Jane is a woman without a past. She wakes up in the back of a car with handcuffs on her wrists, with a man intent on doing her harm. She escapes, but into the murky underworld of New Orleans. A mysterious man shadows her and strange memories tantalize her. People want to hurt her and an unearthly creature stalks the night. Insanity might be a possibility but everything is horrifyingly real.
This sultry world is anything but ordinary. Instead it is full of black magics and curious beasts and the thoughts of a man who can read Jane’s mind.
Jane must solve the mystery of who she is or be forever lost.
C.L. Bevill has been in the U.S. Army, cleaned floors, a graphic illustrator, a therapist, and a stay at home mother. She lives in the Alabama area with her husband and daughter and keeps plugging away at the next great American novel.
Jane wakes up in the back of a car, handcuffed and with a bad feeling, a dangerous man and no memory...thus starts a very good story. This is the third in the Lake people series and for me the best so far. The story focuses on Jane, so called because she is a Jane Doe. She has no idea who she is or what her life is and this is a story of resilience and of detective work. Behind her misfortune it soon become clear are forces beyond her control. The story involves the folklore of Louisiana and all the vibrancy, history and creepiness of the area. It also involves the Lore of the Lake People. The gifted/cursed la famille and the great catfish (you have to read these books to understand this). There is a love story within this but also a mystery and a fair bit of thriller. A book that starts with a burst, slows and then builds to a good ending. A lot of "who are the bad guys" guessing and "who can be trusted, who can't?" A very enjoyable book to listen to and I enjoyed the narration. There are some production issues in this book, not loads but enough to be a little irritating. Overall 5 stars narration 4 stars story 5 stars.
Maybe because I read the 3 books back to back, I found this a little repetitive and samey. Still and enjoyable read and I would recommend the series on
I first stumbled across this author with her book ‘Veiled Eyes’, which I highly recommend. Veiled Eyes is the first book in the Lake People Series. The premise behind the Lake People is a tight-knit small community that has telepathic gifts (they call it veiled eyes) between them in addition to striking gold eyes. They call each other La Famille.
This is book three of the Lake People series. In this book, Jane wakes up in the back of a car with handcuffs and a dangerous man. She has no memory of who she is and how she got there. She manages to escape the man but lands in a hospital. She hears a voice in her head, receives warnings of impending trouble, and avoids being taken by the same man she narrowly escaped from. She also discovers a mysterious man following her and memories of her previous life fade in and out. There is also a mysterious creature that hunts her at night.
So the Prologue had me hooked and once I began the story, I had to start and stop reading it so much that I completely forgot what had happened in the Prologue (it is important to the story) in addition, the beginning pace of this book wasn’t quite as quick as the other two Lake People books which didn’t really lend itself to me staying up all night to read it. However about half way through, the action started happening as we saw Jane start to piece things together. Jane is a very intelligent woman, which I loved because the author could have written her as a woe- is-me victim type. She learns how to be self-sufficient in a city in which she has some vague recollections of but nothing for certain.
As usual, I enjoyed this book, the same as I did the other Lake People books. It is not literary greatness and the whole series is a bit over the top and unrealistic but isn’t that why we read? Don’t we need a little escape now and then? I would recommend this and the other two books in the series plus this is only $0.99 right now on Barnes and Noble for Nook! You can’t lose with that price!
Book Reveiw Of "Arcanorum" The Lake People Book 3 Author C.L. Bevill Narration Melanie Crawley Length 13 hours and 5 mins
I would like to start by thanking C.L. Bevill for having such a great imagination and sharing her gift by writing such an entertaining and unusual series of books, and Melanie Preston Lewis for giving me the opportunity to listen to and review this great book.
This is a cracking series of 4 books, after each title you are left wondering what the Author will come up with next, and how the story will be incorporated into the series of books, so far I have listened to the first three books in this series and each one is an improvement on the previous all gripping stories with a twist of the magic of the lake people and their unusual abilities.
The story starts by telling you about a Jane who was was almost murdered, and then it jumps to her waking up in the back of a car, handcuffed scared and no memory of whom she is or what had happened to her. We are taken Jane's journey of trying to find who out she is and recover her memories. Full of voodoo, black magic, and mystical beasts will she succeed and find her true love and happiness.
Although the book is part of a series, as with the other books it can be read/listened to as a a stand alone novel. The narrator is the same as in the previous books, and has a very strong Southern American accent, some of the words are rather long and I found that speeding the book really helped, I increased the speed to 1.40 on Audible and this really helped.
I saw that some people did not like this book as much as some of the others in the series. Maybe it has been too long since I read the others, but I enjoyed this one very much. It was different, that's for sure. The book starts out with a man hurrying to save the woman that he loves when he hears her screams in his head. Now this is not unusual for the Lake People. Many of them can "hear" other family members or loved ones in their heads if they are fairly close by. When the man takes the woman to a "witch" to save her life, that is a little unusual. It seems this witch owes the family a favor. Now the book goes forward in time to a woman who is trying to free herself from her captor in the middle of a traffic jam. We are introduced to "Jane Doe" as she flees into traffic and ends up in the hospital. She has no idea who she is, or who her captor was. She is alone and nobody seems to really believe her story. On top of that, there are people, and a big, bad "dog," after her. She does not know who to trust, or why people keep trying to capture her. This is not even including the voice in her head that keeps telling her to run. I think you will enjoy this tale that includes witches, along with other New Orleans voodoo/hoodoo creatures.
This is the third book in The Lake People Series. Again, there are typos here and there but nothing I couldn't look over. This one begins with a robbery and introduces you to Jane Doe. Jane finds herself handcuffed in the back of a car but manages to escape. Next, she awakes in a hospital and can't remember who she is or where she came from. She soon finds herself wandering the streets of New Orleans with a Roux-Ga-Roux (something like a werewolf) hunting her by night and a mysterious man stalking her by day. The mystery begins to unravel as she uncovers clues and begins to discover who she is. I think my favorite book in this series is the second one, Disembodied Bones, but this one wasn't bad. Magic is added to the mix and gives it a different flavor from the two books that precede it.
Yippee! I was so happy to get this book. From the first page, it left you with the question, how is she going to answer that? Well, I read the book and it took a long while to put it all together, and I was very happy with how she put it together. On the other hand, I thought with Jane's story there would be a little more interaction with Anna. Plus there is the big unanswered question. I did read it quickly, so is it possible I missed the answer? perhaps.... I just don't think so. In point of fact, I wasn't looking for the answer anymore when I got to the end. So very good writing, I completely forgot to look for an explanation. I love this series, and hope she continues writing more of them!
If this were a free book, I would have given up on it sooner. As it is, $1.99 meant I read to about the halfway point, but eventually gave up anyway.
The book isn't *bad*, but it doesn't live up to the quality of the previous volumes in the series. I think what it lacks is something to make me care about our heroine. She wakes up not even knowing her name, which makes it tough to identify with her and see why her history has made her who she is. In addition, even though there's magic, it doesn't feel as magical as Bevill's previous works.
Another Lake People book. Jane Doe tries to strangle the man who has handcuffed her and tortured her while the car they are riding in is stopped in traffic. She jumps out of the car and runs straight into a jeep. When she wakens in the hospital she doesn't know who she is or how she got there. She has scars and the body of a drug addict bit no withdrawal symptoms. She does know someone is out to get her though. And what is the large dog like creature prowling the French Quarter. A suspenseful read involving love, sorcery and revenge.
Seems there are two different versions of this book on Barnes & Noble. The copy I downloaded is about 500 pages short of the copy my husband downloaded. There is nothing to identify that there is a difference in the product description except for the file size. (Who looks at that?) They appear the same but I find no clear explanation as to why this is. I may have to start over with my husbands copy of the book. Frustrating
Once again, I am bewitched by Ms. Bevill's Lake People series. "Arcanorum" is the 3rd in the series and does not disappoint. Witches, curses, magic, New Orleans bayous, mystery, fantastical storyline, and my favorite, loup garou. I've never read a book with the loup garou in it that I absolutely did not love. Brilliant!
A series I really enjoyed reading. The use of french words through out the the book, reminded me of Louisiana. It was like taking a trip home without ever getting in the car. I highly recommend this series if you're looking for something different to read.
This book is fantastic! Very suspenseful, and with fascinating lore. Ms. Bevill brings the mythology of Louisiana to life, and truly makes you feel for Jane and the other characters. I've actually gone back and re-read this, and I wish that she would write more Lake People novels!
I'm loving this series. I was a bit worried that the blurbs show 'disconnected' leads, but turns out that there is connections after all. There's not a hell of a lot of cross over in the books, but enough to keep them all together.
My daughter recommended the C.L. Bevill's Lake People series and I have really enjoyed the cajun flavoring. Nice combination of intrigue, mystery, romance and supernatural.
Her books have gotten better with everyone she writes. Love the little bit of romance thrown in. This is a great series that deserves more recognition.
I have read many of C.L. Bevill's books and enjoy all of them. She tells a great story. Even the series could stand individually. This book was hard to put down.
I really enjoy reading these books! I live in Louisiana, but not from here. I have enjoyed learning new Cajun French words. Thank you for writing good books.
