This entry in the series was the first time I can remember that I really noticed the change from one writer to the next. It hasn't always been smooth, but this time the story had a very different vibe.. it very much felt like a Star Trek episode.
The characters were very much out of character (mostly Perry and Krest, who where the focus), and Pucky did even more impossible things than usual to make sure the day was saved.
It seems the long term bit of the story is to find out the shadowy puller of strings, so I suspect, like the quest for Pel, there will be a few adventures like this one while the crew slowly get closer to the answer.
In the back up.. the idea of 'Cosmos' has now become clear, each writer is creating their own Burroughs-ian society somewhere in the solar system (this one on Callisto) and they're all going to meet up and do... something important, based on the Alpha Centurians from the first one. This entry was pretty fun. with a matriarchial society hoping to breed out males entiretly, but still needing them for the dirty work.
Rhodan lands on a Planet that was forbidden to land on by the Arkonides. And for good reason, as it turns out. Thora suggested the planet but can later not recall to have had any reason.
The crews gets nice little bear-like animals from the natives called Honos. The original Tribbles. Everyone loves them. In fact they get infected by Hyper-Eupheria.
Nice idea, nicely handled by Brand. Even Thora is now thinking only of having fun. And she calls Bell “Chubby dear”. The entire crew is about to die.
Only 5 men who where on board of a Gazelle escape the plague. Among them Perry who, and this is really refreshing, gets depressed. He feels there is nothing he could do to save his friends. And he feels guilty because of his silly decision to land on the planet in the first place.
Luckily Pucky is immune. And at last they manage to start the Titan again and to send of the SOS.
Some mysterious power is responsible. Probably the same guys who pulled the stings on Zarlt. We will see what happens next.
Beh, sarò sincero e lo ammetto: trattasi di storia piuttosto scadente, un libretto per collezionisti, senza pretese, equivalente ad Harmony. Ma alcune trovate qua e là strappano un sorriso.
