I simply cannot get enough of this guy. The depth of his personality, the past that is revealed about him. I'm in love with his best friend. I just have to be sure that I don't read through the series too quickly and run off to Wyoming to see if he's for real. It's okay to read the series while watching the TV show. They are not the same, but you can still follow without getting confused. Characters from the books have been switched around to accommodate the 43 minute TV format, but the content is the same. Enjoy this delicious bit of Americana.
I sat down with my mom to watch a Longmire episode one evening. She was a fan of the series' leading actor. I watched and thought it was pretty good. I didn't watch it again until after Mommy passed away. By then it was a Netflix original and was soon dropped. I recently read one of Craig Johnson's newest releases and loved it! I've watched the series numerous times but thought maybe I should try more of his books. I was definitely surprised as I began reading that except for some of the characters, the book series is nothing like the TV series...at least not yet! Which is fine for me! I am enjoying an author rather new to me who writes about not only the history of Wyoming but also treats the Native American history, traditions, rituals, and culture with great respect. Along with learning more about Wyoming, I am also reading a great story within this book that makes it very difficult to put down! You will find in the series of Longmire books, the same characters from the TV series but with more insight into their backgrounds: Standing Bear (my favorite), Sheriff Walt Longmire, Cady, Vic (I don't like her in the TV series and I don't like her in the books but she serves a purpose), Lucian, and Ruby. The other characters are in the books, but they are very different. The events in the books are very different from the series so far. But, read for yourself. If you've seen the series, you'll understand. If you haven't seen the series, read the books first and then watch it. They are both good...but different...
If you haven't watched A&E's Longmire, you should. You do not need to be a fan of the show, however, to enjoy these books. The dry humour, laconic dialogue, and perfectly described Wyoming setting evoke comparisons to Larry McMurtry's work.
I bought this box set and then bought every other Longmire book. I've already hooked my husband and mother on the series. A must read for any devotee of Westerns.
I got hooked on the Longmire series on Netflix and loved the characters especially Walt Longmire. The Netflix series mainly uses Book 1 of the 4 volume set so there is so much more to learn about Walt and his female deputy Victoria "Vic" from Philadelphia. The setting is in Wyoming and after reading the books and watching all currrent seasons (hoping for more) on Netflix makes me want to travel there. The author, Craig Johnson, knows his subject matter especially the Native Americans who play a major role in the books, especially Henry. I am not sure if I would have viewed the book series differently after having already watched the Netflix series. By watching the series it mentally painted a picture of the book characters which really made reading that much more enjoyable. The producers who selected the actors to play the parts did an outstanding job as they mirror the book's characters. A 4 volume set I could not put down. An overall 5 stars. Recommended reading.
The common tale of the drunken investigator adds interest with layers of history - a Vietnam vet who likes quoting Shakespeare and drinking bad beer.
Unlike many cowboy investigator stories, Walt is best friends with someone who shares similarities but is a leader in his own right. The cowboy-Indian dynamic is heightened by a friendship cemented by a fight in a schoolyard, and the shared history of Vietnam. Henry Standing Bear might help with investigations, but he is nobody’s tame sidekick.
Victoria ‘the Terror’ Moretti is an able deputy and detective, but also a love interest. The third novel, her native Philadelphia, shows her in her element.
Even the side characters like Dog and Brandon White Buffalo get absorbed into the slipstream of community ties and investigation. Ruby is just a straight-talking gem.
I’m thinking about adding this to my collection. It’s as good as the Dresden Files, and I don’t say that often.
Craig's writing is just plain amazing. The characters are real. They have real feelings and thoughts, and you are part of the day to day lives of their tales. In this story, he takes on the horrible situation of human trafficking, and develops a real living story about the main character`s heroism in Vietnam and relates it to a horrible tragic loss of a young girl. As usual, he also brings out the tribulations faced by Native Americans in the United States. You will laugh out loud, cry a little bit, and smile a lot reading this amazing book.
Absolutely love the narrator. I want to listen to other books he narrates. Love his pacing, his gravelly low voice, and how he takes inflection and paused meaning to make the text come alive in a way I never would if I was just reading the text.
As for the book itself, not bad. Very interesting development of certain characters which makes me intrigued for the next few books.
Think I have read most of Craig Johnson's books. Completely out of order. Virgil White Buffalo has been Walt's spirit guide more than once. I enjoyed meeting the man and his life. Only book so far with a story of Vietnam. I was too young to go but knew several that did. My thanks to their service.
For a western-based, police murder mystery series filled with page-turning action, heart-stopping tension and endless suspense, The Longmire mysteries also deliver lyrical writing that just makes you stop, sigh, and say: "Sure wish I could write like this." Craig Johnson delivers and delivers. This series is a treasure.
I really enjoyed this box set. Craig Johnson is a very good story teller. His characters come alive on the pages. If you enjoy a well told story you will enjoy this boxed set!
I'm about one quarter way in and am getting a little frustrated with his meandering. Did anyone besides me find the bee collector lady in the restaurant the most boring thing they have ever read? Seems I'm a one off ......
I read Book 2 The Cold Dish. It had a lot of details and humor. I enjoy Longmire, the TV show, but this book was a little wordy for me. I just wanted to get to the meat of the story and find out who done it.
If you like the television series Longmire, you'll love these books (the book is ALWAYS better, right?). My husband and I are reading the series via Audible. Wonderful narrator.
I liked the plot and hearing what Walt is thinking (as opposed to the silent stares in the series), but a lot of ballistic descriptions weighs it down. Only read first one so far.
I love the Logmire series. The character development is amazing. The humor is the best, had me laughing out loud several times. I will be reading all of them. I would highly recommend to anyone who needs a summer mystery.
I love listening to George Guidall. He brought an essence to The Longmire series that I didn't have with the narrator in my brain. I enjoy these books twice as much with him as the narrator.
Wait is just an all around good guy. But! He is much more. Funny, sarcastic, warm, caring, witty, well read, just, loyal, loving, questioning, unsure, trusting, grieving, believing, and in quest of answers. A great character in well written books that pull you in beside Walt to pursue the mystery. Henry,Vic, Lucien, Ruby, Cady, Santiago, Dog, all the other people that are so real. Absoroka County, Wyoming draws you there with its beauty and desolation. Keep writing Craig Johnson!
