I was born in Crescent City , California , a small logging town on the Pacific coast, home of enormous redwood trees and clear rivers. I have great memories of playing on stumps the size of small houses on my grandmother's acreage in a little town just north of Crescent City called Fort Dick . My sister and I would take daily walks to the main street store—an old, tiny white building that included the town's post office. The main street included just the market, a tavern (appropriately called The Stump) and a church we attended each Sunday morning. I loved that small town…and I still do.
In the early seventies my family moved to Washington, a state with gorgeous mountains, beautiful forests, and lots of green, which meant lots of rain, but I love all the seasons. I have wonderful memories of my childhood—a mother who was always at home, a father who worked hard to give us a good life, and a sister and brother who always looked out for me.
When I was all of 14 years old, I met Kip Templeton, my brother's best friend, and the man I would one day marry. Green eyes, dark hair, 6'1", and built like a Greek god , Kip had quite the reputation as a bad boy. I was absolutely terrified of him. Being that he was almost four years older than me, not to mention my brother's best friend, he was off-limits.
Yeah right…
Kip swept me off my feet and at the tender age of nineteen, I became pregnant with my first child. That same year I also discovered historical romance in the form of Kathleen Woodiwiss’s SHANNA. That book started a love of the genre that would spark a desire to write my own stories.
Two kids and many years later I sat down at my computer and started writing a romance novel. Realizing I had a lot to learn, I bought research books, and studied the craft of romance writing. I joined Romance Writers of America, and attended a Romantic Times convention. I went to every workshop and absorbed every word. I met authors like Heather Graham, Kat Martin, Virginia Henley and Susan Johnson who were all approachable and friendly. That trip solidified my desire to become a published author.
I sold six short stories to confession magazines, and felt like I was headed in the right direction when an untimely illness threw a wrench in my plans. Soon my focus turned from writing to fighting an inflammable bowel disease that would eventually cost me my large intestine in a radical surgery.
During my illness I had lost my desire to write, but eventually I felt that familiar urge to sit down and start a new story, and I did just that. I’ll never forget the phone call I received from Amy Garvey of Kensington saying she wanted to purchase the novel for their new Precious Gems Historical line. In that moment I had realized my dreams…and it felt incredible.
Since then, I have sold time-travel, historical, vampire and contemporary romances to Berkley, Avon, Ellora's Cave, Cerridwen Press, Hard Shell Word Factory and Triskelion. I’ve also made some incredible friends (Beth Ciotta, Jordan Summers, Tracy Cooper-Posey, Jolie Mathis, Mary Stella, Cynthia Valero, Patrice Michelle, Kathy Love, Arianna Hart & Kate Pearce) to name a few…who have gone through the ups and downs of publishing with me.
I still live in Washington with my husband Kip, who is my biggest cheerleader (I even talked him into modeling for my historical romance SURRENDER TO LOVE). Our daughter has left the nest but lives nearby and our youngest is attending college and still lives at home. We’re enjoying our lives and even bought a Harley, something we’ve been waiting twenty-plus years for. It’s a good life…and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Thanks for taking the time to read about me. I hope it gives you a good idea of who I am.
Well, we HR readers are guilty of a bit of fantasizing about hot blooded warriors and smooth, rakish rogues. And then, the time-travel genres take it to another level. The h is our alter ego as she travels from her boring, messy modern life to a place of her fantasy and where a hot, hunky warrior sorts falls madly in love with her. And this book is completely unrepentant about it, as I found out, cringing my way through the book. The 'h' - a 39 yo woman with a body that's, well, not all there (where it should be) and a life that's gone and left her behind - travels to medieval times, to wake up in a seriously hot bod, as wife to a hotter bod and...action!
*spoiler*Actually, all this left me a bit uncomfortable. Unlike other time travel books, we are not told what happens to the 'soul' of the body she inhabits. Mostly, either that person is dead or her time is up. At times, the h takes her own body to the past. But here, the 'wife' was not happy with her marriage to the H and wished to pine away to death...and so she just died? The H is happy that his wife is suddenly slobbering over him and jumping his bones and so he discards his lover/leman to accommodate the wife. He's none the wiser about the 'soul-exchange' and the truth, and it made me feel like as if the poor sod had been made a fool of, somehow. (Even though he's one happy befooled poor sod.)
The h is living out her fantasy ... and that's the story. Oh yes, an enemy is vanquished in between.
. Not quite as empty headed as I was expecting, it is still ridiculous (on many levels). I don't know why it tempted me. I'm not generally into grandma rejuvenation books. But I confess I read this one. It was entertaining for an hour or so.
There's a mysterious woman who goes around sending people into the past to meet their perfect match. Lizzie goes back to fall into the body of Kieran the Black's new bride who hates him. She wins over the hearts of all instantaneously with her brand of modern slang and mary sue charm. Of course they understand her English even though they speak medieval English as a second language. She monologues in her head a bit about the sad sack life she left behind (that didn't sound a bit mary sue-ish). It doesn't particularly endear me to her even though I feel bad she was married to such a douche canoe. (They were divorced recently... so no cheating by her)
Anyways, she knows all about the history of Kieran and so hopes to save his life from his ill fate.
This was a reread and I enjoyed it but you need to take it in the spirit it’s intended. It’s not a majorly in-depth read and it is quite stripped back and instalust but it was also sexy fun and Kieran and Lizzie have lots of red hot chemistry. Here middle aged Lizzie after touching the sword of Kieran the black finds herself transported into the past and straight into the body of eighteen-year-old lady Elizabeth a young nubile Saxon and now the reluctant wife of said Norman Kieran.
Kieran had resigned himself to his wife's apathy and hatred I mean she had taken to her bed resigned to die rather than be his wife so when the same wife miraculously recovers and seems so different and she also now wants to be a proper wife to him he’s delighted and enthralled with her personality change. It’s not long before they are totally enamoured with each other but Lizzie knows their days are numbered and her new husband is going to die. She is also now determined to avoid this dark fate.
So this was fun there’s not much deeper thought or even freaking out about the whole situation from Lizzie she is actually strangely pleased with her situation. It’s a simple story with some intrigue it’s also quite a short read and Lizzie doesn’t inform her husband about the switch. This could have been amazing with some expansion as it is it’s enjoyable if you suspend your disbelief over Lizzie and her eternal optimism and lack of freak out. I liked it, all the same, it was a light fun read.
I really enjoyed this one. The time-travel theme isn't particularly original, and the ending isn't, but there are a few reasons why I was hooked from the start.
First off, this doesn't pretend to be literature, or ultra-romantic. It's a time travel story with a vengeful, pissed middle-aged, and rather plain woman, who suddenly finds herself in the body of a total babe, married to Mr Gorgeous himself. Well, she's going to put all of her previous incarnation's experiences to good use, to get exactly what she wants, including enough great sex to make up for a lousy marriage and the six years of involuntary celibacy that followed.
Secondly, I really like the heroine's narrative using contemporary language, and the hero's using more typical HR-speak. It just makes for such a fun read. Where else in an HR would the heroine describe the hero as "total eye-candy"?
OK so the plot itself isn't revelatory, and the characterisations fairly simple, but if you want a simple, fluffy, fun, moderately sexy, quickie read, then enjoy!
If you are looking for a short satisfying read, this is one of it. Although the premise of the story is tried and tested - a modern-day woman time traveled and ended up in more than half-millenia back in time, falls in love with a man from that time and HEA etc, the story and characters themselves are quite easy to love. I was put-off by the title at first - Kieran The Black. Doesn't say much there. (And what's with the cover - nude warrior with a sword? Seriously...look closely - no pants/kilt...woohoo!)In short, the cover and the title do not do justice to the story.
So what's the story about? Middle-aged woman gets a second shot at love and life in a young beautiful body, married to a hunky warrior man very much into her - BRING IT ON! (Hell, i'd give it a shot too). Especially if said woman has wasted half her life married to an a-hole of a man and life has been oh-so-boring - hello! it's a no-brainer. So in other words, this story is a perfect few-hours fantasy read for all you ladies out there.
The writing is simple, with no distracting accents in the dialogue other than Lizzie's modern-day lingo to make it more authentic(i cringe when you get stories that want to depict the olden time so badly that the heroes would speak in "old english/scottish brogue" dialogues that seem forced and stilted. Yuk!). Weird part is the people around her didn't find it odd that she says words like "okay" and "yeah". In fact, her "strange" ways of speaking lends a bit of humour to the story. She's smart, sexy (well, she is a middle-aged divorced woman who already know her way around sexing up a guy although she's in a virginal 18-year-old body)and she's actually quite a spunky character. I like her. Even though she was married to a man who didn't appreciate her, she's not totally broken and bitter.
The hero, Kieran, is hotness. Big burly sword-wielding warrior. And he speaks French when he wants to up the seduction. Enough said! (fans self).
Other than that there are enough honourable secondary characters around - Hugh, the vassal (sidekick to hero?) is a gorgeous (young) guy, Olivier the squire is a pretty boy. Even Richard is not exactly described as ugly - only stinky. And cranky with a bit of crazy. So, good looking people abound in this story. Hollywood should turn this into a movie or something.
Would i recommend the book? Yes! Yess! Ohh..Yes!!!
Ok story, but it was lacking in emotional fulfillment for me. There were a lot of sex scenes, but they were pretty similar to each other. I like erotic stories but I prefer those which have something else like laughter, surprise, witty conversation, anticipation of an emotional relationship or feelings of fulfillment. This story was missing something for me.
Story Brief: Current day Lizzie time travels to 1067 where she finds herself as the wife of Kieran the Black. The wife she replaced hated him and was still a virgin. She flirts with Kieran and his knights. She initiates sex with him. They have a great relationship. She tries to prevent his early death by warning him that he will be killed by his own knight Hugh.
This short story is also published in the anthology Warrior.
Data: Story length: 118 pages. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: twelve. Setting: current day and 1067 England. Copyright: 2003. Genre: erotic time travel romance.
Don't get me wrong, I liked it, I liked both Kieran and Lizzie, but there was no connection between them besides lust.
Yes, this is a novella, but that's no excuse for not having a meaningful conversation. Would Kieran really have fallen for her if she had been in her original, dowdy body? He gave his wife a chance because she was beautiful.
Kieran the Black by Julia Templeton is a gripping, fast-paced time travel story about a woman named Lizzie going on a journey of a lifetime, becoming the woman she had been destined to become all along. The intimate scenes between Lizzie and her soul mate, Kieran, were sizzling hot and wasn't distasteful. It was beautifully written with details to draw you into the story.
Julia Templeton made amazing, loving characters that I would hate to see leave.
a quick and satisfying read. the plot wasn't too complicated and the hero wasn't a total alpha dumbass. the heroine was believable, if not a little too accepting of her situation. I liked this hero because a lot of times we encounter an alpha male and he's very demanding and oppressive, but to actually have an alpha who's not afraid to own up to his feelings is rather refreshing. to me this doesn't make him a pansy, but a real person who realizes what he has and what's important to him.
A complete let down. It was set up that Kieran The Black would be more Alpha, dominant and dark, than he actually was here. I mean, it's right there in his name and the title! Yet he's a sweetie. So that was a huge disappointment.
This is the second book I have read by this author and while I only gave the first book 2 stars, because it's what I describe as an empty, easy reading, it wasn't completely terrible. Unfortunately this was worse, even shorter, even more lacking in substance.
If you know of the 'churn em out' authors like Nicole Snow, Sam Crescent and Alexa Riley etc, who admit to churning out/writing the same basic plot in books over and over, which is just an excuse to write way too many, too overly long, sex scenes, then this is the medieval version of those.
I got so bored with the sex scenes that I literally zoned out while reading them. Just like I did the couple of times I tried some of the other prolific author books, like those I named above. That's really not good, when you get bored by the overly long sex scenes. I even actually prefer and want sex scenes in my reads but sometimes less really is more. World building, scene setting and a story with substance is needed also, and there just isn't much of those in this.
So, the heroine was, in a word, perky. She was too annoying. She gets sent back in time to fall in love with Kieran, the dark handsome medieval warrior. And she does. That's it. That's the story. It's basically like a frumpy, middle aged woman in a book shop, staring at the book cover of a sexy, half naked, long haired warrior on the cover, had a quick, brief fantasy of being with the warrior. And yeah, that's it. Five minute fantasy.
So she, this frumpy, divorced, almost 40 year old woman, wakes up in the body of an 18 year old, blond bomb-shell, medieval princess, married to the sexy, buff warrior hero, who never discovers the woman he thinks is his beautiful, young, eighteen year wife, is actually an almost forty year old, divorced, mousy haired, flabby bodied, small boobed, middle aged woman. Not my words, that's how she's described in the book.
It was kind of icky if I'm honest. Because, what happened to the girl? She's 18 and kicked out of her body? It's not mentioned what happened to her. The hero is duped into being with this middle aged divorcee, as the middle aged woman gets to steal the 18 year old girl's youth, body, and life, while the girl goes... poof.
Middle aged woman's five minute fantasy come true, where she wakes up as young, blonde beauty with a sexy warrior lover, husband. The end. Literally. So again only 2 star, because its not great but it's not the worst I've read. Oh, and if the author reads her reviews, it wasn't the only issue, but one that was glaring, the word 'lie' means to fib, and is the present tense of the word 'lay', which is what you should have used, ie, 'He lay her down', and 'The bodies lay scattered', etc.
I really wanted to like this book. It had so much potential- to have a hero who is supposed to have been feared by many and was supposed to have had a kick ass sword wasn't scary at all - he didn't get a lot of action except the bed kind of action and not in the battlefield. The one fight scene Kieran did have was meh... as for the sword - nothing, no where in sight. And this was supposed to have taken place during the medieval times so how do they know the meaning of the word "Bored?" It was mentioned twice or was it 3? The point is, the people during that time shouldn't have known that word - editing I guess. Nevertheless it was an OK kind of book - just don't expect the nail biting, sitting at the edge of your seat kind of book because it definitely isn't that kind of a book.
So much passion, so much pain. Time travel at its best. The Norman knight and the Saxon beauty caught in the middle of a great war. William married many of his knights to the Saxon daughters to make England one land.
This book was perfect... except for a few minor things that kept bugging me.
Lizzie in modern day, a middle aged woman, is crushing over the legend of kieran the black. An old lady in the museum helps her to time travel back into the virgin body of kieran's wife - whose family he had recently killed and then forced her to marry him.
At no point is he remorseful about this fact. In fact, lizzie heartlessly wonders once why the girl hadn't succumbed, if she'd been blind. If someone had killed my family nothing could make me attracted to that ugly.
The story itself between the two main protagonists was ideal but kieran's life did not start at that moment and neither did the girl's whose body was taken over.
Where did the girl go? Why had she been allowed to lie and try to starve herself to death? Giving a brief explanation of -the room had been too stifling, does not explain why kieran showed no compassion for his wife who had recently lost every member of her family, until her body became taken over by a confident mature woman.
I kept feeling sorry for the woman who had been cast out of her body to god knows where without a second thought and had never known love. There was never an explanation.
Being modern, lizzie was bold and at one time in his mind kieran compared her to whores. Not in a bad way but...
This is disturbing in two ways. Firstly, it would seem that he preferred a bold woman so that's why he had shown no interest in his wife. Was that his only attraction? Her only allure? Secondly, it's very nicely skimped over that he was having his 'leman' while married before lizzie came into the young girl's body.
All these things make me think this hero was not such a good man.
Lizzie never tells kieran that she travelled back in time. There is never an explanation for where the young girl's soul went. I would have been happy with anything really. Maybe she died the instant lizzie entered her body? Because she had been starving herself. It would have tied up loose ends nicely.
The story was great and I would recommend it if your mind doesn't pick everything apart like mine does. I'm still sitting here wondering - will he have another leman if lizzie angers him? Will he cheat on her? Grow uncaring? Because the only real connection they seem to have is... sex. What if she doesn't feel like it one night? Will he leave her to cry an go Bury himself in another? :/
This HAS to be my favorite novella of the year! It had everything; humor, romance, threats, suspense, fear, love, flirting and an adventure (with sword fighting and arrows flying).
I laughed so much throughout this book. The humor of the main character was priceless. If I were in her shoes, I would react the same way! (laughing now as I think about it.) Not too mention, the response from those around her.
I hope Julia does a whole series with this idea. It was way too good to want it to end so soon.
This indie time travel erotic romance novella has a fresh new story set up and is set in a time period which is not overused. I think the author did a good job with character development considering the length. I did not realize it was erotic romance when I purchased the book, so the sensuality was over the top for me, but someone else might love the steaminess. I gave it three stars because I liked the story, but I will warm you that it needs a professional editor.
I liked it. Since it is one of those books that I could go back and reread it, I gave it four star. I mean seriously how many book makes you want to reread it after you read it. It was a light read and of course should not have been listed as erotic but I guess that was the standard then compare to now.
Love this story. Lizzy and Kierran are a perfect match. They both have straightforward and sensible personalities so there is not a lot of drama in their relationship. Also, Lizzy's confidence in herself throughout the story was very refreshing. This is my second time reading the book and it was even better than the first!
What's not to love in a time travel book where the other side leads to a gorgeous medieval warrior? It's all been said. This was better then some and not as wonderful as others, but a good read for those who like this genre.
What girl wouldn't want to wake up in find herself back in time in the body of a beautiful young woman with the sinfully Hot "Kiernan the Black" lusting over you... Yes Please...
