Nikki & Michael #4

Kiss the Night Goodbye

Rate this book
Nikki James is just an ordinary, risk-taking, psychically inclined private eye until she hooks up with Michael Kelly. Now she is something more: one of the few, the chosen, the magic-wielding undercover operatives of the Damask Circle, an organization protecting humanity from a rising tide of evil. She wants nothing more than to pass the Circle’s strict entry exams so she can get on with the business of planning her wedding to Michael. But she quickly realizes that buying a wedding dress is the least of her worries.

One hundred years ago, Michael Kelly hunted down and killed the sorcerer responsible for murdering his lover. Now the brother of that man is out for revenge, and he intends to destroy all that Michael holds dear in the process. When Michael is kidnapped, the trail leads Nikki to a dusty ghost town surrounded by a potent magical barrier, leaving her to battle a madman alone with only her wits, strength, and the one psychic gift she cannot fully control. And to make matters even worse, Michael no longer seems to remember who she is.

I don't know if it's the fault of the bloody reading slump but I was just super bored with this book. I loved this series so much about 10 years ago but it left me kind of "meh". That sucks.

Nikki and Michael are back in the final story in Keri Arthur’s vampire romance series. Nikki has been busting her backside improving her fitness and her control of her psychic abilities since Michael has done the decent thing and not only asked Nikki to marry him, but has allowed her into the darker and more dangerous side of his life.

The story opens with Nikki once again trying to pass the Circle’s entry exams and gets more than she bargained for in her latest attempt—someone trying to kill her. Thanks to the link forged between her and Michael that has increased not only her powers but Michael’s too, Nikki escapes without much trouble. The only problem is that her bad luck isn’t about to end there. Someone shoots and kidnaps the lovely slice of vampire that is Michael and it’s down to Nikki, masquerading as Seline because the bad guy is fairly intent on getting some payback for an event that happened in the past involving Seline and Michael, goes out to save the day.

Nikki’s problems get worse from there. The town where she must go is surrounded by a magical barrier and everyone is acting as they had a few hundred years back. Michael doesn’t remember her, and she certainly doesn’t look like herself, and she has to be careful because while the barrier has put a stop to most of her powers, her “personal magic” that comes in the form of pyrokinetic abilities given to her by the people she met in book two of the series, is still active. If Mr Bad Guy finds out that she’s got some tricks up her sleeve, he’ll kill her and Michael, and probably most of the town. Michael has a fairly hefty spell tattooed into his back that Nikki needs to wash off, but it isn’t going to be easy when he can’t remember her. It takes all of her wits to convince him to help her and to make him remember her, and to defeat the bad guy in this one.

It was good to see another new location, although caves did creep back in as there’s plenty of mine shafts in the area to cause Nikki’s usual panic attacks and Michael’s worry (when he starts remembering her). I enjoyed the difference in their relationship in this one, although found it a bit questionable in parts since she basically seduces Michael whilst looking like someone else. Talk about psychologically damaging the guy when he eventually remembers and realises that he’s been messing around with Seline… well, Nikki looking like Seline, but the outside package is the physical attractant in sexual relationships. That must have disturbed him.

I liked the bad guys in this one. They’re nice and sinister and have a nasty objective, although I think they could have put up more fight. Repetition was back again, and Michael is going to need to get stronger bones because I swear he’s broken his arm in the past two books! My only real downer on this one was the repetition, and some very horrendous editing that drove me insane. The author breaks one of the cardinal rules of writing – remember what you called things! She goes from calling the town “Hartwood” in the first few chapters, to “Hartwell”, and eventually back to “Hartwood” for the final few chapters. There’s also other glaring editing errors. Again, the book dropped marks for poor editing. In fact, it was so bad in parts that I was cringing as I read it. This means that yet again my reading enjoyment was spoiled. It could have been a wonderful book with a better editor on hand to fix the errors and point out all the repetition. There’s also some amazing spelling problems like the word “wlndowsill” in chapter 15. Nice. The relationship does grow nicely in this book though, and at least Nikki isn’t moaning at Michael all the time. I liked the progression in their powers and how tied to each other they were, but I had hoped for a stronger ending too. Call me an old romantic, but I want to see a wedding, not just be teased about it. Definitely read this book if you’ve read the first three. Definitely read them in order.

Kiss the Night Goodbye is the 4rd and final book in the Nikki & Michael series, so some series spoilers may exist.

Reading Order:
Dancing with the Devil (Nikki & Michael, #1) by Keri Arthur Hearts in Darkness (Nikki & Michael, #2) by Keri Arthur Chasing the Shadows (Nikki & Michael, #3) by Keri Arthur Kiss the Night Goodbye (Nikki & Michael, #4) by Keri Arthur

In Kiss the Night Goodbye Nikki & Michael's relationship is going strong. He's working to be more flexible and has given in to Nikki's insistence that he let her join the Circle. Seline, one of the leaders of the Circle, tells Michael that someone has tried to kill her. They are now on the hunt for a mole within the Circle.

Meanwhile, Nikki is on the last phase of her training when something goes seriously wrong and the protections in place stop working. Have they found one of the moles?

The major battle takes place and it is like the supernatural wild west. You will not want to miss it. Seems all is not as they thought and a vampire gone mad, they thought was dead may still be alive. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this series. Each book got better and better. I loved the tension and the give and take between Nikki and Michael. Each of them had to learn to give and receive to make their relationship work well.

Keri Arthur is one of my favorites. I'll continue to read books she writes.

This is the fourth and last Nikki and Michael book. Since they are all re-released from years ago, I guess there is no hope for another one and that’s a shame. The is also the fourth one in the last couple of months that I have read in this series. As I have said before, it’s hard to review so many books in a series in a row unless major things change in the story.

One major change in this story involves Nikki finally going to work for the Circle that Michael works for. So now she finally is able to truly be with Michael instead of sitting home waiting sometimes for months at a time. Since Nikki is Michael’s thrall, if Michael gets killed then Nikki does too and I have to say that would be a major problem wondering all the time how dangerous the job is that Michael is working and if she is going to just drop dead never knowing why. So now she is getting trained in ways that would probably put the FBI training to shame.

The other major change involves Michael losing his memory of Nikki. Lots of drama to get to this point but I am not ruining it for readers by telling how this all happens. Suffice it to say that Nikki has to work with Michael without him even knowing what century he is in. Intrigued? I was and it made for a lot of twists and turns and murder and mayhem and it really worked as a plot twist.

Ms. Arthur always comes up with very interesting villains. Not only are they interesting but they’re always so heinous that they don’t have any redeeming qualities. Well she has outdone herself this time. Not only is this villain a horrible excuse for a being (leaving the word human out on purpose) but he’s all sorts of yucky to boot. As in ewwwwww.

I think this was the best of the series even though I loved the first book. But having said that, I have enjoyed all four of these books and I am going to miss reading about this pair. We’ve had four books to get to know them, and I have really loved their continuing love story and all the crazy adventures they got involved in. It was a pretty great series Ms. Arthur and I am glad I got to read them all. I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I rated this one 4.5 stars.

This is the 4th and final book in the Nikki and Michael series & I'd strongly recommend that you read the series in order. Although I won't give spoilers for Kiss the Night Goodbye in this review it will be impossible not to include things that may spoil the previous books so if you're new to the series I'd suggest you read the reviews for Dancing with the Devil. This is a series I really loved so I'd definitely recommend you check it out!

Now that Michael has finally agreed to let Nikki join the Circle so she can join him on his missions but first she has to pass her training course. Nikki has worked hard to improve her fitness and her psychic abilities but it she doesn't pass the entry exam then her upcoming wedding will have to be put on hold. The exam seems to be going well - until one of the instructors tries to kill her that is. It appears that one of Michael's enemies has managed to infiltrate the Circle and they are investigating when Michael is kidnapped.

With Michael being held hostage in a psychic dead zone Nikki is forced to go and find her man. They are facing their most deadly enemy without their strongest weapons. Worse still Michael doesn't even remember who Nikki is. Nikki is going to have to keep her wits about her if she is going to get them through this - especially if she wants to do it in time for their wedding.

I really enjoyed the other books in this series and Kiss the Night Goodbye didn't disappoint. If anything this last book in the series was even more action packed and there was still plenty of romance despite Michael's memory loss. I love the growth we have seen in both of the characters throughout the series and although Keri Arthur has tied up the ends of the series well I would love it if she would bring out more adventures with Nikki and Michael in the future. I almost didn't want to finish the book as I wasn't ready for their story to end. I'd definitely recommend the series & I know it is one I'll be reading again in the future.

Great ending to a good series

This is the fourth and last book of the Nikki and Michael series. This one starts with Nikki and Jake trying to become members of The Circle, the group that Michael works for. Not only is Nikki trying to pass all the test so she can begin working with Michael, she’s planning their wedding. Though Nikki’s powers seem to be growing and that’s not the only problem she has to deal with. Someone has infiltrated The Circle trying to kill Seline and Michael and will stop at nothing to get what they want.

They find out who did infiltrate the Circle and go to his apartment and when they do Michael goes after them since he was standing outside since he can’t get in. He chases them down an alley then out of nowhere he gets shot with a silver bullet. He gets kidnapped and Nikki chases after him.

Seline calls in Nikki and informs her about what’s going on. There’s a vampire who is out to kill them both and has kidnapped Michael so he can bring his brother back from the dead and has sent a note saying that if Seline doesn’t show up at a certain time in a certain town that he has a list of people in The Circle and he’s willing to kill them all. She wants to send Nikki in her place, with magic changing her appearance, hoping that will break the course of events and stop everything, though will it be enough?

When Nikki shows up , looking like Seline, she finds Michael only to find that he’s lost all memory of her. Someone has put magic on him so deep he can’t remember her or anything else. He thinks it’s a certain part of time in his past. Will Nikki be quick enough to change the magic to stop what happening and to get to the alter in time?

This one was a good book. Seeing Michael and Nikki work totally different then they way they do in the other books was refreshing. Plus Nikki really showed what she was capable of in this book. Not that she didn’t before, she had to make it really work now.

Kiss the Night Goodbye is a fast paced, dark, final adventure for the Nikki and Michael series.

This story starts with Nikki trying to pass her Circle “final examination”. Something goes wrong and what is supposed to be a training exercise turns into a life and death situation. It is quickly discovered that the circle has been infiltrated by an enemy’s minions.

When Nikki and Michael go to investigate the betrayers home, they are separated, and Michael is captured by the minions. 100 years ago, Michael killed the sorcerer responsible for murdering his girlfriend. Now the sorcerer's brother is back and wants revenge. But he is no ordinary opponent, he is a vampire, shifter and a sorcerer.

Nikki surrenders herself to the sorcerer, who is holding a historical ghost town hostage along with other inhabitants that he has captured. The town is blocked by a magical barrier so no one can enter or leave. Now trapped, Nikki must outwit the bad guy and help Michael discover who he is since it seems his memory is caught 100 years in the past.

This story is very dark, Keri Arthur's writing paints a vivid, detailed and gruesome mental image of the plot as it unfolds. Arthur creates an antagonist who personifies evil, it practically oozes out his pores.

We've watched Nikki fight for her relationship with Michael in the past but this time she must reignite Michael's memories with their love and bond or all will be lost.

Kiss the Night Goodbye wraps up the Nikki & Michael series. We got more action, more Nikki taking the lead, more gore and much more evil villain. Keri Arthur ties up the loose ends and gives us hope that more may come. Lots of "mores" makes for a fantastic read.

I received this ARC copy of Kiss the Night Goodbye from Dell in exchange for an honest review. This book is set for publication October 29, 2013.

Fourth and final installment of Nikki and Michael (but the series has a spin off in the Damask Circle), Kiss the Night Goodbye follows the the main couple into their first mission together. Well, kind of :) Micheal gets kidnapped by the enemy foretold in book 3 and Nikki rides to the rescue. In a sense literally, as they are sent to a Western town that a sorcerer has created to recall a series a murders happened a century before.

As in all the series romance and mystery share pages in a nice blend of PNR. The plot is unfortunately very much similar to the previous three books and so does the villain. Repetition is one of the only two faults one can find in this series. The other is the lack of world-building. Here I felt it keenly. I couldn't understand some point of magic/world that I believed were important, like how did the villain knew who she was (sorry, I can't be more specific without big spoilers :). Or how their power mixed and matched (ok, this is something even the Circle wanted to know). But above all why when all magic was stopped some of theirs wasn't. (Sounded too convenient...)

Nikki and Michael's relationship is both new and old, but nothing yet defined. But then they have been barely together. I'm sorry I will not be able to see them again after their life/romance had time to settle.

Book 4 of this series is by far the best.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Nikki and Michael. I thought the relationship portrayed in this book was deeper and more understanding.

It was also nice getting an insight into Michael's mysterious past.

I received an e-copy of this book from the publishers at NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I am steadily on the track to read every book ever published by the esteemed Keri Arthur. I have read the Riley Jensen Guardian series, I have read the spin off Dark Angel series, and now, after reading this book, I will have completed her Nikki & Michael series. Only a few more series to go before I have completely read every work of literature this author has produced. That is how much I enjoy her writing and her story lines. That is how greatly Keri Arthur draws me into the worlds she creates. I was anxious to see what happens in the last book of the series. I wondering if Nikki & Michael would be able to slip off into marital bliss without any sort of paranormal big baddie coming after them and ruining their plans.

Nikki is well on her way to completing training with the Damask Circle. She is just one trial away from being able to accompany Michael on his missions as not just his partner but as his wife. Little did she know but a blast from Michael's past is not ready to let him be happy and content in his life for long. Nikki is devastated when Michael is kidnapped and forced into a magical ghost town in which he no longer remembers who she is or that he even loves her. In his mind, all he knows is that he is hunting down an enemy that took a deceased lover from him. He is out for revenge that has long since been sated. It is up to Nikki to infiltrate the magic riddled town and rescue it's inhabitants and the man she loves.

Michael awakens in a town he recognizes but the only emotions he feels is one of rage and hungry for blood, figuratively and literally. Michael is struggling with his vampire instincts and it seems the strange woman who seems to be irritatingly getting under his skin is the only one who understand what he is and yet does not fear him. Instead he feels a barrage of love, attraction, arousal, and trust radiating from her. He does not know the woman set along his path of destruction, but he knows she means more to him than she is suppose to.

This book was a little odd for me, as opposed to the other books in the series. Nikki goes undercover as another operative in order to rescue Michael and yet Michael still can't keep his hands off her despite her looking completely different. And him taking her as his lover almost feels like him cheating on Nikki even though he's not? It's just... weird. But it gave the story line a lot of depth. Getting to watch Michael fall in love with Nikki all over again was a rare treat. Usually characters fall in love and you just get to see the little milestones of a relationship. A reader doesn't get to experience them falling in love again without copious amounts of anguish in the process. I liked that Nikki didn't fall to pieces over Michael not remembering her. She was strong and determined. Got to love a strong female lead!

All in all, this book was a good ending to the series. Although, the way the book ended, it doesn't really SEEM like an end. I would expect another book if I wasn't sure there wasn't going to be another.

Kiss the Night Goodbye will make you fall in love with Nikki & Michael all over again just as the characters are.

A great conclusion to the Nikki & Michael series. This entire series was filled with action, suspense, romance and this final novel was a great addition to the series. Years ago Michael killed a vampire after he murdered Michael's lover. Now that vampire's brother is out for revenge and pulls Michael and Nikki in to a historical reenactment to change the outcome of who died and who lives on. With shapeshifters, vampires, mind control, and innocents all mixed together Michael and Nikki don't know who they can trust especially since Michael had his memories wiped. Can Nikki kick start his memories before he considers her an enemy and not the love of his life? Loved this series, sad to see it go but remain a big fan of Keri Arthur!

Ahh my heart is so full!
This was such a perfect way to end the series even though I feel like Arthur could've easily continued with it.
The connection between Nikki and Michael is just great and they work so well as a team even if Michael tries to still stop it.
I loved how we saw a little more into Michaels past and even though he's 360 years old I like that he's not invincible.
The concept of their love being so strong it even overrides magic abd memory loss is just swoon worthy.
The book was so fast paced and you just got hooked in straight away and devoured the book.

While this series was imaginative, the first book was a painfully bad read (maybe because this was one of the author's earliest books). The next 3 got better with each installment, leading up to this last novel, which was not bad at all. However, the painfully cringe romance, the repetitive nature of the verbal exchange between the main protagonists, and the threadbare buildup from strangers to supposed soulmates, makes this series a "better avoided" one. There are too many other series out there, which are much more worthy of a read. I just couldn't stand the repetitive banter between Michael and Nikki: it got jarringly nauseating, very soon.

Great finish but I hope not the last in this series!

I really like this series and love the chemistry between these two. The th I vs they get into are really different from all the other books I have read I think because Nikki also ahs words herself. Great fourth book but I do hope Miss Arthur will write more about Michael and Nikki. Love this series. But don't start here you have to read the other three books first or you will miss so much and not i understand a lot of what is going on between the two.

Keri Arthur will always be one of my favorite authors. I love the worlds she builds and her characters are great. This is the only series I have ever read by her that I struggled with. Can't even tell you why really. I had to finish it but it was a little slow going.
This book had the creepy going for it. Dark sexual abuse by one screwed up bad guy, lots of action and death. Good book. Just not the great I'm used to.

Some of the dialogue was very mechanical, I'm not sure if it was intentional because Michael was under compulsion or something else. Interesting to see how things keep unfolding between them and their powers.

Seriously cannot *stand* some of the tropes in this series, but the world building is good.

Whole lot of rape over the course of the series and agency removal as both background and foreground are seriously not my thing.
