It's not just ghosts that we fear, it's the fear of something unknown, something horrible that may cause harm to us. Our dark deeds that we fear may come to us with renewed force. What if it's not God who wants to punish for our misdeeds? A psychiatrist who had a strage patient with equally strange narrative, A failed author employed unscrupulous strategies to be a successful author, a mysterious gang of howling dogs, A fearsome mother-in-law who devised a ploy to torture her daughter-in-law. 'The Clammy Hands of The Dark Nights' is a collection of supernatural encounters spanning over different regions in the country, each story plunging the readers deep into the abyss of unknown.
'The Clammy Hands of The Darkest Nights' is a collection of seven supernatural stories set in modern, contemporary India. It did not take long for me to add this book in my favourite list because I enjoyed each story with full gusto. The title is just perfect as all the stories are somehow related to night. Somehow nights multiply the fear factor manifolds. Each uncanny story is laced with unpredictability, it's surprising even though the stories proceed slowly, their brooding nature invokes sadness. They are engaging, eerie, spooky yet somehow sad and captures the human psychology perfectly. My favourite among the seven stories is 'The Jingle of The Gold Bangles', it encompasses various human emotions. Coming to the characters, they portray a plethora of human mind, each narrative is distinct and unique in their own way.
Writing style is good, it's engaging. Recommended to ghost story and supernatural mystery lovers.
No human being can escape from the consequences of his/her doing. And revolving around this concept the author Ratnadip Acharya have written this amazing collection of short stories. ‘The Clammy Hands of The Dark Nights’ consist of 7 short stories. All the stories are based on different locations in India and it explores the dynamics of human emotions. A human being is capable of doing anything (good and bad..both). Many at times in the constant greed of name and fame humans don’t hesitate to stand back and judge themselves based on the moral principles that they were fed from the time that they were kids. The stories in this book shows those dark choices of human beings.
I personally love ‘The Mirage of The Bestseller’ and ‘And it all Began with a Feather’. Especially ‘and it all began with a Feather’ was really a hard hitting story in referring to the present scenario. The stories are written in a suspenseful way therefore I won’t elaborate about the plot lines.
To sum up it was a wonderful read for me. The author added Supernatural elements in the stories to give it a spooky vibe and at the same time leaving a good moral lesson foe its readers. Definitely recommend this book to all the people out there. Even if you don’t like to read books usually this one will definitely make you love stories. Any story of this book can be read separately at anytime as they are not inter related.
Horror is one genre that is a sort of "necessary evil" for me. I love picking up books based on it but then readily regret as it takes some good time to come out of those scary visuals that my gullible brain so often creates.
Ratnadip sir is one of those very few authors who is a jack of all trades. He has written on such diverse genres that I sometimes wonder how can someone be so versatile and the only genre that I never expected him to choose was horror and here he has yet again proved me wrong .
The book's title fascinates you immediately and raises an appetite to read it . Rather than an extension of a single plot the book is a combination of 7 different stories which are all standalone. What intrigued me the most about the book is contrary to the expected notion , I feel its purpose was not to scare readers but to give some lifeflong lessons and I guess the focus of author was inculcating a sense of morality amongst the readers about the consequences of their actions and to a great deal he has been successful.
The stories are written well and through sketches author has stamped his authority on the psyche of readers as it has made the experience more surreal . With the tales spanning different cities even sometimes states the writer has added a cultural significance to the book and added a constrasting flavour to each .
Not everything is perfect though. The over explanation at times which is a trademark of Ratnadip sir has somewhat diluted the essence of some tales as in a horror book I strongly feel the lesser you say the better it is and let the reader's mind wander . Though as a slow burner it does cater to the requirements well.
This author has crafted a truly captivating novel that will leave you breathless and on the edge of your seat. From the very first page, the reader is drawn into a world of eerie storytelling that is impossible to put down. The author's mastery of the supernatural genre is on full display, with an array of spine-tingling experiences that will keep you guessing until the very end.
The setting of the story is vividly portrayed, immersing the reader in a world that is both familiar and otherworldly. The author's use of language and tone is especially effective in creating an atmosphere of creeping dread that lingers long after the final page has been turned. Every sentence is crafted with precision and care, evoking a sense of unease and terror that will have you checking over your shoulder long after you've finished reading.
One of the most impressive aspects of this novel is the author's ability to create characters that are both relatable and intriguing. The reader becomes deeply invested in their struggles and experiences, rooting for them to overcome the terrifying obstacles they face. The result is a gripping, heart-pounding read that will stay with you long after you've finished the final chapter.
In short, this is a masterful work of fiction that is not to be missed. Whether you're a fan of supernatural thrillers or simply enjoy a good scare, this novel is sure to leave you thoroughly spooked and thoroughly satisfied.
After having read this 280-page collection of short stories, I have finally gathered my thoughts to share them.
As a fan of his previous work, "The Speaking Stone," I was excited to read this collection of short stories, and I was not disappointed.
Rather, I highly recommend Ratnadip Acharya's book "The Clammy Hands of The Dark Nights: Supernatural Encounters in Contemporary India."
Being a fan of short stories, "The Clammy Hands of The Dark Nights: Supernatural Encounters in Contemporary India" was the perfect book for me to delve deeper into the author's fantastic imagination.
Each story is unique and takes the reader on a journey into the unknown, where reality and the supernatural blend seamlessly. From Mumbai to Kolkata, Mussoorie to Tripura, Nagpur to Matheran, and the Himalayan foothills, the author has skillfully woven together tales of the macabre and the bizarre.
Each story is built on a unique premise, and the characters are well-crafted with excellent world-building and character development.
What I appreciate about this book is that every story carries a subtle, indirect message about our society, cautioning against the dangers of greed, dishonesty, and cruelty.
I was particularly drawn to the stories that were set against a Bengali background, reminiscent of Satyajit Ray's tales, and those that revolved around animals, advocating for kindness towards them and making the stories more meaningful.
One of the things I enjoyed most about this book is the way the author has captured the essence of contemporary India, with its myriad cultural and regional variations, while still maintaining a sense of the supernatural that transcends time and place. The characters are well-developed, and their struggles and experiences are hauntingly real.
Overall, I found "The Clammy Hands of The Dark Nights" to be a compelling and thought-provoking read. Whether you are a fan of supernatural fiction or just looking for a good book to read, I highly recommend this collection of short stories. Ratnadip Acharya has once again proven himself to be a master storyteller, and I look forward to reading more of his work in the future.
Omg!! This book is awesome. To be honest, this book has changed my mind about books based on supernatural powers. After reading this book, I believe that supernatural powers do exist.
~ Each Chapter has a different plotline full of twists. I was really amazed how the author managed to put so much thrill and suspense in short stories. Loved the writing style, it's so engaging, you wouldn't be able to stop reading. Till the last line of each chapter, i was eagerly waiting to know the ending. My most favourite chapter was The Mirage of the bestsellers, In the end I got goosebumps. This was totally based on one of seven worldly sins, Greed. When one is greedy it results in inhumanity. I felt sad, shocked and satisfied while reading.
~ I am a reader who does not get convinced easily but this was my first read of this author's works. Now I would love to pick other works too. Another chapter I loved was The jingle of the gold bangles , this was highly based on a saying - "Karma is a bitch". I felt so disheartened, miserable and happy by the end. Life is a circle, everything comes back to us.
~ This book is a thought provoking read. Full of moral values and life lessons. Such books should be must read. I highly recommend it to every reader. Book Cover is dark and thrilling, but the book is much more fun. The book title is justified. Do check the blurb and get a copy of it.
Title - The Clammy hands of the Dark Nights Author - Ratnadip Acharya Publisher - Aksora publications Genre - fiction Pages - 280 Format - paperback
'The Clammy hands of the Dark Nights' by Ratnadip Acharya is a collection of stories which takes the readers on a travel journey to different parts of the country like Mumbai, Kolkata, Mussoorie, Tripura etc. Each story is unique and different from each other with a deep meaning in it.
Read the book to know how the author has weaved a supernatural element with everyday life.
The cover of the book is aptly designed and the title is totally apt to the content. The plot of the story is interesting, engaging and unputdownable. It is a perfect blend of mystery, suspense, supernatural elements. The author has narrated each and every story amazingly. The writing style of the author is smooth and flowing. Language used is simple and lucid. Characters are well developed and described like the psychiatrist in Mumbai to the failed author in Kolkata. The flow of the book is well paced.
Overall, a thrilling read.
Rating - 5/5
I recommend this book to all supernatural lovers out there.
What happens when the world we normally live in, suddenly feels not so normal? What happens when there are entities that are beyond our control who somehow take control of our lives? What happens when 'natural' meets the 'Supernatural'?
The Clammy Hands of The Dark Nights by author Ratnadip Acharya is a spooky read for the lovers of horror. The book contains 7 uniquely different short stories based on the genre of horror. Each story has a certain distinctive theme and a tone to itself as if trying to convey a valuable message at the end. The plot of each story is based in the different cities of India such as Mumbai, Kolkata, Mussoorie etc. and paints a quite vividly accurate picture of the location as well. What gets better is that every character in each of the story gets his/her own depth and has a meaning to their existence in the story. It is brilliant because even if they are short stories, still, every character in them is rightfully included rather than just being there for the namesake. That shows the attention to detail that the author has put into each of the stories.
The stories are rather simple but they are equally thought provoking as the author connects the human actions, their repercussions and the paranormal occurrences beautifully. This gives the reader an ethical perspective of karma alongside the thrill that comes with horror. Apart from that, the sketches and illustrations are beautiful, giving it a childlike innocence.
Where it could have improved is the fact that some of the stories could have been shortened a bit to make them more crisp because at times, the plot seemed a bit dragged. Other than that, there's absolutely nothing for me to complain about. ❤️
"The Clammy Hands of The Dark Nights: Supernatural Encounters in Contemporary India" by Ratnadip Acharya is a captivating and eerie collection of short stories that explores the theme of supernatural encounters in modern-day India.
The book is a compilation of stories that delve into the paranormal experiences of ordinary people from different walks of life. Each story is unique and engrossing, with its own twist and turn that leaves the reader on edge. From haunted hotels and forests to possessed objects and spirits, the author successfully weaves a web of supernatural tales that will leave readers both fascinated and spooked.
One of the strengths of the book is the author's ability to paint vivid images of the settings and characters in each story. The reader is transported to different parts of India, and the cultural nuances of each region are beautifully captured in the narratives. This attention to detail not only adds depth to the stories but also makes them more relatable to readers from diverse backgrounds.
Another noteworthy aspect of the book is the author's use of language. The prose is simple yet evocative, and the dialogues are natural and realistic. The writing style creates a sense of immediacy, and the reader feels like a part of the story, experiencing the supernatural encounters alongside the characters.
Although there are parts in the stories which are superfluous and the pace was bit slow at some point, the book is worth a read.
Overall, "The Clammy Hands of The Dark Nights" is a must-read for fans of horror and supernatural fiction. The book is a thrilling and entertaining read that showcases the author's storytelling process. Acharya's ability to blend elements of traditional Indian folklore with modern-day sensibilities makes this book a unique addition to the genre of horror literature. Highly recommended!
India is a land of stories. We have a new supernatural or mythological story at every turn in our country, especially in the mountains. Our mountains hide lots of secrets in their natural beauty. They can be beautiful in an eerie manner. This book encompasses about 5 states in the seven stories presented by the author. We get to see different types of stories. There are stories of some encounters, revenge, dream sequence, live experiences and what not.
For me, horror is a segment which I am trying to explore as much as I can and that was the major reason on picking up the book. I found some of the stories as quite interesting. The one is Mussoorie is my personal favorite. I liked the way it was presented. But for some stories I felt that the narrative was quite long making it difficult to read. The story was good but could be reduced to an extent. Another thing that I found missing was the connection to the location of the stories. The stories are generalized and the place does not create any impact on it. I would have loved to know about some local folklore or related myth or story going around the area which would give more insight of the area. The language used by the author is easy to understand making it a go to book for beginners.
We also get to know various things about human behavior and learn a few things too. This can be considered as a full package with horror, thrill and teaching. Beware of what you are doing and making others feel because you reap what you saw and it will come back to you no matter what. If you are a person looking forward to a horror read, this is a book you can try.
Short stories are a wonderful medium to put across some really exciting tales to the readers in a concise pattern and which if well-executed, would prove successful enough to engage and engross you into the stories until the very end. Also, when it’s a book that encompasses a horror short story collection, it adds all the more thrill to reading if the stories justify the expectations of its readers.
When I began reading ‘The Clammy Hands of the Dark Nights’ by ‘Ratnadip Acharya’, I most certainly thought of the book to be a regular short story collection with a predictable style of plotline that would be borderline entertaining.
However, when I finished reading the first story titled – ‘The Strange Case of Mr. Yelpade’, I was actually quite surprised mainly for two reasons, -The story was extremely unique -The story, though it revolves around eerie happenings, has a strong moral which is quite rare to include in a genre that these stories have been written on.
Such is the case in all of the remaining 6 stories as well, wherein all the stories have a unique touch to it and they all teach us something worthy towards the end making this book not just an entertaining read but also a book you can learn from.
Also, though the cover design and title give a hint of having a horror element to it, they’re not really that dark and would neither scare you; they’re more like mysteries with a tinge of mild eeriness. My most liked stories have to be the first, second and the last one. A few stories in the middle didn’t appeal that much to me as these 3 did.
Overall, I’d suggest this book to anyone on the hunt for a unique short story collection or someone who is looking to get out of a reading slump.
The author takes the readers on a journey through different parts of India, where characters grapple with bizarre occurrences that challenge their perception of the world.
Each story in the collection is unique and leaves a lasting impression on the reader. The author's mastery of language and storytelling is evident as the narrative unravels, and the reader is left to contemplate the mysteries presented.
One of the most impressive aspects of the collection is how the author weaves together the supernatural with everyday life. The stories are grounded in reality, with relatable characters facing common struggles, but the author deftly introduces elements of the supernatural that elevate the stories into an entirely different realm.
The settings of the stories are varied and evoke a sense of place that is both familiar and otherworldly. The cities of Mumbai and Kolkata, the hill stations of Mussoorie and Matheran, and the remote state of Tripura all feature prominently in the collection, each contributing to the atmosphere and tone of the stories.
The characters in the stories are well-drawn, and the reader becomes fully invested in their lives and experiences. From the psychiatrist in Mumbai to the failed author in Kolkata, each character's journey is unique and compelling. The supernatural elements are seamlessly integrated into their lives, and the author expertly portrays the characters' reactions to the inexplicable events.
The collection's themes of life, death, and the afterlife are skillfully explored, and the stories challenge the reader's perceptions of what is possible. The author doesn't shy away from exploring darker themes, and the consequences of the characters' actions are often unexpected and haunting.
The collection is a must-read for fans of the supernatural and anyone looking for a thought-provoking and entertaining read.
Book Title: The Clammy Hands of The Dark Nights Author: Ratnadip Acharya Publisher: Aksora Publications Format: Paperback Language: English Genre: Horror Pages: 288 Book Rating: 5/5
Most readers like horror books because it is full of thrill, suspense, paranormal elements, and fear. But many writers are not experts at satisfying their readers. But this book is one of those which gave complete reader satisfaction.
Realism and surrealism are reflected as co-existing in this book from the many terrifying stories across the country. I can assure you that the readers will sense the unnatural presence of something if they read the stories attentively. The anecdotes revolve around a psychiatrist, a failed writer, a mother-in-law, and a traveler. The drawings used in the book are enough to massively rise the nervousness of the readers. The places that brought about the goosebumps include Mumbai, Kolkata, Mussoorie, Tripura, Nagpur, Matheran, etc. I liked Khagen aka Sanatan Biswas's story because it is based on the Bengali community. The author has skilfully depicted the Bengali culture and places in his second story.
The language is simple and comprehensive. Each story can etch a long-term impression on the mind of the bibliophiles. The narrative is very lively. The cover photo and title both are tempting. The book has enough qualities to keep the readers hooked till the end. Readers can enjoy the tales with a cone filled with jhal muri.
Ratnadip Acharya's The Clammy Hands of The Dark Nights is a truly unique collection of short stories that brings together the ethereal and the everyday in a way that captivates the reader from the very first page. With each tale, the author deftly explores the strange and unsettling, taking readers on a journey through the supernatural that is both haunting and unforgettable.
One of the standout features of the collection is the author's masterful use of setting to create a vivid sense of place that immerses the reader in each story. From the bustling cities of Mumbai and Kolkata, to the serene hill stations of Mussoorie and Matheran, to the secluded state of Tripura, the settings in the stories are as rich and varied as the characters themselves.
Speaking of characters, the author's talent for crafting compelling and nuanced individuals is on full display in this collection. Each character's journey is uniquely wrought, with their experiences and emotions expertly woven into the surreal tapestry of the supernatural. It is this ability to blend the ordinary with the extraordinary that makes the stories in this collection so powerful and resonant.
The author's prose is another standout feature, with the elegant and evocative language bringing each story to life in a way that is both beautiful and haunting. The author's willingness to explore the darker aspects of human nature only adds to the depth and complexity of the tales, creating a collection that is as thought-provoking as it is engaging.
Love for short stories never dies, indulgement may reduce but can be started all over again. Let's revive the reading culture of short story books. Today I'm gonna be talking about one such book which blew up my mind and I'm writing this down as soon as I'm done with it to put in words the exact feelings. Books with supernatural elements or with a touch of horror are my thing and most of the readers are as well. This excites something in general among people. The book contains 7 distinct stories with one element in common- horror. Is this only about horror? No! There's a lot to learn from this book. There are stories covered from different states of India. These stories give you flashbacks from the Nanihood we all had when we visit our granny’s place and bring nostalgia. Imagining each story becomes easier just because of how the author has put his hard work behind each plot and characterisation. As if they are talking to you and you can see or touch and feel them standing right next to them. Traditional India with a touch of modern vicinity is reflected throughout the book. Rich in pieces of information. The slow build of the plot enhances the glory ness of each story. The endings of all are mindblowing. There is something to offer and learn from them. It's so gripping and the writing style makes it quicker to read. My favourite would be “The Jingle of The Gold Bangles”. I refrain from giving a brief description of all 7 cause it would seriously spoil your interest to dive. From the beginning till the d let it be a surprise. There are stories of An amputated hand, A failed author, A daughter in law, the howling of dogs and so on. So what's keeping you away? Go get Yourself one copy!
Recently, I came across this book, "The Clammy Hands Of The Dark Nights".It's cover is so scary and beautiful, so I thought to give it a try.
☠️About The Book:- This book is something that scared me and amazed me at the same time. The book contains a collection of seven supernatural stories from seven different places of our country. The first story is about a professional psychiatrist in Mumbai who meets a strange person. This strange person shares a creepy story that keeps him shaken! The second story is about an author in Kolkata who tries to become successful by using unfair means and then something very unusual happens to him. I loved the fifth story, "The Howls Of The Silent Nights" as one of the characters is named as Prachi🤭. The story is about a man who is irritated by the howling dogs and decides to get rid of them in a brutal manner but soon he gets engulfed in abnormal incidents which seem fishy! I literally loved this book!😨Every story gave me goosebumps. I was so scared that I couldn't read it during the night time because it felt as if someone was watching me and that scared me even more! 😳 Loved it! This kind of feelings come only when I read a good book! The author has written every story beautifully and the way he has described the events is enough to scare someone.😄 I would recommend this book to everyone who is fond of supernatural fiction! ☠️

In these stories the characters experience paranormal or supernatural situations. The stories are all filled with immense mystery.
I like that the author has choosen different location for each story. As the stories set in hilly areas like Mussoorie, Matheran give an errie feeling and made it altogether more exciting. The key element in these stories being betrayal in relationships, human greed.
The authors way of narrating is very intriguing and will held your attention. What i loved the most is, these stories are not very horrorish but have well balanced supernatural stuff. I also loved the drawings and illustrations in the book.
What i didn't like is that some stories were super lengthy. This could have been avoided. As unnecessary details makes it boring.
This collection will satisfy the taste of those who love light supernatural mysteries.

The stories are very short. So it's easy to take a break, come back, and start reading again. Despite their length, the characters seemed so real to me, and I could feel the depth in every story.
The aspect that I appreciate the most is that the author has made the setting of the story so incredibly good such that you feel you're exactly in that location, experiencing things, though you're reading a book. The supernatural elements are also handled with a deft touch, never overshadowing the human drama at the heart of each story. Instead, they serve to underscore the characters' struggles and bring a sense of otherworldliness to the narrative. This book managed to talk about many things that are deep and sensitive. Readers would definitely satisfied by reading about all these things.
'The Clammy Hands Of The Dark Night' is a compilation of 7 stories which revolve around tragedies, supernatural parameters, realism and surrealism. The Author seems certainly apt and way too bold while narrating all the 7 stories which accompanied different protagonists, varied landscapes and each with distinct plot. In addition to this, each story has something to keep the readers hooked throughout with what to happen next. However, I found 'The Mirage Of The Bestsellers' and 'A Circle Completes Itself' most engaging and captivating. From the cover and title of this book to the writer's command on his language and narration; the book paves it's way to one of the recommended titles. I genuinely found it fantastic, catchy and interesting to read. To conclude with, this book was worth to read. Each story and it's setting has an appealing start and end respectively. This was a satisfying and decent read with one of the best collections.

Except the very first story from the book, I like all the others. And among all my favorite ones are - The Mirage of the Bestsellers, The Sanatorium of My Matheran and A Circle Completes itself.
And in all the stories the author beautifully portrays the characters, their traits, habits and also the all the places mentioned are also captured well.
I like the writing, the thrilling aspects in all the story and as well as the whole atmosphere the author sets in each story without any fail, makes each one s captivating, intriguing tale.
So overall a great collection of short horror stories, a beginner friendly to the genre, and also if you like suspense, you'll like the stories too.
