Iwo; Assault on Hell is the fourth book in the Marine paratrooper series. The Marine Paras from the first three books - Mission Raise Hell, Battalion of the Damned, and the un-released third book - are disbanded from their units and used to form the combat nucleus of the newly formed 5th Marine Division. On February 19th, 1945, they land on Iwo Jima, the first US forces to fight on Japanese soil. Thirty-six days later, a composite battalion is all that remains to claim the island.
Iwo; Assault on Hell paints a blood mosaic that shows a worms eye view of what is arguably the most violent and bloody battle in WWII.
James F. Christ, a resident of Phoenix, Arizona, has traveled extensively, visiting World War II battle sites in Europe, Africa, and Asia, and interviewed more than two hundred veterans.
In boot camp in 1969 we were taught USMC history from the founding of the Corps in 1775. Special emphasis was placed on the suffering and and sacrifice of the Marines on Iwo Jima. This book brought home, in detail, what only was intimated in our boot camp classes. I recommend it highly for any student of military or Marine Corps history. Prepare however to be shocked and at once grateful for the tremendous sacrifice these young men made to preserve our democracy. God Bless America and the United States Marine Corps! Semper Fi!
The most factual book on iwo that I have ever read.
The book makes you feel like you are there. I was in the in the marshal islands when all of This happened and we flew wounded out to Hawaii so l know it is true.
This book captures the painful drudgery involved in the clearing of caves on Iwo Jima over many days by describing what seems to be each individual clearing of a cave on Iwo Jima over many days.
