"When disaster strikes, the only thing you can count on is yourself!"
I have always been interested in books like this. Books about natural disasters, either fiction or non-fiction. So I was eager to read it when I spotted it at the Boekenfestijn.
Sadly, the book first starts off very slow. I was annoyed with Dylan (what a terrible character, even after things I still didn't quite like him), I didn't quite like the mom, it seemed a bit boring. But then things got shaken up and my interest jumped back. Everything suddenly turned for the worst, and there was a lot of excitement and scary moment. Though I was a bit worried that they wouldn't leave the overpass (I get why they were there, and that they don't want to move from it, but I just wanted to see more of the city and know if their families were all right), but eventually they did, making the book even more haunting as we could see the destruction throughout the city.
And what a destruction. Houses broken down, houses missing pieces, trees uprooted, gas leaks, fires, and more. I was hoping the kids would reach their homes safely, given all the aftershocks they went through.
I also did like that one of them filmed most of the earthquake and the trip home.
The ending was really nice, and I had to blink away a few tears when reunions happened.
I am not too sure how I feel about the mom. I get her point, he may be too young, but if you need to go home to change your other kid's diaper... maybe just don't shout that out loud? Maybe just ask your kid to come to you so you can tell him quietly. She didn't even seem to care that he was the laughingstock after what she said. :| Also please moms, don't shout cutesy names to your kids. It is embarrassing.
All in all, I would recommend this book. And I will also see if I can find the Tornado books as I want that one as well.

Grades 2-5. Great choice for reluctant low/high kids. Exciting topics for each book in the series. Good for boys and girls.

Round up to 4.5 stars. Fun and quick story for kids, with some facts about earthquakes afterward. I have three more of these to read. Fun! I need books like these now and then.

"SPOILER ALERT"
If you like action and being scared if someones going to die or get hurt, then you will be guaranteed to love this book.
Lets talk about the setting, takes place at a skatepark,and at the basketball courtyard.The Major characters are Joey, Dylan, Fiona,K Kevin.The plot is when the characters go to the skatepark and skate but suddenly a Earthquake shows up out of know where and destroys the overpass from the highway.Also, the Earthquake destroys the houses.
I like the way the Author writes quotes for the reader to be more details in a way. I was moved in a way, When he says the BOOM,and the Earthquake shake. Instead of saying the normal words like the world shakes and stuff like that.Also,when its like wow what was that.
I was surprised when joey caught a little girl separated from her mother. And when the little girl name Emmy ran to her mom but there was a power line on the between them. So Emmy kept on running to her mom when out of know where joey comes and catches her with all his speed.
I gave the book 3 stars because it was good but it should use more details. If you like action and sadness if someones going to hurt i recommend this book to you.

Joey and his friends are heading home from the skate park when an earthquake hits, separating them. Can they find each other and get home? What will they encounter along the way? Is their home still standing?
This is a good early chapter book. As such, I read through it quickly, although it will take the early elementary school target audience a little longer to get through. The characters were real and showed some growth, and the plot had a couple of scenes that made me turn pages quickly.

Ten year old Joey and his friend Fiona have just left the skateboard park with Kevin and Dylan when the unthinkable happens! The earth begins to shake and before they know it, Joey and Fiona are running for their lives! When it is all over, they face the unimaginable realization that their friends, Kevin and Dylan are not with them. Where are Kevin and Dylan and are they OK? Have their families survived? This book is an exciting realistic story of the devastation experienced by four friends after an earthquake. It is a great read for elementary students in third grade and up and it is appropriately challenging for readers at a third grade level. Themes such as appreciating friends and family and coming together during a crisis are just two of many that can be taught using this text.

I picked up a set of this book after reading Blizzard Night with a group of second grade boys. We all enjoyed the book and I was hoping for another book to add to my reading group selection. The target range on back says 2nd-3rd graders with a 4th grade reading level. I would agree with the reading level (great vocabulary), but would grade up for the target audience. The story was drama-infused with a lot of tough situations the kids go through. I would recommend third-fifth grades rather than second.

Short, sweet and to the point. Kids coming home from the skate park get caught in a California Earthquake. Can they put aside their differences for the sake of survival?
Fast-paced, full of action and adventure, this isn't a bad little book. For skater kids who want to read something with a little excitement, this is it. The story might have glossed over a lot of what an earthquake of this magnitude would be like, but it gives a taste of what it's like. To the typical kids reading this book it's just enough to be thrilling. :)

Otra estupenda aventura de Disaster Strikes. Joey y sus compañeros son sorprendidos por un monstruoso terremoto en los Ángeles y deberán apoyarse unos con otros si quieren llegar vivos a sus casas... eso si es que aún tienen casa y familia. Me gustó esta serie porque en primera, no se anda por las ramas y segunda, porque la sensación de peligro que tienen que vivir los chicos no se encuentra descafeinada por el hecho de ser niños. Muy buena

A very simple book for elementary school students. It talks about what happens in the event of an earthquake. Several kids are in the middle of skateboarding and an earthquake occurs. The friends get together and help each other to survive and deal with the aftermath of the earthquake. There isn't a tremendous amount of content ergo the low rating.

The moral was a bit in-yo-face, and basically no one got hurt, but I guess Dylan couldn’t really be impaled on that rod when this is aimed at 3rd graders lol.

One of the things that has always drawn me to books for younger readers is the opportunity (or challenge) to teach, or share information, in an entertaining and exciting story. This new Disaster Strikes series is a little more overt in its educational aspect (emergency preparedness), but it is still a fiction story at its heart, with a disaster as the springboard for the story's action.
In Disaster Strikes #1: Earthquake Shock, author Marlane Kennedy sets her story in Los Angeles where Joey Flores is skate-boarding with his peers Fiona, Kevin, and Dillon. Joey and Dillon are not the best of friends, and when Joey's mother appears to drive Joey home, Dillon teases Joey. However, with Dillon's help, Joey manages to convince his mother that they will all be leaving the skate park soon and that he'll be safe walking home.
As the four friends start home, a major earthquake rumbles, dramatically moving the land where they are and crumbling an overpass that they are passing beneath. They get separated by the fallen concrete. Joey and Fiona are concerned that Kevin and Dillon may have been crushed. It isn't safe for them to walk over the concrete as it may shift in an aftershock, so they hurry around the overpass. They find Dillon, alive, but trapped beneath some concrete. Rescuing Dillon, and finding Kevin, they continue on, wondering if they will even have homes to return to. They find a little girl, wandering lost. When they find the girl's mother, the girl nearly runs from their arms and across a live, downed power wire, until Joey saves her. They make it to their homes, but due to concerns about ruptured gas lines, they spend a night in a nearby shelter.
A lot clearly happens in the brief eleven chapters of this early-reader book. But that's okay. The story moves along quickly and packs in quite a bit. However, because of this, the troubled relationship between Joey and Dillon didn't play out very well and was mostly unnecessary.
Because of the didactic nature of the book, I have concerns over one issue. When Joey and Fiona find Dillon with his leg trapped under some rubble, Joey climbs in, head first, under the rubble to see how Dillon is trapped. He squirms around, uses a knife to cut Dillon's pant leg to free him. If Fiona and Dillon hadn't then both pulled one of Joey's legs, he would have then been crushed as the rubble shifted. But just moments earlier, Joey himself notes that the rubble could shift and they should stay clear of it. Yet he only pauses briefly to weigh the concerns of climbing completely under. The narrator notes: "But that was a risk Joey had to take." Really? I don't think so. I think I would have to have some serious conversations with my children about this. Risking one's life for someone else's legs doesn't seem a fair trade-off. Dillon's legs may have been crushed if the rubble shifted, but he wouldn't have been killed. I think it would have served everyone much better to seek an adult's help, but to stay with Dillon in the process.
Otherwise, the dangers to be on the look-out for are well described both in the fiction portion of the book, as well as in a few pages of earthquake facts. Those who don't live in earthquake areas are sure to learn something about earthquakes and their dangers, and those who do live in high-earthquake areas will likely be reminded of a few things.
But don't go crawling under concrete rubble!

This is a story about the fortitude a 10 year old boy shows in the face of adversity and how he comes to appreciate his family and friends more through it all. It should be a quick and exciting read for younger kids.

One day, Joey and Fiona are at the skate rink when Joey's mom says something that embarrasses him in front of other kids. She wants him to come home immediately because she has run out of diapers for his little sister. Dylan, a kid who lives next to Joey and teases him all the time, tells Joey's mother that he'll walk Joey home in a short while.
Joey knows that something is up but he's just happy that he gets to skate a while longer. The four of them head home a short while later and are up to their usual antics. They are performing and recording skateboarding tricks under an overpass, when a massive earthquake hits. Roads collapse, the overpass crumbles, cars are a jumbled mess and people start panicking.
Joey and Fiona escape from underneath the overpass but they cant find Kevin and Dylan. They look everywhere but then realize that the Kevin and Dylan could be under the rubble.

January 31, 2015Have you ever been in a earthquake crying "right i don't think so". I was confused why Joey Flores didn't listen to his mom but you "kids like to do their own thing". It was a sunny day outside and Joey was at a local skate park with friends and his mom was sitting on the grass and Joey was so embarrassed that his mom and little sister was there watching.
As the time was approaching five o clock his mom was ready to go but Joey wanted to stay a extra thirty minutes, but Joey's mom said you are to young to walk home alone. Dylan the camera boy was was two years older than Joey so he i will walk him home, because they lived in the same apartment complex. As soon it was five thirty Joey was ready to go home.
As Joey and Dylan was walking they felt the ground shake! The ground was shaking so violent throwing them around like a rag doll.
Dylan got trapped under an bridge bolder and the metal from the bolder was saving Dylan life. "But" the bolder collapsed Joey started to so uncontrollable but Joey heard Dylan voice. There was an opening were the metal was. Joey had enough space to slide under the bolder to unhook Dylan jeans from the metal.

I believe that at this age the students would be able to better handle the situation of disasters and what they should do if one were to occur. I also think this would work with intermediate grades because it goes into the concept of having a deeper appreciation for people once you realize they could be taken away.
The plot of this book was that when something bad occurs, you learn to appreciate what you have so much more than you used to. Within my classroom I would use this to have the students to practice determining what the main idea of the book is.
This is one of my favorite books because it deals with real life disasters and talks about the emotions you go through as you work through the disaster, this book also relates to children wanting independence and becoming embarrassed when their parents are around just like any child goes through.

The first book in the Disaster Strikes series, Earthquake Shock, was a fat, easy read. Joey and his friends are caught in a California earthquake after having been at the skate park. When the group gets separated by a collapsed overpass they must figure out how to help each other when one boy (the one that always gives Joey a hard time) gets trapped under rubble. Some of the events are a little far-fetched and not necessarily smart ideas for students to follow. And everything seems to get tied up in a nice little bow at the end. With that being said, I do think the book will be good for some of my struggling readers and I will definitely add it to my classroom library.

This first installment in the Disaster Strikes series is a fast-paced, action-packed adventure that is sure to appeal to young readers. While Joey and his friends are at a local California skate park, they are suddenly faced with the devastation of an earthquake. With only each other to rely upon, these kids are faced with some very dangerous, life-saving decisions and must act quickly. Although some of their ideas do not necessarily seem to be the best approach for young people, it all works out for the best in the end. The story provides a great opportunity for further discussion and learning about emergency situations, as well as the importance of team work. A great start to a new series and we look forward to reading more! FOUR stars.

Joey Flores and his friends are having a blast at the skate park. He has a new skateboard and is trying some new stunts. The only bad thing is his mom and baby sister that have to follow along, treating him like a little kid. Luckily his mom consents to the slightly older neighbor boy walking home with him and finally he has some independence! But this might be the last time because an earthquake hits on their way home. Their lives are in danger but Joey keeps a level-head and they all make it home safely, proving that he can be trusted and treated like big boy.
A fun new series that has that realistic survival element that kids love. Perfect for 1st-3rd grades - and older. Younger fans of the I survived books should enjoy these.

This first book in a new series about surviving natural disasters features four kids making their way home from the local skating park. The four kids get separated when the earthquake causes the overpass they are near to collapse. Joey and Fiona try to find Kevin and Dylan before seeking out what is left of their homes.
I found the story simple enough for child readers but detailed enough to feel believable. Readers who enjoy survival stories involving natural disasters are bound to enjoy this series. It's an easy series to read and well done for the chosen audience.

It was just another sunny day in California when Joey Flores and his friends were walking home from the skateboard park. Then the earthquake hit. Suddenly the friends are caught in tumbled heaps of concrete, collapsed bridges, and crumpled cars. They have to figure out how to save each other and find a way home....but would their homes even be standing?

Have you ever had a day when it started out perfect then later the day it starts to get worse well thats what happens in this book. The genre to the book is realistact fiction. I think this book is great.
The setting in the story is in a city in a park, streets,and a few homes. Joey wanted to skate by himself while his parents werent being over protective. But he didn"t expect that
