Summary: "Coral The Reef Fairy”, one entry in the Rainbow Magic series, tells the story of Kirsty and Rachel as they help Coral protect the reef against the three goblins that have stolen her magic wand. As they search for the goblins, they learn about how climate change is affecting the oceans which in turn destroys the reefs, as well as how careless boaters and swimmers can harm the reef by not being careful. When they find the goblins, they are also being careless, accidentally kicking the reef as they swim and play. Before the girls can get the wand back, the goblins escape. Later the girls find them again, and this time trick them into thinking they are going to be harmed by magic jellyfish in order to make them drop the wand. Once Coral get her wand back, she is able to protect the reef once again. Kirsty and Rachel return to the beach and resolve to spread the word about saving the oceans.

Mentor Writing Traits: (1) Idea – The environmental topics reflected in this book, such as climate change and habitat destruction, are important for children to understand. (2) Conventions – The text reflects proper writing conventions and grammar for students to observe.
Classroom Integration: This would be a wonderful, lighthearted book to begin to delve into environmental topics with younger students, in order to have them write about ways to help the environment. Similarly, this book could be used to spark grand conversations about what the students like about nature and what they might do to protect it.
Other Suggestions: I would suggest this book as being appropriate for readers in approximately fourth grade. As an additional idea for integration in the classroom, this book could be used as a mentor text for proper writing conventions, especially related to appropriately written dialogue.
