Physicians of the Heart: A Sufi View of the Ninety-Nine Names of Allah

Rate this book
This book takes the reader into the heart of the mystery of the 99 sacred Names of Allah. It is a vehicle for understanding the infinite nature of God, and for discovering the divine potential in every soul. It is also a comprehensive guidebook for progressing through the stages of the spiritual path and an instruction manual for teachers on how to work with students more wisely, as physicians of the heart.

In the process of this voyage to discovery, the reader is systematically exposed to the universal mysticism encoded in the Qur’an and in the classical Sufi traditions, as well as to a modern psychological approach that works with the 99 Names to achieve individuation and wholeness.

This astounding book is a nothing less than a mystical road map into the reality of the Only Being, to the One from whence all the 99 beautiful names of Allah spring, and to which they all point. The collaboration of these scholars and practitioners has yielded a truly profound work of deep spiritual value and psychological insight which should continue to serve the entire community of the "Jerusalem Trilogy" (Jews, Christians, and Muslims) for generations to come. -Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, founder of the Jewish Renewal Movement

What’s in a name? This book has the answer. Shining light on the semantic, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of the Quranic Names of God, the authors show how the Names are much more than theological abstractions. They are words of power, sovereign remedies for the ailing human heart. -Pir Zia Inayat-Khan, PhD, president of the Sufi Order International and founder of the Suluk Academy and Seven Pillars House of Wisdom

The Source of Love promises humanity, “Call on me in longing and love through intoning My Most Beautiful Names and I will answer your call, far beyond your imagination.” O seeker, enter the mystical kingdom of the Divine Energies, called the Most Beautiful Names of Allah, by plunging into this remarkable sourcebook, which elucidates the ancient practice of contemplation and chanting of the Names of God, the swiftest path to union. The authors of the book have brought a great gift to the West in their extraordinary and monumental work which elucidates a new field of wisdom in the West. Use this book as a guide on your journey. -Fariha al Jerrahi, -Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Lineage

This is a very rich, deep guide to inner work including spiritual and psychological aspects woven together. It is based on the Sufi view of the 99 Names of Allah, which I would call Aspects of the Divine Human Nature. Anyone who has been doing their inner work for a while could reap rich rewards from reading this book.

As part of the explication of the "Names," it also reveals the amazing complex subtlety of the Arabic language, without overwhelming the reader with too many linguistic details. I should point out that it is written in lucid, compelling English.

It is an incredible resource to be savored bit by bit, meditated upon, and returned to many times. The Names can be used as a focus for meditation or zikr (chanting) and they are the Physicians of the Heart, bringing us healing and enlightening of our hearts and souls. Guidance on how to make use of the Names is included.

This is the most thorough book on the 99 names of Allah that I've read so far. It's very accessible for a western audience, and it gives a lot of linguistic background on the Arabic that helps to show deep meanings of each name as well as connections among the names. My only criticism is that it's written more for Sufi teachers/therapists than for students or those using the book on their own. I would have liked a little more detail on how to actually USE the names in recitation.

This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read; heart-opening, transcendent, deeply transformative. Written by a group of Sufi scholars, I am in awe of their dedication, devotion, love, and knowledge. I loved learning more about the Arabic language, was delighted by the book's website where you can hear the names pronounced by several speakers, and found that just reading the book was a deep meditation. Despite the depth of the content, the authors write in an engaging, accessible style. It really was a pleasure to read. Now that I've finished the book I have every intention of starting again at the beginning!

An unbelievably beautiful book - one of the best I have ever come across. Now if we could combine this with the enneagram work that would be something! A book to come back to again and again, and each time be gifted with something new. A real treasure of work on the 99 Treasures. So thankful to the teachers that wrote/experienced this.
Also, it's a hefty size so I bought it on kindle too, the calligraphy looks great!

Written by four Sufi authorities, it is well written and well researched. My friends and I have spent over 2 years reading and discussing it, which I am sure will continue into the future.

Not accurate to say I "finished" this book on such-and-such a day. This book is a lifetime endeavor. And such a life!
Beautiful. Just Beautiful.
