Twister is the second book in Saddleback's Heights series that I tried. The Heights books are aimed at older readers (grades 4-8) with very low reading levels (mostly 2.0-2.5). Twister was much more readable than the first book I tried (Crash). Rafael Silva and his children Antonio and Lilia again venture to another town; this time to Plains, Kansas where Rafael is to oversee an irrigation project. While there, a tornado hits the town, destroying the house they are staying in and trapping Antonio in the well he took refuge in. Short sentences move the story along and lots of detailed tornado action during the height of the story serve as a worthwhile payoff for readers. A great hi-lo pick.
High interest Low vocab novel for new adult or English as a Second Language readers.
Very basic story, no jargon, or slang.
For what it was, it was fine. Awkward speech is the hallmark of this sort of type of book (Think "See Spot. See Spot run"). No competition for Orca Hi/Lo books, though.
Antonio's dad gets a job that temporarily takes the family to tornado alley in Plains, Kansas. Antonio stays home at the farmhouse to explore while his dad goes to a meeting. A tornado flares up and Antonio finds himself trapped in a well, trying to survive and wondering if anyone will find him there.
