These poems weave together a kind of history of Black British Columbia, with three main time periods: the mid-19th century gold rush, when BC wanted to attract labor; the 1950s; and the 80s and 90s of the author’s youth and young adulthood. Music runs through all of them, with strong rhythms, scenes in clubs listening to bands and DJs, the search for a Black voice. Lots of short lines, and he likes to break words across them, sometimes with effective wordplay and sometimes I couldn’t see why he was doing it. I enjoyed these poems though I did find the collection as a whole seemed a bit one-note.
