He is also Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford and Provost of Worcester College, Oxford. A Man Booker Prize judge in 2014.
He studied at the University of Cambridge and Harvard University. He has been King Alfred Professor of English Literature at Liverpool University, Professor of Shakespeare and Renaissance Literature at the University of Warwick. مقدمة ممتعة مفيدة شيقة مميزة عن الأدب الانجليزي
ان تقرأ نماذج من الأدب الانجليزي شئ
وأن تقرأ عن الأدب الانجليزي ونشأته وتاريخه شئ أخر
ويمكن من اجمل الامثلة التي قرأتها في الكتاب عن هذا الأمر :
إذا كنت من محبِّي ركوب الدراجات فإن
المتعة التي تحصل عليها من ركوب الدراجة بسرعة مائة ميل في الساعة على الطريق
السريع لن تقل — بل على العكس قد تزداد — إذا تعلمت ً أيضاً كيف تفك أجزاء الدراجة
وفهمت َ طريقة صنعها وحاولت َ إصلاح أجزائها وأعدت تركيبها مرة أخرى، فعلى الأقل
سوف تعطيك خبرتُك الميكانيكية مادة صالحة للمناقشة مع زملائك من محبي ركوب
الدراجات، وكونك جزءًا من »مجتمع« محبي ركوب الدراجات ذوي المعرفة والعادات
والتقاليد المشتركة سوف يعطيك متعة إضافية«.
ويمكننا قول أمر مشابه عن دراسة الأدب الإنجليزي؛ حيث يمكنها أن تضيف
مستويات عديدة إلى متعة القراءة وخاصة معاودة القراءة.
وهذا ما وجدته اثناء قراءة هذا الكتاب
فعندما يتحدث عن شئ قرأته من الأدب الانجليزي ويحلل ويضيف معلومات تزداد متعتي به لدرجة اني اريد اعادة قراءته
كما انه اثار فضولي تجاه الكثير من الاعمال الأخرى
والتي قد اعود لقراءة هذا المقدمة مرة اخرى بعد قراءة بعض هذه المؤلفات :)

الأدب الإنجليزي (مقدمة قصيرة جدًا) ..... جوناثان بيت
مقدمة مميزة عن أدب عظيم كان له فضل كبير في تاريخ الفنون الانسانية , أدب انتمى إليه أعظم الأدباء و أجملهم على الاطلاق.
المقدمة على قدر محترم من البساطة مع توضيح للتعقيدات المختلفة , وذكر أمثلة دالة على المعنى المُراد .
معلومات مفيدة ومكثفة تصلح لأن تكون مدخل لدراسة هذا الأدب العظيم .
مجرد إنك تشوف أسماء زي شكسبير , ديكنز ,فرجينيا وولف , عوليس , كلها أسماء تدفع للبهجة .
في المجمل كتاب جيد ومفيد .

كتاب ((الأدب الإنجليزي مقدمة قصيرة جداً)) لجوناثان بيت من أجمل الكتب اللي بتتكلم عن تطور الأدب الإنجليزي لغير المتخصصين، يعني بتوقف عن الشرح بالضبط قبل ما تشعر بالملل كقارئ عادي ما بتهمك التفاصيل وبتبحث عن خطوط عريضة...
حجم الكتاب 120صفحة بس في مقتطفات لكل أنواع الآداب الإنجليزية ونشأتها وتطورها بكل مرحلة مع نبذة عن أشهر أدباء كل مرحلة وكل نوع أدبي، يعني رحلة ماتعة وسريعة ومختصرة ومفيدة بنفس الوقت، والحلو إنك بتقرأ أسماء روائع عالمية أثبتت وجودها واستمر أثرها مئات السنين، الكاتب بحاول يبحث ولو بعجالة عن الأسباب اللي أكسبت هاي الكتب رونقها وكيف استطاعت تحافظ عليه...
ما في كتاب لا يستفاد منه حتى لو مجرد ذكر إسم شعب معين كان موجود واختفى أو طبقة اجتماعية كانت موجودة واندثرت، كله بعطي انطباع عن البيئة والوضع التاريخي والظروف اللي ساهمت بنشأة نوع معين من الكتابات، مين أول شخص أسسه، مين تأثر بهالمدرسة ومين ورثها من الأجيال التالية، كل أسماء الكتب المذكورة بالكتاب وكل أسماء المؤلفين كانوا من أبرز الأدباء بعصرهم يعني لازم تقرأهم إذا بعدك ما قرأتهم مش قارئ إلهم، يعني فرصة تلتقي فيهم وتسمع بعض العبارات اللي تخلدت ورسخت بذاكرة التاريخ من مسرحيات أو شعر أو روايات...

I got a Kindle Fire for Christmas and this is the first book I read start-to-finish on it. I should add that this reading took place on a plane. So the conditions were rather ideal for straight-through reading.
That said, this really was a fun, easy, somewhat-informative read. I'm a great fan of Bate's writing on Shakespeare and I wanted to see him in a more casual mode. And indeed this book is casual. It has the feel of someone thinking out loud.
Bate knows a lot and this book would be useful for anyone who wants a Very Short Introduction to the subject. Some authors use VSIs as a way to speculate without going into detail, to theorize without really making arguments. Bate doesn't do that. This is very much "received wisdom about English Literature."
In fact, Bate writes (almost) as if the last few decades of cultural politics didn't happen. Though he says "English Literature has been built upon the contest between conqueror and dispossessed, centre and margin, authority and rebellion," he's more interested in readerly pleasures, in the particularly English attachment to childhood, nature, adventure, escape, feeling. "From its very beginning [...] English poetry has resonated with the language of praise and of wonder," and the same could be said of Bate's writing about English Literature. He mostly writes about the best stuff: Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Keats, Austen, Dickens, George Eliot, Woolf, Derek Walcott, Seamus Heaney. The last two are hardly English Literature, and he admits that. His attitude to what constitutes "English" literature is: If I like it, and the writer has some vague connection to England, even if it's antagonistic, then it's English Literature. His final claim is that England is as much a melting pot as America. I'm not so sure.
The best part of the book is the first chapter, on children's literature. I'm not much for kiddie-lit but Bate grabs you by showing that you already know a lot about English Literature if you know Winnie the Pooh, The Wind in the Willows, Narnia, Tolkien, etc. He makes connections between children's books that I didn't know existed and shows how they revise and reply to one another just as much as the Romantics revise and reply to Milton. After that, there isn't much new or striking, but as I said, it's still a good read.

Bate tends to throw the reader into things headfirst, and he will often let his sentences run away with him.
I'm going to review this by commenting on each chapter.

1. Once upon a time— Jumps into various children’s stories without grounding the reader in anything. Several small tangents. Lots of quotations.
2. What it is—Much more ordered consideration of English Literature here. Form, style, lit crit. The boundaries of the genre. Creativity, cannon, context.
3. When it began— Annoying history lessons abound here. Lots of name-dropping. Ireland, Scotland, Wales. Celts, Romans, Gaelic, Anglo-Saxon. (Why do I care again?) Influence of Bible translations.
4. The study of English—Classic education in rhetoric and Latin. Johnson. Shakespeare. “It might be truer to say that Elizabethan literature created a character for the nation than that a national character created Elizabethan literature.” More Shakespeare. Changes to texts in later editions.
5. Periods and movements—Renaissance, Reformation, Enlightenment, Romanticism, Modernism.
6. Among the English poets—Boring poetry, except a few good lines from Donne.
7. Shakespeare and dramatic literature—Shakespeare should be read aloud, instead of read.
8. Aspects of the English novel—Edwardian era: romance novels and gothic novels. Jane Austen and Dickens. “When the condition of England is such that there is ‘no coherent social faith and order’, the novelist must step in and create an order, a manageable world. The novel can provide a ‘certain spiritual grandeur’ that is unthreatened by the proposition that we might be descended from apes rather than fashioned by the hand of God.” Also, “That is what the very greatest literature can do: a force that is somehow ‘not herself’ takes ‘possession’ of the writer and enables her to create a second world that has the power to take ‘possession’ of the reader in turn, and to transport us out of our own world in such a way that when we return home, we sense that we have become more human, more emotionally intelligent.” Virginia Woolf. Stream of consciousness. Unreliable narrators.

سلسلة أكسفورد الرائعة المعنون بمقدمة قصيرة جداً كمناجم الذهب التي تغني صاحبها بخلفية ثقافية عن كل ما يخطر في بال القارئ صدر لها حتى الأن اكثر من 300 رائعة وترجم منها للعربية 64 كتابا بواسطة مؤسسة هنداوي التي تمثل بحق راية للتعليم والثقافة وطاقم عمل مترجميها على مستوى عالي من الخبرة والذوق الفني الأدبي
وكانت البداية مع السلسلة في الأدب الإنجليزي ولن تكون الاخيرة ان شاء الله
الكتاب وبكل صدق في اقل من 170 صفحة يعرفك على اساسيات نشأة وتطور هذا الاب وتأثرها بكل عوامل عصرها من تبدلات سياسية واجتماعية ويتخلل الشرح دراسة لفنون الرواية والمسرح والشعر في الحقبة المعنية في الفصل
لكن 3 نجوم جاءت لإستفاضة جوناتان بيت في التوغل في الامثلة الادبية وتحليلها اكثر من الشرح السردي للظروف المحيطة اذا انتقل مثلا للتحليل النقدي للملحمة الانجليزية الفردوس المفقود لميلتون بشكل كبير اخرجني من اجواء الحدث
وخاصة لقارئة مثلي ليس لها باع طويل مع الثقافة الإنجليزية فكانت مناقشة المؤلف وكأنها موجهة لاشخاص قد طالعوا الاعمال التي يتحدث عنها فأحسست بالملل في صفحات عدة لكن انا من النوع الذي يستمتع باي نص مكتوب يتناول الابحار في الادب ولهذا اعجبني الكتاب وقد لا يعجب اصدقاء اخريين

This book tried to do too much. While interesting and insightful, it sought to cover too much turf in 166 pages. Some chapters were enjoyable, but overall I was disappointed and wouldn’t recommend.

مقدمة رائعة وثرية عن الأدب الإنجليزي: ماهيته، بداية ظهوره والسمات المميزة للعصور الأدبية.
أقدر أقول إنها سلسة وسهلة سواء للمتخصص في دارسة الأدب الإنجليزي أو مُحب بيحاول يتعرف على تاريخ الأدب الإنجليزي.
يعيبه فقط بعض الإسهاب في تفاصيل دقيقة جدا والانتقال بين التفاصيل بدون مقدمات، والحقيقة مش قادر أميز إن كان ذلك أثر جانبي للترجمة أم كانت طريقه المؤلف كما ظهرت في النسخة المترجمة.
عجبني جدا ترتيب الكتاب والرحلة اللي بياخدنا فيها الكتاب من قصص الأطفال اللي بتكون بداية تعرفنا بالأدب إلي معضلة تعريف ما هو أدب بشكل عام، واتصال الكُتاب الدائم بالماضي وتأثيره عليهم وتأثيرهم عليه في "حوار مع الموتى".
يتكلم عن التجربة الفردية لصناعة المنتج الأدبي في مقابل الاكتشافات العلمية فيقول:
إذا لم يكن اينشتاين توصل لمعادلة "طاقة = الكتلة X مربع سرعة الضوء كان شخص اخر سيتوصل، وإذا لم يكن هناك داروين كان الفضل سيعود ل الفريد والاس فى اكتشاف ان التطور يعمل عن طريق الانتقاء الطبيعي مع البيئة. ولكن إن لم يكتب مليتون "الفردوس المفقود" فلم يكن هناك شخص اخر ليكتبها، وإن لم يكن ثمة بيتهوفن كان تاريخ الموسيقي الغربية سيختلف.
من القواعد الاساسية فى العلم قابلية التحقق والتكرار، تكرار النتائج، ومن قواعد الفن عدم قابليته للتكرار، فرغم انه قد تحاول اخبارنا بشئ ليس من الضروري ان تكون قابلة للتحقق، ولا تعتمد على الدليل. يمكن إعادة انتاج الاعمال ولكن لا يمكن استنساخها، فالأدب يتأثر بالسياق الاجتماعي ولكن الخاصيه المميزة هى قدرته على مقاومة سياقة بل ومقاومة علم المؤلف ونواياه.

يتتبع المؤرخ "هيبوليت تين" واسهامه فى كتابه مجلدات تاريخ الأدب الانجليزي وما يعبر عنه الأدب فى ثقافة وحضارة مجتمعة:
العمل الأدبي ليس مجرد لعب بالخيال او نزوة منفصلة لعقل متحمس، ولكنه نسخة من العادات والتقاليد المعاصرة، وعلامة على حالة معينة للفكر. والاستنتاج المستمد من ذلك أنه من خلال الاثار الأدبية يمكننا تتبع شعور الناس وفكرهم منذ عدة قرون
ويأخدنا فى رحلة خاصة فى عالم الأدب الانجليزي المعقد بين الاعراق والطبقات والعقول المختلفة التي شكلته:
بني الأدب الانجليزي على النزاع بين المنتصر والمهزوم، المركز والاطراف، اللاتينية مقاب الانجليزية مقابل الفرنسية، البلاط مقابل الريف، لندن مقابل الاقاليم، الجنوب والشمال، الفصحي مقابل لهجة الاقاليم.

من القواعد الاساسية فى العلم قابلية التحقق والتكرار، تكرار النتائج، ومن قواعد الفن عدم قابليته للتكرار، فرغم انه قد تحاول اخبارنا بشئ ليس من الضروري ان تكون قابلة للتحقق، ولا تعتمد على الدليل. يمكن إعادة انتاج الاعمال ولكن لا يمكن استنساخها، فالأدب يتأثر بالسياق الاجتماعي ولكن الخاصيه المميزة هى قدرته على مقاومة سياقة بل ومقاومة علم المؤلف ونواياه.

I love the Oxford Very Short Introduction series simply because each volume does a fantastic job of introducing a deep subject in a concise yet detailed manner. The volume English Literature by Jonathan Bate surprised me in its approach on the subject, yet it was quite satisfying to read, not to mention it has encouraged me to become more familiar with the earlier English classics.
I had expected this Very Short Introduction to go through English literature in a chronological order as it discusses the eras in the literature of Great Britain. Instead, Bate approaches the subject more subjectively, first defining just what “English literature” could or should be, when and where we’ve encountered it, and how it’s a part of our culture. He then approached English literature through the common themes and writing genres of the written word (including essays, novels, poetry, and drama).
I read this more than a week ago and I really loved the reading experience. As often is the case when life is rather busy and I read a short book in a short timeframe, I’ve unfortunately forgotten a lot of the details that made this book such a satisfying read. When I first put it down I thought “I’ll have no problem writing a lengthy, thoughtful post on this book,” and now, of course, I cannot recall the many things I wanted to address about the book. It’s one I should revisit at different stages of my familiarity with English lit. I look forward to keeping on reading.
Now, if only Oxford University Press would produce a comparable volume on American Literature, then I’d be satisfied.

بلغ الكاتِب (د. جونثان بيت) من التمكّن والضلوع في مجال الأدب بحيث يصوغُ أفكارهُ باقتباساتٍ من أكثر الأعمالِ الخالدة في الأدب الإنجليزيّ.
بمعنى أبسط، لدى الكاتب صورة جماليّة يريدُ إيصالها للقاريء، وفي سبيل ذلك يأخُذ ابتسامة "المونوليزا" لدافنشي، وألوان فان جوخ البهيّة،
ونحت (مايكل أنجلو) الأقرب للواقع ليكّون بهم تلك الصورة الجميلة في عقلِ قارئهِ.
طبعاً إذا لم تعرف من هو مايكل أنجلو، أو لم تر ألوان فان جوخ من قبل فستصاب بالملل على خلاف القاريء المضطلع الذي ستضجّ نفسهُ بهجةً بتلك الصورة الجماليّة.
الغرض من الكتاب هو حصر جوانب مادّة علمية يتطلب التعمّق في أحد فروعها مكتباتٍ يُسار فيها لأميال.
لذا فإنّ القراءة السريعة غيرَ المتخصّصّة لا يُنصَحُ بها لهذا الكتاب. بل يفضّل بالقاريء أن يركّز اهتمامهُ على أحد الجوانبِ التي تهمّهُ ، والتي لهُ اضطلاعٌ سابقٌ بأعمالها كأدب الأطفال مثلاً بالفصل الأول (كان يا مكان)، وبذلك يأخذ القاريء عنها فكرة جيّدة تُكسِبهُ إمكانيّة التعمّق في البحث مُستقبلاً.
الكتاب في رأيي أفضل من بعض المقررات الدراسيّة لفروع الأدب الإنجليزيّ في الجامعاتِ العربيّة، بل ربما أغنى وأثرى وأمتع منها في طريقة السرد، وهو مناسبٌ جدّاً لتلك النوعيّة من الطلاب الدارسين للأدب الإنجليزيّ في الجامعات العربيّة.
خمسة نجوم لأنّ الكِتاب أفضل من مناهج دَرستُها شخصيّاً. :)

This survey of English literature is engaging, humourous, and thorough in a way that it's possible only Jonathan Bate could pull off. I wouldn't recommend it to someone with no background studying literature (or at least, I'm not sure that someone could get as much out of the book), but for anyone wanting a refresher course or to get a better sense of which holes in their knowledge (and reading list) to start filling, it's a great little book.

I’m not sure who this is for. I majored in English and didn’t really need an introduction, but I have decided to read every Very Short Introduction. I didn’t learn much that I didn’t already know. However, I suspect that somebody picking up this book without any knowledge of English Literature would be absolutely bewildered by the number of authors mentioned. Bate presumes a lot of knowledge on the reader’s part and doesn’t add much.

بداية الكتاب رائعة، كان باعتقادي أن الكتاب سيتناول الأدب الإنجليزي من البداية بشكل منظم ومتسلسل، لكن الحديث كان كثير التداخل بأسماء كتب وقصائد وروائيين ومسرحيين وشعراء وغيرها.
الكتاب مُمِل بعض الشيء، أجزاء متفرقة كانت مثيرة للاهتمام فعلاً، أحببت جداً الفصل الخاص بشكسبير والأدب المسرحي✨

كتاب ممتع جداً....أنا أعشق الأدب الإنجليزي وخاصة أدب القرن التاسع عشر-الفترة المفضلة بالنسبة لي في التاريخ الحديث-وقد تناولها الكاتب بشكل رائع كما يحتوي على تفسيرات مميزة لموضوعات شيقة عن الأدب.

كانت البداية الحقيقية لﻷدب الانجليزى من خلال نشأة أدب التفسير وشملت ترجمة الإنجيل للعامية عن طريق الكهنة لتبسيطه للجمهور وكان فن التفسير بيتم تدريسه فالكنايس .......سبقته كتابات لﻹيرلنديين أولا بعدها السلت ،الانجلوساكسون وأخيرا النورمان .....لكن لم يعتد بيها كنشأة لﻷدب الانجليزى

I love Oxford's Very Short Introduction series. Even though a lot of the books are dreary or badly written, and none of them are deeply inspiring, I find them the easiest way to get a broad and scholarly knowledge base as quickly as possible. But amid the large piles of dry information, one occasionally find an absolute gem. Jonathan Bate's book on English Literature is one of these gems.
Despite eschewing any particularly organised structure, Bate manages to give both a coherent account with many nuggets of decorative detail, to ask the question, what is English Literature? This begs the question, what is literature? which Bate sidesteps somewhat, but his main discussion is (rightly) about the 'English' part of that. He takes it to mean, 'associated with England', which rules out a great body of other literature written in the English language, and then goes on to propose and demolish a number of definitions. The unwritten conclusion is that part of what makes English literature so rich and interesting is its cosmopolitan nature, and its uncertainty about where its boundaries lie.
Intertwining his arguments with the social, political, religious, and cultural histories of England (with the particular awkward questions about Empire), Bate's introduction, or perhaps preface, is not one to missed by the avid reader.

Early in this volume, and without the round drip of ironic bitter, Bate finds from full compositions the familiar ingredient that the broadly flavourful, Paradise Lost, has in common with the sweet, Winnie The Pooh. By attending in a way particularly sympathetic to difference and variety, he manages a roam over the English palate with stops here and there for short tastes. He finds these commonalities again and again, each time in fresh places marked sensibly and indelibly by their own histories, and makes wider comparisons outside of literature and finally about Englishness itself.

كمقدمة مختصرة للأدب الانجليزي الكتاب جميل بسيط وممتع السرد.بدأ الكاتب بأدب الطفل ثم انتقل الي ماهية الادب الانجليزي والمسرحية الانجليزية والرواية والعوامل التي تأثر بها الأدب الانجليزي.بين الكاتب كذلك صعوبة تحديد ما هو الادب الانجليزي هل هو البريطاني ام يشمل كل ما كُتب بالانجليزية كالأدب الامريكي أم ان ذلك يعتمد علي جنسية الكاتب ام اين كتبها.
ما يثير للاهتمام ان الكاتب يري ان مبتدأ الادب الانجليزي هي الكنيسة وأكثر ما يميز الادب الانجليزي هو الطابع الساخر.
علي أني أظن أن الكتاب من الممكن أن يكون مُرَتَباً بشكل أفضل.

الكتاب بشكل عام يعتبر من ضمن أفضل الكتب التي تحدثت عن ماهية الأدب الإنجليزي وتاريخه بشكل سلس وواضح، وأيضاً الكتاب يتميز بتتابع الأفكار وعرضها بسياق مميز، فهذا الكتاب من حيث الأصل يعتبر كتاب يتحدث عن تاريخ الأدب الإنجليزي، ولكن المؤلف أثناء سرده لم يذكر تواريخ معينة ويعلق عليها فقط بل ذكر أبرز الأدباء وتحدث عنهم بشكل موجز وغير مخل وتحدث عن أبرز أعمالهم، وأيضا لا نبخس حق المترجمة التي قامت بعمل مميز، وفي الختام الكتاب ككل يعتبر ممتع ومشوق وغير ممل وكتاب له ثقل علمي.

While the last few pages of this book were far from interesting, I can without a doubt say this was a wonderful overview and a clearly articulated read. I don't have much to say except that, should the need arise, I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn about the history and purpose of English literature.

الشئ الذي أثار غضبي أثناء القراءة هو التنقل من موضوع لموضوع ثم العودة لنفس الموضوع أكثر من مرة
يبدأ بشكل جيد ثم يتفرع ويتفرع ولا ينتهي مما يريد قوله
الكتاب جيد وفيه كم كبير من المعلومات عن الادب الانجليزي ولكن طريقة عرضه بالنسبة لي لم تكن جيدة

This provided a good overview and was very readable - would recommend for anyone going to study English at university, or anyone who is interested in learning more about the subject.
