking and was going to delete it off my KINDLE. I decided to give it a chance and I'm glad I did. It was a quick read! Basically, each essay was a person's perception on the word, slut, and other sexual ideas such as rape, sexual harrassment, and oral sex. It was disheartening to read about women getting called sluts for the dumbest reasons such as they wore dresses or were raped! It was interesting to receive insight of 100 guys that were polled about what they would think of a girl if she had sex on the first date. This book was just okay for me though and that's why I gave it three stars.
This collection of essays was free on my Kindle and sounded intriguing enough for a download. I was pleasantly surprised by some funny and some very well-thought out essays on just what the word slut means. Sex, relationships, and power were all discussed, and the only time I got uncomfortable was when explicit sexual material was discussed. Otherwise, solid collection! If you have Kindle, this is worth a download.
