Sex Criminals #1: Suzie Down in the Quiet

Rate this book
A SEX COMEDY FOR COMICS Suzie's a normal girl with an extraordinary ability: when she has sex, she stops time. One night she meets John... who has the same gift. And so they do what any other sex-having, time-stopping, couple would do: they rob banks. In the vein of THE 40-YEAR OLD VIRGIN and BRIDESMAIDS, Image Comics invites you to come along with MATT FRACTION (Hawkeye, SATELLITE SAM) and CHIP ZDARSKY (Prison Funnies, Monster Cops) for the series that puts the "comic" back in comics and the "sexy" back in sex crimes.

Matt Fraction

"How he got started in comics: In 1983, when Fraction was 7 years old and growing up in Kansas City, Mo., he became fascinated by the U.S. invasion of Grenada and created his own newspaper to explain the event. "I've always been story-driven, telling stories with pictures and words," he said.

Education and first job: Fraction never graduated from college. He stopped half a semester short of an art degree at Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri in 1998 to take a job as a Web designer and managing editor of a magazine about Internet culture.

"My mother was not happy about that," he said.

But that gig led Fraction and his co-workers to split off and launch MK12, a boutique graphic design and production firm in Kansas City that created the opening credits for the James Bond film "Quantum of Solace."

Big break: While writing and directing live-action shoots at MK12, Fraction spent his spare time writing comics and pitching his books each year to publishers at Comic-Con. Two books sold: "The Last of the Independents," published in 2003 by AiT/Planet Lar, and "Casanova," published in 2006 by Image Comics.

Fraction traveled extensively on commercial shoots. Then his wife got pregnant. So Fraction did what any rational man in his position would do -- he quit his job at MK12 to pursue his dream of becoming a full-time comic book writer.

Say what? "It was terrifying," said Fraction, who now lives in Portland, Ore. "I was married. We had a house. We had a baby coming. And I just quit my job."

Marvel hired Fraction in June 2006, thanks largely to the success of his other two comics. "I got very lucky," he half-joked. "If it hadn't worked out, I would have had to move back in with my parents.

I don't normally read comics or graphic novels, but this was on my roommates shelf and he recommended this and some other comics, and I'm definitely glad I started with this.

I'm still waiting for the next volume, but I absolutely loved this. And my immature dirty mind was definitely seduced by the title alone.

Suzie and Jon enter a temporarily frozen world when they orgasm – and when they discover each other’s shared powers at a party, they hatch a plan to use their power against the villains of the 21st century: the banks! Fraction’s on fire with this comic and Zdarsky’s art is incredible. Sex Criminals is one of the best new titles of the year. Read the full review here!

"SUZIE DOWN IN THE QUIET"

Great opener. Nothing to kick off an NSFW comic like a sex scene in a bathroom. Then it goes downhill from there, when the comic goes into flashback/backstory mode by showing how it all started. First off, no surprises there-- a female character, written by two males, chances are it isn't going to stick. This one was flat. From the death of the Father, the drifting apart with the mother, her "first time", all of it, it reads with a little hint of trying to hard, I mean what the hell was that Thomas Pynchon joke about, really? Her search for answers ends when she meets Jon, an actor who's a secretary, at a party for saving books and they fall in love over--wait for it-- *Lolita, "Lolita. Light of my life. Fire of loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta..." Predictable? This is the only part they don't really try too hard.
Anyway, END BACKSTORY. And we're in a bathroom of a building Jon and Suzie are about to rob...

Imagine of the first time you found pleasure with yourself you found a special power. A power to stop time. Awesome right ? Well she practices through her teen years and moves into adulthood with the job and such. The job sets her up to meet somebody who has the same ability. How could they not fall for each other ? They also decide to use the gift for a little criminal activity. So who are you going to call to stop this ? The Sex Police ! Yes, they exist and they are going to stop this lusty pair from their abuse of the powers.
It’s funny, weirdly sweet and has nice complimentary artwork. It all works for this older teen to adult read.

Found this single comic today at the comic book store. Love when I find these little hidden gems. Absolutely adore how this story is starting, finding out you can stop time while orgasming must be a trip! Even more when you find a partner who can do the same… can’t wait to read the second one. Well I might even just go ahead and get the Volumes instead 😍 Hot little tale within a partner in crime theme, I’m all in!

Loved this. Great story, both provocative and funny, and very real about the difficulties many of us faced in finding out about sex and our bodies, and real about adult sex (that it can be hot, and awkward, and funny, and emotional, and casual -- all at the same time). Except for the supernatural element, relatable A.F.

This is a book meant for mature readers.
The idea of this graphic novel was innovative and was what drew me to this volume when it was recommended by a friend. The bare story, concept and the art was good but the story did not develop enough for me.
I expect things to change in the follow-up volume which I intend to read before I make a final decision on this series.

My rating here is based on this short 32 page book. I expect something better in the next volume.

wait .... what??? look I'm not going to lie, if you gotta be a super hero... your power of super orgasm moonlight just might come in handy, at least against Batman. please, please tell me that's where this is going. Batman helpless to the super orgasm moonlit glow. Rated R your kids won't go blind if they see this, but you will have some questions to answers and hopes to dash if they get a hold of this. I mean it's called "Sex Criminals" use your better judgment. and if that don't work use mine and avoid it like an STD. I might pick up the next one but then again I might die in my sleep. it was NOT bad by any means, but just as it was getting good .... it ended, and ain't nobody got time for dat.

Very interesting story.

A++ for the sex positive female character, and for the teenagers figuring out their sexuality, how the story shows how hard it is because of the lack of resources and help.

Read the two issues back to back and together I give them 4 stars. Can't wait to see what's next. (Also I have a new otp ha).

(Read on Nov 9th, 2013)

*Re-read August 2014. Bumped to 4 stars. Love the art + writing.

4 Orgasmic-Stars! ☆☆☆☆
I really liked it. It had drama, humor and D!CK! :) lol, yep. You see lots of f#%king in this comic.

Suzie and Jon are perfect for one another. Jon seems like a guy's guy. Funny and laid back and he owns a very nice c#%k. ;)
& Suzie is sweet and mature...to a degree. She has to deal with her dad being murdered, school, homework, friends and an alcoholic mother to top it off.

I liked that the moment Suzie met Jon, she seemed smitten. (That whole love at 1st sight stuff) :) i always love a little romance in my stories.

The story caught my attention. The art...leaves a little to be desired. F#%k that. The art sucks. It's the only reason i took a whole star off.

I was expecting a humorous Bonnie and Clyde and that's not really what I got, at least not in this first issue. Still, I found this introduction to the series to be very entertaining. First, let me start by saying that yes, as the title and cover suggest this book has mature content. Nothing that I would consider pornographic or gratuitous but not for those who are easily offended.

This was humorous but it was also more than that. The character development of Suzie was surprisingly deep and endearing and I loved the breaking of the 4th wall with Suzie guiding the reader through both her past and present. There were some heartbreaking poignant moments and I found that at the end of the issue I really liked and cared about Suzie.

I'd recommend this trade paperback to first time comic readers who are apprehensive about reading comics in the first place. Most people think of comics as all superheroes and nerdiness. This comic has nothing to do with superheroes or anything of the sort. I'm a huge comic fan and NONE of them have anything to do with superheroes. That being said , I'd also recommend this for avid comic fans who are apprehensive about reading comics that are NOT superhero related. The storyline and idea of this scenario (without giving anything away) being possible is ridiculously hysterical. Very smart writing and beautiful artwork.

This comic was fantastic! The concept raises an eyebrow at first, but once you start reading it you can't help but enjoy it...just like how everyone raises their eyebrows at the subject of sex, but we all do it and enjoy it, right? Sex, action, humor all combined with great art. What more could you want in a graphic novel? I'm hooked on this comic and can't wait to start the others.

Omg. This was so good!! I can't believe how awesome this story was! I'm definitely going to have to get the first volume when the collection comes out.

This is such a unique idea that it comes across as something ridiculous when you first read the synopsis, but I was interested in the library aspect of the story and I'm super glad I took a chance on it!

Read this for a MOOC im doing. it was very unlike any comic I have read or would read, but it was great for it's genre and I am so here for women who own their sexuality. i actually am intrigued in the plot so I think might keep reading the series.

I didn't expect this to be so literal? I don't know what I was expecting. I came for the lulz and the porn and got a sad story about a dead dad and body discovery? At least it got to the point in the end. More criminal sprees, less tragic back story.

Decided to read this series because of it's nomination for the HUGO awards.
The premisse was kinda weird for me at first, but so far, it has been kinda awesome! And the artwork is pretty good as well!
Totally recommended for mature readers :)
