The series starts off funny... but actually ends up ultimately being a very clever take on the harem genre (more below), and has a lot to say about what it means to be human and to be flawed. It goes in a lot of very strange ways, and not every chapter of the series is 5-star satisfying... but the ending to the series is by far the best I've seen for a long running manga.
I think it's important to mention that the harem manga/anime genre is pretty terrible... it's normally just fully indulgent and serves no purpose than to let the reader place themselves in the protagonist's shoes and imagine being fawned over. This series is not indulgent (well... it's still a Japanese manga... so let's round it to 90% not indulgent). The supporting characters are given a lot of time to develop and grow, and take on real complexity (in a lot of ways, much more so than the main character), and that's what really makes this series interesting to read.
Kakak 'Dewa' memang keren, tapi Elsea lucu~ (^,,^) __________
Edited 17 Aug 2016 : Sampai volume 19 (^ ^)
Rada "sesat" sih~ tapi si Keima justru lebih tertarik sama cewek 2D ketimbang cewek 3D ∑d(゚∀゚d)
*tapitetepsenangsih* \(^ヮ^)/
(I want to disclose that I read the fan translated English version of this via MangaFox.)
This really is a cute series, but I have to say that it's a little too "monster of the day" so far. I love the premise of a dating sim otaku having to win the heart of girls, but this if you're looking for something that will be quickly wrapped up and not be 100+ chapters, this isn't that type of manga.
It does have a better premise than most as far as "umpteen chapters for eternity" mangas tend to go, so I'm going to go ahead and give the other volumes of this series a try. It's pretty cute so far, although I will say that when this gets picked up here in the USA I'll probably decline purchasing these. (Not if, but when since this is a decently written series with a HUGE fanbase both here and in Japan.)
Probably the best "harem" manga I've read to date. The World God Only Knows (or TWGOK, as the fan base shortens) is wonderfully written, drawn, and paced. The narratives holds a surprisingly healthy balance of satire and mysticism, Wakaki taking playful jabs at tired, old, and somewhat misogynistic "dating sim" genre, all while telling a compelling fantasy story. Because of his careful characterization, embeds a healthy realism to each man, girl, and demon in the story so that everyone is hopelessly flawed but wonderfully honest in their journey.
The manga was fun in the beginning with the unique protagonist. His way of analyzing love and comparing it to a game gave us a lot of laugh. The coming of age element and all the different challenges/conquest made it a great read But ones the time traveling arc started things became too confusing and it went downhill. For the first 200 odd chapters it's 5/5 the last 70 odd chapters is 1/5
Very entertaining. Usually there is some great romantic drama in harem manga, but this one actually brings an analytical approach to things. So as a guide for getting a girlfriend. Bleh. For a laugh out loud comedy. Oh yes.
A good light hearted manga. Well mostly light hearted anyways. Good concept and story line. Characters are well expressed and interesting. Main protagonist is likeable. Also funny and romantic in a different way.
I read this when I was in middle school and honestly... I think I read it just to read something. It's definitely too dragging and repetitive, I have no idea how I watched the anime and read some volumes of the manga.
This manga is fun, and I really enjoy the way Keima uses his game theories on the real world. The first volume had my favourite girls from the anime so I was happy to revisit their stories again. This is a clever take on the harem genre, so I might pick up some of the other volumes as well.
I was really looking forward to enjoying The World Only God Knows. I did not. Don't take me wrong, the plot is original but it just gets so overused during the first volumes that I just got bored. Yes, each girls was different, but to me, they were cliché girls. And Keima even though interesting bored me at some points with his view of the perfect girl and that it was easier to date an game avatar or how he perceived certain situations reality vs game (ex: the popstar evolution in game vs reality... ). I wish I could have enjoyed more towards the end as many people have but I disconnected from the story and was just glad to finish it.
I would recommend it to many people but to me, it was a long26 volumes.
