Bill Johnson and his wife Brenda (Beni) Johnson are the Senior Pastors of Bethel Church in Redding, California. Johnson is a fifth generation pastor.

Johnson was born in Minnesota in 1951 and became a Christian as a young child. Soon after, Johnson read seven books on prayer, which significantly affected his perspective and subsequent ministry.

Bill Johnson and his wife have three children: Eric, Brian and Leah.

Johnson speaking at a conference
Bill Johnson and Beni (Brenda) began as singles pastors under his father at Bethel. In 1979, they became senior pastors of Mountain Chapel in Weaverville, California.

While pastoring in Weaverville, Johnson attended a 1987 conference led by John Wimber, founder of the Vineyard Church Movement. According to Johnson "A number of healings and manifestations broke out and I didn't know what to do with it. I didn't object to it, I wasn't opposed to it; I just didn't know how to pastor it in a way that it would continue and increase".

In 1995, Johnson attended the Toronto Blessing revival at the Toronto Airport Vineyard church. Johnson relates: "In Toronto I said, 'Lord, if You touch me again I will never change the subject.' So I went up for prayer every time it was offered. I didn't have anything dramatic happen, but I came home and said, 'I am going to give the rest of my life to this.'"

In February 1996, after 17 years of leading the Weaverville church, the Johnsons were invited to become senior pastors of Bethel. Today Johnson describes Bethel as a church where "everything we do either fuels revival or is fueled by revival." Under his leadership, Bethel left the Assemblies of God in 2006 to become a nondenominational charismatic church.

According to a recent book written by Johnson, "Face to Face with God", Bethel is "a church where supernatural encounters with God happen regularly, miracles are common, and the congregation has an infectious passion for spiritual growth." The church has approximately 1,500 members, and a School of Supernatural Ministry.

Their Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry has 1,200 students enrolled with over 370 from other countries. Johnson leads a network of churches dedicated to global, multi-generational revival, Global Legacy. Johnson has written a number of books and travels extensively as a featured revival conference speaker. Johnson is also involved with the Northern California Revival Fellowship, a group of north Californian pastors committed to revival.

I loved loved loved this book. This was a book written by a pastor, and seeker of God's heart and is all about living outside of the box. Living with passion, and creativity and all about letting your life as a Christian be a solution for the brokenness of the world we live in. It challenged me, and I have definitely found another spiritual father in Bill Johnson.

I felt this book had some real nuggets of wisdom - and for me - it did provoke a few genuine "stop and think" moments. Unfortunately, I feel like it was about 70 pages too long, and some sections were decidedly "mushy" in content and clarity.

This book inspires and challenges. It inspires you to dream God dreams but at the same time there is a call to action. God is a eternally creative and we can take part. How exciting is that?

Bill uses both Old and New Testament passages and the way he does opens your eyes to new understanding. I will never look at the passages of Jesus and the fig tree that withers the same. I have new understanding and it is exciting.

This was one of my most interesting reads yet. I went into the book with no expectations per say, but I definitely went into it with a bias that was cautious around Bill Johnson and his Theology as, although my Church is overall a big supporter of him... From some videos of him I have seen I wasn't a big contender for some of the Theology he holds.

That being said, I blasted into Chapter 1 and 2 and almost immediately got a real bitter taste of the book. I didn't like what I perceived him to be saying and I became a bit of a heresy hunter about it. What I found difficult was that some parts of it I could say Amen too, but at others the lines were much more blurred and I felt that he gave to much credit to what our desires were rather than getting revelation from God. Interestingly though, after a day or two I felt really convicted about how I felt about it and I realized I had come in with my bad bias and given him a bad rep. I decided to pray, and start again from Chapter 1 with as little bias as possible. Although, there were still parts that I wasn't as fond of; I found that going in with an unbiased mindset and a solid Theology I was able to enjoy it much more and get much more blessing out of it, whilst spitting out the not so good bits

As the book went on, mixed with situations that were going on in my life while reading it - I was actually starting to really enjoy it and be very blessed by it. It opened my eyes to a new change of vision I needed when looking at the future and looking at whats possible when we partner with God. I would say it really improved my prayer life and helped me to pray with a sense of powerful faith and security in God. It also helped me to believe for things much more confidently than I would have otherwise, even in family and friends situations. I can see as I continue my journey with God, that some of the lessons from the book will continue to encourage me and push me to pray for bigger things and believe for more (which is vital as a Christian in our modern world)

That being said though, the reason I only rated it 3 stars is because although I was definitely very blessed by it as Ive mentioned, I just struggled to agree with some of his Theology (even later on in the book once I had become more open to it). I was concerned how he worded and described some things and felt that he was a bit careless at times - for example when talking about the Bible (at one point he talked about how if a scripture spoke to his situation and was edifying, it didn't matter if he used it out of context, because it's the "living word" which I think is quite careless and may work for him but can be dangerous if taught to all). Obviously, it's quite likely I may have taken him out of context myself, but personally some things I can not find myself to align with.

My final thoughts are that, Yes! We absolutely need a big revival when in comes to Christianity in our modern world and I believe that this book definitely helps opens our eyes to that and highlights what that means for us personally, how we can work with God to achieve that personally and in relation to our passions and gifts. But, I think some parts of his Theology need to be reconsidered before we pursue this exact route of revival; and I am definitely going time in the future looking into Bills Theology properly so I can find my proper stance on it and get a better understanding of it, rather than just reading a book. I would be open to reading another one of his books in future

Hence 3 Stars
Read this book if you're wanting inspiration, more vision, or a greater sense of your purpose and how you can work with God to help outwork His purpose

A book sprinkled with gold. I didn't agree with all of it but neither did I have any moment - as I have had in other writings by the same author - where there was a profound check in my spirit.

The moments that spoke to me personally were:

Ok, no surprise that the first one was about names - from p33f - God assigned Adam the task of naming all the animals (see Gen. 2:19). Names had much richer meaning in those days because they represented the nature of something. I believe that Adam was actually assigning to each animal its nature, its realm of authority and the dimension of glory it would enjoy. In reality, Adam's assignment was to help define the nature of the world he was to live in.

Second one should be no surprise either, since it is tangentially related to my own name - from p62 - barrenness, such as Hannah's, is not to get us to strategise our way into the promise but to cause us to be desperate enough to seek God.

Third one - p 81f - the story of the roadrunner which loved to worship and was found dead by Jason after becoming startled and hurtling into a plate glass window.

Excellent 👌🏼
This book echoes what I remember Louie Giglio did a series on, Passion & Purpose. It ignites that fire inside you and thrusts you forward into wanting to take hold of the wonderful dreams God has in store for you. It’s a releasing & faith-challenging book, that comes against the fears and says, “go for it.” It challenged my faith in reminding me that God is the God of the impossible. Perhaps God also enjoys partnering with us and showing us the impossibilities that in the natural realm would never make sense, but with Him, He is able to go beyond the natural and into His Kingdom realm of impossibilities becoming possible. Challenged in having a more desperate heart to see His Kingdom being brought to earth.

Bill’s “radical” thoughts are straight from scripture. The book emphasizes the need for joy, reinforces identity, and gives permission to embrace the supernatural.

“One of the greatest errors in and time theology comes from working to interpret types and symbols (the unobvious) until they redefine the clear commands of the Lord (the obvious). For example, many know much more about Gog and Magog, the Ten nation confederacy, the seven years of tribulation, the antichrist, etc., then they do about the simple command to pray “on earth as it is in heaven.“ 👏🏼

What a great book, that took me far too long to read! This has a lot of similarities to the book, “God’s Big Idea.” I appreciated having read that one previously, because the same concepts were reaffirmed in this one, and many more concepts were built upon that foundation of living in God’s Kingdom and what that actually means for us as Christians. We have full access in Christ! This book talks a lot about that and what that practically means for us. It’s very encouraging and inspiring! I’d definitely recommend it!

Overall great writing, there’s a lot of great nuggets that our inspirational and make you think deeply about the Scriptures! Are a few parts that I think he goes too far when talking about the Scriptures. But I can really appreciate what he’s doing, I would just make sure we really know what the Scriptures are talking about first.

I couldn't put this book down, it dives deep into many topics and Bill shares a couple supernatural testimonies. I would definitely read this book again, it was so good; I highly recommend it.

Profound

I want to dream more with God after reading this profound book. It highlighted the calling, purpose and influence of a believer who partners with God for the advancement of the Kingdom. This book kindly illustrates the attitudes and heart of the Father towards us His children.

One of the best books I have read by Pastor Bill Johnson. This book has told me a lot on our role as Stewards of the Purposes of God. Most of the things mentioned I have personally experienced in my time alone with God but couldn't really understand. Reading this book has brought more understanding and revelation of my role here on earth.

I have been meaning to read this book for almost nine years and I finally did it— and it ended up being about a totally different topic than I expected. I think the subtitle is a much better descriptor “co-laboring with God for cultural transformation.” I love Bill Johnson and his ministry and this book was a good one if you’re interested in that topic!

This book continues to expand my knowledge of God, Scripture and the Holy Spirit. If you have wondered about prayer, answers and how we pray, you will be re-introduced to God through scripture and how we are to pray. The church has wandered by and large onto a path of Sunday ritual without recognizing the amazing, miracle working, redemptive power of God. We question so many things for which there are clear answers in the Bible.

He continues to challenge and reignite believers. Thank you, Bill Johnson! Bill Johnson

I am re-reading this masterpiece.

This book has reignited my dreams and hunger for the impossible. Bill has a gift of stirring up the Spirit within a believer so that they can begin to seek first God’s Kingdom and desire the impossible. If you feel like life is mundane and you know there’s something more, read this!

There’s so much more for believers in Jesus to experience and experience and in this excellent book, Bill Johnson explores some of the possibilities and explodes some of the myths of what it means to live a full and engaged Christian life. Highly recommended!

Great Book

Once again, Bill Johnson has hit the nail on the head. This message must get out to the Body of Christ. The church must stop playing defense and get on offense so we can bring about all that God desires in our times.
