It is hard to find intermediate-low books for learners of French, but Marc Thil really hits the spot. Short, sweet with fantasy and a charmingly naive view of a child´s world... I think the original target audience may have been fathers searching for material for read-alouds with their six year old sons. This 46 year old reads these stories while fast-walking on a treadmill, part of my 30+ year lackadaisical strategy to master la belle langue. If I could go back and talk to the sixteen year old me who had just started to learn French, I would tell him not to try so hard reading difficult texts, to avoid the pocket editions of classics that I read at a snails pace and not to stick multiple post-it notes to each page with the definitions of the new words I was not learning. "Just find easy reading like Marc Thil's books", I would tell him. He probably would roll his eyes at me, a 46 year old loser at French.
I bought this before some of the longer French language novels I have been through because it is marketed as easy short stories. It is indeed an easy read, each story being quite achievable for anyone with advanced beginner French onwards. However it falls down in the quality of the stories, and after I had read a couple I left this book for something more interesting. I have now read the remainder, because I paid for the book and it is still good practice. Nevertheless I don't really think the stories improved. Perhaps that is just prejudice against short stories on my part - I tend to like something longer with some characterisation - but even as short stories, these felt like they were aimed at a primary school level.
Of course, primary school level is not itself bad, but I would have liked more humour in that case. The police inspector hiding in a dustbin might have been somewhat humorous, but more could perhaps have been made of that.
I think Vachement Moi was a much better example of what would make good material at this level (see my review above).
Voilà, mon premier livre que j’ai lu en français! L’année dernière j’ai décidé apprendre le français, principalement pour m’amuser. J’aime apprendre les nouveaus choses – je suis une étudiante pour la vie. Parce que j’ai appris l’espagnol, je sais que ls meilleur moyen d’apprendre pour moi est lire. Bien que j’ai toujour besoin d’apprendre beaucoup de choses – comme les temps de verbes – j’ai voulais commencer à lire dès que possible.
A good book for intermediate French learners (A2 - B1 level). The vocabularies are enough to push your French forward, but they are not too hard that you need to search for every word while reading. The tenses used in the book are diverse, so you can learn grammar, verb conjugations, and some nice phrases from the books. The stories are ok, some of them are a bit weird to me since they involve very imaginative things without a proper ending or explanations. But in general, the book is great in its purpose of helping you learn the language.
Trop simpliste, les enfants sont capables (et méritent !!) de lire des histoires consistantes Vu les avis ici, il semblerait qu'il s'agit d'étrangers souhaitant apprendre le français, ils ont donc apprécié l'extrême simplicité sans chercher plus loin. Pour les autres, parents et enfants, passez votre chemin... Le seul truc qui sauve un peu ce livre, c'est les encarts illustrés.
This was a delightful supplement to my online French course. I'm currently re-learning my High School French, not used in 50+ years, and I wanted to see how well I could do with "real" reading. The stories are rated for ages 8-12 but they are not babyish. Each is told by or about a kid of about 12. On Kindle you have the dictionary option which gives a quick translation of unfamiliar words, and it's a good way to discover some new vocabulary not usually found in standard French lessons.
Great for those who're looking to start polishing reading skills in French. The stories are short and simple but engaging enough for the reader. My only con would be that I would've appreciated quite a lot an annotated dictionary for the set phrases it uses, since sometimes it's a pain to find them in online dictionaries.
Avant tout, je pense que les histoires sont très lisibles, facile de comprendre et aussi amusant. Je suis absolument contente après lire ce livre parce que ce mon première lecture complètement dans la langue français et il me permette d'apprendre quelques choses liées de vocabulaire et de grammaire.
I guess this book is aimed at young children as the stories are very short, simple and don't really have the depth that an adult would find satisfying. Having said that, they are very easy to read, which was why I read them in the first place, just to brush up my rusty French and develop my confidence before embarking on something more challenging.
All of the books in the series by Marc Thil are great for practicing your French language listening. The stories are short, interesting and his French is understandable for a beginning-intermediate French language learner.
J'ai aimé ce livre. Je pensais qu'il était pour les débutants donc quand j'ai commencé à lire ça était un peu difficile. Heureusement, j'ai compris à tout et il est devenu plus facile le long d'aller lire.
C' est un bon livre pour les personnes qui ont un français intermédiaire ou un peu bas, il sont des histoires tres courtes qu'ils peuvent prendre presque 10 minutes
This was the easiest of the books I've tried to read in French and I felt it was good for helping me practice the language, but the stories and characters weren't particularly engaging.
C'est difficile d'être huit! Ou a lire comme les enfants qui ont huit ans. Je besoin de apprendre plus de vocabulaire! Néanmoins, j'ai fini ce livre. Hourra!
