In this little book, Dr. Timothy C. Tennent brings together a wealth of theological and biblical insight with years of practical experience in making disciples. Broken into 12 chapters, one for each of the great faith declarations of the creed, this resource makes for an excellent introduction or refresher course on the essentials of the Christian faith. It works well for personal or group study as well as a congregation wide journey.
I had never given much thought to the Apostle's Creed even though I grew up in church - we memorized the Lord's Prayer and Psalm 23 and the 10 Commandments but never the Creed. Maybe because it had the word catholic in it? I don't know and I'm not going to continue to speculate. I had to read this little book over the course of 1 and half classes at IWU for discussion board posts and I'll say it cleared up a lot of things for me. I've always know catholic means unity while Catholic refers to the denomination, but it made the Apostle's Creed stand out to me and that it is something all Christians should know and understand.
This a wonderful merging of a theological reflection on the foundational core of Christianity and an inspirational devotion drawn from this great affirmation of faith. Not only does it explore the depth of meaning in the Apostles' Creed, it also invites the reader to apply that meaning to their life of faith. Even there, it goes one step further. After nourishing the spirit, it challenges us to put our spiritual insight into action in our life, our relationship with God, our communion with the body of Christ, and our connection to all of humanity and creation.
