Karyn Calabrese is Chicago's premier vegan and raw restauranteur and champion for holistic living. Her timeless beauty, youthful physique, and boundless energy are testaments to the lifestyle habits she advocates. Her latest cookbook is divided into two sections: one features popular cooked recipes from her restaurants Karyn's Cooked and Karyn's on Green, and the other focuses on her favorite raw recipes from Karyn's Fresh Corner.
If you're looking for a cookbook with great photos of what your food's supposed to look like, keep looking. This book is sparse on the pictures, and most of them are of the author, not the food. The instructions seem rather spare, if you're new to the kitchen, you'll probably be confused by the process. It's also one of those 2 in 1 books, halfway through the book, you flip it over to read the other one. In other words, half the book is printed upside down. All in all, I was disappointed, the recipes sound really delicious, but the directions were too sparse to make me feel confident in my ability to prepare them. Fortunately, I live in Chicago, so I can go over to her restaurant and try the real deal!
A double-sided book where one side focuses on raw meals, while the other side focuses on vegan meals (though many are both raw and vegan regardless of which section you're reading from). This was my main book when hosting a raw-vegan Thanksgiving meal. Because this is not my main way of eating, I had to stock up on a few new ingredients such as Bragg Liquid Aminos (fortunately found at my local Whole Foods). I especially enjoyed the almond pâté.
On my list of things to make: Papaya-Avocado Salad, Apple Pie, No-Bake Coconut Snowballs.
Edit: the Sesame-Lime Hummus is delicious, if a bit thin. Perhaps cut the water in half?
Helpful book to help former meat eaters transition to veganism and even raw veganism. Looking at the author, who is in her sixties, is evidence enough that its a health sustaining lifestyle choice.
