A little lie can change the course of everything. . .
Like every other eighteen-year-old in love, Olivia has dreams of spending forever with the love of her life. Luke is all she’s ever wanted – until she overhears something she was never meant to. In a matter of seconds, Olivia’s heart is shattered. Olivia handles it the only way she knows how - she runs- leaving behind her family, friends and the boy she loves.
Seeking comfort and an escape, Olivia finds it in resident bad boy Deacon. He’s everything Luke isn’t – and that’s fine with Olivia.
Now, seven years later, Olivia is older, wiser and headed back to Chicago looking forward to a fresh start and reconnecting with her best friend Pyper. What she doesn’t expect, is to come face to face with the boy she left behind and discover that even though she may have left, her feelings for him didn’t.
Can Olivia put aside the pain in her heart and trust Luke? Will the ties to her past ever let her go, or will she continue to let her life be affected by pretty little lies?
Author Jennifer Miller is an award-winning and best-selling author. Her books are contemporary romance and the focus ranges from new adults, romantic comedies and sports romance.
This book is truly a fabulous love story of two people who were True soul mates that were meant to spend their life together. I truly loved this book and connected with the story and the characters on so many levels, for a debut novel for a new author, she has done an amazing and outstanding job.
The book starts off with Olivia is a free-lance Journalist finalizing her divorce to Deacon, a controlling cheating ass that you will hate every moment of this book. She is ending her marriage of four years, which only happened after Luke broke her heart and she fled to Boston. Olivia has now decided to head back to her hometown to start fresh with her very best friend Pyper, a fun loving sassy redhead who everyone would love to have for a BFF.
“It really is true what they say; a true friend will see the tears pouring down your face while the other believe the smile you are faking”
Pyper has decided to help get her friend out there, they will sign up to “Date Me” online dating service and to give speed dating a try. I have to say the guys she dated and the speed dating, they were hysterical, thoroughly enjoyed those scenes. My favorite was her last date, OMG, I think I would have went running for the hills.
But in the midst of her giving the dating scene a try, she decides to have a girls night out with Pyper and have a little fun with some guys they meet but they have other plans for Pyper and Oliva and when they won’t take no for an answer:
“Get the F@#K off her” I freeze. I can’t move. I know that voice It Haunts my dreams and memories
Do you believe that everything happens for a reason? Do you believe in second chances? And Do you believe in true love and soul mates? Well fate has brought Olivia and Luke back together and have given them a second chance, but is there love still there and can she forgive him:
Olivia, I have so much I want to say, so much I need to tell you, so much I want to ask you”
Right from the first moment they meet again, the sparks and chemistry is still there, but has 7 years changed them and their love. Can Olivia trust to give her heart in with Luke and can she find herself and trust herself again. And like every good book, you cannot forget the mole, AkA Deacon, who is still lurking in the background.
Luke and Olivia are two amazing characters that I truly loved, and it took some time for the author to build the foundation of the story, that foundation she built truly made the rest of the story and the characters truly amazing and so enjoyed this book. It’s a book of true love, with “OMG that was hot” moments, funny moments that will have you laughing, heartwarming swoon moments, and moments that will have you in suspense, such a great mix to make a fabulous read you will have a hard time putting down. And best of all, lots of great fashion tips, Jennifer Miller, seriously loved all your fashion tips at the beginning of each chapter, can’t wait for book two to get some more!
Truly an fabulous book, can't wait for book two and the many more books to come, you definitely have a new fan now
"I chose to believe the pretty little lies he told me."
Seven years ago Olivia ran away from home to Boston after the only guy she ever loved broke her heart. She went to school, met Deacon, got married and became a journalist. Now seven years later Olivia is heading back home to Chicago after finding out her husband is a lying cheating ass. Fortunately Olivia has an awesome best friend, Pyper, who she is going to move in with until she gets her life back on track. "I want more. I need more. I deserve more."
Together Pyper and Olivia decide to start playing the dating field. Olivia ends up going on a series of dates which are quite comical and ends up speed dating which doesn't exactly go according to plan. One night the girls decide to go to the new club in town and a couple guys get a little to touchy feely. As the guys are being hauled out on their asses Olivia hears a voice she never thought she'd hear again. "I know that voice. It haunts my dreams and my memories." Now Luke wants a chance to explain what happened seven years ago and make things right with Olivia. "I don't believe in coincidence. I know we were put back into one another's paths again for a reason. I refuse to let you just walk away from me again."
Will Olivia give true love a second chance or will she move on from her past completely? "I'm putting my heart out there again. I just hope he doesn't break it into pieces again."
Ladies all I'm going to say is Luke is AMAZING!!! Jennifer Miller if Olivia doesn't want him please send him my way!! Our initials are on the tree! ;)
This book is FANTASTIC :) Am I biased? Well of course! Seriously, I put my heart and soul into this novel and I hope you enjoy its combination of friendship, fun, love and self discovery. XO
Credete che tutto accade per una ragione? Credete nelle seconde possibilità in amore?
This beautiful, romantic, thrilling story begins with two teenagers who are so in love with each other that they are destined to be together forever. Until one day a little lie changes everything. Olivia is so broken and torn up inside that in haste she decides to move away to Boston. Never forgetting the boy she left behind she moves on and starts a new chapter in life. The story picks back up 7 years later where Olivia is in the process of divorcing a man she met in college. A relationship that has been volatile and borderline abusive which leaves Olivia lost and heart broken again. Olivia decides it's time to move back Chicago but not before her ex husband threatens her because she won't give in to his demands. "Here me now Olivia, This isn't over." "Are you threatening me, Deacon?" Infuriated, tears start to fill my eyes. It isn't only the physical pain that causes this hurt, but the continued dread and terror he can still invoke..
As he slips by me he whispers in my ear,"See you soon princess."
Coming home is really hard for her. Trying to forget the man who was abusive and not forgetting the boy she has always loved, her best friend Pyper comes up with a plan to help move past all the ugly and hurt she's been through. After one night Olivia runs into the one guy who has never left her thoughts or her heart..
Omg, let me tell you about Luke.. I fell in love with this man the moment I met him. He is absolutely perfect.. He's so hot, sexy and romantic.. Like serious BBF material. This perfect man left me breathless so many times in the book. Seriously so swoon worthy. Luke is determined to get Olivia back. He never stopped loving her and he will stop at nothing to have her back in his life.
"I've never forgotten you Olivia. Never. I can't let you go again. Don't ask me to"
"I want to make sure you hear me. I. Want. You. Back," "Make no mistake of what my intentions are here. I will not lose you again. I wouldn't survive it a second time. Maybe that makes me an asshole I don't know, but what I'm trying to be is a guy that will do anything because he desperately wants his girl back."
I could go on and on.. I have have pages and pages highlighted.
I loved the characters in this book. They were really well developed and the interactions amongst them were spot on. I seriously laughed out loud in parts and cried in others. The last 40% of the book had me so hooked I was begging for more at the end. Jennifer Miller really won me over with this beautiful story of second chance love that has a dark twist within it. A Must Read!!
Effing cliffhanger!!! Seriously!! This one was ok. I got bored a few times, but overall it was ok. I'm not a fan of god damn cliffhangers so that left me kinda pissed. I will read the next book though. I do like how her old boyfriend went after her. Made for fun times and dates. Deacon was so creepy, I thought what a fucktard!
Ciao, readers.
Buona lettura.
Olivia and Luke were high school sweethearts, with a love so intense and a connection so strong, that they knew without a doubt they were meant to be. As they prepared to set off on their own to college together, they are unexpectedly torn apart when a pretty little lie comes between them. Olivia heads to college in Boston while Luke tries to follow through with their initial plans, without Olivia. Now on their own in different cities, they spend the years of their young adult lives trying to replace the love they once had. Olivia ends up with a failed marriage, and decides to return back home to Chicago.
As she tries to start over with the help of her enthusiastic best friend Pyper, Olivia slowly begins returning to the happy, outgoing person she once was. Olivia jumps back (more like pushed by Pyper) into the dating scene and we are treated to some hilarious situations she somehow survives. She knows that Luke is somewhere in town, but is unprepared for the moment they finally come face-to-face. Luke, dreaming of this day for 7 long years, makes it very clear that he would like to resolve their past issue and work on being friends again. With so much hurt and sadness still weighing her down, we watch as Olivia becomes reaquainted with Luke and tries to determine what her heart really wants.
Olivia is a great character. Her humor and love for fashion and decor are evident throughout the book. I enjoyed watching her grow. She was smart enough to realize that the relationship she was in was not a healthy one and despite being forced into the situation of leaving her husband Deacon, she realized she really was not that heartbroken about it. It wasn't the same sadness and devestation she felt when she lost Luke. Being back in a safe and comfortable environment, she slowly starts coming back out of her isolated shell and begins to work on what she really wants in life. She owns up to past errors and judgements, and uses them to better herself.
Luke...I LOVE LUKE! He is a successful businessman, smart, determined, patient and full of love. I loved seeing his personality being revealed through his interactions with Olivia. He is a funny, sexy, romantic guy! Readers will definitely fall in love with him as much as I did...it's really impossible not to! There's a lot revealed about his character throughout the book from his interactions with Olivia and Pyper. His heartfelt speeches made me swoon, and I often wondered how Olivia was strong enough to resist him! I wish I could say more about him, but I do not want to include any spoilers. Just please trust me, you'll love him and want him for yourself.
Pyper is Olivia's best friend. A type of best friend that every girl in this world needs. Pyper is fun, loving, giving, and caring. She knows Olivia so well, there's no way that Olivia could lie to her...Pyper sees right through it. She pushes Olivia towards better things, but can read Olivia in a way that she knows when to stop. Pyper and Olivia have such a strong bond that often times words aren't even needed, they know exactly how to take care of one another.
The humor embedded within this book was right up my alley. A little sassy, and some "OMG, I can't believe that happened!" moments had me laughing out loud! I loved the fashion tips at the start of each chapter, which were strategically aligned with some form of hilarious situation within that portion of the book. Olivia's dates were so entertaining and funny, I don't know how she was able to follow through with some of them...I think I would have run away from a few!
Watching Olivia and Luke work towards finding a relationship that they were both comfortable in was great. They struggled through sorting out their feelings, letting go of the past, and determining what each of them truly wanted from each other and the future. It was heartbreaking to see Olivia as she was flooded with memories from the past. Many memories gave me butterflies in my tummy as she recalled significant moments in their relationship, from the time they first met, through their initial declarations of love, until the moment the lie tore them apart. There were many happy memories but I couldn't help feeling the sadness as I empathized with her when realizing it wasn't what she currently had, everything that could have been, everything that was lost. When Luke wormed his way back into her life, I loved seeing him work hard to regain her trust. I loved seeing the determination he had for proving to her that she was never forgotten. I loved watching as her eyes were opened to the truth and as she began living confidently, in control of her own life, and following her heart. Seeing their relationship grow and re-develop was sweet and gratifying.
With a twist that still has my heart pounding, Jennifer Miller concludes her debut novel and has me waiting on the edge of my seat for the continuation of Luke and Olivia's story! I definitely look forward to reading the next book!
I truly enjoyed this book! The humor, storyline, loveable characters, and an ending that left me wanting more all added up to be a great read for me.
I received an ARC from the author for an honest review.
“Being confronted with the actuality of an event is completely different than talking about what one might do IF it happened.”
I adored this debut novel from Jennifer Miller, it was laugh out loud, fall in love, perfection!! You can’t help but fall in love with these characters and with this story, it’s a story about finding and being in love with your soul mate, you know that one true love that is stronger than anything you will ever experience. It is beautiful, it’s romantic, it’s scary, and it’s honest.
"No lies.”
Pretty Little lies, starts with us meeting Olivia, a free-lance journalist who is ending her marriage after 4 years and we see all the pretty little lies that caused it to happen. She is literally married to the biggest Douche husband, yes he is a Douche and I hate him and believe me you will hate him!!
“Douche-baggery?”
“Yep. Douche-baggery. Own it. Use it. Love it”
How did Olivia end up with such an ass? Yeah I wanted to know too and well she was healing from a broken heart, a broken heart caused by Luke. Luke her first love, the first pretty little lie she had in her life. Luke is the man she ran from in Chicago. But 7 years later and one failed marriage Olivia is going back, back to her best friend Pyper, OMG STOP HERE BECAUSE I LOVE PYPER, like I was crying laughing over the things she puts Olivia up to. She is this ball of energy, that will do whatever it takes to bring her best friend back. She is the type of best friend every single book girlfriend needs in fact, I want a Pyper!! She is honest to a fault, fun, and so caring I wanted to hug her. She will not let Olivia lie to herself or to her. This bond they have is AMAZING and is so strong you can’t help but get attached to them.
“Uh-huh, sure. I’m on to you, Pyper Elizabeth Lexington.”
“Don’t try to get me or middle name me, Olivia Grace Brooks. I’m slave to fashion. I’m so sorry! It’s an addiction.”
So back to Luke, Oh Luke!! They were high school sweethearts, the high school sweethearts that made you jealous. A love that was so intense and so strong you really think nothing can break it. But something can break it, a pretty little lie. A little lie that kept them apart from each for 7 years but fate, fate is a bastard, a sneaky little bastard that has its own plans. And one awkward moment brings them back together. Luke, has been praying for this chance, praying for a do over and he has no plans of letting Olivia run ever again. Luke is everything that screams sexy, he is successful, determined, funny, and oh so patient. Seriously I am not lying this is the Ultimate Book Boyfriend, I swear it’s impossible to not love him. And let me just tell you this boy gives Olivia a speech that left me well…
“I’m speechless and his declaration leaves me breathless.”
“My stomach has so many butterflies right now. And is turning cartwheels. And my intestines are in my throat. I hate this feeling, it’s that I’m-going-to-throw-up-any-second feeling.”
Yeah I am ALL ABOUT LUKE!! Like I might be stalker level in love with this book boyfriend.
Olivia is beyond great character. I love her humor and her fashion advice, actually I think those might have been some of my favorite parts of this book. At one point I was laughing so hard I had to take a moment to control myself, TEARS RUNNING DOWN MY CHEEKS FUNNY!! Olivia, is brave, strong and I loved that she was open to love, she wasn’t jaded. I loved watching this new/old Olivia emerge and I loved watching her and Luke rediscovery each other and their relationship.
FASHION TIPS: “Wearing spandex is a privilege, not a right.” “People, the fanny pack went out of style way back in the 80s. I don’t care if it’s a Louis Vuitton; it’s still a fanny pack.” “Just say no to scrunchies!””Pea green is not a good color. On anyone. Ever.”
OH DEAR GOD then the end hit me and let’s just say what the hell, where the hell, OH MY SHE DID IT REALLY THE MOTHER OF CLIFFHANGERS THAT HAS MY MOUTH OPEN AND I AM SCREAMING…..
Excuse me for just a moment while I dance around with excitement for my friend Jennifer!! I am happy and proud of her for accomplishing a dream, and not only writing a book, but publishing it!
Pretty Little Lies is a great ADULT Summer read. This book has realism, heartbreak, swoon worthy chemistry, redemption, friendship, humor, love, and it's all about second chances. This is a book that has a little bit of everything. For the story's main character Olivia, it's a story about her second chance a love her ran away from 7 years prior to the story starting. That run away set in motion a train wreck of events, including an abusive marriage that thankfully has now ended in divorce and sent her back to her home town, and yes, into the arms of her first love. Before you sigh or roll your eyes, believe me, it's not as easy as I just made it sound.
Olivia is a smart, beautiful, intelligent girl whom I felt bad for, laughed with, and cheered on. Olivia's growth was evident through out the story. I loved the Jennifer didn't make a victim, but instead made Olivia this feisty character who was fed up with the lies, the cheating and the abuse and gets the heck out of dodge and away from Deacon, the sleezy ex-husband. Instead of making Olivia this "poor me" type of girl, she makes her this women I could relate to, even though I've not dwelt with the things Olivia has. Olivia picks up the pieces of her life and makes something of it, including confronting a past she ran from, something that has haunted her and her ex-Luke for seven years.
Before I talk about the tall, dark and sexy Luke, let's talk about the AWESOME best friend who's been there for Olivia through thick and thin, Pyper! Oh my goodness Pyper is that best friend you want in your life These's two know each other like the back of their own hands. The things these two do, say and the situations they find themselves in had me laughing out loud. There are some down right hysterical situations, and I loved that Pyper not only was there for her best friend, but she forced to get out of her slump and move on with life. Even though their speed dating situation didn't work out, it did land Olivia back into Luke's life.
Luke! Oh he is one hot love interest. I loved how Jennifer allowed me to get a glimpse into what Luke and Olivia had in high school, via Olivia's thinking about the things they did, what they went through, experienced, and that little white lie she over heard that sent her packing in the first place. Don't worry, we find out what was really said, why, and if Olivia had only stayed and confronted Luke about it, how things would have been so different for the two of them. BUT, instead we get a story that allows the two of them to pick up right where they left off. The things they've both done the past seven years have made them grow up, and have them both realizing they've both been wanting the same thing, each other.
Oh mama, is the chemistry between these two hot. These two of their fair share of sexy times, as well as humorous moments like when Olivia falls off the desk when a little something something was going down. Oh yes, these two are written in a very realistic way and I loved the realism in this story. Most importantly I loved that these two have been given a second chance at love. What Luke and Olivia have is one of those soul mate, true love type of loves. It made sense. It was right and I loved reading about their reconnecting.
I liked the way that Jennifer allowed me to get to know her characters, especially Olivia. Being in her early twenties, and a divorced women hurts, but it wasn't the end of the world for her, and I love she was able to find herself again. How she grew and changed and owned who she was. Each chapter has a fun fashion tip at the top, indicating what's to come in that chapter. It flowed perfectly with the book, since fashion is Olivia's line of work. There were a few times I felt the story dragged for me, but over all this was a story I seriously enjoyed. Holy crap, talk about a killer ending! Over all this is an adult read I'd recommend taking with you to the beach, the pool, the lake or wherever you're Summer reading takes you.
***ARC received in return for honest review*** "Fashion tip: Stilettos are great when paired with a great pair of jeans, a skirt, or a dress. Not only do they make your legs look longer and give your calves a great workout but they have the added bonus of coming in handy should you need to give a cheating husband a kick in the crotch!"
As soon as I read that opening sentence I knew I was going to like Pretty Little Lies and I wasn't wrong! I loved the fashion tips that began every chapter. They were sometimes funny, usually gave a hint as to what was to come in that chapter and ALWAYS practical. Just like Olivia, I could've kicked her cheating, slime-ball of an ex, Deacon, right in the crotch more than once!! Oh, I didn't like him and with good reason as you will find out (no spoilers).
Olivia decides enough is enough, she's taking her life back. She divorces her ex, heads home to her best friend and bumps, literally, into Luke, her first love and realises she still loves him. Luke is now a successful businessman and all kinds of hot!! Can Olivia resist him? Does she even want to? Hell, I wouldn't!
I loved Olivia's fiery best friend Pyper, who only has Olivia's best interests at heart even if Olivia thinks otherwise! She made me laugh out loud so many times especially when trying to get Olivia back onto the dating scene..setting up an on-line dating profile scene was really funny, as was the various "dates" Olivia went on - too many to pick a favourite. I want a best friend like her.
"Fashion tip: Wearing clothes in several sizes too small DOES NOT make you look thinner. It makes you look like a big zit straining to pop. Also, pea-green is not a good color. On anyone. Ever."
Pretty Little Lies made me laugh out loud, shout, cry and gasp in shock - all things I like in a good read. There was enough hotness to set my kindle on fire and start my pulse throbbing (amongst other things!) but not too much that I thought "not ANOTHER sex scene!". I did think towards the end of the book that the story was going to be rushed as there seemed to be loose ends to tie up but just when I thought that, BAAM!!!.....NO SPOILERS!!!!! (psst! I loved the ending)
A very worthy 4 stars for this well written debut novel, definitely 1-click buy this book.
I wait with baited breath for the next novel from the pen of this rising new author, Jennifer Miller.
In this debut novel from Jennifer Miller, we read about Olivia and her best friend, Pyper. Olivia, dreaming of a happily ever after with her highschool sweetheart, overhears something that changes her destiny. Moving forward, she runs away to the arms of the first boy that takes the pain away. A boy that is bad news all the way around. Just a few short years later, she finds herself divorced and moving back to her hometown to find herself again. Olivia brings Pyper along for the road to self-discovery. And what do you know...some old friends happen to pop up and make an appearance!
Pretty Little Lies is romantic comedy at its finest. Olivia and Pyper partake in some of the most hilarious antics related to online dating, fashion, and first date disasters. The dialogue is real, it's witty, and filled with strong emotion. As a fashion writer and blogger, Olivia gives the reader a "Fashion Tip" at the start of each chapter. The tips range from the very helpful (check all angles), to the hilarious (no fanny packs)! Olivia's attention to detail really reflects who she is as she rebuilds her life back home.
Pretty Little Lies is sexy, with a hot man included! The romance is beautiful, the emotion is strong. And, as a divorced woman, I can totally relate to that feeling of "finding yourself" again. Jennifer Miller nailed it!
If you want romance, fashion, sexiness, and comedy, Pretty Little Lies has it all! And trust me when I say you will fall in love with Luke and his dimple :)
I’m not sure where to begin. There were so many parts of this debut novel that I LOVED. Pyper is an amazing friend and the dialogue between them is hilarious, especially when they’re together at social functions. And there were many moments of…Oh my God! That did not just happened! Olivia is an amazing character. I enjoyed seeing her develop and grow throughout the story—finding herself, and finally believing in herself. I can’t say enough about how amazing Luke was…protector, romantic, and simply swoon-worthy. He’s so determined to win her back and the things that he does was SO sweet, you can’t help fall in love with him. One of my favorite lines from Luke: I’ve never forgotten you, Olivia. Never. I can’t let you go again. Don’t ask me to.”
Each chapter had a fashion tip. OMG! I LOVED THEM!!! Pretty Little Lies was well written, the story flowed well, and the characters were not only amazing, but believable too. With lots of humor, romance, heartbreak, forgiveness, friendship, passion, struggles, and self-discovery, this novel had it all. As I wondered if there would be a sequel toward the end, I found out….YES!!! And Wow! What an ending. Oh…did I mention how much I laughed out loud, felt my heart tug in good and painful way. Pretty Little Lies is a beautiful love story about second chances…there is no little lies about that!!!
This novel had me from the minute I started reading. It pulls you in an emotional roller coaster and I cannot help but feel a disturbing hate towards Deacon. I feel completely and utterly connected to Olivia and damn it if I am not there for every bump in her life. I am devastated by the betrayal she feels but overall, I am invested in seeing her happiness. When she has to jump and take a chance on finding new love, I am there holding her hand the whole way. Overall, this book simply makes you feel. What an amazing feeling to understand the characters so thoroughly.
The friendship and loyalty she has with Pyper makes me utterly happy and gleeful at their reunion and overall there is a moment that she is listening to a song, Philip Phillips Home that actually makes me tear because of a deep connection I have with the song. This book touched me so profoundly lastly because of Luke. Lord, Luke… he is utterly an amazing character and real. I feel like I can actually believe he exists… yes I wish! I would claim him yesterday. We are destined damn it!
Now with every story there is a little bad, but seriously the only thing bad about the story is that it ended as a cliffhanger of the most epic proportion!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves an epic love story…. FIVE DAMN STARS!!
WHAT?!?!?!! That was the end, no that freaking sucks! Curse you cliffhanger!!!! On another note I loved it, so freaking good. OMG I loved Luke, very sweet & sexy ;) *swoon* So glad Olivia finally got her crap together. In the beginning she ticked me off, she could have been with Luke the whole time, but I guess that made for an interesting reunion. Now I want the next book, ahh!
I had some pretty awesome GIFS for this review that didn't want to co-operate with my post on Goodreads, so do check it out on our blog.
Forewarning - This review may contain spoilers. Don't kill me, I tried my best not to reveal too much. However you should read on my friends, read on.
Olivia Brooks and Luke Easton were 'that' high school couple. You know, the 'it' couple of their school, the ones that were madly-in-love and made you wish you had the same thing. The ones that you looked at, and all you could feel was insane jealousy that they had found their other half, the ying to their yang, the dot to their i and the love to their heart (I know, I know, I am way too corny :P) . They were truly the lucky ones that found their love young. But that's the thing, they found their love young, which made a certain someone doubt their love and their future.
Now what could happen to turn such a perfect romance into mush? Well it just so happens that one day, Olivia hears overhears something that she shouldn't of, this thing is the 'pretty little lie' of the novel, which causes her to question her entire relationship with Luke and their entire future. They were supposed to go off to college together and build a future together, you know the whole 2.5 kids and a picket fence kind of thing. But what she overhears makes her run. She packs up, fleds town, transfers college and makes her family and best friend promise never to tell Luke where she left to. She ups and leaves Luke without saying a word to him.
Now this made me angry because if they had that kind of love, you would think she would want an explanation for what she overheard. But I understand why she left, I mean if you overhear something you shouldn't have heard that totally crushed you. I guess you wouldn't want to know why because the reason may hurt you even more. So I guess in a way, I understand why. Still she left THE LOVE OF HER LIFE! Anyway, moving on Olivia starts over in Boston. Where she throws herself into a sub-par love with a blue eyed, blonde called Deacon.
Fast forward a few years and their married. All is perfect on the outside but inside they have their problems, Olivia turns into a recluse of herself and ignore all the tiny problems in their relationship. Thank god that another something something happens which see's Olivia kick asshole-Deacon to the curb. KAPOW. BAM. SEEYA BUDDY.
Leaving Deacon, Olivia heads back home to Chicago, Illinois. The home she never came back to in the past seven years that she had been away. Olivia moves back home to move in with her crazy, red headed, eccentric, best friend Pyper, and from here is where the fun truly begins. Pyper and Olivia have been best friends since they were little, their conversations are so funny. Take this line for example, where Pyper pushes Olivia to get back out there in the dating pool:
"Think about it, how else are you - I mean we - going to meet a man? We don't attend church often, and I'm not sure I'd want to go to church to pick up a guy anyway. Something tells me God wouldn't look too favourably'. (Pyper)
"I think you are right about that, plus that would be weird. Hi, so my name is Olivia and I saw you praying over there and thought I could be the answer to some of your requests, so maybe you'd like to go out and we could uh, worship, together?"
Ok moving on from the best-friendmenship. I'm going to talk about Luke. At first, hearing how much pain Olivia had felt because of Luke mad me really dislike Luke from the very beginning. However, once she returned to town and the two met once again, I swear to you I fell in love with Luke. He is completely swoon worthy and I loved his character more than I loved Olivia (I'm sorry Jennifer, how could I not? Luke is a total hunk!).
Now cue the angels, bells and hallelujah's because Luke and Olivia meet again *HALLELUJAH*DING DING DING*. Cause after all this time their chemistry is still off the charts like wam-bam-thank-you-mam and I was like oh-my-heart. I mean after all this time had passed between them, they both still felt the same way about each other. It's hard to find a love that rare, which definitely demonstrates the one true love theory, where once you find 'the one' there really is nothing or no-one who can ever compare.
Luke is a tall, well built, dark haired, beautiful blue eyed god. Yes, a GOD I tell you. He is witty, sarcastic, funny and best of all he is a romantic.... ahhh a man after my own heart ;) Luke is a complete but cocky gentleman and I just really really liked his character. I mean He remembers the littlest details about Olivia and you gotta hand it to him, I mean the man hasn't seen her in seven years.
Pyper, is such a fun and vibrant character. She really is the biggest 'Olivia and Luke' cheerleader and I loved that although Olivia didn't want anything to do with Luke, Pyper subtly pushed Luke into Olivia's direction. The whole best friends knows you best thing is so true and this book is a testament to that statement. Here's a few lines where Olivia and Luke talk about Pyper:
"Damn, that red headed bitch. She's in so much trouble! Why would she do this?" (Olivia)
"Oh don't be too mad at at Pyper. I can be pretty persuasive when I want something, and make no mistake. I want something" (Luke)
"What did you do? Bribe her with chocolate?" (Olivia)
"Close, next big thing." (Luke)
"Shoes? You bought her shoes?!... Does she have no shame?" (Olivia)
"I didn't buy her shoes, just waved a gift card around in front of her face. She's easy to bribe" (Luke)
Something unique about the book that I haven't seen before are these fashion tips that appear in the beginning of each chapter. I didn't mention this before but Olivia fashion blogger, so each tip is a straight forwarded guide on what not to wear as well as things that work well together. These tips are written in a light and humorous tone.
Pretty Little Lies is Jennifer's debut novel and I think the story line was quite interesting. The beginning was quite slow as the scene and background needed to be set and then from there on, the characters move at a normal pace. There are some major issues dealt with throughout the novel that may pull at your heart strings, but it didn't pull too much on mine. It was a light and enjoyable read, filled with a lot of funny scenes and dialogue. At times I felt like the book was overwritten as I felt some actions really didn't need to be written, or some internal dialogue didn't need to be described, however, I think Jennifer's writing can only go up from here.
Finally, I will warn you now, this book ends in a cliffhanger! So do not say I didn't tell you so!

Pretty Little Lies- Jennifer Miller Okay, Let me start by saying, It takes a lot for me to genuinely laugh out loud at a book. Like, not giggle and say “oh well that was cute” or say “awww” but literally laugh out loud so hard I had tears in my eyes because parts of this book were so amazingly funny that I couldn’t help myself. Lets Refresh: Olivia is a girl who was completely in love with her high school sweetheart, when she overheard a conversation between him and his mother, she ran. She ran from her heartbreak to Boston to start over. She went to school, became a journalist, got married in Vegas on spring break, waited a few years, got cheated on, and got divorced. That is the beginning of this book in just a nutshell. She is a bright girl who works on a fashion blog and writes for different magazines. She seems to have it all to the outside world. Until she came home early one day and found her husband in the sack with a bimbo. She knocks the bimbo in the teeth and kicks husband in a place where the sun doesn’t shine and leaves. 6 months later, she is divorced. However, her husband Deacon doesn’t want the divorce. He has been and continues to be mean to her, treats her badly, grabs her, leaves bruises and she finally just had enough and leaves. Back to Chicago she goes, to start over. Again. When she returns to Chicago she goes through some emotional turmoil. Her best friend Pyper (who is ass-tastic by the way) is there to pick up all of her pieces, put her back together and get her out into the world again. Pyper has so much spunk that she gets Olivia join a dating site to try to “get her back out there”.... (Pyper has so much spunk that I wanted to join a dating site after reading about it. HAHA.) Olivia seems to be doing okay and then BAM she runs into the boy. The boy, that broke her heart. Enter: Luke. Luke just wants a chance to tell her how much he loves her and he never stopped and that what she overheard was not meant the way it came out and truthfully, Luke, does a great job. He gets her to open up and he gets her to look passed all the drama that has been caused and created by running. He gets her to realize what she has been running from is exactly what she really needs, until....... dun dun dun, Enter: Deacon, and then, CH! I LOVED this book. I loved the spunk of Pyper, I loved the heart of Luke, I loved the Characters that Jennifer made around the Star of the book. I loved the quirks that the dating site dates had, I ADORED the Fashion tips at the beginning of each of the chapters and I absolutely loved loved loved the Pea Green Beanie Babies. I would read it again, and I more than likely will. She did an amazing job writing each of these characters and each of their personalities fit them perfectly. I cannot wait for Book 2. Jennifer Miller is now on my “Authors to look for” list. She is amazing and her writing talent goes above and beyond in Pretty Little Lies. This chick gives it 5 outta 5 stars! ~~~~~ Manda; 2chicksandablog
How many of us have heard something that we shouldn't have heard? I know I have. Well that's what happened with Olivia. But unlike me, she really let this become the reason behind all her sudden decisions. Instead of staying and confronting the person that hurt her, she runs. And that's where her life changes.
I really enjoyed this story. There are several things that made me this book more enjoyable than most. In every chapter in this book, you get very impressive fashion tips. I wish I would have highlighted my favorite to share some with you. But they're all very useful tips. Look out for them.
Another thing I liked about this novel is how well Olivia handled her divorce. In a bunch of books I have read, the author would make the woman a blubbering mess. Like divorce is the absolute worst thing in the world and their life is over. Maybe I'm being insensitive But I don't like weak protagonist and granted I have never experienced a divorce. But I sure hope if I ever did, I'd stay a strong woman, like Olivia did. I was happy to see she was strong and was able to move forward.
Now, it does help that Olivia has Pyper. Pyper is the kind of friend everyone needs. Someone who would not let you sit on your butt and wallow in self pity. She's a get off your butt and let's pamper ourselves kind of gal. She definitely helped Olivia when she needed it the most. I really hope I get a chance to read more about Pyper. Maybe a sequel about her is in the future for Ms. Miller.
And lastly when it came time to it, Ms. Miller didn't play the back and forth game with Olivia and Luke. The whole, I love him but I hate him game is overrated. He hurt me so I'm running away. Olivia showed growth from the young girl she was, who first ran away from a horrible situation, to the woman that stood and confronted the situation. I really enjoyed the chemistry between Luke and Olivia and enjoyed that fact that she let them continue where they left off.
So if you haven't gotten by now how much I enjoyed "Pretty Little Lies", I did. I really enjoyed the writing style in this book. However as much as I enjoyed the story there was something that really bothered me. There were parts in the story where Olivia and Luke spend time together and they talked about this past. I think because I have been blogging so long, I can see the difference in those scenes. She did a lot of telling vs showing. I would have rather they reminisced and go back to that time then telling me about it. That was it. Overall, this book was really book. I give it 4 stars and a definite Good Choice for Reading.
Olivia is having a really bad day, not only does she catch her husband of 4 years cheating on her, but it is with a woman with horrible fashion sense (light yellow shirt with an orange bra). She does the smart thing and gets rid of his cheating self and decides to move back home and live with her best friend.
Olivia left Chicago seven years ago because of a broken heart, but coming home and living with her best friend, Pyper, is just what she needs to get passed her nasty divorce (and nasty marriage in my opinion). Pyper is the type of friend everyone wants/hopes to have. She is there for her when she cries, she knows when Olivia is lying to herself and knows Olivia better than she knows herself. Olivia realizes that after leaving Chicago she lost herself and she wants to be herself again, not the shell of a person she has become because of her husband.
To do this she decides that she needs to get back out in the dating world. After a few terrible/funny dates she see him again , the guy who broke her heart. Turns out that what happened with Luke wasn't as it seemed and that her life since then has just been her running away from her heartache. Luke is determined to have her back in his life.
"Olivia, I'm not going to let you run and hide from me. I had a great time with you today, and I know you had a good time too. I finally found you again, and I'm not about to let you go."
Will Olivia learn to trust Luke again and more importantly herself?
I really enjoyed this book. I had a hard time putting it down, it was one of those books that you keep saying just one more chapter and then you realize it is 2:00 AM. Ms Jennifer's writing is impressive, she is funny at the right times, moving at others, and she added just the right amount of sexy and sass that the book needed. Very impressive work from a new author. I look forward to reading more of her work and I really don't think I can wait for next book to come out.
At first I felt that the title of the book was misleading - "Pretty Little Lies" - after all, it is one lie that caused the whole chain of events to unfold. Then I realised that it was the lies that Olivia told herself to make herself happy. I really enjoyed watching her grow and change throughout the book - but it wasn't any rushed change, or massive change. Just subtle little things that came about as she experienced new things and got to know herself a little better.
I was a little worried that it was going to be a story where one half of the couple had never moved on and never been with someone else while they searched for their first love again, but was very glad that wasn't the case. Both Luke and Olivia have been with other people in serious relationships and I think that was what helped them reconnect so well - they had that history as well as experience with others to know how good they do have it with each other. I don't think the situation with Rebecca is yet resolved for Luke, as the Deacon situation is yet to be resolved for Olivia. There is really only one main supporting character in the book in the form of Pyper, Olivia's best friend and housemate. Pyper is a great best friend and I really liked her character. She was honest with Olivia and didn't let her wallow in self pity, but was supporting when she needed to be. We all need a Pyper in our lives! I would love to see an off-shoot book that delves further into how she has coped since Olivia moved away, how she has built up to where she is now and hopefully to where she finds Mr Right.
Overall a great read. Some of the paragraphs are a little long winded which did detract from the flow a bit, but still worth 4 stars. Loved the fashion tips at the start of each chapter - if there isn't a blog out there like the one Olivia runs, there should be - and everyone should be made to read it! Couldn't believe the cliffhanger ending, but I'm so glad that it wasn't a rushed wrap up which was where I thought it was going. As others have written, I loved the ending and can't wait for the next book.
review coming soon, get this book guys, its perfect for the summer!
Updated: (4.5 star review) Pretty Little Lies is one you can add to your TBR pile this summer. It's has all the right ingredients for a perfect beach read such as super sweet love story, great fashion tips, characters that will capture your interest and just enough drama to balance the story out plus having you laughing out loud.
Cover: The cover is very sweet to look at. Its shows that even though on the outside everything looks sweet the inside can be deceiving.
Romance: Let me tell you how awesome the romance was in Pretty Little Lies, it showed the pretty and uglier side of love. But once the pretty side make its encore, it was full of intense passion and a swoon worth man you couldn't get enough off. Olivia got burned when younger and ends up making a real bad life choice because of that and pays for it well, but luck or fate will guide her back and truths or lies will be uncovered. Luke will stop at nothing to make sure that happens.
Humor: Speeding Dating - It will leave you in stitches. Its one of many situations that Pyper, Olivia's best friend convinces them to try out.
Something I loved: Every chapter starts off with the cutest and funniest fashion tips. That was an extra detail that really captured my attention.
Would I recommend it: 100% yes. If you are of age to read something a little more mature than YA and can understand passion, then you will gobble this book up quickly.
Favorite Character: Luke hands down, he is just so determine to win Olivia back that you just can't help but fall for him and hard. If only guys like him really did exist in this world, lol.
Saucy Parts: Ha! If you have read what I have said so far, then you know there is some sizzling saucy parts in these pages. It will have your grandmother blushing. Luke and Olivia will heat it up and then some.
When I first got Pretty Little Lies from Jennifer Miller, I instantly fell in love with the cover. It’s absolutely gorgeous. This is my first book from Jennifer and if they are as good as Pretty Little Lies, then I need to go Amazon shopping ASAP!
Olivia just recently got a divorce from her over powering and controlling husband, Deacon. In order to start a new life, her best friend since high school, Pyper, has her come back home to Chicago and move in with her. Pyper is an amazing character, I just adored her. She is hilarious, spunky, and the best friend any one could have. Olivia is very lucky to have someone like her by her side. So once she gets settled in, Pyper and Olivia decide to join an online dating site, well, Pyper makes Olivia sign up. LOL. I will tell you, it’s been a while since I have laughed out loud so much in a book. This poor girl (Olivia), goes out on these bind dates from hell. LOL. I was cracking up the whole time! Then, Olivia runs into her high school sweetheart, Luke and all these feelings come back to her. Is Olivia ready to go back and relive all those high school memories of her and Luke? Can she forgive him for breaking her heart all those years ago?
Pretty Little Lies was a hilarious, heart-warming, romantic read. Jennifer really bought back some of my own memories when they were talking about first loves and high school sweethearts. There is nothing better than reading a story that takes you back to a special time in your life and that’s exactly what Jennifer did for me, butterflies and all. Oh, and I can’t forget about all the great “fashion tips” before every chapter! Believe me, those will have you cracking up too! LOL Pretty Little Lies definitely has Owl Always Be Reading’s seal of approval, now go buy it!!
I am so excited for and proud of my friend Jennifer Miller!!!
Pretty Little Lies by debut author Jennifer Miller is a second chance comedy romance that had me laughing out loud more than once. Seven years ago Olivia overheard something she wasn't supposed to and because of it everything she had planned for was drastically changed. Instead of ending up with her then boyfriend Luke, she marries Deacon who turns out to be more of a toad than a prince. A very amorous, cheaty, and borderline abusive toad. But Olivia gets smart and divorces him, then moves home to Chicago to live with her best friend Pyper.
Ahhh Pyper. The best friend who knows Olivia better than anyone, and gets her to agree to crazy things. Like online and speed dating. The situations those two end up in had me cracking up. Pyper wants to get Olivia back out there, so she drags Olivia out a few times and eventually one thing leads to another and Olivia ends up bumping into her long lost first love Luke. Cue romance and hilarity. Did I mention how much I laughed during this book?
Olivia is a fashion journalist, and author Jennifer Miller has found a fun and unique way to tie Olivia's personality into each Chapter heading by having one of Olivia's fashion tips at the beginning of each chapter. The tips often give you little hints and tie in with what happens in those chapters. They were genius. I enjoyed each one and looked forward to them.
If you are looking for a fun summer read to take with you to the pool or beach, or maybe a new book boyfriend (Oh Luke you sexy devil!) give Pretty Little Lies a try!
